Steph Kallstrom
In this episode I speak with Steph Kallstrom. Steph was born in Peru and adopted by her mother and raised in Canada. As for most of us equestrians she fell in love with horses the first time she saw them and went into the world of Hunter/jumpers. Steph is a big part of the voice of Black Equestrians. And she has so much to teach us, if we can stop and listen. I have been waiting with great anticipation for this chat from the moment Steph said yes and booked in to have her interview. Steph is someone whose voice I listen to. Every time she posts on her socials or writes a new blog I read up and take note. I always learn something new. Steph is a minority in our equestrian world in many ways. She had a choice to stay in her lane and keep doing her thing and be happy enough. As you will hear in this interview, she is busy enough already, she didn’t need to take on another cause. But this is not just another cause for Steph, this is her life, she writes from experience and her perspective always teaches me something new. As a white woman I can only use my imagination for a lot of the racism that black equestrians encounter on a daily basis. And a lot of it is not a big event trauma, it’s the little things every day that are ever present and eat away at the most basic need we all have as humans, the need to belong. And it’s not just giving me perspective that I admire and learn from Steph. It’s how she writes and the feeling I get when I read her work. In Steph’s words I hear a strong and very intelligent Woman who is fierce and will not be bullied into submission by those trying to dull her words and make her sit down and wait her turn. She reminds me of the wild horses making trainers change their ways as they will not submit to the old traditional training methods. I love reading Steph’s work as I strive to be a voice in the way that she is. Her words are thoughtful, heartfelt and moving and always, every single time they are the truth. She calls out anyone who tries to shame or stifle her. That’s what I mean by fierce. I hope you enjoy our conversation and I hope you go and follow Steph on her socials and support the incredible change she is making in the horse world. Jim Masterson The Masterson Method
In this episode I speak with Jim Masterson, the creator of the Masterson Method. The Masterson Method is a form of body work that you can learn to do on your own horse and you can also go deeper into training and become a practitioner.I’ve always marvelled at the amount of body work modalities in both the human and horse world and love the fact that there are so many because it is a reflection of the individuality of both humans and horses. With all of our complexities and differences, we can look at what can support us and our horse at any moment in time. The Masterson Method is one of those that you may very well want in your tool-box, and not just for the sake of body work. What I learned in this conversation with Jim is how this is more than a body work for horses. It is also a way to connect with your horse. If you can do this method of body work, then you will be a conscious horse person. Because to do this work you have to let your mind go, let go of the outcome and see what your horse has to say, or how they respond, in each moment.Sounds amazing right?Well I thought so to.Thank you to those of you who believed Jim was going to be a great podcast guest and asked me to interview him as you were right. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.To connect with Jim and The Masterson Method click any of the links below.Website: https://mastersonmethod.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MastersonMethodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mastersonmethod/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdCz74CUaLv8YnNhcRyACOwhttps://www.youtube.com/user/mastersonmethodTwitter: https://twitter.com/MastersonMethod

From as little as a cup of coffee a month, you can help me keep this podcast going. There are many tiers that you can choose from and if everyone who listens gave only $5 per month, it would make a massive positive difference to me.There is a tier in there for a small business subscription just like the one Peter Papp took up from Peter and the Herd, this is the one where your business gets a mention each week on the podcast. Peter works with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. Peter has had communication with my mare Gypsy, who is the mare with me in the podcast picture and he was spot on about everything so I can highly recommend his work personally. Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd.A huge shout out to our new Patreon subscribers. Jennifer Morris, thank you for joining the Patreon Community. In this episode I spoke with Robyn Hood. Robyn is the sister of Linda Tellington-Jones, the creator of the Tellington TTouch method of bodywork.Robyn and I talked about the Tellington TTouch Method and how it came about in the first place. It is amazing to hear how someone was able to experience something for themselves and then go on to create their very own form of bodywork to help horses.Robyn is an amazing woman and horse person in her very own right. We spoke about so many topics in the horse world including how we as women need to advocate for our horses and be in our power. We also talked about how to choose a trainer of any kind.About their words matching their actions. Robyn suggested we look at what do they do when what they are doing doesn’t work.We even talked about why having water available for your horse during any training or body work session is really important for both you and your horse. This is a rich conversation that I enjoyed immensely.I have put a couple of links in the show notes but there are so many different pages and groups on facebook that I suggest if you want to follow the Tellington TTouch Method that you put Tellington TTouch into the search bar of Facebook and find the one that is in your country. As Robyn says, there are a lot. So head on over there after you’ve listened to find out more about what is happing in your area. You can also gather more information on Tellington TTouch herehttps://ttouch.com/index.htmlhttps://ttouch.ca/© Copyrighted

You may also like to check out their HeartHorse podcast it’s another great free resource from the HeartHorse team.In this episode I speak with Anja Beran.Anja is a classical dressage trainer who grew up believing classical dressage was the only way to ride so when she saw modern dressage, she was shocked to see how they rode.If you have ever wondered the difference between classical and modern dressage, then this is going to be a great learning moment for you as it was for me.Anja tells me that horses were originally trained for fighting and to fight your horse needed self-carriage. Riders needed one hand to hold a sword and fight, so their horse needs self-carriage with the rider using one hand for the reigns.Anja videoed the best modern dressage horses in the world and slowed the video down to show us all, that the movements they were making and how they are executed are not true to form.We talked about how in modern dressage comps the horse who is best ridden does not win. It’s the horse who is the best natural mover, who may not be ridden as well as the others, that wins. Everything is in reverse.I asked how in the world we can begin classical dressage competitions to overtake the modern dressage competitions. We talked about how much change that would realistically take.Anja also talked about that she believes that there is no such thing as an unwilling horse and how we as humans can do so much more for our horses just in the way that we train and think when we train.Anja has online courses now and if you have ever wanted to try classical dressage go to her website and have a look as there are a few to choose from. There are comprehensive ones and also ones that are broken down to just the canter. And if you think you have the wrong kind of horse for dressage then listen in as we discuss that as well. This was an inspiring talk and I do hope that I hope is one that can plant the seed and bring about real change in the dressage world for all horses. To connect with Anja you can follow the links below.ONLINE COURSES https://e

You may even find the episode where I was a guest on their podcast talking about my life with horses and how this podcast and the conscious horse movement came about. In this episode I spoke with Mark Langley from Equine Ability. Mark is a man who grew up with horses and like so many from this podcast, started to question the training methods he had learned while travelling overseas. He saw a lot of push button horses that were shut down and he got curious as the driving pressure seemed to be shutting them down. And as happens so many times when you begin to question things, he was led to books written by Mark Rashid who gave him permission to take a different direction. He changed his main training method to “How can I help?” he realised that like Tom Dorrance said, a horse follows a feel not getting chased by it and his new way of training was born. It’s really interesting to hear that Mark began to see more shut down horses than ever when he started hosting clinics. We had a great conversation about shut down horses and he gives a lot of tips and examples and a lot of things to think about. And he made a great point, it’s us that shuts down horses, not pressure.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. You may even find the episode where I was a guest on their podcast talking about my life with horses and how this podcast and the conscious horse movement came about. In this episode I speak with Caroline Hegarty who created a community called Equitopia.Caroline felt disempowered as a horse owner as the experts she has in farriers and trainers of her horses were telling her they knew best. Even when she was able to be brave and speak up they still shut her down. So being the amazing woman she is, Caroline decided to do something about it and created an online community where you as a horse owner can educate yourself, find support and also find great expert in their fields who are collaborative and open and always put the horse first.I love what Caroline has created and she will continue to grow what she has done and is truly helping horses all over the world to have a better life by empowering the owners like you and me.Equitopia has the course by Dr Sue Dyson as well, the Ridden Horse Ethogram that I spoke with Sue about a couple of episodes ago. Belinda has been on my radar for a few years as she coaches locally and I have seen the calibre of people who have worked with her and swear by her training and have always wanted to know more. And let me tell you Belinda exceeded all of my high expectations of a wonderful interview. Belinda reminded me of so many things that I value about working with horses and these things can so easily be lost and forgotten in searching for the correct method or techniques.Belinda believes that if you are focusing on technique or methods without having looked into the horse’s eyes and connected with their soul, then your technique will not ever matter nor will it work to build true connection with your horse. This was such an enlightening conversation and such a pleasure.
