The Brass King
The Brass King (BK) is a Brooklyn native, who expanded his music career in Miami and now lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. A connoisseur of world music raised on the sounds of Motown, Fania, Stax, Blue Note Records and a living witness to the emergence of Hip Hop in New York (1980's), he developed DJ skills as a member of Miami’s original Plan Beats crew starting in the late 80’s. Even today, his crew is known for its uncompromising street style, shutting down streets in Miami’s Wynwood Art District with old skool block parties during the early days of Art Walk. Recognized for his flawless production and mixtapes since the 90’s, BK’s unique style has taken him as far as Spain, Germany and Amsterdam. He enjoys challenging listeners beyond their comfort zones by mixing classics and rare selections including Latin, African, Hip Hop, R & B, Funk and Soul Grooves. His meticulous attention to musical origin, passion for digging in the crates and discerning ear for authenticity make him a crowd favorite from lounges to house parties to main stage theaters. His talent has earned his place as a musical selector for Miami's; Funk Jazz Lounge, Jazz in the Gardens, Adrienne Arsht Center 'Piano Slam' and 17's Increase The Peace In 2012, BK left his position in Florida with The Department of Corrections as a Duty Warden to focus on his career as a DJ, producer, educator and vinyl librarian. Between DJ gigs, he is the lead DJ instructor for PATH: Preserving, Archiving & Teaching Hiphop, Inc., a Hip Hop education organization in South Florida and operations manager at 17 Gallery & Studios, a community artspace in Cutler Bay, FL. As the inaugural artist in residence for the organization, AIR (Artists In Residence), he is initiating a new model for artist community development in South Florida. He is synthesizing his creativity and activism to launch The Child Support Tour, an initiative that challenges fathers to actively participate in the life of their families and communities, while creating a Fatherhood Community Network.
