Being a Vegan and a Competitive Body Builder with Giacomo Marchese
Lisa is joined by Giacomo Marchese, who talks about being a vegan and a competitive body builder. Plantbuilt: A Decade of Compassionate Strength In 2012 Giacomo Marchese and Dani Taylor championed the idea of forming a team of vegan bodybuilders to compete along side non-vegan competitors with the goal of showing that not only could the vegan athletes compete, they could win. They reached out to friends in the community to gauge their interest in participating and the first Plantbuilt team was formed. The team traveled to Austin, Texas to participate in the Naturally Fit Games- a multi sport expo, and dominated the bodybuilding stage. Since then Plantbuilt has competed two more times broadening our base of athletes to include more strength based sports and every time successfully spreads the message of cruelty free strength. 2022 will be the fourth time the team sets out to change hearts and minds, with some familar faces and some new additions to the family. Help us celebrate our 10th year of activism and keep checking in for updates about the team and the competition. PLANTBUILT Powered by VEGAN STRONG Accomplishing elite levels of strength, health, and wellness, is an extension of our compassion for life. Our lifestyle requires physical effort beyond our normal capacity, furthermore is the use of proper nutrition, rest, and mental well being. None of these require the destruction of animals . As a collective (PlantBuilt) we live, train, compete, and educate in our communities, showing the success of compassionate Veganism

Her book was highlighted in the New York Times as one of the top five books to read to understand the opioid epidemic (Zuger, 2018). "Drug Dealer, MD" combines case studies with public policy, cultural anthropology, and neuroscience, to explore the complex relationship between doctors and patients around prescribing controlled drugs. It has had an impact on policy makers and legislators across the nation. Dr. Lembke has testified before Congress and consulted with governors and senators from Kentucky to Missouri to Nevada. She has been a featured guest on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, MSNBC with Chris Hayes, and numerous other media broadcasts.  Using her public platform and her faculty position at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Lembke has developed multiple teaching programs on addiction and safe prescribing, as well as opioid tapering. BOOK DESCRIPTION: Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting.... The increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption. In Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author, explores the exciting new scientific discoveries that explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain…and what to do about it. Condensing complex neuroscience into easy-to-understand metaphors, Lembke illustrates how finding contentment and connectedness means keeping dopamine in check. The lived experiences of her patients are the gripping fabric of her narrative. Their riveting stories of suffering and redemption give us all hope for managing our consumption and transforming our lives. In essence, Dopamine Nation shows that the secret to finding balance is combining the science of desire with the wisdom of recovery.
