Lifetime of reporting on 1 story- AMAZING!
This story is complete! It’s not just a relationship, a killing, an investigation and the final punishment. The end. NO! What happened for the next 20 yrs? This podcast covers it all. Thank you for telling the whole story! Great job!!

Wow
I was due to have my first child Dec 1999. My husband was professional football player at the time for the Washington (Redskins then) Football Club now. I was beyond obsessed, saddened , and terrified by what had happened. I typed into Google what happened to Ray Caruth and this information for the podcast came up! This is done so well. So informative.

Thank you so much
Saundra Adams and Chancelor are inspirations. The show brought me to tears, gave me pause, and was such an inspiration. God bless Saundra, she and Chancelor will forever be in my prayers

Excellent podcast!
Often times the victim gets lost as the focus settles on the person behind a crime. This podcast gives SUCH amazing perspective about Cherica and her miracle son. It makes the whole situation even more heartbreaking. Her mother is a pure saint. May we all strive to be more like the human being she is.

Thanks
Referred here by Peter Kings latest column this past Monday. A warm accounting of a Mom, a grandson and rehabilitation that touched me. Scott Boyle; thanks for your EXTENSIVE reporting. Charlotte is lucky to have you. Much continued success. Part 8 was all about forgiveness, moving on, but . . .

One of the best
This podcast was one of the best I’ve ever heard. It went so in depth and the information was presented in a very fair and balanced way. Sandra Adams spirit and capacity to forgive makes me want to be a better human being.

Incredible
What a woman Saundra Adams is! If I could be half a kind and forgiving as she is, I will be lucky! My heart strings were pulled from the beginning. I was in tears by the end.

The last three episodes
Saundra Adams, Cherica’s mom, is a truly remarkable woman. This was a great podcast but the final couple episodes were especially moving. The show did right by the Adams family to prominently feature and speak to Cherica’s son, Chancellor. Good reporting and original interviews by a reporter who knows this story well.

MAGNIFICENT PODCAST!!!
Scott Fowler delivered a riveting tale of the rise and fall of football star Rae Carruth and a life after death story that was filled with the aftermath, heartache, and the power of true love and forgiveness. This podcast made me weep, made me laugh, and made me LISTEN. Saundra Adams is an incredible woman. This Podcast gave a beautiful insight to the incredible grace that she exemplifies as well as the forgiveness that she heroically bestows. Chancellor Lee is a beautiful testament to the life of his mother, Cherica.

Heartbreaking and Inspirational
A heartbreaking story that leads to us to the light of forgiveness and love. Cherica, Chancellor and his Gma are the heroes of this story. They teach us to look at those we love and find purpose. They are exemplary examples of how to live even when faced with inhumanity. God Bless you, G-ma and Chancellor, and thank you for sharing your story. ♥️🌈🦋🌸🙏🏻

Great job for giving a voice to those affected by this murderer
The phone and court recordings in this podcast are absolutely heart-wrenching. I’ve listened to dozens of crime podcasts and haven’t got the chills as much as I did here. Amazing job for giving a voice to Cherica, her mom and of course her son, Chancellor. What a WARRIOR. I can’t believe Rae is a free man now.

Good, not great
I listen to a LOT of podcasts, especially true crime. You can tell there was a lot of work, research and effort put into this. The story is so sad, sensational and gripping that it just BEGS for a podcast and this one was well done EXCEPT the audio at times is VERY poor. There are times when you can’t hear the interviews, the court proceedings etc. I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts and when this happens, the person giving the podcast will cut in and say, “you couldn’t hear that”, or “the audio here is hard to understand but this is what he/she said,” thus filling the listeners in so we don’t miss a beat. With this podcast however, that is not done and the listeners miss crucial moments I think. There was some dialogue from the shooter that I struggled to make out and I still don’t know what he said.

Amazing!!
This was my first podcast and I’m hooked. I was about 10 years old when this happened and I remember it being one of the first tragic events that I understood and remembered. I always wondered how everyone was now and this captured everything from the beginning to now beautifully. The last episode was beautiful and gives me hope that he is a changed man and will some day have a relationship with both of his children!

Lost a golden opportunity to explore other perspectives
I rated your podcast a three stars because I think you failed to bring relevant issues to the discussion about Mr. Carruth and Ms. Cherica that can really help others make better choices in dire situations. 1. You do not credit The Nation Of Islam or which ever Muslim organization who reached out to mentor Mr. Carruth and help him learn to make better choices when he feels frustrated. 2. You fail to get the message to females that Ms. Cherica erred when she tried to force a man to accept her and enfold her in his celebrity lifestyle. She herself used her unborn child to exploit this to try to desperately maintain a relationship with a man who clearly was not interested in her in the way she wanted. We females have a lot of power over males, but also need self-respect to walk away when males expresses they are not interested in us in a deeper way in which we want. This young lady would be alive today to raise her son if she had‘ve faced the reality and left this man alone. Am I blaming her for his crime? If she cannot force him to commit himself to a loving life with her, she definitely cannot force him to arrange her cold -bloodied murder. That is the point. Ms. Cherica had no influence over Mr. Carruth and should have shown him the door - even before sharing her body with him. These are two messages you fail to posit in your podcast. Your podcast is like other routine investigations in celebrity crimes.

Well done!
Perseverance shines through in the grandmother’s love and support following a tragic loss and also in Scott Fowler’s effort to tell the story and get it right. Well worth the listen. Inspiring.

Thumbs up 👍🏻
Why would any parent conspire to kill their unborn child? Cherika did an amazing job getting help for herself and Chancellor. **heads up** Episode 7 will make you cry. This was such a great and sad podcast. And also a very well rounded story.

Saundra Adams is an amazing person! I am not close to the woman she is. Just amazing.

Did they listen before they posted the episodes?
There are chunks when we are supposed to hear the audio for interviews or court testimony that are just metallic whispers. Happens in the "on trial" episode and others. Super unprofessional.

Reporting at its Best!
As an avid podcast listener, my interests vary far and wide. In my humble opinion, this podcast has surpassed all others. Skill, professionalism and a reporting at is finest (and most vulnerable) have joined forces to tell a larger story. A story that has honestly, left me changed. I would recommend this podcast to anyone and everyone. Thank you!

INSPIRING!!!!
What an amazing story!! So sad but so much inspiration!! I’m in awe of Sandra Adams & baby boy Lee.... I wish I could meet her and tell her how much of an angel she is! I had heard of this story but didn’t know nearly all the details. Thank you for doing this podcast and all the research done. It was a great listen & I hope you will find more stories to share with us!!!!

This is not about Ray Carruth...
This story is because of the football player, but it is the pregnant girlfriend and her mother who emerge as victims who rise to to be heroines. Scott Fowler has done a masterful job following this history and weaving the pieces together. The editing is exceptional. Interviews with the criminals in jail over a cell phone is riveting. But the raw strength and presence of mind on the 911 tape of an 8 months pregnant woman shot 4 times will haunt you. The wisdom and determination of her mother to raise her grandson handicapped from those gunshots will have you cheering for them both. What a tragic story, but what a testament to the women and the young boy. I've listened to many of the well known crime series, including another based in NC (with the same defense attorney,) and this by far is the best I have heard. Great job.

Truly Amazing
What a wonderful and powerful story of a tragedy and horrific crime to something miraculous and inspiring.

An informative and worthwhile listen
Amazing work on your Carruth podcast. As a CU Buffs fan watching this occur as a kid I didn’t really know too much about it. This shines a positive light on Chancellor’s life and the amazing work his grandmother has done. The epilogue was a fantastic addition and I nervously waited its release.

Gripping Narrative
Quite the story told over nearly 20 years by 1 reporter. Such an endorsement for local journalism (not sensational infotainment). Really make one think about the concepts of love & forgiveness. Series could have been at least 1 episode shorter, but Fowler’s voice carries the series through. Epilogue was a better closer...and yet the story continues.

Powerful & Inspiring
Scott Fowler & the Charlotte Observer team have done an amazing job in revisiting this story and allowing us to understand the repurcussions and lives still affected by this heinous crime. Saundra and Chancellor's interviews brought me to tears.

Outstanding podcast
This is one of the best podcasts on iTunes. Scott Fowler’s tireless investigation and reporting on this over the past two decades is evident from the first minute until the last. It’s equal parts sad and uplifting. A warning, though: it’s addictive and you won’t be able to stop listening until it’s over ... so set aside some time. Great job.

So good!
Really moving and wonderful. I am so moved by Sandra’s spirit. What an incredible person. Great reporting too...everyone involved with this project should be very proud. You have turned something tragic into something uplifting and beautiful. This is what great media is about.

Really good!
I have lived in Charlotte most of my life. I have been a Panther fan since their inception and remember this whole odyssey. I really enjoyed Scott's work on this, bringing back many memories (mostly bad!) and new little insights and such that I had never heard.

Binge-worthy
What an incredible story. I already knew the ending, but from the first five minutes I couldn’t stop listening. This is part murder mystery, part inspirational love story. It’s the best podcast series I’ve heard.

Amazing Storytelling
This is the most amazing podcast ever. Granted this was my first podcast. But kuddos to the Charlotte Observer for not just telling the story of Cherica Adams, but for telling Chancellor Lee Adams story. Often times victims are lost in the stories of violence, but this podcast changed this for me. The way this story was told from a neutral point and all sides, has reaffirmed my belief that journalism isn’t just about telling facts, but telling the impact that has been had. Thank you for allowing us to know about your daughter and grandson. Best to you Sandra. And to the main narrator, when you choked up talking about your son, tears streamed from my eyes. Thank you so much for telling this story. I look forward to hearing more.

Journalism at its best
I’m in awe of how well the journalist put this story together. The way you humanized all of the characters. The way you perfectly inserted clips from the 911 call to excerpts from the hearing to comments from the mother, kept me listening. Bravo.
