Bonchon created their signature sauce in Korea back in 2002, and have kept their original recipe ever since.  Every piece of Bonchon chicken is double-fried, then hand brushed with their signature sauce. Bonchon was created to satisfy a craving. A craving for nostalgia and familiarity. A craving for the indulgent taste of authentic, flavorful, crunchy, Korean fried chicken accompanied with a variety of unique pan Asian comfort foods. In the beginning, there were few places to satisfy this craving in the United States. Their founder, Mr. Seo, introduced premium, flavorful sauces and cooking techniques served in a globally inspired, modern and sleek environment. And for the next generation of diners, a new way to experience fried chicken was born. Bonchon was recognized by Business Insider in 2019 as “the gold standard for fried chicken” beating out five major restaurant chains as “best chicken wings”. We are meeting with Flynn Dekker, CEO of Bonchon. In Part Two we play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising.

This week we are discussing two must read books before Memorial  or Labor Day.  We begin the show with Danny Lyon, author of  The Colour of My Underwear is Blue.  With over 60 marathons and 20 years of business experience,Danny Lyon shares why people create such varying levels of business and personal success. Lyon reveals the secrets of the success "high-flyers", the "turnaround artists", the "comfort zone dwellers", and the "give-ups". No matter where you are in your life right now, Lyon sheds light on how you may be holding yourself back and what it takes to get out of your own way.  Next, we meet with Steve Barnett, author of Gumption - Taking Bubba Gump from Movie to Restaurant.  Written in a cinematic style, this book is about the creation, growth, and sale of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. The concept began when Paramount Pictures reached out to see if there was interest in creating a restaurant based on the movie Forrest Gump. It is also the personal story of the author’s growth as a CEO and creator of restaurant concepts. A host of situations are described such as restaurant concept creation, high stakes boardroom confrontations, and escaping corrupt officials in foreign lands. The narrative is partly an unvarnished peak behind the everyday scenes of restaurants, movie studios, and Wall Street. There is also an almost step-by-step recounting of how the Bubba Gump concept and others were created and operated. Lessons can be learned on unorthodox methods used in moving from traditional approaches to untried ways of doing business.

Swimming with the Sharks Today we are going to play clips from two franchises that appeared on one of our favorite shows…Shark Tank.  When Michael and Babz Barnett saw a tweet from ABC scouting contestants for new TV show, Shark Tank, six years ago, they had no idea what they’d be walking into. In fact, they saw the premier episode in their hotel room the night before their own taping. But despite the lack of familiarity with the sharks entrepreneurs have today, they presented their concept, Romp n’ Roll – a modernized kids gym perfecting the intersection of entertainment and education for kids ages 3 months to 5 years, and were offered a deal. Which they declined. Next, we meet with Jerry Hancock, the founder of Sub Zero Ice Cream and former guest on Shark Tank.  Sub Zero Ice Cream uses negative 321-degree liquid nitrogen to freeze and hand mix each customized order with a unique patented process. Besides its unique and highly visual freezing method, Sub Zero Ice Cream caters to a variety of dietary needs. The brand offers six bases including a classic premium custard, low-fat custard and yogurt, as well as lactose free, vegan and sugar free options. After selecting a base, guests can customize with their own mix-ins, creating limitless options when building custom ice cream creations.

Several years ago, I was inspired to conduct a study on women in franchising based on my interview with Gigi Butler.  The study was titled, “Women Entrepreneurs and the Influence of Gender on Successful Franchising".  The study was published in the Global Journal of Entrepreneurship.  This study explores the influence of gender on franchise business ownership.  Here is a link to the study.  https://www.igbr.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/GJE_Vol_2_No_1_2018.pdf Today you will hear our interview with Gigi Butler.  Gigi Butler, is the founder of Gigi's Cupcakes. It recently occurred to me I haven’t shared with our listeners what else I do in addition to Franchise Interviews.  I am a full-time professor and course leader for several marketing courses at Purdue University Global.  I am excited to share some exciting news.  For the last several years, I have been working on a paper that was published in The Qualitative Report Journal.  The Qualitative Report is a Q1 ranked journal on Scimago Journal & Country Rank (SJR). Q1 to Q4 refer to journal ranking quartiles within a subdiscipline using the SJR citation index. Thus, a first quartile journal (i.e., Q1) has an SJR in the top 25% of journals for at least one of its classified subdisciplines.  The name of the study is called A Qualitative Study: Military Veterans and Franchise Ownership.  This study focuses on the military experience and motivation to become a franchise business owner. You can download a copy of the study on the following link: https://nsuworks.nova.edu/tqr/vol25/iss3/14/ I would love to hear your thoughts on the study.  I thought a great interview to play for today’s show is with JDog Junk Removal franchise.  JDog Junk Removal, a full-service junk removal franchise, which is taking veteran employment assistance to new heights with the creation of a franchise opportunity, offered exclusively to veterans and active-duty members of the United States Military. The concept was created by an Army veteran in response to the excessively high unemployment rate for returning service members.

Snapology was founded by two sisters, Lisa and Laura Coe, who decided to start their business after seeing the love their children had for creative play using building blocks and other materials that snap together. Laura found that her son’s love of LEGO’s helped calm him down when he was dealing with mild behavior issues. She looked for local programs that he could join, but could not find any that fit. Together the sisters came up with the idea of offering enrichment classes and camps to teach science, technology, engineering, mathematics, art and literacy concepts.  Listen to our interview with Laura Coe. Not long ago, I came across several interesting articles written by the Telephone Doctor Nancy Friedman on the Millennials.  One article was called, “Millennials + Customer Service. An Oxymoron? Or Great Generation?” and “Do We Owe the Millennials an Apology?”.  Nancy and I discuss this fascinating topic.  Here is one of the scenarios Nancy encountered.  A young gal, about 25, preparing to sit in one of her presentations at the NAR conference in DC came up to her with arms crossed and in a slightly defensive mode says, “You’re not going to tell us how bad we are, are you?”  Find out what happened next by listening to the show.  Nancy is the author of nine books on communications, sales, and customer service, Nancy will energize, inspire, and motivate you with tips, ideas, skills, and techniques you’ll use the rest of your life. Nancy’s keynote speaker presentations are high-energy, high in content, and best of all, high-results!  For more information on the Telephone Doctor, go to https://telephonedoctor.com/ In Part Two, we play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.

We are meeting with Angel Aguayo Director of Operations at Sushi Sake.  Sushi Sake, a Miami-based neighborhood sushi bar with 14-units is now franchising and already has two signed franchise agreements in Florida. Known for an expansive menu, dramatic longue inspired atmosphere and late-night hours, the founders Angel Aguayo and James Aguayo are now ready to take their fusion-inspired creation nationwide. Founded in 2009, the Aguayo brothers were ready to step out in the $12.8 billion market size of sushi restaurants. Growing up in restaurants and frequently dining at Benihana, Angel felt the industry was struck in the ‘traditional setting,’ and wanted to bring fusion offerings to the table. Another industry void they are alleviating is many good sushi restaurants aren’t able to provide that same quality on their hibachi side. Sushi Saki is known for offering the best of both worlds and creates an interactive dining experience. It is today’s Japanese Sushi restaurant with the perfect blend of a Teppanyaki house and an original Sushi spot. Additionally, Sushi Sake locations offer late-night hours compared to other venues (open until midnight - 5am depending on location) to serve a crowd that can’t find a quality restaurant open after a night out.  In part two we play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.

The Planet Smoothie franchise began in Atlanta during the mid-1990s, when smoothies were first beginning to be seen as a food offering on their own rather than part of an extended menu. Up until then smoothies were almost completely associated with hardcore health fanatics — people who spent a lot of time at the gym and were fanatical about counting calories  More Americans were looking to slim down and become healthier, a trend which continues through today, and smoothies became seen as a way to enhance a healthy lifestyle without sacrificing taste or convenience. As more people discovered smoothies, the market exploded, and Planet Smoothie quickly spread throughout the Southeast, becoming a dominant brand across the Southeastern and Northeastern United States. The opportunity to rapidly expand Planet Smoothie excited a team of veteran franchise executives at Kahala Brands, which acquired Planet Smoothie in 2015. Under their leadership, Planet Smoothie has developed the capabilities and resources, such as improved supply chains, more purchasing power and a single operating system, to accelerate growth and drive stronger results for franchisees.Planet Smoothie is on the move. The hunger for convenient, healthy and great-tasting food, with a transparent list of recognizable ingredients, continues to grow. A customer survey by public relations giant Edelman found that 83% of customers want that combo of good nutrition and great taste, for example, and only 50% of them think the food-and-beverage industry is doing a good job. We are meeting with Stacey Wopnford, Brand President at Planet Smoothie. Planet Smoothie is a fun and exciting smoothie franchise that knows the importance in differentiating itself from the competition. With a unique menu and bright color scheme, Planet Smoothie stands out from the rest.  In part 2 we play a clip from our poplar Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.

This week we are discussing two must read books before Labor Day.

We have a great show today. We are meeting with Jason Anderson, President of the fastest growing coworking franchise, Venture X.  Venture X strives to provide high quality, flexible, collaborative spaces to business professionals allowing their members to grow their companies and exceed their business goals. They hope to provide a unique set of amenities and benefits that support business growth and professional development. Their vision is to provide upscale, flexible workspaces in every major city in the US and in some overseas markets. As the coworking space industry grows, a number of key trends are emerging. Owners and operators of coworking spaces likely find that attention to these trends will help them to attract and retain new business. One important trend is the central role technology plays in the formation of a coworking space. Some coworking spaces owners who operate on their own invest only in the bare minimum when it comes to technology. As their business grows, they find it hard to keep up when they don’t have the infrastructure to support a larger number of clients. Venture X helps our franchisees start strong by guiding them as they create a technological infrastructure that can handle a large number of clients being “online” at any given time. We also help them to secure technology that will attract clients like “smart” conference rooms and high-end video conferencing equipment. In 1996, she sold her house and cashed out her 401K plan for the down payment on the $1.7 millions dollar SBA loan needed to buy and build a Kids R Kids Academy franchise in Orlando, Florida. Over the next 15 years, she expanded twice and grew her business into one of the largest franchises in her industry before exiting successfully in 2012.  Now, an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at Rollins College and contributing writer, Christy has turned her focus to helping others realize greater professional rewards through growing a successful business.   In Part Two, we discuss Chrity's book, "My Adventure In Franchise Ownership".  "I admit, there were many times that I felt tired, alone and frustrated about my ability to run my business consistently well. I was disappointed that there was nothing available to help me and other franchisees get through the tough times. I learned quickly that the franchisor could only do so much and that the rest was up to ME.  That's when I put the 4 Pillars Approach in place at my franchise. After I sold, I decided to be the person to add the missing piece. I wrote Adventures in Franchise Ownership to help others build a framework that leads to greater success and satisfaction. I really hope this tool can be utilized to help you achieve success in your business."

Dr. Tomshack embarked on his own practice directly out of chiropractic school and quickly saw success. Unlike many other doctors, he had a particular knack for the finance, marketing and operations spectrum of clinic ownership. Employing 37 chiropractors in order to welcome new patients, Dr. Tomshack grew his one chiropractic clinic to four, each of which was five times the size of a typical chiropractic office and seeing more than 1,000 new patients each month. We have a great show today.  We are meeting with Scott Nichols of Floyd's 99 Barbershop.  With 115+ units across the U.S., the barbershop known for its edgy, alternative vibes that embrace individuality is revitalizing its franchise efforts.  The Denver-based franchisor had never emphasized a strategic effort toward franchise growth -- everything had been word of mouth through personal relationships with the founders, existing customers and simply people walking by who loved the concept. As it nears 20 years of business and looks ahead to the next 20, Floyd's 99 wants to expand its footprint with strong franchise partners that embody its brand and vibe.  To help with the expansion, they hired seasoned franchise executive, Scott Nichols. He joins Floyd’s 99 with more than 25 years of franchise experience – working for nationally-recognized brands like Dunkin’, Jimmy Johns and Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores as well as emerging franchise concepts like SPENGA where he grew the brand from one company owned to 62 franchises sold.  Today, Scott will share the founders' story (three brothers from the sport's concession business), how the brand differs from other barbershops/hair salons, growth/opportunities in the hair/beauty space, rich culture the brand embodies, its franchise strategy, where it sees itself in the marketplace, and more.  In Part Two, we play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.

. As they were living out their dreams as members of the LSU basketball team traveling the country, they had the opportunity to visit some of the best restaurants/sports bars and began recognizing the need for such a concept in back in Baton Rouge. The idea for Walk-On's Bistreaux & Bar started to take shape 35,000 feet up in the air as they sketched out their vision for a floor plan on the back of a napkin while the team flew home from a game. They turned in their idea as a class project and received a C, being told it needed some work. Despite having little business experience and even less financial backing the two incorporated the traits they learned on the basketball court – hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence – into their vision. On September 9, 2003 their shared dream became a reality as Walk-On’s opened for business in the shadows of LSU’s Tiger Stadium. The business took off – the brand started growing through corporate locations and launched its official franchise opportunity. In 2015, NFL All-Pro Quarterback Drew Brees caught wind and joined the Walk-On’s team as co-owner and partner.  We are meeting with Brandon Landy Founder, Co-Owner and CEO of Walk-On’s Bistreaux & Bar.  Walk-On’s is a place where over-the-top enthusiasm and culture is the daily norm. What sets them apart from all others though, is their authentic, mouthwatering Louisiana cuisine prepared fresh in a from-scratch kitchen. That includes seafood, traditional Cajun cuisine and burgers built for two hands. Like Louisiana, food is truly Walk-On’s calling card and the reason you’ll keep coming back for more. In Part Two, we play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.
