A Berger Joint with Mike Henneberger

Mike Henneberger
For more than two decades, I've been lucky enough to have A LOT of different outlets through which my depressive and anxious mind could explore to try to make sense of it all. Scratch that, luck had nothing to do with it. Understanding life, or at least feeling more comfortable in it, set me on a long (maybe lifelong) journey that has never stopped being difficult, and has always required tenacity and dedication. Or perhaps I'm just driven by a minute-to-minute attempt to avoid mental breakdown. Either way, that avoidance has led me to a lot of cool opportunities, some fun adventures, and, yes, even SOME answers. The luck part comes from the fact that I've been able to experience all that through content creation, storytelling, and interviewing many of my musical heroes who have literally saved me with their songs. From writing songs as the lead singer of bands, writing music and entertainment journalism, and producing digital media and video content for companies like Comedy Central, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Vice, Spin, and through a military mental health charity I started called Zero Platoon, I've been able to make it day by day with a little more hope than the day before. A Berger Joint is where I'll be sharing my past and continued quest with anyone else who'd like to come along for the ride. You'll hear Zero Platoon interviews about art and mental health. You'll hear chapters from my upcoming book, Rock Bottom at the Renaissance, about music and mental health. And you'll hear whatever else pops up along the way. Thanks for the company. Let's go.

Zero Platoon - Benjamin Lieber - Head North - Marigold - Visual Artist
It's impossible to capture the depth of Benjamin even with an hour. This 50 minutes is cut down from the two-hour conversation we had many months ago (time that I spent being intimidated and overwhelmed by the idea of cutting this down while still showing how brilliant this guy is). Some of you may know him as the drummer of Head North, or maybe you've seen him as the touring drummer of one of your favorite bands. Or perhaps you've heard his solo material as Marigold. You might not even know that HIS visual art is some of your favorite, since he's designed album covers and visually crazy concept videos for bands like Have Mercy, Seaway, Knuckle Puck and others. He's also an amazing photographer with a beautiful photography book called "Glimpses of Heaven" out now. And if that's not enough, he reads us one of his poems from the book and performs an acoustic version of the Marigold song "Life Goes On."

Rock Bottom Book Club - Ch. 3 - "Settle Down" ft. Commentary by The Dangerous Summer frontman AJ Perdomo
AJ Perdomo, singer and bassist of The Dangerous Summer, joins the Rock Bottom Book Club to discuss his thoughts on the themes and the interpretation of his song "Settle Down" in chapter three of "Rock Bottom at the Renaissance: An Emo Kid's Journey of Falling In and Out of Love In and With New York City," with author Mike Henneberger. The chapter is "basically a suicide note," so the two talk about their experiences with suicidal thoughts and what has helped them overcome them. An abridged version of chapter three from the audiobook promo version of "Rock Bottom at the Renaissance" is also intercut between interview segments for context. If you're dealing with suicidal thoughts or struggling with depression or just dealing with some tough shit, TALK TO SOMEONE. It's nothing to be ashamed of. LOOK...I just did it with one of my heroes, and he just did it with someone who's pretty much a stranger. Sometimes that's easier, and that's why there's this phone number: 1-800-273-8255 "Rock Bottom at the Renaissance: An Emo Kid's Journey Through Falling In and Out of Love In and With New York City" is available now anywhere books and ebooks are sold. Rock Bottom at the Renaissance - Ch. 2 - "Tortures of the Damned" by Bayside
This should go without saying, but don't listen to Ch. 2 without listening to "Introduction" and "Ch. 1 - '23' by Jimmy Eat World." I'm sharing this chapter and one or two more, because my creativity and maybe a little entertainment are all I really have to offer during this weird time that the world is going through (as of writing this, I'm referring to the world shutting down because of Coronavirus). This is the second chapter of my book "Rock Bottom at the Renaissance: An Emo Kid's Journey Through Falling In and Out of Love In and With New York City," and it's probably 50% of what kept me from releasing this book years ago. It's embarrassing and mentions an event in my life that is pretty shameful. BUT...it took those years for me to work on my mental health, and to eventually feel far enough removed from the person in this book, to no longer feel like this isn't a story I can tell. And if it helps just one person see that we are not defined by our mistakes, and we don't have to be defeated by our guilt or shame, then it's more than worth it. It's soundtracked by one of my favorite bands of all time, Bayside. I've seen that band more than any other, and I've been following them since 2003, because their music has achieved that goal that I'm hoping this chapter and this book will. It has shown me that I'm not alone in the things that trouble me or haunt me. And over the years, they have shown me that it's possible to grow and move forward. You can get the book, ebook, or audiobook two months before it's released at www.RockBottomBook.com. ""Rock Bottom at the Renaissance: An Emo Kid's Journey Through Falling In and Out of Love In and With New York City" is a mixtape memoir chronicling one of the lowest lows of author Mike Henneberger's major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder, soundtracked by the music that got him through it. It's about how mental illness can make love and life harder than they need to be, and how the right bands and right songs can sometimes make things a little easier." Rock Bottom at the Renaissance - Ch. 9 - "Your Heart is an Empty Room" by Death Cab For Cutie
Please listen to the "Rock Bottom at the Renaissance - Introduction" Podcast before listening to Chapter 9. You should listen to Chapter 1 also. Huge thanks to all of the Indiegogo Donors, without them hitting our $500 goal on Saturday, Feb. 29, this chapter would not have gotten uploaded. How 'bout this...I'll throw another chapter up when we hit $5000. As of posting this, we're at $3100. If that doesn't motivate you, getting the book two months before it's officially released should. Rock Bottom at the Renaissance - Introduction
This is the most important thing I've ever done. Here is the introduction to my first book, "Rock Bottom at the Renaissance: An Emo Kid's Journey Through Falling In and Out of Love In and With New York City," a mixtape memoir about a time when my major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder took me to one of the lowest lows of my life. "Rock Bottom at the Renaissance" is currently available 2 months before it's official May release date through an Indiegogo I've launched to raise money for marketing and to pay some bands to partner up as it's released. My only goal with this book is to get it in front of the people who need it, those who struggle with mental health issues or just living down their past. And I'm going to need help with that. So, I can't tell you how much I would appreciate you heading over to RockBottomBook.com to pledge to the Indiegogo. Plus, you'll get the book super early, and you'll get some cool perks you won't be able to get anywhere else.
