本书从武昌举义写到清帝退位，重点着墨于各省的独立过程。辛亥革命不是一蹴而就的，各省的光复经历了截然不同的过程，有的流血暴动，有的平稳过渡，发挥主导作用的，也不尽是革命党人。作者强调回到历史现场，以诸多具体的人物入手，重现辛亥人看到、听到、 感受到的辛亥革命，依据的材料多为当时的报刊登载、日记、回忆录等，抛开宏观的意义，以微观的视角挖掘这场近代史上的重要变革，呈现其中被忽视、被遗忘的细节
