Sometimes we treat God more like a casual companion than a sacred deity who deserves our utmost respect and reverence. How do we avoid this dangerous attitude? How do we recalibrate our perspective? Chuck Swindoll invites us today to consider a fascinating portion of Scripture, with the experience of an ancient king who encountered the awesome holiness of God.

What comes to your mind when you think about God? Whatever those thoughts are, one thing is true: they say more about you than they do about God. Fashionable thinking today-in a society that no longer receives its cues from the Scripture-wants a god who is predictable, not one of mystery. We want a god who is comfortable, not one who makes us shudder.

In the contemporary church movement, there's a growing tendency to approach our holy God with a casual attitude, as though He's a good buddy who lives next door. And congregations have a tendency to elevate their pastor rather than the God he serves. Today Chuck Swindoll finds, from a somewhat obscure passage of Scripture, the importance of showing God reverence.

Our belief or disbelief in God adds nothing to nor takes anything away from His glory, any more than our sight or hearing commands the sun and the birds. But if we were suddenly struck by self-conceit to steal God's glory, even then He would remain undiminished. God's glory, majesty, and magnificence are His and His alone, and with no other does He share it.

If the human race were suddenly struck blind, the sun would continue to shine by day. If we were suddenly struck deaf, birds would continue to sing and brooks to babble. And if we were suddenly struck with the "disease" of atheism, God would continue to exist in His resplendent glory. Let's regain a healthy perspective on the mystery and wonder of our triune God.

Chuck Swindoll presents the final message in the Classic Series called Searching the Scriptures. Over the last month, Chuck has walked us through the personal techniques he's applied in his private study of the Bible. He's likened the process to preparing a nutritious meal. The goal, of course, is to teach us how to become independent in our study of the Bible.

When the apostle Paul was alone in Athens, as recorded in Acts 17, he found himself in the busy market place full of idols in the streets of Athens, far away from home and from Christian friends. It's in that context that we are given an example of the fruit of biblical preparation and compassion as Paul proclaimed the God of heaven and earth and His Son, Jesus Christ.

All across the world, there's a famine in our churches. People are spiritually hungry and longing to feed at the banquet table of God's Word, but there are few who know how to prepare a nutritional spiritual meal. Whether you're a pastor or a layperson, you can learn how to share the truths of Scripture confidently with your curious friends and neighbors.

Now that Chuck Swindoll has shown us his personal techniques for reading and understanding the Bible, today he'll cite a story from Jesus to illustrate how to deploy the methodology and discover application for our times. As we look at the parable of the farmer casting seed, Chuck invites us to let the seed of God's Word sink deeply into our lives after we study it.

Throughout this series, Chuck Swindoll has carefully described the techniques he's applied in his personal study of the Bible for nearly 60 years. Today he'll illustrate his process by citing a powerful story Jesus told in the book of Mark. This lesson brings the methodology to life as we discover the still-relevant meaning of Jesus' parable for each of us in modern times.

We have been learning how to study the Bible for ourselves, through observation, interpretation, correlation with other verses, and then, ultimately, application. Now, let's put the process to work through observing the "Parable of the Soils" recorded in Mark 4:1-20. This parable is particularly helpful for practicing Bible study methods because Jesus Himself interprets it for us.

It is impossible to overemphasize the value of personal study if you hope to know, apply, and teach God's Word. It's hard work. God's will is in His Word, and the keener you are in the study and preparation of His Word, the more able you will be to teach it to others. Today Chuck Swindoll describes the importance of preparing our hearts to respond to the truths of Scripture.

Before today's message, we have the privilege of eavesdropping on the congregation of Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas. On the anniversary of their founding, it's a tradition for the members to recite a Covenant of Commitment. As a pastor, Chuck Swindoll believes that engagement in a local church family represents a personal promise.

The philosopher and teacher C. S. Lewis said, "If you give me ten minutes to chop down a tree, I will spend my first two minutes sharpening my axe." You don't have to be brilliant or significantly creative to know the Bible, but you do have to spend time preparing, studying, praying, and focusing your time and attention on the text of Scripture. Preparation is essential.

If you know that a hurricane is headed your way but refuse to find shelter, the results may be devastating! Knowledge that fails to take appropriate action is useless. In like fashion, we can spend an entire lifetime reading the Bible, but until we apply its wisdom and walk in the truth-allowing it to transform us from within-absolutely nothing has been accomplished
September 27, 2019
We have previously spent time learning about observation, interpretation, and correlation in the process of learning how to get into the Word for ourselves. Now, we come to the crowning part of the learning process-the application of God's truth and instruction to our lives. Without application, as Chuck Swindoll explains today, you have not given life to the text.

What a tragedy it is to do the hard work of studying the sacred Scriptures, coming to an understanding of what they are saying, and then failing to apply it personally. It is in the application of the truth that we find conviction, direction, correction, and encouragement. Until we apply the Bible's wisdom and walk in the truth, nothing has been accomplished.

False teachers can quote eloquently from Scripture, while distorting God's Word for their own purposes. How do we avoid falling into this same trap of twisting the truth? By remembering that although the Bible was written by 40 different men over centuries of time, it has one divine Author and one overarching theme. The Scriptures tell the story of Jesus Christ from cover to cover.

God has revealed His Word in the Book of God called the Bible. Because of His magnificent revelation, where He gave His inspired Word and oversaw the recording of it, He takes great delight in illuminating our minds with an understanding of it. This comes as we read each passage as part of the larger story. We face dangers when we take a passage out of context.

We've learned the value of observation, seeing what God has written, and interpretation, understanding what a passage means. In this message, Chuck Swindoll explores correlation, the idea of comparing verses with other verses in order to gain a balanced and reasonable understanding of God's truth. Context is critical when it comes to biblical interpretation.

In order to apply biblical truth, you must follow certain guidelines. First, there's observation: determining what the Scripture says by paying attention to words, phrases, even parts of speech and punctuation. Observation answers, "What does it say?" Observation leads to interpretation. Interpreting Scripture has to do with understanding, which answers, "What does it mean?"

We often approach the Bible with a preconceived notion about what it says and then try to fit the passages to support our own ideas. It's a fairly common trap for both believers and unbelievers alike. When we've read a passage many times before, we settle on an idea that may not qualify as an accurate explanation. That's why we must read the Bible with fresh eyes each time.
September 18, 2019
We often have good intentions about reading the Bible on a regular basis but sometimes we struggle to understand what it actually says. The ancient stories and customs feel so removed from our own experience that it doesn't always seem relevant. The outcome is often a sense of frustration that leads to giving up. To apply biblical truth, we must follow certain guidelines.

If you've been a student of the Bible for a long time, you've probably found yourself skimming over certain verses that are quite familiar to you. But rapidly passing beyond observation to plunge into interpretation is the formula for error. Scripture is living and active, so there's always something new to learn from any passage no matter how often you've read it.

People often wonder how pastors glean so much from Scripture, and they get discouraged when they can't do the same. Many Christians see the words in their Bibles but fail to observe anything of importance. That's why Chuck is teaching us how to observe. If you've ever been frustrated while reading the Bible, these principles will open the door to deeper understanding.

God didn't provide the Bible to satisfy our idle curiosity about history. Nor was it written so the preacher would have something to say on Sunday morning. The Bible was written to reveal God's sovereign plan and to explain our place in His redemptive story! Let's learn techniques that, when applied in our personal study, can transform the way we understand the Bible.

Those who never learn basic cooking skills have two choices. Either they depend on someone else to prepare their meals or they head for the nearest drive-thru for fast food. This word picture parallels our spiritual nourishment. Young Christians depend on others to provide biblical teaching, while mature believers have learned how to prepare their own spiritual meals.

Effective ministry comprises a balance between two sometimes conflicting principles: biblical faithfulness and cultural relevance. How easy, and deadly, to have one without the other, but how rewarding it is to have both. In John 13, Jesus, just before His crucifixion, stooped to wash the feet of His disciples. This iconic imagery is indelibly marked in our memory as a symbol for servanthood. Chuck Swindoll draws time-tested wisdom from this unforgettable moment when Jesus demonstrated humility and love. In washing His followers' feet, Jesus modeled a virtue that should mark every leader.
September 4, 2019
Chuck Swindoll takes us to that intimate moment between Jesus and His disciples when their Lord and Teacher girded Himself with a towel and washed their dirt-covered feet like a servant. In that moment, Jesus taught them the meaning of love, not only by command but by example. That simple four-letter verb forms our ministry impulse-to love others sincerely.

Chuck Swindoll takes us to the shortest verse in the Bible, "Rejoice always," that it may fill our every hour as we toil day by day, month by month, and year by year in God's vineyard. Paul understood that a spirit of gratitude is not only a bouquet of blessing that we pass along to the recipient. Thankfulness is like medicine for the ailing sinner who gives it.
August 29, 2019
Courtesy, our parents taught us, is a virtue to be exercised through modest expressions of gratitude. Opening the door to ingratitude and letting it get comfortable in your heart might be one of the quickest ways to kill a spiritually vibrant ministry. But the Spirit has provided all you need to fight that deadly attitude and thrive with gratitude in the Lord's work.

Paul once referred to God's wisdom as unsearchable-or some translations use the word "inexhaustible." The point is clear that God's Word contains depth without end! While recognizing the limitless depth of the Bible, Chuck Swindoll cautioned future servants of the church to remain true to Scripture, just as Paul instructed Timothy to handle God's Word with accuracy.

If a preacher of God's Word ever had a life verse, it would be 2 Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth." Tragically, the trap of greed has tripped up far too many preachers in our day. Some have gained international celebrity because of their smoothness of speech while, behind the scenes, cultivating a lavish lifestyle that seems incongruent with their calling. Chuck Swindoll delivered a bold warning to an audience of men and women preparing for full-time vocational ministry.
August 23, 2019
Even a ministry's most faithful, who work tirelessly for God's people for decades, can fall into the subtle temptation of greed. An unguarded heart can tempt us to think we deserve the big pay off . . . today! Waiting is exhausting. Now is the time to get the reward. Chuck Swindoll shares a serious warning from God's Word to help ministry leaders keep their hearts straight.

Think for a moment about the obstacles standing in your way. Maybe it's a financial mountain you can't conquer, or a son or daughter whose life is spinning out of control. All of us can identify something that makes us feel small and powerless. Between the lines of 1 Samuel 17 are timeless, relevant principles that apply to us as we face the "giants" of our own world.
August 15, 2019
Sometimes life brings intimidating moments our way when we feel completely overwhelmed and entirely unqualified. Chuck Swindoll teaches from 1 Samuel chapter 17 where we find David standing before Goliath clutching nothing more than a handful of stones. The story is familiar, but the application may surprise you. See how God can turn our terror into triumph.
August 14, 2019
Bring up the story of David and Goliath with most people, and they will be familiar with the epochal event that took place thousands of years ago in Israel. David and Goliath are doubtlessly the most famous characters in the Old Testament. Even most non-Christians can recall what happened. But there is much more to the account than a shepherd boy who killed a giant.

Through a series of epochal events, God drew Joseph out of the pit of slavery and raised him to the pinnacle of honor. As second in command of Egypt, Joseph could save his brothers from famine. What Joseph's brothers had intended as harm, God intended for good! Joseph's life gives us hope that God can redeem our past, heal our wounds, and bring beauty from our ashes.

God never intended His children to become the recipients of abusive behavior. Whether it's emotional, sexual or physical, no one should be victimized by a selfish family member living in sin. Woven throughout this tragic story of Joseph and his jealous brothers are threads of God's grace and triumph. It's an encouraging lesson for anyone who's suffered from exploitation.

When Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery, Joseph became a victim of what we today call human trafficking. Who can say what terrible abuses Joseph endured at the hands of his captors and the indignities he suffered as he was auctioned to the highest bidder. Despite the injustices, Joseph stayed true to his principles and to his faith in God.

Grand stories that become too familiar sometimes lose their original impact. After all, when you know how the plot develops, how the crisis comes to a peak, and how the story resolves, it tends to pull the suspense right out of the moment. Chuck Swindoll urges us to re-live a frightening moment as if hearing it for the first time: when Abraham brought Isaac to an altar of fire.
August 6, 2019
After decades of trusting God for an heir, Abraham finally realized his dream when Isaac was born. But then, God issued a shocking command to Abraham: "Go and sacrifice [Isaac] as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you" (Genesis 22:2). It was the ultimate test of faith for Abraham and set the scene for an unforgettable epochal event.
