THE FIRST, WORST SPIDER-MAN COMICS? With the hasty exit of Marv Wolfman as the writer of Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel had to scramble to find a replacement. So, they turned to another legendary writer in the Spider-Office: Denny O’Neil. Famous for his historic runs on Green Lantern/Green Arrow and Batman, Denny’s run of Amazing Spider-Man books are probably the most overlooked, under-printed, and forgotten issues in Spidey’s 60-year publishing history. On this week’s show, Dan and Mark will explore why it is that Denny O’Neil’s run represents Spidey’s true “Lost Years”! This episode was edited by Rick Coste, with production support from Andy Myers. Far out! Welcome to Season 3 of the All-New Amazing Spider-Talk podcast, where Mark and Dan will be taking a look at Spider-Man’s transition into the Bronze Age of comics. Today, Dan and Mark take a look at one of the more outlandish stories that would close out Gerry Conway’s run with a bang, shaking up the status quo of the series while closing out all the stories he wanted to tell, and would serve as inspiration for some of the most notorious Spider-Man stories decades later. That’s right, they are talking about the Clone Saga… the ORIGINAL Clone Saga! This episode was edited by Rick Coste. This week’s Patreon podcasts include a review of Absolute Carnage #1. On this episode of the show, Dan and Mark are joined by Spider-Man comics artist Erik Larsen who penciled Amazing Spider-Man roughly from issue 327 to 350, bringing his unique style to the book and following up his friend and collaborator Todd McFarlane. He would then succeed McFarlane again for his “The Return of the Sinister Six” in Spider-Man #18-23. Larsen helped to distinctly change the style of the webslinger’s books that we still see reflected today. Erik left Marvel to form Image Comics and created his own series Savage Dragon, which still runs today with Larsen at the creative helm, where he won an Inkwell Award for his work in 2017. But, most surprisingly, it was recently announced that Erik would be returning to Marvel this September, alongside Mark Bagley and Gerry Conway, for a special Marvel 80th Anniversary one-shot called Amazing Spider-Man: Going Big. Double the size! Double the thrills! Dan and Mark have reached another arbitrary milestone: episode 200! This time they are outdoing themselves with content that’s far better than endless backup stories, rotting inventory shlock, or needless character deaths (at least we hope). Yes, they flew across the country to attend TERRIFICON at Mohegan Sun to sit down with several fans and reminisce about the show’s history, interview a ton of amazing Spider-Man creators, and listen to your fabulous voicemails about your experiences with the show. Basically, prepare yourself for a epic-sized amount of naval-gazing goodness, and our hosts potentially murdering a burglar. You won’t want to miss a second of it! Guests include: Nick Spencer, Christopher Priest, Bob McLeod, Barry Kitson, Paul Soles, Marc Guggenheim, Brian Jacob, Swarm, and many more. Of course, none of this madness would have been possible without our wonderful supporters on the Patreon page. This week’s Patreon Exclusive episodes include a review of Amazing Spider-Man #5/LGY 806. If you’d like to become a patron, please visit: Amazing Spider-Talk Patreon Page We also would love to see you become a part of our Amazing Spider-Slack community board.
