Belief の意味

Belief は、宗教のように何かの存在や、何かが真実であると確信しているという思いがある時に使います。

例文

His belief in God is very strong.

彼の神への信念はとても強い。

He gets angry if anyone challenges his religious beliefs.

彼は誰かが彼の宗教信仰について物を言うと怒り出す。

He has the belief he will win.

彼は自分が勝利するという信念を持っている。

 

「believe」と「believe in」の意味と違い

“believe someone”は、あなたが、その人の言っていることを本当であると受け入れる時に使います。誰かがあなたに本当のことを言っていると思う時に “believe”を使います。

“believe in someone”は、あなたがその人を信じたり、尊重している時に使います。もし、あなたが “you don’t believe in someone” なら、あなたはその人を単に信頼できなかったり、人格に不安があるということです。

例文

I believe you. I know what you are saying is the truth.

僕は君（の言うこと）を信じるよ。君が言っていることは本当だとわかってる。

I believe in you. I know you can do this.

僕は君を信じるよ。君なら出来るってかわってる。

I don’t believe you. I think you are lying.

僕は君（の言うこと）を信じない。君は嘘をついていると思うな。

I don’t believe in Donald Trump. I don’t believe in his policies. I don’t think he will make a good president.

僕はドナルド・トランプを信頼しない。彼の政治は信用できない。よい大統領になるとは思えない。

Believe in 意味１：何かの力や、誰かの存在を信じること

例文

Do you believe in God?

あなたは神を信じますか？

My 12 year old son still believes in Santa.

僕の12歳の息子はまだサンタを信じてるよ。

I never believed in miracles, but something happened to me last night I can’t explain.

私は奇跡なんて信じてなかったけど、昨日の夜に説明出来ない事が起こったのよ。

Believe in 意味２：良い事や、正しい事だと強く信じること。信仰する。

例文

Do you believe in the death penalty?

あなたは死刑を（正しい事だと）信じますか？

I don’t believe in working hard. I believe in working smart.

がむしゃらに働くことを（正しい事だと）信じない。賢く働くことが（正しい事だと）信じるな。

A: Many people don’t believe in gay marriage. What about you?

B: I don’t know. I have never really thought about it that much.
A: I mean, do you think that gay marriage should be legalized?
B: Yes, I think it should be.

A:多くの人は同性婚を信じないけど、あなたはどう思う？

Believe in 意味３：誰かのことを信用、信頼できると確信している。または、何かを上手くやる事が出来る人だと確信している。

例文

Everyone believes in you and your abilities, so I’m making you captain (of the football team).

誰もが君と君の能力を信じている。だから私は君を（フットボールチームの）キャプテンに選ぶのだ。

In life there are many challenges. You need to believe in yourself to succeed.

人生には多くの挑戦がある。成功するために自分自身を信じる必要があるのだ。

Believing in him and his ideas was a mistake. He was all talk and no action.

彼と彼の考えを信じたのは間違いだったわ。彼は口ばかりで、行動を起こさないんだもの。
