Harlem Nights (1987)
What’s better than a mobster classic told by three generations of great comedians? Trying to follow this piecemeal ADD train of random quotes as we chug our way over to New York (aka Los Angeles) for Eddie Murphy’s action-comedy cult classic, “Harlem Nights” (1989), of course. In this critically panned, fan-adored, Gen X fever dream, Richard Pryor plays club owner and “numbers” boss “Sugar Ray” (yes, seriously) who is contending with the scheming likes of disgruntled gangster “Bugsy Calhoune” (no, we’re not kidding) played by the late, great Michael Lerner. Bugsy is not-so-silently fuming over the classic black vs white slight of being second to a highly successful black man, when he turns to corrupt cop “Phil Cantone” (Danny Aiello) to exact a particularly insidious form of street “justice” as he attempts to shut Sugar Ray’s down. The film leans heavily on the comedic prowess of not only Pryor, Murphy (“Quick”), and Redd Foxx (“Bennie Wilson”) but also that of Della Reese (“Vera”), and Arsenio Hall (“Crying Man”) among others to create a romping good time filled with gags, jabs, and fun. Join our krewe as we discuss the importance of films like “Harlem Nights” in establishing a cultural benchmark for the “Ava DuVernay” and “Hobbs” tests, the generational translation(s) that are required to enjoy such films, and just the general fun of quoting some of the film’s most iconic lines like “Kiss my entire ass”, or one of the 133 times the cast drops the F-bomb.  How did Hannah feel about this 80s classic? Does Matt finally find his voice? Will Terry and Garrett just recite the entire movie back to each other? You’ll need to listen to find out! Just bring your ass and check out “Harlem Nights” already and don’t forget to hit us up on socials and/or rate, review, and subscribe! Blazing Saddles (1974)
It's time to saddle up and schlep out west.  Although, with some of the modern choices in this noodle kugel-western you could probably strap on your seat belts.  This week we're rolling our 3CG wagon train out to the wild west with Mel Brooks' 1974 classic, "Blazing Saddles". This movie has a lot to say about racism, sexism, and fill-in-the-blank-ism, in a way that is sure to make you laugh, cringe, maybe even re-evaluate some of your own biases, and then cringe again.  This raunchy comedy follows Bart (Cleavon Little), a black railroad worker who becomes the unlikely sheriff and hero of a racist western town. With the help of his partner Jim (Gene Wilder), Bart sets out to bring some justice, enlightenment and laughs to a town filled with bigoted buffoons. Brooks’ use of crude humor and outrageous antics both leave you in stitches and shine some much-needed light on the prejudices that unfortunately still exist today in a way that doesn’t feel like Mongo’s clobbering you over the head.  Join our own gang of misfits as we explore the film's cultural significance and the behind-the-scenes drama that made “Blazing Saddles” a comedy classic. Will Terry refrain from inappropriate comments? Did Matt feel like he was watching something he shouldn't? What GenX hill is Garrett ready to die on? And how will our resident progressive, Hannah, just flat-out ruin the film for everyone involved? Come along for the ADD wagon ride to hear our Krewe’s unique perspectives on the film's themes of race, identity, and the power of humor in broaching sensitive subjects.  One thing’s for sure: this episode is a wild ride. So, grab your cowboy hats and get ready for a rootin' tootin' (emphasis on tootin’) good time as we explore the hilarity and social commentary that only a Mel Brooks comedy can provide. Oy! Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
TW: There are heavy and pointed discussions of suicide and ideation.  For those of you struggling with those thoughts, we suggest skipping this, or parts of this episode.  If you or someone you know needs help, please dial 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline to speak with someone.  Help is available. You’re never alone.  There’s no need to walk in the dark. . . . Buckle up, 3CG fans, because this week we're diving back into the apex of teen drama and angst with the OG 1955 flick, "Rebel Without a Cause". Another golden Hollywood oldie from our own golden-haired Hollywood old soul.  It becomes increasingly apparent how this movie set the (sound)stage for so many franchises to come as Hannah and the boys delve into the movie that made James Dean an icon and makes us wonder why they were called the silent generation because they sure made a lot of noise.  James Dean stars as Jim Stark, a misunderstood teen who despite his best intentions, always ends up in trouble. Caught in the middle of his parents' strained relationship and constantly searching to find a loving group of his own, Jim turns to an unlikely crew of characters, played by Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, and Ed Platt, to supplement the missing affections of his milquetoast, middle-class family. Spoiler alert: it doesn't end well. Join the krewe as we explore the darkest inventions wrought by teenage angst, the eternal quest for acceptance, and the real behind-the-scenes drama that made “Rebel Without a Cause” a classic. How often does Terry mention James Dean's flawless skin? How uncomfortable will Matt get? Will Garrett offer any insight that doesn't make Hannah roll her eyes? Adventures in Babysitting (1987)
Well, 3CG-ers, this is episode is one for the record books. Sticking around in the 80s which means you probably already guessed this is another of Garrett's picks. We were in a time crunch recording this one so we kept the ADD train on the tracks for what is probably our speediest episode to date.  In his directorial debut, Chris Columbus is at the helm of this Elizabeth Shue lead comedy. Elizabeth plays Chris who has to venture into the big city to save her friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) with her two charges, Brad and Sara, (Keith Coogan and Maia Brewton), and Brad's best friend Daryl played by the talented Anthony Rapp.  How the heck could a family-friendly comedy romp through the big city have problems? Oh you know we will find a way to make you uncomfortable.  What's Matt's reaction to him being filtered out of the last episode as background noise? How often do Terry's bowels make themselves known during this episode? How is it possible Garrett brought this episode in as quickly as he did? How does Hannah pull off the greatest titular quip of all time? You'll have to listen to find out. White Christmas (1954)
So technically nobody picked this episode, although Hannah compiled this list so we are going to give her credit, or is that blame? I guess it depends on which 3CG-er you side with. Even though much to Garrett’s dismay, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation didn’t make the cut this month, we manage to lampoon this “National Treasure” or at least some of us do. Add another Michael Curtiz flick to the pod, the first being Casablanca, with this 1954 musical starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. Did we say musical? Sorry Matt! At least this one is in color, which is about the only color White Christmas offers.  We are going to warn you now this show was recorded post-holiday party, so it starts off the rails and stays there. There’s plenty of discussion about the movie, but there is an equal amount of bizarre rambling side banter that starts with the topic at hand but somehow never seems to make a point in the end.  Is the episode that Terry finally pushes the limit with his over the top outdated antics? Did Matt finally love a musical? Is Hannah the only one that did any research post viewing? What did Garrett do more, derail or steer the show back on track? You’ll have to listen to find out.    Show notes/CW   This episode contains mentions: outdated language, eating disorders, violence against women, sex work, and sexual assault.

Citizen Kane (1941)
Well, 3CG-ers, that foray into watching films in color was short-lived.  We’re going back to black (and white) with a 1941 classic, and we’ll give you one guess as to who picked this one.  Our old-soul-black-and-white-morality-raised-on-the-classics millennial, Hannah, picked our second movie for November and what is arguably one of the greatest films ever made, “Citizen Kane”. Orson Welles wrote, directed, and starred in this classic 2-hour epic that much like “Halloween”, breathed a gasp of fresh air into modern-day cinema.  Funnily enough, it took us about 2-hours to discuss this masterpiece, but don't worry, unlike certain past episodes (“They Live” looking at you), we actually discuss the film. We know you guys like it when we steer away from political discussions and talk about the movie, but when the flashback-laden narrative shows how an aging publishing tycoon lived his life through corruption and political intrigue, it's hard not to steer into the present, and draw direct correlations to current and historical figures.  You'll want to skip this episode if you are not a fan of the G&H show as the two of them discuss the beauty of this film in great detail, while the rest of the boys struggle to keep up.  Poor Matt always gets a little foggy when things are in black and white, and Terry, coming off a long drive from an overnight set, didn't have enough C-4 in his system to fuel his smart-ass, inappropriate remarks. Is this the episode with Terry's lowest word count? Will Matt ever learn to appreciate black-and-white films? What did Garrett say to Hannah that had her refuse to speak? Will she ever forgive him? You'll have to listen to find out. Show notes/CW This episode contains/mentions the following: Suicide, Child abuse, Sexual assault, Violence against women, and Sex work.  References Citizen Kane - Bechdel Test Movie List.
