Every one of us wants to be a more effective leader but there is a huge difference between being a boss/manager and being a leader, and, if you take it even further, a coach. A coach is someone who helps guide another individual to do and be more.Today, I am joined by a great coach, Brett Bartholomew, the author of Conscious Coaching, to talk about what makes a successful coach. We talk about the social skills needed to effectively coach others, the distinction between compliance and commitment, the nuances between influencing others and manipulating them, and ultimately how to coach others well. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Building a personal brand Transactional people Breeding complacency Overcoming perfectionism Managing risk Dealing with anxiety Tools for productivity Getting ahold of your demons Finding the right headspace The outcome of influence Navigating your own darkness Leading with value The three-stage framework   BRETT BARTHOLOMEW As I stated earlier, I am joined by my friend and an absolutely phenomenal coach, Brett Bartholomew. I only met Brett recently but I did watch him present some of the ideas that he’s going to share with you today at SummerStrong earlier in the year and I can tell you that without a doubt, Brett is extremely qualified and competent when it comes to human psychology and performance and how to optimize the body and brain for performance. He is a strength and conditioning coach, consultant, and the founder of the consulting company, The Bridge Human Performance. He’s worked with professional athletes, Olympians, members of Special Forces, Fortune 500 Companies, and so many more. And, I’m honored he’s joining us to share his in-depth knowledge of coaching others well. IRON COUNCIL Obviously, we’re talking about leadership and coaching today on this podcast and, ironically enough, we do a deep dive into this exact subject inside our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, this month. If you want to learn more about what it takes to lead and coach others effectively, consider joining us and tapping into the conversations, resources, tools, and accountability to help you become a more effective leader inside your business, your home, and community. Gents, today I am joined by my friend and repeat guest, Jack Carr. There are just certain people that when you meet them, there seems to be a connection like you’ve been friends for a very long time.I’m honored that Jack is joining me again to talk about the second installment of his thriller series, True Believer. But we talk about a whole lot more than just that. We dive into the pros and cons of social media, falling into comparison with others, learning to be a professional in all your endeavors, the trap of identifying with your occupation, and a whole lot more. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Building a readership Defending the tribe The art of storytelling Finding your next mission in life Taking guys down-range Making micro adjustments Being professional The hero’s journey Overcoming adversity Trusting your instincts The importance of mentorship Resonating with revenge Weaving in authenticity JACK CARR As I mentioned earlier, my friend, Jack Carr is back for round two on the podcast. If you don’t know who Jack is, he spent 20 years in Navy Special Warfare as an enlisted SEAL sniper to a troop and eventually a unit commander with multiple combat deployments.Upon retiring from the Navy, Jack went on to establish a very successful writing career (something he always knew he wanted to do after service). In fact, his books are two of the very few fictional books I’ve ever read and I was not able to put them down.He draws upon his lessons from the military and his extensive training and research to create powerful stories that every man will enjoy reading. I hope you enjoy listening in on our conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.LEGACY I’ve got to bring your attention to something I haven’t talked about for a little while and that is our ORDER OF MAN LEGACY EXPERIENCE.We’ve just released the dates and registration for our next father/son experience which will talk place in Central Maine on June 11th-14th 2020. What causes one man to jump on a grenade to save a fellow Marine when most of us would run the other way? That’s exactly what my guest today, Kyle Carpenter, did when attacked by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2010. Through his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor as the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient. Today, Kyle and I talk about the days leading up to his heroic action, what exactly happened, his injuries sustained, his road to recovery, and his evolution as a human being since. We also cover his new book, You Are Worth It: Building a Life Worth Fighting For. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Living life one day at a time Joining the Marines  Always looking for a challenge Searching for the right path Preparing for the unknown Valuing those around you Learning from others Life after boot camp  Helping the oppressed  Getting mission-ready Surrounded by Taliban  Accepting your fate  A level of detachment  Another day in Afganistan Going through rehabilitation  A life well lived Living a bonus round KYLE CARPENTER Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend and the youngest ever living Medal of Honor recipient, Kyle Carpenter. Kyle joined the Marine Corps at 19 and not long after was deployed with the 1st Marine Division to Afghanistan where he threw himself on a grenade to save a fellow Marine. This man is one of the most humble people that I know and I’m inspired by his experience, his life, and who is he as a human being. Before we get into the conversation, I’m going to read you his Medal of Honor Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 21 November 2010. Lance Corporal Carpenter was a member of a platoon-sized coalition force, comprised of two reinforced Marine rifle squads partnered with an Afghan National Army squad. The platoon had established Patrol Base Dakota two days earlier in a small village in the Marjah District in order to disrupt enemy activity and provide security for the local Afghan population. Lance Corporal Carpenter and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position on the perimeter of Patrol Base Dakota when the enemy initiated a daylight attack with hand grenades, one of which landed inside their sandbagged position. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. We live in a climate where we are inundated with messages, opportunities, and entertainment. We’ve demanded and created a culture where we are never bored, never quiet, and never satisfied. But what if that noise was one of the largest barriers to satisfaction and fulfillment in our lives? Today, I am joined by repeat guest, Ryan Holiday, to talk about his new book, Stillness is the Key. We cover why stillness is the key to mastery, freedom, happiness, and tranquility. We also do a deeper dive into the power of saying, “no,” how to conquer anger, finding confidence but avoiding ego, and how stillness truly is the key. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS A better way of living It’s all about the present  Needing stillness in your life The pre-occupied mind Getting into the zone Taking control of your environment  How to model stillness Misery in complete freedom Learning to say no Applying filters to life   Choosing meaningfulness Making conscience decisions Giving up destructive control Focusing on the controllable  How to conquer anger  RYAN HOLIDAY My guest today is Ryan Holiday. You’ve heard him on this podcast before and many of you likely already know who he is and have read his books, Ego is the Enemy, The Obstacle is the Way, and The Daily Stoic. He is someone I consider to be a great thinker and many of his ideas and works have helped me find the philosophy of Stoicism and discover more satisfaction and fulfillment in my life.I’m honored to have Ryan back on the podcast to talk about the concept of stillness. This is one area I really struggle with so reading his new book and, of course, having this conversation proved to be transformative for me. I know it will be for you too. I haven’t always been as appreciative of the wild, nature, and wildlife as I am now. With me getting involved in hunting over the past several years, I’ve been more intimately connected to the outdoors than I ever have. So, when Coyote Peterson’s team reached out, I knew it would make for an interesting discussion (And, if you have children, they’re really going to like this one). Today, we talk about nature, encouraging youth to get involved in the wild, the unintended consequences of excessive human interaction with nature, where Coyote and I disagree on hunting, and, ultimately, some of his craziest animal encounters. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Introducing animals to the digital space A lasting legacy  Learning about the world Differentiating yourself  Interacting with nature  Hunting for survival Conservation efforts Being in-tune with animals  Creating your own experiences  Encouraging kids to read The Sting Pain Index Inspiring future generations  COYOTE PETERSON Nathaniel “Coyote” Peterson is a wildlife educator and the host of the Brave Wilderness YouTube channel with nearly 15,000,000 subscribers. I was first introduced to Coyote by my two oldest sons while they were on YouTube and asked me to come watch this “crazy guy who intentionally gets stung and bit by animals.” He’s also the author of 4 books, the host of a new Animal Planet television show set to be aired early next year, and the recipient of an Emmy for one of his series’ called, Breaking Trail. This one is a little different than you might be used to on the Order of Man podcast but if you’re interested in hearing our intelligent disagreement/discussion about hunting and, if you have children, you’re definitely going to want to tune in.I hope you enjoy my podcast with the fascinating and interesting Coyote Peterson. As many of you know, I’ve immersed myself in training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu over the past 3-4 months and, although, I’m only getting started on this path, I can see how beneficial and valuable it is to train in martial arts. Today, I have the honor of talking with André Almeida (he simply goes by “Dedeco”), a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Blackbelt who has been practicing for over 30 years. We talk about his rocky past in Brazil, how Jiu-Jitsu saved his life, what to look for when getting started on your own path, and the mindset needed to be a successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Watching from the sideline Experiencing variances in life Learning opportunities  Growing up in Rio de Janeiro Building self-confidence  First-class mentorship  Relocating to America  How to get involved in Jiu-jitsu Helping others grow The importance of lineage Basic starting points for beginners Learning through vulnerability  The power of a small arsenal  Developing your style ANDRE “DEDECO” ALMEIDA Today, I have the honor of introducing you to my friend, Dedeco. Dedeco and I met last year at Origin’s Immersion Camp and since then, he’s become a friend and a bit of a mentor (although mostly online via social media). And, with as many questions as I’ve received about me starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I can’t think of anyone better to talk with that him. Dedeco has been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for more than 30 years and credits his life to being introduced to the art. He’s a Brazilian National Champion, 3x State Champion, and 2x Pan American medalist. On top of that, he’s one of the most sincere and genuine people that I know and I can’t wait for you to hear our conversation. I hope you enjoy, gentlemen.IRON COUNCIL Most of you know about the Iron Council by now. It’s our exclusive brotherhood designed to give you the tools, resources, and accountability you need to thrive and accomplish your biggest objectives. This month, we’re talking about being prepared for emergencies and potentially catastrophic events. But more than talking about these things, we’re actively working towards making ourselves more capable husbands, fathers, business owners, and community leaders. That’s why we issue challenges and assignments as tools to bridge the gap between what we know we should be doing and what we’re actually doing. If you want to band with us and take the leap from knowledge to action and accomplish more in the next 3 months than you potentially have all year, head to www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil. Quitting has become all too common and all too popular. While I can certainly agree that there may be a point in time where it may be the right course of action, too many men throw in the towel too soon and limit themselves to minimal results in the process. Learning to stick with projects, tasks, and relationships longer than you may normally do opens up all sorts of opportunities reserved for those who show the most perseverance and grit. Today, I have the opportunity to sit down with former Navy SEAL, JP Dinnell, to talk about his “Never Quit” attitude, where he developed this mentality, qualifiers for staying and quitting, and ultimately how you too can develop the same “Never Quit” mentality. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS A lack of accountability Simulating detachment  Learning how to win Leading from high ground  Improving through self-awareness  Taking ownership isn’t enough Having hard conversations  Asking permission to lead  Detach and assess  Loyalty to the core  America’s Mighty Warriors Random acts of kindness  Emotion and empathy  JP DINNELL Gents, today I sit down with repeat guest, JP Dinnell. He is a former Navy SEAL and served with Task Unit Bruiser with Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. Under their command, he served as an elite SEAL sniper in one of the deadliest regions of Iraq in 2006. In fact, his counterpart was Navy SEAL, Chris Kyle.He also served as a training instructor at Naval Special Warfare Group where he developed special operations urban combat and close-quarter training to better prepare SEAL units for the battlefield.JP has become a friend, a mentor, and someone I’m motivated and inspired by daily.IRON COUNCIL Gents, I know we’re knee-deep in a great conversation but let me hit the pause button to tell you about a resource you’re really going to want to know about if you’re ready to take your life to the next level. I don’t care in what capacity you’re showing up in life – you are a leader. And, whether you realize it or not, you are having an influence on those around you. Whether you’re trying to secure a job promotion, lead your team and co-workers to success, manage a home, or get their kids to do their chores, your ability to learn and implement the strategies Jocko and I share today are critical.Jocko Willink (a man who needs no introduction) and I sit down face to face to discuss what it means to be a leader, considerations when raising kids right, striking the balance between opposing leadership methods (dichotomies), and very specific leadership strategies and tactics. And, if all that isn’t enough, we talk a little bit about archery and beards. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Origin Emersion Camp Mental fortitude  Mechanical drills The evolution of Echelon Front Writing a best seller Leadership for kids  A first-class archery experience  A roll of the dice The best of the best  Feeling like an imposter  Overcoming weakness  Detaching from a bad plan How to handle ultimatums  Correcting bad behavior  The reality of leadership JOCKO WILLINK My guest today is a man who has now been on the podcast on four separate occasions and someone who does not, for most of you listening, need an introduction. His name is Jocko Willink and he served as the Navy SEAL Commander for the most highly-decorated special forces unit of the Iraq war. And, since leaving the military has gone on to lead on of the most recognizable and effective leadership companies in the world with his brother-in-arms, Leif Babin, Echelon Front. On top of all of that, he’s written 8 books with his most recent being Leadership Strategy and tactics Field Manual (which we’ll be discussing today). His other books include Extreme Ownership, Dichotomy of Leadership, and the Way of the Warrior Kid series, among others.I’m honored to call this man a friend and am proud to be able to share our conversation with you today. IRON COUNCIL Obviously, we’ve been talking all about leadership today on the podcast. I want to offer you an additional resource if you’re looking to up your leadership effectiveness. It’s called the Iron Council and it’s a brotherhood of men working together to achieve maximum results in our lives. And, a lot of what we discuss is centered around the third pillar of masculinity, Preside, which is synonymous with leadership. Most of the institutions that have served men and offered a place for them to band together have been on the decline and while all of that is going away, the Order of Man and the Iron Council is rising up instead. We’re dedicated to giving you the tools, resources, brotherhood, camaraderie, and accountability to step fully into that man you have a desire to become. If you want to learn more and band with us, head to www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil. Too many men are reliant on others to save them when it all hits the fan. And, while there may be someone there to rescue you in your greatest time of need, it’s critical that we all learn to take care of and protect ourselves. That’s why I wanted to have Pat McNamara join me on the podcast. As a 22-year military veteran and someone who has dedicated his life to making himself more capable in the most dire times, he is uniquely qualified to talk about situational awareness, staying on the alert, being prepared but not paranoid, and making yourself a sentinel SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Using the internet as a tool Being moral and ethical  The benefits of curiosity  Being the protector The 45-degree syndrome Sunday Sentinel Sermon  Do your 5’s and 25’s  Utilizing your primal instincts   Leveraging body behavior  Preparing your spouse to be a sentinel Making incremental changes in life  PAT MCNAMARA My guest today is a man who needs no introduction. His name is Pat McNamara and he is one of the baddest men on the planet. As I mentioned earlier, he is a 22-year military veteran and has served in a myriad of special operations units. Through his military service, he began to develop his own training methodology combining safety, continuous critical thinking, and effectiveness. In addition to that, he is an author of Tactical Application and Practical Shooting and Sentinel. Today, he joins me to talk about making yourself a more capable protector. MAINE EVENT Gentlemen, we had such a huge success with the inaugural Order of Man Maine Event that we decided to get you the dates as soon as possible for the next one. Fatherhood is one of the noblest, exciting, and rewarding callings a man can step into. It’s also one of the absolute hardest. Unfortunately, there is no manual for becoming a great father, like you have a desire to be. Most of it is trial and error. But that doesn’t mean we can’t learn extremely effective tactics and strategies from men on the same path. My guest today is Alec Lace. Getting Strong is undoubtedly something the overwhelming majority of men want to do. But with so much information out there and with our days stacked to the brim, it’s hard to know what to do and how to find the time to do it.Today, I am joined by my friend and long-time strong man to talk about strength of the body and of the mind, both inside and outside the gym. We talk about forging mental resilience, having the right attitude to attack life, how and why we need to teach our children toughness, and how to forge your way to underground strength. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Growing up working as a kid Getting punched in the face A lack of hardship How to fall in love with hard work Going beyond the 9 to 5 Creating your new normal Building momentum Taking pride in your abilities Finding the right headspace Blending the mind and body Becoming less attached Doing more with less ZACH EVEN-ESHGents, I can’t tell you how excited I am to share my conversation with Zach Even-Esh.I was fortunate enough to have him at our home and spend some time training physically and showing him around Maine. If you don’t already know, Zach, he is a long-time strong man, a strength and conditioning coach, and the founder of The Underground Strength Gym. He has a passion for simplifying strength and conditioning and mentoring and preparing youth for life through the gym. We talk about a lot today and I think you’re going to enjoy this conversation as we get much deeper than simply getting strong.IRON COUNCIL Gentlemen, if you’re not already familiar, let me introduce you to the Iron Council. Each of us is faced with thousands of decisions on a daily basis. You’re ability to make the right decisions spell the difference between failure and success for you, your family, your clients, your business, and your community. Unfortunately, with all the variables to take into consideration, it’s hard to know which decisions are best. That’s why I’m looking forward to getting this conversation to you today. My guest is David Meltzer and he is the CEO of one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment marketing agencies. Today, we go to the root of making choices, why assumptions kill success, the power of harnessing fear, and how to improve your game-time decision making. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Rags to riches How critical decisions are made Fear-based consciousness   Ego-based consciousness   Making assumptions The pragmatic truth Having an attitude of faith Disciplining the sub-conscience  Doing things consistently  Choosing to be happy Living in the truth Shifting your energy  Accessing what you want How to substitute fear Coming from a place of love Truth consciousness Improving your vibration   DAVID MELTZER As I mentioned earlier, my guest is David Meltzer and he is the CEO of Sports 1 Marketing, a top 10 keynote speaker, an award-winning humanitarian, and a best-selling author. He has over 25 years of experience in the legal, technology, sports, and entertainment fields, and needless to say, is an expert in high-stakes, high-pressure decision-making situations. He is business partners with Hall of Fame Quarterback, Warren Moon, and inspired movies such as Jerry Maquire, Any Given Sunday, and For Love of the Game. And, as you’ll hear in our conversation today, he is an extremely deep thinker and I know you’ll enjoy how deep we go in this podcast on how to position yourself to make better choices and decisions. IRON COUNCIL With all that we’ve had going on over the past couple of months with the move and our upcoming event this weekend, you haven’t heard me talk about our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council for a bit.It seems to me most men have lost their ability to band with other like-minded men who are going to push, motivate, and inspire them to do and be more in their lives. And, that’s exactly what we’re all about inside the Iron Council. When you band with us, you’re going to get a monthly assignment (this month is hyper-focused on physical fitness), weekly challenges to push you along the way, access to the Foundry (our communication platform), and the camaraderie and accountability that comes when you band with other high-achieving men. Today, I sit down with a fascinating man. His name is Mat Best and many of you know from his viral videos for Black Rifle Coffee Company. But what you may not know is how he views his military service as an Army Ranger with five combat tours. During our conversation, we talked about how he views his service, his continual support of military veterans, how he founded his mission after the military, where he stumbled along the way, and how he helped turn a simple coffee company into a household name. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS  Mission-oriented  Defining yourself Acts of heroism  Defusing threats  Controlled violence  How to out-grit people  Being uncomfortable  Developing core-competencies  Mission first Manageable disagreements  Creating a community  The land of opportunity  The need for meaningful conflict  Owning responsibility    MAT BEST As I stated earlier, my guest today is someone most of you are probably familiar with. His name is Mat Best and he is a former Army Ranger and the co-founder of Black Rifle Coffee company along with several other companies he founded since leaving the military. He and I had the opportunity to sit down at Total Archery Challenge a couple of weeks ago in Park City to talk about his military service, how to lead an incredible organization in Black Rifle Coffee Company, and his new book, Thank You For My Service. Gents, I think you’re going to enjoy this one as you might see a side of Mat you haven’t seen before. It comes as no surprise that most men have a desire to stand out from the pack as a man of credibility and authority. I call it influence and, the more of it you have with others, the more effective and successful you will be in your life. Today, I am joined by my friend, Bert Sorin, to talk about how to stand out as the man. He’s a man I’ve respected immensely since I met him a little over a year ago and someone who stands out as the type of man I’m referring. We get into the “x-factor,” adding value in all of your interactions, matching your actions with your words, and how to stand out as a man among men. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Defining the X-Factor Finding relevance Adding value to your tribe Developing social skills Having the right motives Protecting your “magic”  Letting go of expectations  Watching the tide come in Scaling forward  Your value proposition  Dissociating from your activities  Building your fortress Playing to win  BERT SORIN Gents, today I am joined by repeat guest and friend, Bert Sorin.Bert is the President and CEO of Sorinex. I know you’ve been hearing me talk about them for some time now since I was introduced to him and Sorinex about this time last year.Bert is a former Division 1 Track and Field All-American and an Olympics Trial athlete. And, what he learned in sports, he has now translated to running this incredible leader in strength and exercise equipment. And, it’s not only about their equipment. I had the privilege of attending their annual event, SummerStrong, and I can tell you that the culture they’ve created within the organization and movement is a sight to behold. And, because of that, I thought Bert and I needed to sit down for round 2 to talk about standing out. Enjoy. MAINE EVENT One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is something along the lines of “How do I get my life back on track?” I wish there was an easy answer. There isn’t. But, there is a simple one. It’s called the Battle Plan and it’s a system I’ve been developing over 10 years to take control of my health, relationships, bank account, this movement, and my life in general. If you’ve been listening to the podcast over the past month, you’ve heard me talk about the Order of Man Maine event (held August 10th-11th). Among the like-minded men you’ll meet, the challenges we’ll participate in, and the activities we have planned, you’ll be working on your own Battle Plan to accomplish more in the next 90 days than you potentially have all year. All of us are dealt a hand, some harder than others. But as my guest today can attest, it’s not the hand we’re dealt that matters, it’s how we play it.Today’s conversation is with Nick Santonastasso (who many of you are already probably aware of). He is a bodybuilder, entrepreneur, adventurer, and highly-sought-after public speaker. And, he was born with a debilitating medical condition which left him legless and missing one arm. Today, we talk about overcoming the victim mentality, how to develop confidence, how to view difficult circumstances as a gift, and how to defeat the odds. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Being a man of action Giving without expectations  Putting your ego to the side Using the right vocabulary  Reframing a victim mentality  Filtering out the wrong people How to build confidence  Defining your own success Becoming the CEO of your life How to overcome limiting beliefs Facing objective reality  Progress within yourself  Surrendering your ego Reflecting on your wins Appreciating pain Growing through curiosity  NICK SANTONASTASSO As I mentioned earlier, my guest today is Nick Santonastasso. He has got to be one of the most inspiring people that I know and, if you’re familiar with him, I think you would likely agree. He was born with a rare medical condition (he’s only one of 12 people born with it and 8 of them are dead). It’s called Hanhart Syndrom and it kept him from developing his legs and one of his arms. But none of that has stopped him. In fact, if anything, it’s propelled him forward as he’s taken what would both literally and figuratively cripple most and turned it into something extremely empowering for him and the millions he inspires. He’s tried it all from bowling to wrestling to bodybuilding and now, he’s speaking up as one of the most sought-after public speakers in the world. And, once you listen to this podcast, I think you’ll know why.ORDER OF MAN MAINE EVENT One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is something along the lines of “How do I get my life back on track?” I wish there was an easy answer. It seems to me the more that I have conversations on this podcast, the more questions I have rather than the answers I’ve been seeking. But it’s been said that the quality of your life will be determined by the quality of the questions you ask. So, when I have an opportunity to sit down with my friend, Andy Stumpf, to ask some of life’s challenging questions, it’s always a great discussion.Today, we talk about so many different topics like taking risks (which we’ve both done with moving our families), developing resilience in our lives, and the never-ending challenges that come with raising kids. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Managing uncertainty  Seeking adventure  Navigating risk Mental toughness Guiding your children   Voluntary hardships  Parental balance Toxic masculinity  Calibration   Frank conversation  Consequences of bad decisions  Corporate endorsements  The power of social media  Politics  Doing more with less  ANDY STUMPF My guest today is my friend, Andy Stumpf. I heard he was making a trip to Maine about a week after I got here so I reached out and scheduled a conversation on this podcast. We had a day of archery, Jiu-Jitsu, a podcast session, and finished it off with a lobster bake with our friends, Pete Roberts, and Brian Littlefield. If you don’t know who Andy Stumpf is, he is a retired Navy SEAL, avid bow hunter, and a base jumping, wingsuit flying mad man. But, in addition to that, he’s one of the most level-headed men that I know. I think a lot of that has been developed to even out his quest for adventure. You’re going to enjoy this one as it’s not so much of an interview but two men talking about the challenges and struggles that are part of life. MAINE EVENTI’m sure you’ve heard by now that we’ve got our Order of Man Maine event taking place on August 10-11, 2019, with an exclusive Iron Council dinner on the 9th.Our entire goal for the event is to teach you the framework for success in your health, wealth, relationships, and life and, of course, introduce you to a network of men who are all achieving big things in their lives. We’ve been making plans for the event on my property and to say that I’m extremely excited about what we’re putting together is a huge understatement. Someone in your life has likely wronged you in some way. Whether or not you’ve learned to forgive that individual is another question. I think we all know that learning to forgive others is a liberating practice, but that’s easier said than done. Today, I am joined by Andrew O’Brien to talk about his quest for forgiveness. I don’t want to ruin the conversation for you, but his mother made national news when she killed Andrew’s stepfather, asked him to cover it up, and attempted to pin it on his brother. We cover why forgiveness is crucial for men, how to take the first steps, elements to include on the “forgiveness journey,” and finally finding a way to forgive. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Walking to freedom Emotional trauma Anger and resentment Childhood memories A newfound appreciation Estranged brothers Holding on to animosity The ultimate objective Always pleasing others Finding happiness in the wrong places Public criticism Emotional abuse Bigger ambitions Growing up as a victim Re-engineering forgiveness ANDREW O’BRIEN Today I am joined by my friend, Andrew O’Brien. Andrew and I have been friends for a couple of years, but he recently told me about a journey to forgive that he has decided to take (In fact, he begins his official journey tomorrow as of the release of this podcast). Also, as he shared part of his story with me, I couldn’t help but think how powerful this would be for the men of the Order. I know forgiveness is an issue that many men in the Facebook Group and the Iron Council bring up. You don’t need to take notes or anything on this conversation, but please listen to Andrew’s incredible story about his mother and his path to forgiving her. I hope his discussion helps you in some way. MAINE EVENT Gents, I’m finally able to give you all the details you need to get up here for a meetup/event/experience on our new property in Maine. Whether he knows it or not, every man lives by a code. But without intentionality about what that code is, it’s easy to get lost in a world filled with chaos, clutter, and distraction. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to identify the code you want to live by and consistently measure up to it. That’s why I wanted to have a conversation with my guest today, Brady “Totanka” Cervantes. He is a former Marine Corps sniper and, more recently a professional bull rider. Today, we talk about his experience as a sniper, how it translates to civilian life, the struggles of transitioning in life, how to clear your head in chaos, and how to establish and live by a code. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Learning perspective as a young boy Finding middle ground Seeking guidance from the right source The importance of parental guidance Living out of a truck Life in the Marine Corp. The impact of TBI Understanding the consequences Pushing past fear The mental game Becoming legendary A level of discipline One thing at a time Overcoming ego Dealing with your own battle BRADY “TOTANKA” CERVANTES My guest today is Brady “Totanka” Cervantes. He spent nearly 10 years in the Marine Corps and, as a Scout Sniper, had several deployments throughout the world, including two deployments to Iraq and two deployments to Afghanistan. After his military service, he began training as a lead instructor for several tactical training companies, starred in a survival TV show called Kicking & Screaming, and, more recently, riding bulls professionally with the PBR. I met Brady several months ago at Sorinex’s SummerStrong event and as I got to know him over a couple of days, I was extremely impressed with his clarity, confidence, and level of humility. All of which we talk about in our conversation. IRON COUNCIL If you’ve been listening to this podcast for any amount of time, you know a little bit about our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council. This is a fraternity of men who are all working together to improve their lives, gain new perspectives, get accountability, and the motivation and tools they need to excel. This month inside the Iron Council we’re talking about forging and iron-clad mindset, and one of the things we do is bring in guest experts to cover the monthly topic, do some live Q & A with, and learn. Today’s discussion is with Pete Roberts & Brian Littlefield from Origin Main. These are two men that I highly admire and respect. We talk about thinking big, how too many men seem to be playing it safe, and so much more. Hit me up on Instagram at @ryanmichler and let me know what you thought about the conversation. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Moving stone walls Life’s defining moments Decades of opportunity Taking risks Living without stuff Making a sacrifice Washing off the comfort When is it “big enough” Building emotional equity Earned confidence IRON COUNCIL It’s been said that the only thing constant is change. And, if you’re anything like me, change is not easy for you. Even if we know it will be good for us, it seems to me that most men resist change. But if it’s inevitable and, in a lot of ways, constructive, we need to understand how to deal with it and actually embrace change. That’s why inside of our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, we’re talking all about change and how to harness it for a force of good in our lives and in those we have a responsibility for. We’re going to to be breaking it down weekly with understanding the nature of our relationship with change, how to take action when we are faced with an evolving set of circumstances, and how to effectively lead the people we care about through change. If you’re ready to learn how to embrace change in your life, have some powerful discussion about it, and be challenged to take deliberate and intentional action toward growing and evolving, I invite you to band with us inside the Iron Council. This week, I’m back with my favorite guest, my wife, Tricia. We’re fielding questions about our move to Maine, settling in, raising kids, leading a family, working through disagreements, and a whole lot more. You may want to have your wife listen in on this one too as we’re talking about things that will apply to both of you. Hit me up on Instagram at @ryanmichler and let me know what you thought about the conversation. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Arriving in Maine Family meetings Getting your wife onboard Adjusting to change There’s no magic formula Yes, it snows Travel conditions Leadership in the home Pet peeves Road bumps along the way Saying goodbye Managing stress Effective communication Life as a single mom A willingness to forgive The journey vs. destination Preparing to settle in  IRON COUNCIL One of the biggest challenges men face on their journey to improve themselves is having to go at it alone. It can be done but there is something powerful to be found in banding together with other men. And, that’s where a brotherhood of like-minded men comes into play. We call it the Iron Council and through helping thousands of men like you tap into this powerful network, we’ve seen men salvage devastated marriages, reconnect with their children in powerful ways, lose weight, gain confidence, develop clarity, and generally make themselves into stronger, tougher, better, more capable men. We do this through our framework of communication and a proven system that is designed to push and test men in ways they may never have. I talk with a lot of men who don’t think they can make a difference. Yes, they have big aspirations for themselves and others, but they feel like the odds are stacked against them in achieving their goals. The reality is that just isn’t the case. And, today, I am joined by my good friend, Anthony Waite, to show you what is possible when one man puts his heart, mind, and hands into the work required to lifting others up. We talk about managing expectations, finding congruency with work and home life, avoiding burnout, and how one man can make a difference. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS A band of brothers Returning from deployment Managing expectations as a leader The importance of a father figure Cutting ties Finding truth in your current reality Self-reflection Physical and mental challenges The power in forgiveness Accepting responsibility Answering the question “why me?” How to be a R.E.A.L. success Saying yes to opportunity Taking one step at a time ANTHONY WAITE Gents, today I am joined by my good friend and someone who has been with us inside the Iron Council for the last three years. He is an officer in the Navy and, as you’ll hear in our conversation, a man who is extremely impactful not only in his career but in his community as well. I’ve been so impressed with this man’s growth over the past several years and as much as he’s learned from and been inspired by the Order of Man mission, I’ve been inspired and uplifted by him. This is the caliber of men we have in the Iron Council. I’m honored to be able to introduce him to you. IRON COUNCIL Needless to say, based on this conversation today, the Iron Council is a powerful tool and resource in the lives of Anthony and hundreds more. These are the types of men you can expect to find inside our exclusive brotherhood – men who don’t necessarily have everything figured out but men who are on the path to improving themselves in every capacity. And, as powerful as a transformation story as Anthony’s is, there are hundreds of other stories of self-improvement from men who are harnessing the power of a band of brothers inside the Iron Council. If you’re interested in hearing their stories and unlocking all the tools and resources we share, join us at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil. All of us are building a brand at any given point regardless of if we’re intentional about it or not. Whether you’re trying to convince your kids to do their chores, get that lady to go on a date with you, secure a promotion with your boss, or solicit clients to do business with you, your credibility and influence spell the difference between success and failure. Today I am joined by a man uniquely qualified to discuss this topic as he’s been a major player in Monster’s branding and marketing and eventually working closely with the UFC to sponsor fighters. His name is Hans Molenkamp and in this conversation, we talk about what it means to be influential, how to develop powerful relationships, the power of exploring many different areas of interest, and, ultimately, how to become a brand builder.  SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Representing combat sports and athletic teams A marketing gun for hire Monster Energy Drink Transitioning from action sports to MMA Triumph United becomes a global brand What it takes to build a brand Helping others develop their plan The importance of networking Creating synergy Developing content that works Identifying stardom Walking the line of friendship and business Positive mental attitude Overcoming monotony HANS MOLENKAMP Gents, today I am joined by a fascinating individual. His name is Hans Molenkamp and he’s a bit of a modern renaissance man in that he explores so many unique interest and activities from photography to skateboarding to surfing to marketing to mixed martial arts. He’s arguably one of the most influential people connected with the UFC and, if you follow his Instagram page, you’ll see he’s connected with guys like Rampage, Conor McGregor, and just about everyone in between. He initially got his start in marketing and branding in the mid-’90s with Osiris shoes then on to a key component of Monster’s marketing and branding division and eventually becoming a liaison of sorts between Monster, professional fighters, and the UFC. And, today, he’s here to share his story from humble beginnings to go on to work with some of the most elite athletes in the world. IRON COUNCIL As I was flying home from Sorinex’s SummerStrong event, the plane started to bob up and down. As we dealt with the turbulence, I could feel the pilot making corrections in altitude and direction to navigate us out of the clouds. And, as he did, I couldn’t help but think of his team on the ground directing him to safer, smoother paths. I share that with you because everywhere you look, you can see the value in having a powerful team to direct you throughout the course of your life. Yeah, you could go at it alone but why deal with all the turbulence of life if there is someone there to support you, back you up, and light the better path? That’s the power of the Iron Council, our exclusive brotherhood of men working together to chart their own paths and learn how to navigate the pressure and turbulence this life has to offer. Everyone knows the adage, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” And, as overly-simplistic as it may be, there is a lot of truth to that for a lot of different reasons.Today, I am joined by Ken Coleman, author of the Proximity Principle to talk about how true that statement is and to break it down for us even further We talk about finding the right people and being in the right places, overcoming the limiting beliefs fueled by pride and fear, building an expansive web of the right connections, and how to utilize the “Proximity Principle” to get ahead. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Our intrinsic need to provide Passion versus provision The emotional journey Bone-crushing doubt Weathering the storms of life The Discovery Process Applying the Proximity Effect Stepping into objectivity Silencing fear Finding the right people The value of humility The first bold step KEN COLEMAN Now, I’ll admit, I hadn’t been familiar with his work until Ramsey Solutions reached out to me about his new book, Proximity Principle, but after doing some research and learning more about him, I truly understand how well this guy knows his stuff and how powerful a resource he can be for any man who is trying to get ahead in his career and build something meaningful and significant in his life. Ken is an author, a career expert, and a member of Ramsey Solutions where he frequently co-hosts the Dave Ramsey Show. I really enjoyed this conversation and I have no doubt you will too. And, more importantly, I know you’ll get a ton out of it.   IRON COUNCIL Gents, let me talk with you about the “Wild Man” for a minute. The Wild Man is the man inside that we’ve either silenced or allowed society to silence for far too long. And, it’s the part of us that we need to learn to let out of the cage more often. He is our competitive, aggressive, dominant, and wild nature and, in the right circumstances and context can be used as a powerful force for growth and expansion in our lives. But, most of us have allowed ourselves to be domesticated for too long and have shut down the very elements that give us a competitive advantage. That’s why we’re talking about the Wild Man inside our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council this month. We’re discovering how to acknowledge, explore, and unlock him within ourselves and tap back into the masculine roots we’ve bound and chained at the systematic conditioning of society. And, on top of the discussions, we’re challenging ourselves (500 men) to push harder and further than we have for years with the goal of accomplishing huge things in our lives. I think it’s safe to assume all of us have ambitions for the future. You wouldn’t be listening to this podcast if that wasn’t the case. Unfortunately, we have a tendency of getting in our own way and sabotaging ourselves in the pursuit of those ambitions. Today, I am joined by New York Times Bestselling Author and repeat guest, Gary John Bishop, to talk about how hardwired into us the self-sabotage really is, what the three greatest saboteurs are, how to balance certainty and aspirations, the myth of truth, and how to finally end self-sabotage. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The misconception of “truth” Living life with intent Personal expansion Awareness versus knowledge Making a real change in your life How to become more aware Finding new paradigms in life Stepping back into self-sabotage Focusing on the right things Being a victim of life The chaotic world Lack of fulfillment Wanting certainty but desiring new Questioning everything you know Going beyond your own constraints GARY JOHN BISHOP Today, I am joined by New York Times Best Selling Author, Gary John Bishop for our second discussion regarding his second book, Stop Doing That Sh*t. Gary is a personal development expert and has received a lot of attention over the past several years for his unique approach to self-help and his ability to cut to the heart of matters without a lot of B.S. His first book, UnFu*k Yourself, has sold nearly 1,000,000 copies and is a testament to the fact that people are tired of the motivational, rah-rah, self-help space that has left people informed but not any further down the path to their objectives. Sit back, take notes, and enjoy this powerful conversation with Gary John Bishop. IRON COUNCIL Along the lines of self-help, I think many of us have seen where it falls short and how so many men who have a desire to improve themselves never really do.That’s why, when I founded the Order of Man, it was always my intention to bridge the gap between what we know and what we do. And, that is where our exclusive brotherhood of men comes into play. It’s really not enough to know you want to improve and then go at it alone. You need two things: a framework and a network. A framework to tap into a proven strategy that will help you become an optimized man and a network of men who are on the same path (and further down it) to assist along the way. You’ll find both inside the Iron Council and learn how valuable a framework and network can really be. To learn more, head to www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil. Although the likelihood of us facing a life and death survival situation or natural disaster is lower than it has ever been, there is value in learning how to deal with these potentially devastating life events. He’s an MMA fighter, a survivalist, and a man who knows a ton about how to keep himself alive in some of the most challenging and dangerous encounters we may face. He’s also been instrumental in the experiences we run with men and their boys and has personally helped me become more equipped to deal with some of life’s uncertainties. Regardless of your station in life, I think it’s safe to assume that every single one of us has a desire to transform our lives in some way. There is a myriad of reasons why a lot of people aren’t able to make that transformation happen: lack of motivation, discipline, drive, etc. Today, I am joined by former Navy SEAL, Remi Adeleke to talk about how he went from a son of a wealthy and powerful man in Nigeria to growing up on the streets of the Bronx, to becoming a Navy Seal, and eventually a Hollywood actor and screenwriter, and ultimately, how he transformed his life. Show Highlights Writing a book to inspire Treating people appropriately Turning anger into positivity Doing the hard work Overcoming mental deficiencies Succeeding at all cost Appreciating fear The importance of your mind Searching out father figures The progression of a criminal life Transitioning into the military Never giving up on people Surviving Hell Week Completing BUD/S Stepping into fatherhood Life after the Seals REMI ADELEKE I had the opportunity to sit down with an incredible man last week. His name is Remi Adeleke. You may know of him as a former Navy SEAL and Hollywood actor but what you might not know is how this man was born to a chief of an African tribe in Nigeria, lost his father at age 5, ended up moving to the states with his mother, brother, and not a penny to their name, starting selling drugs and running scams to make some money, getting into the Navy under some questionable circumstances, and eventually becoming a Navy SEAL and Hollywood actor. Guys, you are going to be absolutely blown away with this human and his inspiring story. So, sit back, take some notes if you want, and be inspired to make more of your circumstances and transform your life. IRON COUNCIL When I say the term, “Wild Man,” I think we all have some ideas of what that individual may look like and how he might behave.  Most of us, as men, have been conditioned to silence the “Wild Man” within us and while there are times that certainly should be the case, there are other times where it may be required to let him out of his cage. That’s exactly why we’re going to be discussing this inside the Iron Council, our exclusive brotherhood, for the month of May. Civilized behavior serves its purpose but too many of us have locked away our wild nature and thrown away the key. This month will be all about rediscovering who we are as men and why it’s critically important to tapping into our primal roots. You’ll band with a Battle Team of 14 other men, be challenged to take on some new adventures and risks and be held to task in accomplishing worthy objectives in your life. We all know that testosterone is one of the key hormones that drives much of our masculine behavior. What you may not know is that testosterone levels are trending downward for men of all ages. While those who see lower testosterone levels in themselves are racing towards testosterone replacement therapy, there are many natural ways to address T levels. Today, I am joined by Neuroscientist, Christopher Walker to talk about testosterone levels, the importance of micronutrients in your diet, the role of the thyroid and pituitary gland in regulating hormonal levels, training, supplementation, and how to master your testosterone levels. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS How hormonal levels impact men The Law of Compensation Finding truth in the medical field Defining health Balancing fitness Indicators of health What to avoid when building testosterone Resources to test your micronutrients Balancing hormones Recovery Nutritional elements Carbohydrates Lifestyle elements CHRISTOPHER WALKER My guest today is Christopher Walker. He is a neuroscientist who has been independently studying health, fitness, and testosterone for over a decade. He is also the author of Master Your T which is the definitive guide to raising your testosterone levels naturally. He and I met years ago and I’ve been following his work and implementing his programs in my life ever since and I’ve seen drastic improvements in my health, fitness, and nutrition. He’s arguably one of the foremost authorities on how hormonal levels impact men and today he’s here to talk with us about exactly how that happens and how we can improve our T-levels naturally and safely. Making a leap in any facet of your life whether it’s within a relationship, career, or anywhere in between is a challenging thing to do. The leaps, however, expose us to new growth and new opportunities that we do not open ourselves up to any other way. Today, I am joined by repeat guest, Tommy Baker, to talk about “the leap.” We discuss redefining risk, how to avoid overwhelm, strategies for giving yourself more clarity, eliminating noise, and tactics you can use for making the leap. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Making the leap in any area of life Seeking new opportunity How to overcome hurdles Why men struggle Taking the direct path The messy work of clarity Separating from toxic people Stepping into discomfort The common ingredients of growth The pain of “untapped potential” How to work toward making the leap Taking non-emotional inventory TOMMY BAKER Gentlemen, I am honored to introduce you to my friend and repeat guest, Tommy Baker. Tommy is one of the most positive people I know and when he sent me a copy of his latest book, The Leap of Your Life, I knew I wanted to get him back on the podcast for round two. He is a fitness and life coach and the founder of The Resist Average Academy podcast where he is teaching people across the planet to take control of their lives and overcome the hurdles and barriers that have been keeping them back. You’ll hear it in his voice that his positivity and energy is infectious and this conversation is packed with useful information, especially if you’re ready to make a big leap in your life that could lead to amazing results. IRON COUNCIL This morning as I was walking around in my yard, I noticed several weeds in my grass that actually looked like grass. But they weren’t, they were weeds attempting to infiltrate my yard. So, I did what any good steward over his yard would do. I picked them from the ground and threw them away. I share this with you because life is often very much the same way. And, like the weeds I picked this morning, it is critical we learn to recognize and remove any weeds from our life. But equally important is then replacing that void with what we actually want to grow. And, that’s where our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council comes in. We’ve created an environment designed to shape and grow men. We work collectively to hold each other to the highest possible standards and accomplish big things in our lives. And, when you band with us, you know that you are tapping into a band of brothers that will foster the powerful changes you want to see in your life. Join our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council. With regards to being a man, it seems to me that society has watered down and diluted the definition of masculinity. And, although we may not consciously realize it, the shift from "capable man" - strong, bold, courageous, and proficient - to something else entirely has impacted the way we show up in our lives. Today, I am joined by the one and only Elliott Hulse to talk about that societal shift and how they've influenced our thoughts and actions. We talk about why boys and men need to be initiated, the importance of the Patriarchy, how hierarchies serve men effectively, and why we need to return to masculinity. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Why boys and men must be initiated The critical component of any masculine initiation How to spot pseudo initiations How men work best together compared to women How to increase your sexual power Why your old self must die How men can "atone to their fathers" The importance of the Patriarchy in society How to destroy your inner beta The challenges of public education for boys and men Why a man needs to heal his "inner feminine" Developing patterns for success as a man How hierarchies serve men effectively How to develop the mature masculine Why men have inappropriate relationships with their women ELLIOTT HULSE Today I am joined by a man I know a lot of you follow, Mr. Elliot Hulse. I've been following Elliott for some time now and after dozens and dozens of requests to get him on the podcast, I reached out and made it happen. Elliott is a strength and conditioning coach and built up much of his reputation by teaching others how to develop physical strength. But his idea of strength goes so much deeper than that and covers not only physical but mental and emotional as well. Lately, he's been talking a lot about the demise of masculinity and how we, as men, can reclaim and become more masculine and how it would serve us well to do it. I knew this one would be interesting and unique to what we've done in the past. I think you're going to enjoy it and get a lot from our conversation which, based on how it went, will be one of many more conversations. And, he's probably one of the most fascinating people I've had the opportunity of getting to know over the past several years. He's got a master's degree in physiology and biomechanics and has lept into the fitness world, testing new medical and health theories and pushing himself as hard as just about any other human I've met. If building wealth was simply about math, we'd all be independently wealthy because we all know how to add and subtract. Seeing as how we're not all independently wealthy, there must be something else at play. And, it might surprise you to know that it's you that has the potential to become your own worst enemy. Today, I'm joined by repeat guest, Dr. Daniel Crosby to talk about human psychology and why it hinders your ability to build the level of wealth you're after. We cover how your behavior dictates investing success, how our physiology and psychology work against us, how a "contrarian mindset" will help us succeed, and how to invest - the right way.   SHOW HIGHLIGHTS How behavior dictates investing success 3 traits all investment strategies must posses How a contrarian mindset could improve your investment portfolio How to balance logic and emotion in investing How financial markets help you keep score in your life Why overestimating our abilities hinders performance How good behavior can be expensive but necessary The power of a financial coach How "hedonic adaptation" keeps us from being happy with more money How "action bias" hurts our portfolios How our social nature has created incredible amounts of wealth How our physiology and psychology can work against us How noise and chaos is our enemy and how to tune it out The need to overcome arrogance and ego in investing Why "rule-based behavioral investing" is so powerful   DR. DANIEL CROSBY Today I am joined by repeat guest, Dr. Daniel Crosby. He is a trained psychologist, behavioral finance expert, and asset manager. Specifically, he studies market psychology to understand the nature of why we do what we do and how it impacts our ability to invest successfully in financial markets. He is a New York Times Bestselling Author and his ideas have made him a critical voice and expert in the financial community. As a former financial advisor myself, I've been connected with Dr. Crosby for years and have applied many of his ideas and teachings into my previous financial practice. If you're anything like me, you're fed up with the noise and nonsense we see in mainstream and social media. It seems that everywhere we turn and with everything we say, people are looking for reasons to be upset and/or offended. My guest today does not allow that to back him down or dictate the conversations he wants to have on some very important subjects everyone else is too afraid to talk about, from sexual orientation, religion, masculinity, politics and just about every other topic we're "not supposed to talk about." His name is Chad Prather and, today, we talk about our responsibility to speak up, calling boys into manhood, the rise of the victim culture, and the power of being politically incorrect. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The power of political incorrectness Our responsibility to speak up How to become a more effective communicator The rise of the "victim culture" The delusion of social media Overcoming the vocal minority The danger of identity politics Calling boys into manhood Losing the ability to connect face-to-face Learning to be satisfied but not content The power of storytelling Re-orienting a generation of weak people Developing a vision Taking risks Fostering courage and confidence CHAD PRATHER My guest today is a man that won't need an introduction for a lot of you. His name is Chad Prather and you may know him as the political cowboy. But just in case you don't already know, Chad is a comedian and a political commentator willing to discuss (and have some fun with) some of the most polarizing topics in society today. He's been entertaining people on TV as early at 6 years old and hasn't let up since. He's been featured on Fox New, A&E, CNN, MSN, and The Blaze. In fact, he's everywhere. So much so that I can list all the things he's up to. That said, I'm excited to have had the chance to sit down and talk with someone who I admire for not only his perspective and his interesting approach to sharing it but his willingness to do so in an environment that seems to be increasingly wanting to shut down these types of conversations. There is no question that we are increasingly committing ourselves to digital use. The fact is that our use of digital technology has presented us with some opportunities never before available in the history of mankind. But that doesn't mean it doesn't pose a very serious threat to our sanity and well-being. Today, I talk with repeat guest, Cal Newport, to talk about some of those threats and, more importantly, how we harness the power of digital technology while minimizing the risk that inherently comes with it. We talk about the philosophy of digital minimalism, why you ought to consider a "digital de-clutter," how to keep from losing control to technology, and how to minimize digital use while maximizing your life. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS What is digital minimalism How to develop a philosophy of technology use How to incorporate a digital de-clutter Why you should place priority on long-term meaning over short-term satisfaction How we lose control to technology Why technology is not neutral Why clutter is costly How to develop a personal technology process How we're beginning to see mental health issues associated with technology use Strategies for overcoming digital addiction How tech. companies capitalize on the "attention economy" Why social approval is so compelling, even if we know the dangers Why real-world interaction is so much more powerful than digital interaction Why every man needs to strategize his free time How to utilize the idea of "slow media" in your life CAL NEWPORT Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend and repeat guest, Mr. Cal Newport. Cal is an MIT graduate and a professor of computer science at Georgetown University and, in addition to that, he is extremely interested in the intersection of technology and society. I know many of you have read his books, including, So Good They Can't Ignore you, Deep Work, and his latest New York Times Bestseller, Digital Minimalism. I've been fascinated with his work since I first read, So Good They Can't Ignore you. In fact, many of his theories and ideas have been used in my life to build this movement, Order of Man. I'm not sure I would have had so much success with the organization without incorporating some of his ideas, including the ones he'll be sharing with us today.
