1. G7 leaders concluded their summit in Italy with a warning to China that they will continue to target actors that “materially support Russia’s war machine”. They called on the superpower to “step up efforts to promote international peace and security”. Leaders also expressed concern at China’s “non-market policies”. In a wide-ranging final statement the G7 warned Iran against advancing its nuclear programme and gave its full support to America’s peace plan for Palestine. Bloomberg reported that references to gay rights and abortion were removed, perhaps to placate Pope Francis, who attended the summit.

Ukraine rejected the demands; Lloyd Austin, America’s defence secretary, said that Mr Putin was in no “position to dictate to Ukraine” how to bring about peace.

The ruling passed by a 6-3 margin, along ideological lines, with all conservative judges voting in favour.
