ASoundPurchase
ASoundPurchase is run by two musicians and longtime friends. This podcast was created from the idea of introducing albums to Stefan's high school music students, many of whom didn't realise that the Red Hot Chili Peppers were a real band...  Hosts Jake and Stefan guide you through some of the most iconic recordings ever made, track by track, deciding if the recordings studied are indeed a sound purchase. Along the way they share anecdotes from their own musical lives and have a good yarn.  Jake -a multi-instrumentalist who grew up on the south coast of England. Playing a diverse range of groups that span genres such as shoe-gaze and electro-pop. Stefan - also a multi-instrumentalist and high school music teacher. Growing up in New Zealand, studying in Japan and seattling in the UK, he has experienced a diverse range of musical cultures.
#091 How Incubus Killed the Pod

#089 Stone Temple Pilots’ ‘Purple’
In this preposterous post-grunge adventure our heroes explore the sonically chameleon and genre bending Stone Temple Pilots and their not so sophomore slump ‘Purple’. Following the breakout commercial success of their debut, the band were faced with critical backlash with the press writing them off as grunge wannabes. The band set out to prove that they were much more than a nirvana tribute band and went about writing one of the truly eclectic records of the 90s. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs. We are in a period of rebuilding/rebranding and have temporarily paused the Friends of the Show subscriptions. That being said, you can browse through our Mellowtron and Retro designs in the merch store. You can also witness the page so big that it slows the entire internet each time it is loaded, the top 10 page on our site as well as drop us a cheeky voicemail message to suggest an album to study/say g’day.

#088 Cheekface’s ‘Too Much to Ask’
In this indie illustration our heroes dive deep into a newly discovered band. With thanks to a spotify algorithm, Jake was turned onto the gloriously moderate world of Californian indie rockers Cheekface, and their 2022 release ‘Too Much to Ask’. Hooked in by the immediacy of the dry mix, staying for the lyrics and… cheek of the band (can you really blame me with that pun, I kind of had to), Cheekface are proving strong contenders for the ASoundPurchase awards of 2023. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs. #085 Crowded House’s ‘Woodface’
In this special edition of ASoundPurchase our heroes navigate the confined dwellings of Crowded House and their 1991 release ‘Woodface’. A massive band from Stefan’s youth, he was adamant that this was not the album to talk about, instead wanting to talk about the next in the catalogue ‘together alone’; or even the most recent ‘dreamers are waiting’. Yet, this remains a special episode because it was chosen by YOU, the listener, and Stefan knew he couldn’t turn you down. Our heroes travel over the various lineup manouvres and recording sessions that patchworked together to create this album and launched the band’s career in the UK in a big way. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs.

#084 Mad Capsule Markets’ ‘OSC DIS’
In the second jet back to Japan in recent weeks, our heroes delve deep into the cyber-tech world of Mad Capsule Markets and their 2001 release ‘OSC DIS’. With influences ranging from the early Nu-Metal sonority of Slipknot right through to the Ramones-meets-Dick-Dale surf punk from California. The rapid mood changes in this record ensure that the listener can never lose focus. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs. #083 Bon Iver’s ‘i,i’
In this adventure of awe our heroes take a look into the falsetto-filled world of friends and acquaintances which is Bon Iver’s ‘i,i’. At the time of release, each track was released separately over a series of hours and fans were encouraged to form listening parties to soak in the melodies. Packed with guests and co-writers, this album is a complex treasure trove of ideas and songs. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs. #082 Polysics’ ‘National P’
In this folly of fusion our heroes find themselves in Japan studying Polysics. From jumpsuits and Doc Brown inspired glasses, to the beautiful fusion of many contemporary genres. There is something delightfully rudimentary about their approach, although as with most things seemingly simple, there is much more than meets the eye. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs.
