We visit one of America’s most famous plantations with three descendants of enslaved Virginians... In 1784, Thomas Jefferson brought the enslaved chef James Hemings, brother of Sally Hemings, with him to France, to train under the French culinary masters of the day. Hemings used what he learned to create a cuisine that was half French, half Virginian, and brought it back to Jefferson's plantation, Monticello. French fries. Ice cream. Mac and cheese. Meringue. All of these foods came to America through the kitchens at Monticello. This week, Dan tours those kitchens with three descendants of enslaved Virginians, including Michael Twitty, culinary historian and author of The Cooking Gene.  Today's sponsors: Go to Larabar.com to explore all the fun flavors. The word "plantation" pops up a lot in the food world – Plantation Mint Tea, Plantation Chicken, Plantation Rum. But it's not a culinary term. It doesn't indicate certain spices or cooking methods. So what are white people in food who use this word trying to evoke? Inspired by a piece by food writer Osayi Endolyn, we go on a mission to find out. In the process, we try to learn something about whiteness in America.  Today's sponsors: Go to Larabar.com to explore all the fun flavors. We go behind the scenes of one of the web's most beloved food shows, Gourmet Makes, with host Claire Saffitz of the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen. Simon Doonan has been called "the world's most famous window dresser," but he never wanted to be that stereotype of a fashion person, looking down his nose at everybody. He's always encouraged people to "dress like themselves." In other words, his approach to fashion is a lot like Dan's approach to food. And yet, people still expect both of them to be judgmental. So what does that say about our culture? And how did Simon become so self-assured? Plus, Simon talks about self-help, Marianne Williamson, and surviving the AIDS crisis in the 1980s.  Today's sponsors: Go to ADA.org/sporkful today for more information. Mary Giuliani grew up as one of the few Italian kids in a mostly Jewish town, so she went to lots of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs – the Jewish rite of passage that comes at age 13. And at these parties, while the other kids were slow dancing awkwardly, Mary was engaged in a different kind of youthful discovery – she was falling in love with pigs in blankets. Little did she know that this classic appetizer would become the foundation for her meteoric rise to catering stardom. In this week's show, taped live on stage, Mary talks about what she learned from her Grandma Lucille – a powerful hotel owner when few women held such a job -- and how working crazy hours, and struggling with infertility, affected her marriage.  Today's sponsors: Go to Larabar.com to Explore all their fun flavors. Jason Jones got famous for his character on the Daily Show: a bro-ish, “man’s man” who went after liberal snowflakes. In real life, he's a guy who'll spend 45 minutes soft-scrambling eggs for his three kids. He got into cooking in part because of feelings of career inadequacy, when his wife Samantha Bee's star rose faster than his. That dynamic is parodied in Jason's hit show The Detour, on TBS. So does that mean he's really a softie? As Dan learned when they met up, it's not so simple. Today's sponsors: Go thirdlove.com/SPORKFUL for 15% off today. When Ann Kim became an actor, her immigrant parents disowned her. It was no different than “being a whore,” her mom said. Every parent fears they’ll f*ck up their kid. But what if there’s a hack, one tiny thing you can control? Maybe if you get their eating right, you’ll set up them up to succeed.  Spoiler: there are no hacks. Sorry. And writer Carvell Wallace knows this very well. On the podcast Mom And Dad Are Fighting, he digs into his trove of mistakes – and momentary victories – raising teens to help other people with tiny humans feel slightly less alone.  This week, Carvell and Dan talk about using food to connect kids to their heritage, sussing out whether that fight with your kids was about you or them, and questioning whether “adventurous eating” is really a virtue.
