Debut Buddies
Nate Ragolia, Chelsea Hollander, Kelly Attaway
This is a fortnightly podcast about firsts, exploring the initial offerings in an artist’s catalogue, the first forays in a medium, the first season, first book, first video game… Well, you get the idea. Firsts! Hosted by Kelly Attaway, Chelsea Hollander, and Nate Ragolia. ***Ep 1 - 200, this was the comedy/trivia podcast, A Vague Idea.
First Video Game - Spacewar! (1962)
Nate, Kelly, and Chelsea delve into the first breakthrough video game that became available on multiple platforms (like a tiny-screened refrigerator computer) and even spawned the first arcade game! The game: Spacewar! The year: 1962. The fun: Not entirely existent! We discuss this piece of history, some code lore, some sci-fi legacy, and more! Plus, I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE!

First Diamond Album - Can't Slow Down by Lionel Richie (1983)
This episode, Kelly, Chelsea, and Nate lend their ears to Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down, an album that came out in 1983 and went Diamond (10x Platinum) in 1985 (assuming the Wiki chart is accurate)... which means it was the FIRST DIAMOND ALBUM. (If we were wrong, tweet at us!) We dig into the titular track, the awesome All Night Long, the soggy middle, the wondrous Running with the Night, and of course, Hello. And we play I See What You Did There!

First Holiday Special - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
Ho Ho Oh No! We're taking a critical look at the classic, 1964, Rankin / Bass film, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which is widely acknowledged to be the First Holiday Special (becoming a recurring staple of Christmastime television), and the First Stopmotion / Claymation Holiday Special. Rudolph, Hermey, Santa, Donnor, Yukon Cornelius, misfit toys... BURL IVES! This flick is a trip!

First Pumpkin Pie (c. 16th / 17th Century)
"These Buddies were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should..." This episode, Kelly, Chelsea, and Nate make versions of the First Pumpkin Pie, to... varying levels of success. Kelly makes a pie from the 1500s. Nate and Chelsea make one from the 1600s, that's really just a gourd full of custard. It's... food, mostly! Plus, we play I See What You Did There and give you updates with the Mouthguard/MouthGarfield Report! And there's a haunting at Chelsea's!

(Did you know that he did two different comics BEFORE Garfield? It's true!) Listen to find out how we stretch 3 panels to an hour and twenty minutes! And, for THE MOUTHGUARD REPORT and I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE...

First Creepypasta - Ted the Caver (2001)
Hold onto your bits, and bring some extra batteries for your DeWalt drill! This week, Chelsea, Nate and Kelly spelunk through the very FIRST CREEPYPASTA online spooky story... TED THE CAVER. We discuss the Angelfire website (which still stands!), the brilliant pacing, a couple of questionable structure choices, and the existential dread of caving in total darkness. Join us for a crash course on little baby internet horror storytelling! (Plus, I See What You Did There!)

First Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz (1981)
Let's get a little spooky by surveying the original Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book from 1981. Nate, Kelly, and Chelsea discuss the hits and misses in this kid's tome of terror. After all, this book might've been your first exposure to The Hook (about a hook-handed murderer) or High Beams (there's someone in the backseat!!!) or even The Wendigo! How many Debs does this book get? Listen to find out... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! (Did we scare you?)

First Reality Show - An American Family (1973)
The Buddies are back to talk about the Louds, an upper middle class family from California who let a film crew record their lives and make it into a 12 episode series in 1973. Originally aired on PBS, An American Family is considered the First Reality Show ever. Chelsea, Kelly and Nate dive into the only version of it they could find, the 2011 clip compilation An American Family: Anniversary Edition. We've got Bill, we've got Pat, we've got Lance, we've got Delilah, Grant, Kevin and Michele. But most importantly, we've got our buddies.

First Podcast - IT Conversations with Doug Kaye (Marc Smith: Catalyzing Collective Action on the Net, 2004)
Welcome to DEBUT BUDDIES! This is a podcast about Firsts, hosted by Chelsea, Kelly, and Nate! This episode, the Debs get down with the FIRST PODCAST, Doug Kaye's IT Conversations, launched in 2003! We couldn't find the first one, so we grabbed the earliest we could find. From February 2004, this is the Marc Smith: Catalyzing Collective Action on the Net episode. We discuss the early-00s predictions about social media, internet behavior, and even Augmented Reality tech. This is a wild ride. Plus, we play a game, give our Mouthguard Report, and rate the experience. Was early podcasting good? Is this podcast any better? Have a First for us to discuss? Tweet at us @debutbuddies!
