Retired Navy SEAL, Chris Sajnog, is one of our most popular guests. He is the premier firearms instructor in America, a bestselling author, and the host of the SEAL Training Podcast. The Dad Edge went to his studio in San Diego for a live, in-person discussion about fatherhood, and we really went deep. Chris was abandoned by his father and carries the wound with him to this day. He vowed not to be like his estranged dad and gave up his accomplished military life to be there for his teenage boys. Sadly, his sons don’t want to spend time with him. Chris opens up about dealing with the painful lack of connection with his sons, and how he maintains his fatherly presence in their lives.  Chris Sajnog also shares Navy SEAL tactics for parents to help us to learn anything quickly and effectively. He goes over the hard and soft traits we need to cultivate to be balanced men, and how we can apply the warrior mindset to everyday life. In this episode, we do a live Q&A with our members on how to teach kids to protect themselves. Every year, we envision a new future and set goals to become who we really want to be. Why is it that more often than not, we never get very far? If we pay close attention, we can hear a taunting voice, an inner bully who says, “You can’t do that. Who do you think you are? You’re not worthy or deserving. You’re a fake, a fraud, and a loser.” Meet Imposter Syndrome, and we all deal with it. Today we have Dr. Jaime Hope on the show. She’s an Emergency Medicine Physician, Wellness Expert, Teacher, Speaker, and Author. Jaime tells us how to notice when Impostor Syndrome is creeping up and how we can shut that bully down. She gives us tools to build resilience against our own negative voices and create a new vision of ourselves. Jaime also reveals how to deal with times of stress by connecting the pain with our vision and purpose. Today, we’re going to give you marriage tips that you can use to turn your marriage around or make it even better than it already is. Many of us might say we have good marriages, but we don’t hear about a lot of great marriages that are full of happiness, connection, intimacy, and sexual desire. This is probably because most couples wait 6 years to seek help when they feel unhappy in their marriages, and by that time they’re often ready to give up. Today we have Zach Brittle on The Dad Edge. He is a marriage counselor and the co-host of the Marriage Therapy Radio podcast. Zach is going to give us some marriage tips you’ve never heard before. We discuss the DNA of conflict, ingenious ways to navigate arguments, and how to break the same frustrating relational patterns. He also tells us how to create a marriage with absolutely no sexual rejection. All married men (and women) will benefit from the marriage tips in this episode! Money is the number one cause of friction between couples. Out of the 50% of marriages that end in divorce, 70% of them end because of financial issues. This is a staggering number, but money in marriage is not something we are taught to navigate, and we don’t know how to show our kids a good example either. Today we have The Money Couple, Scott and Bethany Palmer on The Dad Edge. They are financial advisors who got tired of seeing their clients’ marriages destroyed because of money. Together they wrote The 5 Money Personalities and The 5 Money Conversations to Have with Your Kids at Every Age and Stage. Scott and Bethany reveal the 5 money personalities, the reasoning behind each one, and how we can learn to work with our spouse’s and our children’s money personalities. They also discuss how harmful it is to argue about money in front of the kids and how to use money language to actually bring your marriage and family closer than ever before. (You'll also get a link at the end of the show to a money personality assessment for you and your whole family. Do finances stress you out? You’re not alone. Most of us aren’t clear about what we have to do to achieve financial independence. The average 50-year-old has about 50K in savings. Most millennials are not saving at all. The majority of family households don’t even have a budget to know what they’re spending on. Money problems wreak havoc on our physical and mental wellbeing as well as our relationships. The best time to take control and be intentional about financial independence is right now. Financial legend, Brad Barrett, returns to The Dad Edge. He’s the cohost of the Choose FI Podcast, the co-author of Choose FI: Your Blueprint to Financial Independence, and cofounder of a financial independence movement that has spread worldwide. Brad went from being a full-time CPA to retired and financially independent at the age of 35. Now he empowers others to design their paths to financial independence. Today, Brad gives us simple, actionable steps you can take right now to cut expenses, save money, and build wealth without feeling deprived. He also talks about how to get your spouse in on the game to use your financial plan to bring you closer. It’s not about what you’ll be giving up, it’s about making your life better. Suicide is the number one killer among men aged 35-50. The World Health Organization reports that suicide represents half of all male violent deaths worldwide. Why are men at such risk and what can we do about it? Men are more likely to go for desperate measures for several reasons. Our culture teaches men to internalize emotions and hide distress. At the same time, men tend to lose their close friends and support systems as they step into the role of a provider. They’re also reluctant to seek help when struggling with anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts. The first step in doing something about suicide among men is raising awareness. Today, one of our Dad Edge Alliance Commanders courageously steps up to share his story. Nick Sotelo recounts his intense battle against rage, darkness, and suicide. He also tells us how to interrupt the negative scripts that run through our heads and what to do when overwhelmed with shame and hopelessness. We never know what is going to send us or someone we care about down a dark road. This is an episode every dad should listen to for himself and any boy or man he knows. As men, we usually are all or nothing. We have the tendency to set extreme goals, and if we have one setback, we take that as proof we can’t succeed and give up entirely. But if we practice both self-compassion and accountability, we can forgive ourselves, dust off, and get back on track. Today, we have one of our Dad Edge Alliance Mastermind Commander on the show, Paul Richardson. He’s in charge of ensuring the men on his team are executing their plans. Paul says we won’t be motivated all the time, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean we can’t stay on the path to success. Instead of beating ourselves up for the bad days, we must learn to trust the process, asking for help along the way. We can grow at our own pace, forgiving ourselves when we have a setback and loving ourselves enough to be patient. Discover the power of self-compassion and accountability for dads in this short episode! 82% of us hate what we do for a living, yet we do it for 40 hours a week or more. Strangely enough, we wear this misery as a badge of honor, as if the more we hate our job, the more noble we are for suffering through it.  But we weren’t put here to hate our lives. How much is staying where you are costing you? Today we talk with Dad Edge Alliance Mastermind commander, Sean Hutchins. He used to hate his job, coming home in a bad mood, not showing up for his wife and daughter, and gaining forty pounds. One day he took an objective look at his situation and realized that the cost of staying miserable was much more than the risk of trying something new. Sean decided to take the leap and design his own life. What's possible for you? The transition from boy to man is an epic time in the lives of our sons. As fathers, it's our job to teach them what it means to be a man as they close the chapter on childhood and embark on the next stage of life as an adult. In recent episodes, I talked about a rite of passage experience I created for my 11-year-old Mason. He hiked with me and the Elite Elevation Dad Edge Mastermind to the top of Mount Quandary in Breckenridge Colorado. I also shared the letter I read to him about The Pillars of Manhood when we reached the summit.  Today, Mason is here to share his perspective of what it was like to take on such a tough physical and mental challenge, how he felt among a tribe of men, and the life lessons that he will carry into manhood.   For the show notes and exclusive links mentioned in this episode go to gooddadproject.com/thursday179. ———— Join the Free Dad Edge Facebook Group at gooddadproject.com/group. For many of us, it’s a challenge just to get through the day. We’re stuck on the hamster wheel, running as fast as we can to nowhere. Not only do we lack clarity around our paths in life, but we also lack situational awareness when it comes to the daily environment around us. The world is not always a safe place, and complacency is deadly. Today we have Mike Glover on the show. Today’s show is all about how to live in the present. We always hear people talking about it, but how exactly is it done? Most of us hold onto shame, guilt, and feelings of unworthiness from yesterday. At the same time, we feel constant anxiety when we think about what tomorrow might bring. This ruins any chance of making today a great day and keeps us in a state of fear that negatively effects our relationships at home and at work. Bryan Falchuk is a life coach, TEDx speaker, and the bestselling author of Do a Day: How to Live a Better Life Every Day. As our kids get into their teens, they tend to isolate and become more independent. Their thoughts and feelings grow more complex. Asking them about their day at school is not enough to get them to open up about what’s going on inside their heads, and they are not going to volunteer information. How can we better connect with our teenagers?  This is a crucial time for our kids, and the quality of our relationships depends on the quality of the questions we ask. If we want our teenagers to feel free to communicate with us, we have to be proactive about getting to know the person they’re becoming. Fight, flight, or freeze. These are humans’ three reactions to danger. What tools do your kids have to defend themselves when they are threatened? As parents, we hope our kids will never be forced into this position, but in order to protect them, we must teach them how to stick up for themselves. Martial arts are a great way to give kids the tools they need to defend themselves. They also teach life skills like discipline, perseverance, and courage. It’s not just about fighting. It’s about empowerment—physical, mental, and emotional. Today we have Dad Edge Alliance member Philipp Lomboy back on the show. He is a martial arts and self-defense expert and the creator of the Everyday Fighter podcast and community. He is also the father of four girls. He has instilled training as part of his daughters' lives and has raised them to know that they have the right to set their own boundaries and demand respect. Listen to the benefits of teaching your kids to defend themselves in this short episode! Having resilient kids is something all parents want. We want our kids to be confident, make smart decisions, and have the ability to triumph over challenges in life. What we often forget is that in order to raise resilient kids, we have to be resilient ourselves. Chris and Holly Santillo joined us for a live Q&A in our Dad Edge Alliance Mastermind. They are the authors of Resilience Parenting: Raising Resilient Children in an Era of Detachment and Dependence. They are also karate instructors with a combined thirty-five years of experience educating children in their dojos and are raising three boys of their own. Chris and Holly answer real questions from everyday dads about kids when it comes to failure, respect, and communication. They also share the Three Pillars of Resilience Parenting that will build a strong mental and emotional foundation for parents as well as their children. Are you leading a rich life? Or are you drifting without intention, just trying to make it through the day? If you think there is more for you than what you have now, this show is for you. Wealth is our topic today. We’re not talking about the usual definition of wealth, but what it means to you. To some people, having a happy, healthy family is wealth. To others, it’s freedom. To many, it’s the sports cars and big houses. But it doesn’t matter what your dream life is if you’re not thinking and acting in a way that gets you results. Today’s guest is Matt Aitchison. He is the creator of The Rich Life Academy and host of the Millionaire Mindcast. "Matty A" is here to talk about breaking free from your default setting by auditing every aspect of your life and reengineering it so that you will exceed beyond the present identity you have for yourself. This show was recorded right after The Dad Edge Live Summit and we’re going to share a quick thought from the event that is so important to our kids. We might not even notice it, but much of the time, when our kid asks us to do something with them, our default answer is “no.” We’re busy. Maybe later. After we get one more thing checked off our endless to-do list. What we don’t think about is how badly our kids just want to hang out and spend time with us. Today we talk about changing our default setting. We always have things going on, but we need to stop and think about what matters most. What would happen if next time your kid asks you to play with them or take them out, that your default answer is “yes?” For the show notes and exclusive links mentioned in this episode go to gooddadproject.com/thursday166. ———— Join the Free Dad Edge Facebook Group at gooddadproject.com/group. Our society is obsessed with early achievement. We want our kids to become incredible athletes, advanced students, and high-earners. We have a tendency to compare them with their peers and if they aren’t at the same level, we worry that they won’t succeed. Our guest is Richard Karlgaard. He’s a journalist, award-winning entrepreneur, and speaker. He is the author of bestselling book, Late Bloomers: The Power of Patience in a World Obsessed with Early Achievement. He talks about how today’s kids are under huge pressure to perform and feel like failures if they don’t meet society’s expectations. This coincides with a 70% rise in depression and anxiety in teenagers in the past 25 years. It’s natural for every parent to wish the best for their child’s future, but Richard Karlgaard explains how kids develop in different ways at different ages. He teaches us how to meet our kids where they are and give them space to grow. He also tells us how allowing them to find their way later in life can be an advantage to long-term achievement and happiness. We’re just beginning to understand the impact of the internet and smartphones on society. Our time and attention are sucked away, and we look at a screen instead of our real lives. Energy for valuable activities is drained from us and we have nothing left for creative thinking. The long-term effects technology has on our kids’ wellbeing and development is even more alarming, leading to mental health issues and addictive behavior. Today we have a fascinating conversation with our previous guest, Cal Newport, the author of Digital Minimalism who answers questions live in our Dad Edge Alliance Mastermind. These are answers every parent needs to hear. Don't miss this episode! Most men are motivated by the same thing, and it’s the wrong thing—fear. We run away from the life we don’t want, struggling to avoid discomfort and scarcity. We are under constant stress and have nothing left for ourselves. But fear is a bad motivator. We can only run so far and so fast before we become depleted and burned out.  Today I have an amazing guest who is no stranger to the spotlight. Tommy Baker is the host of Resist Average Podcast and helps dreamers create the lives they truly desire. He is the author of three bestselling books, and his most recent release, The Leap of Your Life, is about how we can resist average and make bold decisions toward the dreams that scare us. Tommy talks about the myth of clarity, leveraging regret, and taking action despite never feeling ready. If you’re in survival mode or in a comfortable but boring rut, this show will change your trajectory! Communication with your wife has broken down. Resentment grows, walls build up, and you look at your spouse and wonder, what happened to us? Today we have everyday dad and husband, Ryan on the show.
