But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community.  Marion is a Pilates instructor. She first heard of fasting around 2018-2019, but she wasn’t ready and filed the information away. During the early stages of the pandemic in 2020, she heard about it again and was ready to dig in a bit more. The discussion shines a light on Marion's battle with disordered eating, a struggle to break free from the dieting cycle, and her extensive research into the fasting lifestyle, with notable references to books by Jason Fung and Gin's book, Fast Feast Repeat. Marion's intermittent fasting journey is as much about self-discovery and health as it is about weight management. Marion describes the improved clarity of thought and increased productivity that comes with being in a fasted state. Their conversation underscores the personalization and flexibility of fasting schedules, as Marion adjusts her patterns to suit her professional teaching duties and rigorous exercise regimen. Marion has enjoyed improved skin, more muscle tone, an energy surge that fuels her passion for running, and a younger biological age, all while maintaining a naturally intuitive approach to her fasting regimen—a cornerstone of Marion's fasting experience. Gin's message about the importance of not comparing one's fasting experience to another's resonates throughout the episode, endorsing a journey tailored to individual needs and responses. As the episode draws to a close, Marion offers heartfelt advice to newcomers in the fasting community. Her key takeaway encourages individuals to trust their instincts, eschew rigid adherence to fasting schedules, and focus less on the numbers on a scale and more on the transformative journey that lies ahead. Marion's story is a beacon of hope for listeners, evidencing the profound capability of intermittent fasting to revolutionize one's lifestyle when approached with patience and self-compassion. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community.  Susanne is a retired medical writer. Susanne shares her past struggles with weight gain following college, her numerous attempts at different diets leading to a cycle of loss and regain, and her discovery of IF which introduced a new chapter of health and wellness into her life. Susanne describes her earlier days trying various diets like Weight Watchers and low-carb, each providing temporary success but ultimately failing due to constant cravings and an unenjoyable restriction. It wasn't until 2018, upon reading The Obesity Code by Jason Fung, that Susanne decided to try IF, quickly finding her stride with the Delay, Don't Deny approach and the clean fast. Susanne has settled into a hybrid approach, with one down day each week. Her down day routine includes black coffee in the morning and water for the day, while her up days are more relaxed. She prefers the full fast down day option because she doesn’t want to count calories, something she admits she is triggered by. Gin points out the essential nature of personalizing IF to suit individual preferences and lifestyles, affirming that there isn't one universally superior fasting method. We each get to tweak it till it’s easy! Susanne has returned to her college clothing size and has managed to maintain her weight through a combination of discipline and a joyful approach to IF, highlighting the importance of enjoyment over willpower.  Susanne‘s advice: Susanne emphasizes the power of mindset and self-talk in achieving success as an intermittent faster. She underscores how important it is to enjoy the process and make the lifestyle both sustainable and pleasurable. Her parting advice is for others to be patient, stay positive, and find joy in the journey, advocating for a gentle approach when sharing IF with the curious, reinforcing that it's all about helping those who are ready to embrace the change. Everything changed when she picked up Gin's book Delay, Don't Deny, prompting her to start her own IF journey on April 19, 2020. Zoraida shares the numerous health benefits she's experienced since starting intermittent fasting. She was pre-diabetic with high insulin levels. These victories extended beyond the scale, contributing to her overall well-being and confidence. Zoraida discusses the impact her intermittent fasting journey has had on her family. Her children have followed suit in adopting healthier eating habits, and though her son was initially skeptical about fasting, he has become more curious about its benefits. Both Zoraida and Gin highlight the importance of having support from their families as they navigated through their dietary changes. During the episode, we hear about lifestyle shifts and dietary changes like Zoraida transitioning from adding creamer to her coffee to enjoying it black. We also dive into the struggles Gin and Zoraida faced with food, especially processed foods that are engineered to be irresistible. Zoraida admits her challenges with sweets, while Gin speaks about her weakness for cheesy, crunchy snacks. Both emphasize the importance of finding a balance and the power of self-awareness regarding food choices. As the episode concludes, Zoraida offers heartfelt advice for anyone at the beginning of their intermittent fasting path: Give yourself grace and be patient with yourself. Episode 397: Melissa Boyd
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Melissa Boyd from Georgetown, TX. Are you ready to take your intermittent fasting lifestyle to the next level? There’s nothing better than community to help with that. In the Delay, Don’t Deny community we all embrace the clean fast, and there’s just the right support for you as you live your intermittent fasting lifestyle.  You can connect directly with Gin in the Ask Gin group, and she will answer all of your questions personally. If you’re new to intermittent fasting or recommitting to the IF lifestyle, join the 28-Day FAST Start group. After your fast start, join us for support in The 1st Year group. Need tips for long term maintenance? We have a place for that! There are many more useful spaces beyond these, and you can interact in as many as you like.  Visit ginstephens.com/community to join us. An annual membership costs just over a dollar a week when you do the math. If you aren’t ready to fully commit for a year, join for a month and you can cancel at any time. If you know you’ll want to stay forever, we also have a lifetime membership option available.   IF is free. You don’t need to join our community to fast. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community.  Melissa is a real estate agent.  Growing up, she was never skinny but wanted to be. She tried many diets, and she tracked calories and measured food, but could never sustain the weight loss. In 2022, Melissa was diagnosed with ADHD. Her doctor suggested that she try IF to help with symptoms. After researching IF, Melissa found Fast Feast Repeat and began her journey. She has lost 30 pounds. Melissa better understands her ADHD and feels she is no longer working against her body. She enjoys the energy and peace IF has brought to her life. Melissa’s advice: Be patient. IF can take time but you will better understand yourself in the process.
