Mather Teresa told a story about a family with eight children who had not eaten for days. She hurried to the family with some food. When she reached the family, she saw the faces of little children disfigured by hunger. There was no sorrow or sadness in their faces; just the deep pain of hunger. Mother Teresa gave the mother some rice. The mother divided it unto two and went out carrying half of the rice. When she came back, Mother Teresa asked her where did you go? She answered, “To my neighbor.” Mother Teresa said that she was not surprised that the Mother gave, because poor people are usually generous. But what surprised her was that the mother knew that her neighbors were hungry. Most of us when we face difficulties or suffering, we have the tendency to focus on ourselves and have no time for others.
This story teaches a powerful lesson of what our response should be when God demonstrates his goodness to us. The Mother is the story was thankful to God for his goodness toward her family and the way she demonstrated her thankfulness was by sharing what God had blessed her with, with her neighbor. She took the time to find out the struggles and difficulties her neighbor was facing also.
