Dr Joel Feinstein
How to explain mathematical concepts in a way that students can understand
Lecture Capture in Mathematics
This is a recording of Dr Feinstein's talk from the Teaching Workshop organised by Dr Rob Wilson, Cardiff, April 23 2015 (https://explainingmaths.wordpress.com/2015/04/22/learning-and-teaching-workshop-at-cardiff/) Dr Feinstein discusses the various approaches he has taken to make and use audiovisual recordings of classes since 2006. In addition to the recording of classes, Dr Feinstein discusses associated uses of IT in teaching, including: the use of tablet PCs for annotating PDF slides with gaps; digital pointer/highlighter software (CursorAttention); in-class voting using mobile devices. The talk includes two short video extracts, and an opportunity for the audience to vote on an old riddle. Dr Feinstein's blog may be viewed at: http://explainingmaths.wordpress.com Dr Joel Feinstein is an Associate Professor in Pure Mathematics at the University of Nottingham.

Using a tablet PC and screencasts when teaching Mathematics - Dr Joel Feinstein - full video
This is one of two recordings of a session given by Dr Joel Feinstein (Nottingham) in Loughborough on November 18 2009 as part of the seminar series "How We Teach" running at the Mathematics Education Centre, Loughborough University. For more information on this seminar series, contact the organiser, Professor Barbara Jaworski, [email protected] See also Dr Feinstein's blog http://explainingmaths.wordpress.com/ The session is about Dr Feinstein's current teaching methodology, and especially his use of a tablet PC and screencasting when teaching mathematics (relating to mathematical analysis and proof). The session includes a demonstration of the methodology, extracts from some screencasts and discussion of many of the issues which arise. This version of the recording is the full video-recording of the session made by the team in Loughborough. The other version of the recording was made using Camtasia on Dr Feinstein's tablet laptop, and is a screencast of everything displayed on the tablet's display, with synchronized audio. That version is rather different in nature, and excludes much of the discussion as comments from the audience were not picked up by Dr Feinstein's microphone.
