Las personas han sabido de los dinosaurios desde 1800. Desde entonces, las personas han querido aprender más. Sabemos sobre los dinosaurios porque hemos encontrado fósiles. Algunos fósiles son huesos, dientes y otras partes del cuerpo que se convirtieron en piedra. Otros fósiles son cosas como huellas, nidos y huevos. Los fósiles nos ayudan a aprender sobre los cuerpos y las vidas de los dinosaurios. ¿QUÉ CLASE DE ANIMAL? Los dinosaurios son miembros de un gran grupo de animales conocidos como reptiles. La mayoría de los reptiles de hoy tienen la piel seca y escamosa. Durante la época de los dinosaurios, no todos los reptiles tenían escamas. ¡Algunos tenían plumas! Los dinosaurios caminaban de forma diferente a los reptiles de hoy. Comparemos un lagarto con un dinosaurio. Las patas de los lagartos sobresalen por ambos lados de su cuerpo. Las piernas de los dinosaurios están debajo de su cuerpo. DONDE VIVÍAN LOS DINOSAURIOS Los dinosaurios vivieron en todos los continentes. Algunas especies de dinosaurios vivieron en muchos lugares diferentes. Otras especies vivían en solo unos pocos lugares. Cuando los dinosaurios estaban vivos, todos los continentes estaban más cerca. Era más fácil ir de un continente a otro. Los científicos que estudian a los dinosaurios se llaman paleontólogos. Han encontrado cientos de tipos de dinosaurios. Algunos dinosaurios son conocidos solo por unos pocos huesos. Para otros, la mayoría de sus huesos han sido encontrados. Los paleontólogos colocan a los dinosaurios en uno de dos grupos, basados en sus caderas. Los dinosaurios con caderas de lagarto tenían los huesos de la cadera como lagartos actuales. Sus patas delanteras eran diminutas. Nadie sabe para que las usaba T. rex. El T. rex tenía un cráneo grueso y pesado, su mordida era la más fuerte de cualquier animal terrestre que ha existido. Su boca estaba llena de dientes grandes. Sus dientes frontales eran para agarrar y jalar. Los dientes laterales rasgaban la carne, y los dientes posteriores cortaban la carne. El T. rex comía principalmente grandes dinosaurios herbívoros. Cazaba parte de su comida. También comía animales que ya estaban muertos. Se han encontrado más de cincuenta esqueletos de T. rex. El más grande está en exhibición en Chicago. El Velociraptor era otro carnívoro. Este dinosaurio era mucho más pequeño que el T. rex. Era diferente de otra manera también. ¡Tenía plumas! Sin embargo, sus brazos eran demasiado cortos para volar. Tenía una cola larga y una garra grande en cada pie trasero. El braquiosaurio tenía un cuello muy largo. Sus patas delanteras eran más largas que sus patas traseras. (Braquiosaurio significa "lagarto brazo") Este dinosaurio se alimentaba de hojas. Un Braquiosaurio adulto comía más de ochocientas libras de hojas por día. DINOSAURIOS CON CADERAS DE AVE El triceratops era un herbívoro con una enorme cabeza. Tenía tres cuernos y un collar "huesudo", o volante. Los cuernos crecían más a medida de que el dinosaurio envejecía.
