Terrible
I have listened to a lot of true crime podcasts over the years and this one is by far the worst. Every cardinal podcasting sin you can think of, this series commits. 30 minutes of actual true crime stretched out into 10 hours? Check. Hours of unnecessary interviews that lead to nothing? Check. Glacial pacing? Check. Attributions of malice and wrong doing to a new person every episode only to exonerate them the next episode? You got it. Do they actually solve the case? Hah, of course not. What makes this podcast truly terrible though is the narrator, David. To be clear, this is not a podcast about a child abduction. This is a podcast about a man child who is either genuinely seeking self actualization through a 40 year old child abduction cold case, or who is cynically using said tragedy for self aggrandizement. Nothing about this series is journalism; everything is told through David’s perspective and we get to hear every inappropriate, irrelevant anecdote that comes to his mind. David tells us how he felt personally called to solve this case because he grew up in the same town. He frequently uses language invoking destiny and fate to aggrandize insert himself into the story of this child’s abduction. He tells us about his dreams. His DREAMS! Over and over again David bemoans “oh what am I doing trying to solve this 40 year old case!” But nonetheless conveys a strong, conceited sense of purpose that he will finally bring closure to the victims parents. Spoiler alert: he doesn’t. What he succeeds at is using their child’s abduction for his own gain. This podcast is his journey and quite frankly I find it cynical, self indulgent and disgusting.

Shines light on important issues!
Great show and reporting! So happy someone is taking the time to discuss these cases of missing women.

Another excellent investigation!
David’s heart for these families is heard in each episode. So good.

Season 8
I started Season 8 but had to stop when DR referred to mass graves of indigenous children. There is not one shred of evidence supporting the existence of mass graves. In fact, several sites have been excavated and nothing has been found. It calls into question all of his work. I wonder how much of what he says is actually true. Can’t listen to a show when the creator has no credibility.

Love!
I'm completely addicted. David's reporting and investigative skills make listeners forget it's a podcast. I can visualize everything he's saying.

My favorite true crime podcast
David actually goes through the entire case detail by detail and more often than not, able to find new things and continues his work to truly make a difference in the cases he takes on. He’s always kind and describes the dogs he comes across 10/10 would recommend if you need a good show to binge

Good stories
Love the show. But please, what is with that awful nails on a chalkboard song.

Season 1 solve?
The show is wonderful and David has a gentle and kind way of dealing with victims’ families. I’m curious if the McNaughton family ever tried submitting their dna to ancestry sites. If their son/brother is still alive and doesn’t realize he was kidnapped, it could be a way to find one another.

Subjectivity
I’ve enjoyed listening to your shows until you decided to dip into abortion. You alienate listeners when you don’t report objectively. Isn’t that how you were trained? No one wants to know what side of politics you’re on. Knowing you support abortions is sad.

Really well done
I just binged all 8 seasons while I work, I really enjoyed them all. I truly feel for all the families & people affected by these horrible crimes. And I hope this helps get Justice & closure for everyone Involved. I’ve lost family & friends to murder & it never gets easier when someone you love is taken violently. Justice will be dealt in this life or the next. Keep up the great work

The pod I recommend to everyone
I absolutely love this podcast and have since the beginning. There is something about David’s voice and tone that is so easy to listen to. He really deep dives into this cases and becomes apart of families and friend groups it seems. I always look forward to another season.

Consistently stellar
David Ridgen is integral to true crime. He consistently brings a mix of integrity, unimaginable tenderness, and poetic rumination on life and landscape. I truly don’t know how he’s able to hold all of the grief he delves into and deliver it with respect and freshness each season. David presents each perspective of the family and loved ones with the intelligence they deserve, not the sleaze or sensationalism that’s become rampant in the genre. I’m drawn to true crime when it expands my empathy, and David is a master at doing so. Plus, that accent is legit. Dane Klingaman

Riveting, professionally done & engaging
David Ridgen is a superb journalist an incredible journalist, writer, and producer and also an incredible storyteller. Your interpersonal style whilst interacting with the people involved in the investigations, keep the listener very engaged and focused. Im very happy with the new season!

Too slow
About a year ago I wrote a review saying: Good podcast but season 1 feels like it just moves too slow. Will give another season a try but if they all move this slow, probably not for me. Update: I gave it another try with Season 8. Still soooo slow moving. I like long-form journalism but I actually get bored listening to these episodes. Note to host - Not every clip adds value to the story.

One of my faves!
I have been listening to SKS since the beginning & am already looking forward to the next season! For those complaining about having to subscribe - you don’t - you just have to wait for the weekly drop! I love the attention to detail, David’s voice, and how he humanizes the people involved. David truly cares about solving his cases, & it is apparent in his story telling. Well done!

David Ridgen is my DAD.
I have two favorite podcasts; Criminal, and SKS. David Ridgen is an amazing balance of demanding and polite, and is relentless in the face of refusal. I’m a US citizen and I trust David more than most of my national media. His podcasts are not to be missed.

WAS the best, not anymore.
In past seasons I would have given this podcast 5 STARS. But now (Season 8) you can only listen to a certain point, then you have to subscribe/pay. No thank you. I agree with other reviews: if you want more people to listen/possibly HELP this cold case even, then keep it free. Seems shady, CBC.

Beautifully poignant podcast
This was thoughtfully& beautifully executed. My heart goes out to Lori & I feel a heartbreaking yearning to know what happened to this sweet girl. It kills me that indigenous women are treated like trash& thrown away. I hope Angel is at peace. Thank you for a stellar podcast David.

Amazing Pidcast
When will people catch on to the fact that when you see a season of a podcast that says subscription it MEANS that one episode at a time is available per week. The subscription portion is actually pointing out to you that you have the option to have the full season to access all at once if you are subscribed. Most if not all well known established podcasts would never switch completely over to all subscription. It would defeat the purpose of getting the word out there and sharing the information to help solve cases and achieve Justice for the victims, which is the goal main point of their Investigating and reporting on those cases in the first place. These types of negative reviews are just distracting and completely avoidable if you just scroll through the episodes you would clearly see that each week a new one is available.

I loved listening to David, his thought process and description of different situations. So disappointed that we now have to subscribe to hear the rest of the story. I just can’t do that.

Best of the best
Always look forward to a new season. David is one of the best podcasters out there. Have been listening for years and never disappoints.

Too long winded
These episodes have potential , but just don’t hold my attention. The episodes have so much unnecessary info included making them too long and the seasons don’t need to be told in so many episodes. A lot of the episodes are just filler episodes that aren’t needed.
bigtexan28
Season One is Agonizingly Boring
How did this not get edited for length?? HORRIBLE
DrBizzyR
Subscription!!!
If you start this one, you’ll never finish unless you buy it. So, are interested in money or getting the case solved? Your motives are on full display. Paying for access to additional info or sources is no problem. Profiting from unsolved cases is nasty. Introduction - Ep3 are available Ep4 - Ep7 are subscription only

Somehow this guy can make murder sound like a relaxing day at the spa! I have enjoyed every season D. R. has made so far! Highly recommend.

SKS
Each season is beautifully crafted. David is the best host and such a thoughtful person and that comes through every episode of every season. These families all deserve justice and you can feel their pain, hope, loss and love for each victim in these seasons.

Brilliant!
Ridgen is a master at his craft. I’d love for him to visit my community and see what he can make of the MMIW cases here. Incredible journalism and storytelling. He gives a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.

Follow up?
Not the best season of SKS, but it’s at the Ridgenian level we are accustomed to. Looking forward to follow ups based on the work he does after returning to TO.

Annoyed listener
I started binge listening last week and listening to a few season decided to jump to season eight. Well now subscription only so hence the review. I will no longer be subscribing to this podcast.
Love to Research
Great Reporting
I always binge these stories. Great reporting that brings you into the experiences of those involved. I’m surprised some feel season 7 is political. Politics was never mentioned. It seems some listeners are so racially biased, they can’t listen to stories related to people they don’t support. I think David is a better journalist for reporting on a diverse range of topics. Great job

I listen to all of his shows as soon as they come out. So many have been really life-changing for people.

Listen David…
The way I binge listen to anything you put out is alarming. Thank you for your reporting and bringing this story to light, thank you for telling women’s stories but most importantly indigenous women’s stories.

WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!! I’ve been waiting SO long for Season 8. This is the podcast that got me hooked on podcasts… top top quality. Thank you for keeping it going!!!

Used to love and recommend; not after S7
Season 7 went woke with obvious political narrative and bias. Podcasts jump the shark when the hosts feel the inevitable call to “use their platform” to voice a political agenda. I might check back, I might unfollow.

Propaganda
I came with an open mind, no idea who this podcast belongs to. Within minutes the lies started to unfold. Unbelievable. So many lies in one episode. Shame.

Investigating and beyond
David’s voice is mesmerizing and his questioning and journalistic skills are unmatched. Too often I find myself upset by the basic “common sense” he uncovers that was originally overlooked in these cases. Love his devotion to his craft and passion to seek justice!
MrsCoy2018
Outstanding!
David does an amazing job of transporting listeners to wherever he is through excellent investigative techniques and narrative. I love that he lets others tell the story while he asks probing and direct questions without bullying his subjects. He is incredibly professional and one of the best “podcasters” I have ever heard. You are really missing out if you’ve never listened to one of his shows.
