本集Work Hard Play Hard的主角是畢業於劍橋大學，目前任職於麥肯錫公司的Sunny（化名），來和大叔談談管理顧問產業的龍頭麥肯錫McKinsey，以及當初她的面試經驗。管理顧問產業（ManagementConsulting）主要提供服務給公司的管理階層。服務範圍包括公司策略研擬、產業報告與分析等。麥肯錫公司的組織架構為金字塔型，從入門層級的商業分析師、專員、專案經理、準合夥人、合夥人到最上層的資深合夥人。通常一個計畫的人員編制會由一位專案經理負責帶領三到四個分析師及專員。在這樣由菁英管理的金字塔型架構中，員工不是過關斬將往上爬，就是在某個時間點配合自己人生規畫而選擇轉換跑道。麥肯錫校友經常在各行各業也經常有很好的職涯發展，他們建構起來的人際網絡也成為校友們的共有資源。這也是麥肯錫吸引人的地方。 那麼將要畢業的大學生們該如何進入麥肯錫呢？Sunny提到有兩種方式，其中一個是校園徵才，這樣的招募希望收進來的新血是通才類型的；另一種在業界招募的方式，則希望招收已經有社會及特定產業經驗的專才。另外，公司面試主要的大方向有兩個，包含分享個人經驗及案例面試（Case Interview）。後者主要是透過商業案件的分析，如風險因素、目標如何達成，考驗面試者找出關鍵及正確問題的能力。這裡在此分享如何準備案例面試的聖經：Case in Point (https://cutt.ly/wcK8CAm)。 Sunny在準備面試的時候做了充分的練習與努力，她認為麥肯錫的面試流程標準化且親切，也在面試過程和其他受試夥伴互相幫助成長，Sunny也在加入麥肯錫公司後，體認到這樣的面試程序與測驗便與現在實際參與到的管理計畫相同。 Management consulting focuses on corporate strategies and management issues. McKinsey is a leading firm in this field. Organizationally it is structured as a pyramid starting with Analyst, Associate, Engagement Manager, Associate Partner, Partner, with Senior Partner at the very top. A typical project is led by an Engagement Manager with a handful of Analysts and Associates. Culturally, it is an “up-or-out” meritocracy. The attraction of a firm like McKinsey, in addition to its rigorous approach, is that upon becoming an alum, one steps immediately into an elite network of business leaders, Lou Gerstner (https://cutt.ly/5cK3NHu) being a famous example. Recruiting processes are in two forms. One is for industry specialists. Most people join as a generalist after finishing college or graduate degrees. Consulting firm recruiting is focused on two components. One is personal history. The other, more famous, is the Case interviews. Case interview is a structured business case where the interviewee is expected to demonstrate her fact-finding and analytical abilities. Applying to McKinsey requires rigorous preparation. All the same, she finds the process well streamlined and reciprocally beneficial to candidates with feedbacks. Common mistakes are being underprepared and getting too stressed. For Sunny, the Case study process turned out to be a collaborative process. Dillon與大叔談他的美國高中生活如果你覺得亞洲的學子辛苦，那讓我們來看看在美國加州 Cupertino市 Monta Vista高中 (https://mvhs.fuhsd.org/)的十年級生Dillon 最近都在忙什麼。他規劃高中時期總共要唸（考）9個和大學同等學歷的AP（Advanced Placement）學科，而現在有參加籃球與排球校隊。他從小拉小提琴，現在有參與學校樂團之外，校外還有一個室內樂團，會固定在當地舉辦慈善演出。並且還有參加兩個學校的俱樂部：一個是為中小企業當分析顧問，另一個則是全國性的商業分析比賽。他甚至還有一個自己的podcast！ 大叔們光聽就覺得累了，非常好奇Dillon平常到底有沒有在睡覺。 看到如此優秀的Dillon，大叔們建議他要逆向思考，不要太在意多數大人們倚老賣老、指指點點地提當年勇。每個年代的進步與競爭樣態常常是上一代無法了解的，經驗與建議的確都值得參考，可是最後每個人仍然是在自己的年代裡成長，自己的路如何走出（幸好是）自己要承擔。 努力如Dillon，大叔們也建議他要找到自己的定位。雖然愛因斯坦自己都承認一輩子努力還是不足瞭解量子力學，但他的定位是沒有人質疑的。和他人競爭可以，但是要知道為何而爭，除了不要迷失自己之外，還要適時學會放過自己。最忌諱的例子是像三國的周瑜，爭不過後被氣死，而後還被看扁（超嘔的啊）。 除此之外，大叔們也謝謝Dillon提醒，每天在同溫層努力之外，也不要忘了固定把頭探出去看看，關懷世界現在長什麼樣子，才有機會發現一些出乎意料的驚喜。為身邊、周遭做能力內的貢獻，其實也是成長的重要一環。 Dillon is a sophomore in Cupertino’s Monta Vista High School (https://mvhs.fuhsd.org/) in California, US. He expects to take up to nine (9) AP classes during high school career. (AP stands for Advanced Placement and, upon passing the AP exam, this class can be accepted for college level credit.) As a violinist, he is a member of the school orchestra, participates in an outside chamber music ensemble, and conducts regular benefit concerts in the area. Varsity and junior varsity levels for basketball and volleyball are his current athletic commitment. He is also members of two school clubs where one consults with local businesses and the other competes on business case analyses. This, however, does not make life easier for each new generation. Take Dillon, he is competing within his own cohort and not slackers like the TUX uncles. While this is a burden, it does free every generation from the tyranny of stale wisdom and experiences of the past cohorts.For somebody at Dillon’s caliber, it is important to remember that we are all unique in our own ways; namely, we all have our own weaknesses. The great mind of Einstein never got quantum mechanics. Conversely, a person who is versatile in quantitative analyses can enjoy poetry and arts without conflict. Keeping oneself competitive is important, more important still is the ability to know one’s own limitations and preferences.Finally, we should all be more like Dillon where he reaches out to the wider community. It is all too easy to stay and re-enforce our own bubbles.
