#486: This week we’re talking about getting through the things we face in life that can feel so overwhelming   When the little things feel big and too much to cope with, it’s a nudge that we need to slow down and take better care of ourselves.   Overwhelm can be a response to anxiety, change, trauma, exhaustion or depression. And, while we often feel like we should push through, it’s seldom helpful.     Resources for this episode: HOW TO CALM YOUR FRAGILE MIND: Finding freedom from unwanted thoughts We often receive questions in our inbox asking us to teach more about working with unwanted thoughts and painful emotions. And also receive regular requests for more information on Ayurveda and its teachings on calming the mind - this is the course where we go in-depth into both subjects. Discover how to use your senses to calm your mind Feel the Emotional Stress Release Technique dissolving worry from the forefront of your mind Follow a guided EFT Tapping Practice for honoring and soothing your emotions Experience our Guided Ayurvedic Meditation for finding peace in the present moment   I listened to a sample of How to Calm Your Fragile Mind. I cried. I cried because it made more sense than any medical practitioner I’ve met in my 38 years. Your words instantly helped. Thank you. - Nadene   Special offer: Save 25% through the end of February with the coupon code: peace Visit anxietyslayer.teachable.com to know more

#485 This week we’re sharing a conversation that Shann had recently with Dr. John Demartini.  Dr. Demartini is a human behavior specialist, International best-selling author, educator, founder of the Demartini Institute and the author of 40 books that have been translated into 36 languages. He has featured in films including The Secret, appearing on Larry King Live, and regularly contributes to Oprah Magazine.   In today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected society there’s an undeniable increase in people experiencing varying degrees of anxiety. We get loads of emails from our listeners about how they are suffering from all sorts of anxiety. At the top of the list is health anxiety followed by fear of having an anxiety attack. Dr. Demartini and Shann dive into the conversation discussing the relationship between fear and anxiety. Points covered in the episode John shares his view about anxiety being a form of fear.  “Fear is the assumption that you’re about to experience in the near or far future through your senses or imagination, more pain than pleasure, more negative than positive, more disadvantage than an advantage, or more challenge than support from someone, some event, or something.” We discuss the triggers of anxiety, understanding the benefits of anxiety and the value of understanding what is at the core of suffering. We discuss how you can dig deeper and learn to dissolve their anxiety. “We don’t have to be victims of our history we can be masters of our destiny by taking command of our perceptions. We can make a mountain out of a molehill or a molehill out of a mountain. We can transform our once assumed hell into an opportunity if we take the time to find out what’s behind it and how it serves us.” You can Access Daily Teachings from Dr. Demartini on Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn View interviews and videos from Dr. Demartini on YouTube & LiveStream and at www.drdemartini.com

#484: This week we’re talking about words to ban from your self-talk to remain free from anxiety. The words you speak become the house you live in. — Hafiz Language is the painter of our psychological experiences. If we think and talk hope, we will feel hope. But if our thoughts and dialogue are rooted in anxiety and fear, that is how we feel. We will feel anxious, we will behave anxiously and we will further grow anxiety because we are feeding it at the root. #480: Today we're talking about how our thoughts and feelings about anxiety affect the quality of our life. We'll be looking at the benefits of clearing resistance and resentment towards anxiety, and how that frees up our energy to start taking action steps toward feeling less anxious and more hopeful.   This Anxiety Slayer podcast is brought to you by New Beginnings: Daily Steps for Self-Acceptance and Peace of MindSave 30% for a limited time. Review the course at https://anxietyslayer.teachable.com/p/new-beginnings   Thoughts that keep us stuck in anxiety   Some thoughts we often hear are:    "I will never be free from panic attacks!"    "I know I'm stuck with this anxiety for life."   "I've tried everything and nothing works."     These are beliefs, not facts, and beliefs can be changed. Freedom from anxiety begins when we challenge those beliefs and look beyond them.    Breaking through the wall of anxiety When you see anxiety as an enemy or personalize it by saying you hate it, you are giving anxiety power over you.    It becomes something you have to fight, or you resent. Feeling this way about anxiety puts you in a victim mindset. You are feeding your anxiety and exhausting yourself.   We’ve all done it. It's the default setting of a suffering mind. You don't like how you feel, so you declare it. I hate this. I don't want to feel this way. But anxiety isn't personal. It's not listening and it's not going to back off and leave you alone - unless you make the choice to deal with it by taking action.     Two challenges for the anxious mind The mind tends to form grooves. Like an old record, our thoughts carve tracks that our mind falls in to and plays over and over again.   The mind also has a negativity bias, which means it's particularly drawn to unhelpful thoughts and beliefs and likes to replay them and ruminate on them.   This replaying makes the grooves of negative thought even deeper and difficult to escape, but we can, with determination and support.     Changing our mind is easier when it comes from our heart Changing the way you feel about your anxiety and switching your perspective to seeing it as an emotion, or a messenger that is trying to communicate something to you is a positive first step in regaining your power and sense of control over anxiety.   One way to do this is to ask yourself what would I love to do if I was free from anxiety?   When you practice looking for purpose and meaning in your life, anxiety becomes a hurdle between now and what you want to experience instead of a brick wall.   Using EFT Tapping to change unwanted thoughts  Tapping is a quick and effective way to change our unwanted beliefs and, in doing so, change your entire experience of anxiety from feeling trapped to feeling hope and finding freedom.   You can try it by yourself via a book or course or work with a practitioner for support and to make sure you cover all the aspects of the thoughts that are affecting you. #476: We’re covering five common causes of anxiety to be mindful of. Listen in to know the triggers to look out for and how to stop them from escalating your anxiety.   Points covered in this episode: OVERSTIMULATION Ayurveda (India’s ancient science of life) teaches that the over-stimulation of the nervous system is the leading underlying cause of anxiety. Too much incoming information overloads our nervous system. Social media, news, intense movies, noise, change. Many of us live with constant noise and visual stimulation, even when we’re in bed trying to sleep there may be the rumble of traffic or aircraft or some other noise – these things are agitating to our nervous systems, and our nervous system becomes overwhelmed and overtaxed, and then we start to experience anxiety. Ayurveda teaches that the mind is very sensitive and easily disturbed. That is true for all of us; it is the nature of the mind to be disturbed. Accepting that fact and knowing how to help the mind feel safe and calm is one of the great lessons of personal development. Find out about getting support for calming anxiety with an Ayurvedic lifestyle consultation with Ananga   CAFFEINE Caffeine is a primary culprit in provoking anxiety. Symptoms caused by caffeine include: sleep disturbance adrenal fatigue feeling wired, anxious, or shaky Coffee doesn’t give energy, it sets off a reaction in the body that provokes stress hormones to provide a burst of alertness. Caffeine jolts the body into flight or fight mode. Most relevant for Anxiety Slayer listeners to note is that caffeine can spark anxiety episodes because it can make us feel like we’re having an episode. The physical responses to caffeine can feel the same as the symptoms of anxiety. For example: increased heart rate feeling unsettled and restless sweating or trembling Look out for caffeine in over-the-counter medications, as well as in coffee and energy drinks.   LOOPING “WHAT IF” THOUGHTS When unwanted thoughts arise, they often trigger an anxiety story in our head - something we fear, something we want to avoid at all costs, but the mind gets hold of the thought and starts expanding it into anxious predictions and possible outcomes and we get dragged along for the ride. What helps? We need to be mindfully engaged in whatever we’re doing. Even if it’s chopping vegetables, washing dishes, taking a shower, whatever the activity is, we need to practice being present in the moment.   LACK OF ROUTINE (again from Ayurveda) Change can increase anxiety. Especially for the vata body type. We become unsettled and ungrounded when our days are disordered and erratic. What helps? Set yourself a daily routine and follow it as much as possible: Try and get up and go to bed at the same time each day Eat regular meals - this will also help keep your blood sugar steady Eat breakfast: Favor a warm nourishing breakfast like oatmeal made with almond milk with some chopped dates and cinnamon. Bring Warmth into your day: warm baths soft, warm bed   PRESSURE/EXPECTATIONS Practice replacing the need to be perfect and simply show up in your best light. Please stop being too hard on yourself What helps? Replace your expectations with invitations and intentions Self-compassion - Be gentle and loving with yourself   NEW COURSE! Anxiety Slayer First Responder Series: Social Anxiety Do you dread upcoming social events? #467: Shann had the pleasure of sharing a conversation with Steven C. Hayes PhD. about how to pivot toward what matters in your life.As we all know, life can sometimes throw us a curveball—or go full throttle and throw us straight towards rock bottom. And, the struggle stems from the problem-solving mind, which tells us to run from what causes us fear and hurt. However, Steven C. Hayes, author of A Liberated Mind encourages us to run towards that fear because what we may not realize is…we hurt where we care. As a struggler himself, Steven has pioneered a successful approach, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help those with mental health disorders feel fully, think freely, and live lives that reflect the qualities they choose. In his book, he reminds us that life is not a problem to be solved by showing us that we can live full and meaningful lives by embracing our vulnerability and turning towards what hurts. Steven is Nevada Foundation Professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada. An author of 38 books and more than 540 scientific articles, he has shown in his research how language and thought lead to human suffering and has developed “Acceptance and Commitment Therapy” a powerful therapy method that is useful in a wide variety of areas.

#429: Today we’ll be continuing our discussion about health anxiety and introducing our new First Responder Series Course for calming Health Anxiety and feeling more peace of mind.   Health Anxiety is the fear that something we feel in our body is a symptom of a serious illness. Once the fear kicks in, the mind quickly creates a story that escalates our anxiety into a stream of unwanted and disturbing thoughts.   Often the symptoms we worry about are the symptoms of anxiety itself. Other times we may fixate on body sensations that we fear might be something but are just random aches and pains.   Health Anxiety thoughts usually start with “what if..” What if thoughts are the result of a mind already troubled by anxiety creating future, fear-based events.   The key to overcoming Health Anxiety is to catch these thoughts and stop them spiraling out of control in our minds. To do that effectively we need tried and tested techniques. We need something that works to stop and calm anxious thoughts, and we need to know how to use it well.   And that is exactly what you’ll find in our new Anxiety Slayer First Responder Series for Anxiety Attacks.Explore New Course at anxietyslayer.teachable.com   The disturbed mind will look for evidence of what we fear the most.   Health anxiety prompts us to Google Symptoms and keep checking our bodies, or freezing and fixating on any feelings in our body we think are causes for concern.   Health Anxiety is the worst use of our imagination In a similar way to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the mind gets stuck on checking and searching. Repeatedly looking for evidence of symptoms of illness.   Health anxiety feels very personal as we fixate on one fear at a time. Often once one fear is relieved after a trip to the Doctor, we will move on to another. This shows that the source of our suffering is not a particular illness, but anxiety itself fixating on one thing and then the next.   Health anxiety puts us in an anxiety cycle that stresses our body   While we are worrying about our health, we aren't helping our health.   The First Responder Series Health Anxiety Course is designed to help you calm healthy anxiety and relax your body to support your body’s natural healing ability Two benefits Calm your health anxiety And help your body get into rest and repair mode   This is an EFT Tapping based course You will find two guided Tapping Sessions to help you calm health anxiety thoughts, and stop fear and fixation on body sensations   What you will learn: How to calm Health Anxiety thoughts   How to stop fixating on symptoms and sensations   How to use EFT Tapping for stopping Health Anxiety and building peace of mind   You will explore 4 key teachings on bringing the mind away from fear and into the present moment.   A calming breathing practice for slowing racing thoughts   A Body Scan Practice for feeling calm and safe in your body   And how to practice Ayurvedic oil massage for boosting immune health and peace of mind   How to switch from fight or flight to rest and repair mode    To overcome Health Anxiety, we need effective techniques for diverting and calming our anxious thoughts before they spiral out of control. We also need to know how to calm our reaction to perceived symptoms and feel relaxed and at home in our bodies.   Explore New Course Here   anxietyslayer.teachable.com

#416: Why autumn is the most challenging season for anxiety sufferers and how you can protect yourself and stay calm and grounded. According to Ayurveda Autumn is Vata season Autumn is the most challenging season for anxiety sufferers because it’s Vata season vata is one of the three body types of Ayurveda. Vata governs all movement in the mind and body. From the blinking of our eyes to the inhalation and exhalation of our breath, the movement of blood through our veins and the flow of our thoughts through our mind - vata is the governing principle for all movement. Read on for our tips on a Calm and Healy Autumn Get in step with the season When we live closer to nature we naturally adjust with the seasons. Harvesting apples, nuts, pumpkins and firewood are all part of the natural transition to Autumn. But we, in our heated homes and cars, tend to move through life in an artificial climate controlled mono-season. We do the same things and eat the same things all year round. According to Ayurveda, each season brings it's benefits and challenges and knowing them helps us keep in step with nature and take better care of our bodies and minds. Get outside and walk, stretch and breathe. Make as much of the daylight as you can as the nights draw in. When outside, be sure that you’re warm and keep your ears covered if the weather is windy. Things to Avoid in Autumn Season: Phase out cold foods: breakfast smoothies cold drinks (no ice) salads Avoid skipping meals or fasting Eat seasonal foods: The nuts, pumpkins, and squashes coming into season are rich with the properties that help us create a healthy Autumn. Baked apples with cloves and cinnamon are rich with vitamin C. Hot apple juice with ginger protects us from colds. Avoid late nights Make your evenings as relaxing as possible, stay away from screens and try and be in bed by 10pm. Eat regular nourishing meals Warm wet breakfasts are perfect for Autumn. Oatmeal with almond milk and cinnamon, or a date and almond shake made from soaked dates and hot almond milk blended together with warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. (Nutmeg is a natural sedative that calms the heart - so is a perfect addition for anxiety sufferers.) Other meals perfect for calming vata include baked potatoes or sweet potato with vegetable soup. Rice with steamed vegetables with warming spices like cumin and a splash of olive oil. Mung dal with rice. Vegetable stews. Warm, wet and slightly oily are the key words to remember for a vata-pacifying diet.

Corinne undertook her study of psychology out of necessity when debilitating anxiety threatened to derail her life. Seeking ways to do more than temporarily alleviate her symptoms, Corinne began to study A Course in Miracles (ACIM), mindfulness meditation, and the latest therapeutic approaches for treating anxiety.      As Corinne healed her own mental anguish, she created the perception-shifting process she describes in From Anxiety to Love: A Radical New Approach for Letting Go of Fear and Finding Lasting Peace (New World Library). Show Notes: You recently published From Anxiety to Love what inspired you to write this book? How has a course in miracles helped you heal mental anguish? You talk about freeing your mind from fear and the comfort that comes with connecting to our Inner Therapist. How do our listeners learn to listen to their inner therapist (love) vs. their inner critic? (ego) Many of our listeners suffer from Health Anxiety. How does releasing guilt and shame help calm our worries about our health? “The body will remain guilts messenger and will act as it directs, as long as you believe guilt is real.” - A Course in Miracles Affirmations: There is no guilt in me. There is no guilt in anyone else. There is only love. Get a copy of Corrine’s book, From Anxiety to Love where ever books are sold and at fromanxietytolove.com/book/

With over 4.6 million downloads and hundreds of podcasts, Anxiety Slayer is a podcast for anyone who is suffering from PTSD, panic attacks, stress, and anxiety.  Today we are sharing a conversation with Clinical Counselor and author Sharon Selby about how to empower children and teens to understand and overpower anxiety. Sharon is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and it’s her passion to support children, teens and families struggling with anxiety. For the last 20 years, she has accumulated over 10,000 clinical hours working with children and families experiencing diverse challenges and has a broad range of experience to draw upon. Sharon is also the author of Surfing the Worry Imp's Wave. An engaging and in-depth children’s book that teaches all about anxiety and how to overpower it. Our intention today is to give parents a lot of valuable content about how you can support your anxious child.  During our conversation, Sharon answers the following questions: 1. How can we help change our children’s negative thoughts which create anxiety? 2. Anxiety at school seems to be bigger than ever. Not only because of the class load, peer acceptance, and hormones but school shootings, suicide, and bullying. What can we do to support our kids when they feel the weight of the world on their shoulders?3.How can we tell if our child is introverted or socially anxious?4. What can parents expect from an anxious child? How far can they be pushed to move through their emotions? 5. In your experience, what is the best way we can dial into our teenagers to support them when they feel like as parents, “we just don’t get it”  It, being how they are feeling?   You can get in touch with Sharon at www.sharonselby.com and while you’re there, be sure to get Sharon’s free ebook: 8 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Your Child Is Anxious
