We find comfort in God's Word: He knows us and has known us through eternity. But are we hearing the whole message or just the parts we like?

Thus is a parable about growth. But is there a deeper lesson to be learned?

In our Gospel reading today Jesus takes a break: time away to be renewed in the presence of his Heavenly Father. Here Jesus sets the example for all of us. If we are to fulfill the mission God has for us, we all need sabbath rest now and then.

When Jesus heals, Jesus restores the relationships between God and all of us? As his Church we now play a part in this healing and restoration by being mindful of those right in our midst who feel isolated and alone.

God's Word is for everyone. Following Jesus is not about a state of being. It is a call to doing. In the end, it is an outward focus, always looking for ways to connect, and to widen the net.

Today is Baptism of the Lord Sunday and as we consider his we will remember our own. The takeaway is this: the Holy Spirit changes everything for those who follow Christ.
