I am sad to tell you that Melanie's issues with chicken in general and thick chicken nuggets in particular continue, so we spend a good bit of time discussing her chicken-related options in this episode. We also talk about my family's recent trip to a show choir competition (it was glorious) as well as our excitement that college baseball is with us once again. Then, as usual, we share a little bit of what we're watching and reading, and we settle a miscommunication re: Melanie's feelings about a tote bag I've been eyeing. If I sound like I was desperate for her approval, it's because, well, I was.  I'm sure you understand. :-)  Enjoy, everybody! Become a Patron! We may not have watched the Oscars this year, but that doesn't stop us from having big opinions about 1) the dresses and 2) the current relationship status of Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak. In this episode we discuss both topics in great detail. We also talk about the fact that college baseball starts this weekend (!!!), and I dig into my thoughts about the State / A&M women's basketball game this past Sunday (here's a hint: both teams were fantastic). It will not surprise you to learn that Melanie shares some beauty product updates (she is breathing, after all), and she has also discovered a new serum she can't wait to try. Her skin care persistence is both inspiring and admirable. Enjoy, y'all. Become a Patron! We'd love for you to subscribe on iTunes, and we'd be honored if you'd leave us a review. Well, both of us recently watched "Miss Americana" - the Taylor Swift documentary on Netflix - and man-oh-man did we ever have some thoughts about it. We share about 278 of those thoughts in this episode. We also discuss some upcoming pop culture events we're excited about (to be clear, I didn't realize when we recorded that the Hamilton movie doesn't come out until 2021, so please know the realization that I have to wait OVER A YEAR has been borderline heartbreaking). There are some beauty product developments as well - and news about what may well be the finest mascara we have ever tried. Yes. You read that correctly. THE BEST MASCARA WE HAVE EVER TRIED. Now that I think about it, it might have been a good idea to call this episode WELL WE HAVE WATCHED SOME THINGS. We talk about Broadway shows and TV shows and why I might have watched the recent two-part Garth Brooks Biography special four-ish times. Plus, Melanie has some very strong feelings indeed about Marriage Story - and we both have very strong feelings about Jennifer Aniston's wardrobe in The Morning Show. We also discuss a game we have both been obsessively playing on our phones - and we share some recent beauty favorites, too. So basically it's a fine time indeed on ye olde podcast. Enjoy, everybody! Melanie has a bit of a cold on this episode, which means you may start to wonder when I started recording a podcast with the ghost of Barry White. OH, I KID. And listen - are we all ever glad that Melanie toughed it out and recorded the episode despite her upper respiratory challenges, because she comes in strong with an update on 1) the raccoons that live next door to her and 2) the latest Royal Family news. We are in her debt. We also discuss a couple of things we've cooked (and enjoyed) lately, and we share our thoughts about Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Well, if you have dreamed of an in-depth weigh-in on the current Royal Family shenanigans, this may be the episode you've been waiting for. Suffice it to say that Melanie has some thoughts, and oh, has she ever done her research. We also discuss our new favorite Netflix show, and I don't mean to brag, but I'm pretty sure I PR'd in terms of viewing time. You'll be happy to know that I blazed through those six episodes like a champion. We also talk about our friend Travis' FANTASTIC new album called Spirit Rise (Melanie and I both adore it) as well as our realization that we don't really care about awards shows anymore. Today we found out that Mike Leach is the new head football coach at my beloved Mississippi State University. Needless to say, Melanie and I needed to talk about it. You will not be surprised to learn that on our first episode of 2020, we talk about college football. Specifically, we dig into the Mississippi State coaching search and the wonder of Joe Burrow. We also discuss what we did for fun / relaxation over the holidays (here's a hint: TV), and I break down round two of trying out my Instant Pot. Also, Melanie shares her preferences re: Chick-fil-A nuggets (OH, SHE HAS THOUGHTS) and her resolution about chicken for the new year. Because didn't we all make a resolution about chicken? This is our last regular episode of 2019 (still more goodness to come this Sunday over on Patreon, though), and man oh man do we have ourselves some laughs. From how much we love Lane Kiffin's Twitter to the motivational speeches that we give our kids to our rage when people back into parking places (THE NERVE, I TELL YOU), it is good times aplenty on episode 165. We also do a little reflecting on this past decade (so many changes!), and I share a v.v. important mascara tip that our friend Marti in Charlotte was kind enough to pass along for the good of the group. Plus, Melanie has a Netflix recommendation. So basically it's a win all the way around, and MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERY ONE. Enjoy, y'all! Become a Patron! It may not have been a banner football year for A&M and State, but that hasn't done much to diminish our collective BigBoo college football enthusiasm. Given that, you won't be surprised to hear us spend some time talking about last weekend's SEC Championship game as well as Ole Miss' recent head coaching hire. We realize that it might not be the expected reaction, but this Bulldog / Aggie combo is excited about Lane Kiffin's return to the SEC. I think you could even say that we are HERE FOR IT. We also discuss what we love about Chipotle (yes. Chipotle.) along with our thoughts about cooked chicken. And if that weren't enough, Melanie has a new moisturizer to share with the group, not to mention that we have some general enthusiasm about the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as Nichole Nordeman's new Christmas album. Well, as you might imagine, we spend some time on this episode talking about this past weekend's Egg Bowl, which was as classic a State / Ole Miss match-up as I've ever seen. We also discuss the Iron Bowl, and you'd better believe we talk about the folks who found themselves imprisoned by the hedges at Jordan-Hare Stadium because that whole thing was nothing but a treasure.  There's more to this episode than college football, though. We also talk about movies and mascara (people surprised by this = 0 people). Plus, Melanie makes a case for why we all need to be adding eyelash serums to our beauty routines. I will commit to pray about it. Enjoy, y'all! Become a Patron! We'd love for you to subscribe on iTunes, and we'd be honored if you'd leave us a review. Here's part two of our Christmas Gift Guide, and this round of gift suggestions is for women and men. Coming up with ideas for women was pretty easy, but when it came to presents for guys, I really tried to 1) think about what David and Alex might enjoy and 2) think like Perry and consider the life-giving value of effective illumination. I hope he'll be pleased. You might be shocked to learn (eye roll) that there's some weird scratchy noise that appears from time to time in this episode, but we could not figure out what it was. Melanie wasn't in the bean bag chair, her hair was pulled back, and she wasn't wearing bracelets (there was a point when I was convinced the noise was bracelets). However, the up side is that her internet connection was flawless, so we'll take our victories where we can. You can find all the links in the show notes below (there are affiliate links, just FYI), and we hope these ideas are helpful. So true story: we spend the first ten minutes of this episode talking about the raccoon that was in Melanie's chimney. I feel like I may never get to write a sentence like that again. Anyway, we talk about the raccoon, and we talk about Melanie and Caroline's recent trip to College Station. We also discuss the latest with my bathroom remodel, the latest with college football, and the latest with some coaches we have grown to admire over the years - complete with a Tender Hallmark Moment (TM) about Why Coaches Matter (and man oh man - do they ever matter). In this episode we talk way more about high school football than college (no joke: this past Friday night was the most exciting high school football game of my adult life), and I'm so happy that we were able to actually have a podcast conversation about high school football, because that means Melanie's internet connection is working again. May the Lord be praised. We also talk about some stuff that has happened on the internets over the course of the last week, the problem with the countertop on Melanie's island, Melanie's recent test drive of a hydro-facial, and some make-up that we have recently tried and enjoyed. The Bulldogs and the Aggies didn't have an easy time of it this past weekend, but don't you worry: Melanie and I still have big fun recapping what we love about the LSU Tigers and analyzing the greatness of Nick Saban. We also discuss a recent situation where I was told I have angled cuticles, and yes, I realize that might be the strangest declaration I have made to date via this podcast. In the second half of this episode we were absolutely plagued by disconnection problems, but the bright side of that is that we discovered the root of all of our sound issues. We appreciate your patience as you have had no choice but to join us on this perilous audio journey. We also talk about a couple of products I've tried and enjoyed, and then we pretty much give up on being able to record anything else. Listen. When Melanie and I started recording this episode, I was in a big ole post-birthday, post-Homecoming, please-someone-make-the-news-cycle-slightly-less-exhausting funk. Plus, we had eleventy hundred sound issues when we started trying to record, so in retrospect maybe I should have just called it a day and taken a 16-hour nap. However, as it always tends to do, talking to Melanie eventually turned my frown upside down. I think it's the combination of hearing her talk about when lightning struck near their house and how the barista situation is going at C's school and her challenges at their recent family dove hunt and her glorious new mattress topper and the apparently bottomless pit that is contributing to a teenager's checking account. So all that to say: funny friends are difference-makers, and aren't we all so grateful for that? Enjoy, y'all! This past Saturday was a tough one for both of us football-wise (though to the Aggies' credit, they were victorious over the Razorbacks), so as you can imagine, we do some post-game processing on this episode. We also break down some of the better parts of our weekend and discuss why tile selection should be a required exercise for all couples in their pre-marital counseling. Finally. You will be zero percent surprised to learn that there was a point where I accidentally stopped recording, which meant that poor Melanie had to listen to me tell a story for the second time, and then there were a couple of times where we had to step away from the computer for a minute or so for Very Urgent Matters of Great Urgency. So all that to say: we're just here to be as professional as possible. As always. Enjoy, y'all! Become a Patron! We also talk about the difficulty of persuading our eyes to wake up in the mornings, along with some potions and salves that are bringing Melanie some real hope. We didn't have what I would call a *hard* outline when we started recording this episode, but oh my goodness we had us some laughs. We talk about Caroline's first day of 11th grade and the fact that her school now has a coffee bar, we break down some of our thoughts about Southern Charm, and we get very tickled talking about Melanie's potential plans when it comes to cosmetic procedures. We also discuss communication strategies with teenagers and some of our menu options now that our kids are back in school. You might notice that Melanie's hair brushes against the microphone a lot in this episode (we've since talked about it and secured a supply of hair ties for the next time we record), but all is forgiven because when we talk about skincare she makes up an entirely new word and uses it with authority. My phone was across the room, my FitBit was across the room, and I can't think of anything that might have been causing the problem. So the solution? PRETEND LIKE IT'S NOT HAPPENING. And while you're pretending, you can hear us talk about our favorite vegetables, Melanie's recent family trip, and my issues with eyeshadow. What's not to love? Please do enjoy. Become a Patron! We kick off this episode with some awe and maybe a tiny bit of lamenting that our kids are officially licensed drivers, which is totally surreal but at least gives us opportunities to watch them swing and catch their keys a lot while they contemplate where they'd like to go next. As teenagers do. We also talk about a few books I've read lately, some books Melanie is about to read, and some shows that have grabbed our attention. We have a lengthy discussion about this last season of The Real Housewives of New York City, and all I know to say about that is please don't judge us for having such sophisticated television taste. Last thing: at the end of this episode there's a clip of this month's Patreon Q&A, and if you haven't joined us on Patreon yet, well, come on over. The first bonus episode will be out on Friday, August 9th. The Q&A, which is the second bonus episode, will be out on Monday, August 20th. Happy 148, everybody! Hope y'all enjoy. Become a Patron! This episode is topical whiplash in podcast form. We talk about Melanie's new phone, our personal notification preferences, and an unexpected skunk attack. We also cover the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, the lure of Free People jeans, and the (surprisingly?) cutthroat nature of a fishing tournament. It's a big ole hodgepodge around here. Please do enjoy. Well, I might as well go ahead and tell you that my sound is weird on this episode. Surely you aren't surprised. And if nothing else it will be a nice throwback to Wolfman Jack's studio circa 1974. By the way, you get all sorts of bonus points if you're up to speed on that Wolfman Jack reference. Regardless of sound ish-ahs (for when-oh-when have those ever stopped us?), on this episode we recap our recent trip to Oklahoma and talk for a really long time about all the food we ate while we were there. It's sort of like listening to Bubba Gump talk about all the varieties of shrimp except we didn't actually eat any shrimp. We eventually work our way around to a brief discussion of Southern Charm as well as my thoughts about Spindrift Orange Mango sparkling water. It's all very thrilling. This episode will also bring you one of the very best Melanie comments ever. In fact, it might be my favorite: "I so enjoy just eating hot versions of cheese." Please do enjoy. Not to be overly WOMP WOMP, but the first part of this episode is about as low-key as you'll ever hear us. That's because about 17-ish minutes after we started recording, we lost our connection, and the files with our audio disappeared right before our eyes. This is where we would love to blame the website we use to record, but the truth is we don't have any way of knowing exactly what happened. We just thought that our enthusiastic discussion about the InstantPot was lost in an internet graveyard forever. So. We tried our best to rebound as we started recording all over again. It's safe to say we were weary. BUT WAIT! Our sad tale has a redemptive arc! After I started editing the WOMP WOMP part of the episode, I opened the website where we record. It was a fit of optimism, but I thought maybe - MAYBE - the audio would be there. And do you know what? IT WAS. So you'll hear Discouraged Us for the first 40-ish minutes, but then you'll hear Upbeat Us for the last 15 or so minutes, and DIDN'T THAT ALL WORK OUT AT LEAST SORT OF? Hope y'all enjoy. Our schedules haven't been super cooperative this week (painters! dogs! World Cup soccer!), so we were delighted to finally get to play a little podcast catch-up. We talk about the joys of car insurance costs for teenagers, the inspirational qualities of a Kardashian's refrigerator, our "Sunrise, Sunset" feelings about the pool, and our annoying ability to ignore problems we'd rather not address and/or solve. We also discuss a clothing consignment option that has been a fantastic new discovery, and I discuss that in what is certainly far too much detail. As I tend to do. Hope y'all enjoy! So. Third time's the charm? Maybe? We initially tried to record this episode a week ago, but my router got disconnected when we had painters at my house and, alas, there was no internet. Then we recorded about four days ago, but something happened to the audio on Melanie's end, and alas, there was nothing to edit. So today, once again, we attempted to record episode 143. We think we did it this time, so let this episode be a testimony to the Lord's strength in our weakness. :-) We talk about the College World Series (#HailState), a fun lunch I had at my house last week, and five things we're really enjoying this summer. Well, actually for me it was six things I'm enjoying this summer. I had a hard time narrowing down my list. Well, if college baseball isn't your favorite topic, don't worry - because there's a point in this episode where we talk for over five minutes about what is causing the rustling noise in or around Melanie's microphone. It's every bit as riveting as you might imagine. We also talk about Real Housewives, a new Netflix movie we enjoyed, our kids' summertime activities, and an ill-fated trial run with Snapchat. Well, it's finally SEC Baseball Tournament Week, but the excitement of the most well-run sporting event in America didn't stop us from recording a new episode (probably no one is more surprised by that than we are). As you might imagine, Melanie discusses a new addition to her skin care routine - and we recap several of the shows we've seen lately because apparently we have been watching a LOT of television to cope with the craziness of May. We also express our (maybe) irrational frustrations with change, and when I say "change," I mean "coins." Finally, you'll be delighted to know that we weigh in on the Game of Thrones finale even though neither of us has ever watched a single episode of the series. Well, we start off as Mamaw and MeMaw this week, here to tell you all about our failing eyesight, but eventually we return to some of our favorite topics: kids' activities, college baseball (at the time we recorded Mississippi State and A&M were about to play a weekend series), and the most wonderful sporting event of the year, the SEC Baseball Tournament. We also talk about why we've avoided any sort of discussion about the current state of the Royal Family (stay tuned for a discussion about preciouslittleangel Archie sometime next week). Finally, we dig into whether Taylor Swift was inspired by Beyonce' or if she borrowed from Beyonce' - and then we go on and on about our very favorite sunscreen. So you might say that we cover some content bases. Enjoy, y'all! We kick off this episode talking about pillows (yes. pillows.), then hear about Melanie and P's recent weekend of attending polo matches. AS YOU DO.  We also talk about one of my favorite nights of watching lacrosse and speculate about what it might be like when our kids graduate and we don't have the sports any more. Our conclusion is that we need to prepare ourselves for all the sadness. Finally, we talk to our friend Lincee Ray about her new book that comes out April 30th - and we spend a significant amount of time talking about the ways we used to fold our notes in high school. A few days ago we asked the good people of Instagram if anyone had questions for us. And as it turned out, there were questions APLENTY. We spend the bulk of this episode digging into six or seven of those questions, which means we dig into the story of how we met, the reason only one of us records our ads, and the restaurants we love the mostest in Birmingham and San Antonio (also known as the cities where we live). We also talk about what Melanie means (exactly) when she references "the ranch," and we tackle the question we get asked almost more than any other (besides how we met): what about that one-child situation? We laugh a lot, we answer lo, even more questions, and we recap (well, Mel does, at least) the latest with Britney Spears. Just as you might expect. As always, please do enjoy. We also talk about the impressive amount of media we've consumed (no need to judge, everyone) as well as an exciting retail discovery that could very well CHANGE OUR WHOLE LIVES. On this episode we rehash the Hudson family Spring Break shenanigans, we celebrate the fact that Melanie has finished writing her latest book, and we talk about (another!) new TV show that Melanie and Perry are watching. So once again the sound for me (Sophie) is horrible, so I am picking up on the subtle hint that perhaps I need a new microphone. WHY ARE YOU SURPRISED. But actually I don't need a new microphone because sound is fine on ads, just not when Melanie and I record. I don't even understand. WHO AMONG THEE IS TECH-Y? Subpar audio aside, we thoroughly enjoyed catching up in this episode. We talk about college baseball, Melanie's newfound career as a stencil artist, Alex's 16th birthday, and How Is It Possible That Our Kids Are About To Drive. We also discuss an exciting (for Mel) new skincare option and how we're both a little socially awkward right now. All that to say: good times aplenty. Hope y'all enjoy! Full disclosure: the sound isn't great on this episode - it cuts in and out a lot and who could possibly know why because we do everything the same way every single time but for some reason this time I (Sophie) sound like a gravelly-voiced DJ from the 70s and WHATEVER, STUPID MICROPHONE - but despite the subpar sound, we had ourselves some fun. We discuss our deep lack of understanding re: taxes, we chronicle all the reasons we aren't cooking, and we discuss a couple of things we're really loving on Netflix. Melanie also outlines some new decorative goals for Caroline's room, and we discuss our favorite means of social media procrastination when we're writing as well as our suggestions for better, more meaningful social media experiences. We have such a treat for y'all in the first half of this episode: a visit with our dear friend Erin Moon, who regularly brightens our days on Instagram and on The Bible Binge podcast. Erin and I share an obsession related to one of our very favorite musicians, and it seemed like a good idea to have her on the podcast and hash that thing out for posterity. The second half of this episode is a little bit of a catch-up for Melanie and me; we talk about some music I'm loving and a recipe from Melanie's friend Kim that has changed Alex Hudson's life forever. Melanie also shares her reactions to the Fyre documentary we talked about on the last episode, and she coins a new word that we are sure to hold close in our hearts forever. Hope y'all enjoy! This is the second part of the conversation we started on episode 130, and I have to say that this part is really of no substance at all (but oh, did we have fun). We talk about a new product Melanie loves, an old product Melanie loves again, and my recent descent into a YouTube rabbit hole. We also discuss the books we're working on and actually settle on a title for mine even though we can't say a whole lot about it. So there's some mild vague-ery - but there are also laughs aplenty. Well, as we often do, we spend a lot of time in this episode talking about our recent experiences in the wild and also the nature. Okay. So it's not necessarily our norm. But we definitely discuss our somewhat out-of-the-ordinary weekend excursions. We also talk about some things we've watched and liked, some pants with which I am SMITTEN, and so very, very, very many sneakers - sneakers we like, sneakers we think we might like, and sneakers we appreciate though we would not wear them. It's our first episode of 2019, and in it we certainly enjoy our fair share of pontificating: about age, about Christmas traditions (CAREFUL IF YOUR SMALL CHILDREN ARE LISTENING), about Melanie's exciting new ice option, and about the National Championship game. We also talk about Melanie's repeat viewing of Friday Night Lights, hear her reaction to Tidying Up, and dig into ALL MY MANY THOUGHTS about Surviving R. Kelly (seriously - if talking about trauma is difficult for you, you'll want to skip this part of the episode). Finally, we come back around to some sunshine and break down a few of the reasons we loved (loved!) Mary Poppins Returns. So. There's some silly stuff. There's some serious stuff. Real life has been FULL SPEED AHEAD the last few weeks; between traveling and speaking stuff and keeping up with our people, there hasn't been a lot of time for podcasting. So, this episode is part one of our Official Late November / Early December Catch-up. We talk about my most recent shopping trip with Martha, our respective Thanksgivings, and of course, our Bulldogs and our Aggies. Because I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but my Bulldogs won the Egg Bowl 35-3. And - just a guess - you're probably very aware that Melanie's Aggies beat LSU in a game FOR THE AGES, a seven overtime thriller in College Station. We had the best time rounding up ideas, and in this first installment, we focus on hostess gift options as well as gifts for teenage girls and guys. This means that I use my teenage girl voice at least four too many times. Anyway, we hope our suggestions are helpful (and fun!) (and also significantly reduce your shopping stress). As always, you can find links to everything in the show notes. Except for the rosemary tree from Lowe's and anything from Trader Joe's. Because Trader Joe's online shopping options = sad trombone. Be on the lookout for installment #2 (gifts for men and women) early next week. Enjoy, y'all! It took us three tries to get this episode going; we had a little recording trouble with the site we normally use, so then we had to switch over to Skype and blah blah blah we're the Bad News Bears of podcasting. Hi, welcome to the podcast, now watch us get hit in the chest by a fly ball. Or maybe a microphone. Eventually, though, we found us a work-around, and we settled in for a nice, long chat about all manner of things: the State / Bama game, Melanie's recent trip to Marshall, Texas, upcoming speaking stuff, and an update on the Camellia boots. We also discuss the struggle of my current no-shopping resolution and a few things that have inspired the fire out of me lately. And finally, we break down our friend Jamie Golden's recent skincare product recommendations that she shared on Instagram. It's safe to say that she shared what most would consider a wealth of knowledge, and we are grateful. Enjoy, y'all! In this episode there is a very strange crackle-y noise that occurs randomly but consistently, and we have no idea what it is. I suggested to Melanie at one point that it was castanets, but clearly I was being sarcastic because as you all know we only play our castanets during the summer months. I don't even know what that means. Anyway, if you can will yourself to hang in there during all the clicking / crackling, you'll hear us talk about the Mississippi State / A&M game, one of my most confident parenting moments, and Melanie's new beauty routine that involves cloth surgical tape.  Y'all have no idea. It DELIGHTS me. Hope you enjoy! - Nick Fitzgerald's last touchdown against A&M - Sam Edelman Camellia boots (Melanie's jubilee!) - Syla sleep band - cloth surgical tape - Aveeno Positively Radiant Overnight Hydrating Facial Moisturizer - QB1: Beyond the Lights - Closing Song Sponsors: - FabFitFun (promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box - and the fall box really is FAB) - Prep Dish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 weeks free) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for $20 off your contacts)

On this episode we talk about college football - specifically, the Bulldogs' misfortunes against LSU and the upcoming MSU / A&M match-up. We also discuss Harry and Meghan's baby news - along with their Australia trip.  Besides that? Oh, just a couple of new strategies from Melanie in terms of fighting her sleep lines, and some serious over-thinking / over-emoting from Sophie in terms of how fast time seems to move these days.  As the kids would say, we get all up in our feelings.  You know who else would say that? BRIAN CHALMERS. Hope y'all enjoy! - Brian Chalmers' latest (thanks, @JennyDawnTX) - SEC Shorts - SEC teams get their mid-season report cards - QB1: Beyond the Lights (it's FANTASTIC) - Jake Fromm's Twitter - The Good Place - The Syla - The Slip silk pillowcase - Meghan and Harry's Australia trip - The "portrait" in the glass carriage - Closing Song Sponsors: - care of (promo code BIGBOO for 25% off your first month of personalized care of vitamins) - RXBAR (promo code BIGBOO for 25% off their family pack)

Well, if you have ever wanted to hear Melanie and me speculate about the source of a dog's cough, this is the episode for you. We also talk about college football, the relentless heat of early October, and our inability to keep up with teenagers' trends despite our best efforts. Parenting. It is humbling. Finally, we discuss the mystery of free radicals, and Melanie shares some exciting pajama leggings news. There's a point in every college football season (at least for Aggies and Bulldogs) when disappointment, at least for a few minutes, obscures hope. Melanie and I found ourselves re-acquainted with some disappointment this past weekend, which definitely wasn't what we dreamed it would be. We break down all those feelings on this episode - along with continued analysis of targeting calls and the increasingly lose interpretation of roughing the passer. We also talk about the realities of traveling out of town for a speaking engagement, the joys of high school football games, and our practices regarding one-star book reviews. Also: books and fall fashion finds! Please do enjoy. - How to Tackle a Quarterback 2018 - The evolution of roughing the passer - My Oxford Year by Julia Whelan (just FYI, friends - this is not a book about a covenant relationship) - This Must Be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell - Universal Thread Lanae scrunch boots - Abercrombie textured open front cardigan - George Men's Short Sleeve Elongated Slub Hoodie - Closing Song Sponsors: - Prep Dish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 weeks free) - Poshmark (get the app and use the promo code BIGBOO for $5 off your first order) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for $20 off your first order) - FabFitFun (promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box - and the fall box really is FAB!)

Since Melanie and I went to Chicago last weekend, this episode seemed like a great opportunity to recap our trip. We talk about our unforeseen hotel challenges, our night at Hamilton, and our many, many laughs at The Popcast Live. We also discuss college football at great length - and ponder the dynamics of sliding into someone's social media comments with your team's catchphrase. Also, you will not be surprised to know that Melanie has a LOT of thoughts about Aggie football in general and Jimbo Fisher in particular. Hope y'all enjoy! Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - An update on the Chicago Hotel Workers strike - Regina Phalange - Hamilton (Melanie is now a fan!) - The Popcast Live - When Melanie found out that A&M pulled within two points at the end of the Clemson game Closing Song Sponsors: - Prep Dish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 free weeks) - Poshmark (get the app and use promo code BIGBOO for $5 off your first order) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for $20 off your first order) - care/of (promo code BIGBOO for 25% off your first order)

Well, you will not be surprised to learn that we talk a great deal - A GREAT DEAL - about college football in this episode. There's some accountability in terms of how one of us managed to go to Starkville this past weekend despite some seemingly overwhelming writing obligations, there's all manner of optimism since the Aggies and the Bulldogs combined to score over 100 points in their first games, and then there's the can't-deny-it reality that the SEC West is NO JOKE in 2018. We also discuss books and shows and our upcoming trip to Chicago. Which reminds me: we even tell you how to win two free tickets to The Popcast Live Show (this Saturday, September 8th), but HURRY - you have to leave a comment on our podcast Facebook page by 10AM central on Thursday, September 6th in order to be in the drawing. As you (might) know, I'm working with a different computer these days, and somewhere in this new-to-me version of Garage Band (which is what I use to edit) I have somehow changed myself to a setting that is likely called "DJ From The 1970s." Melanie sounds quite normal, but I have an echo that will take you straight to the disco, and I have no idea how to fix it. I just know that it makes me sound like I recorded my part of the episode in a tiled bathroom. WELCOME TO EXCELLENCE, everyone. Despite the reverb, though, we plow our way through some topics. We talk about the heat (what? you're surprised?), we talk about SEC football, we talk about recent annoyances, and we delve into some strong feelings that we didn't even know we had. Please do enjoy. Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - Sophie's car on the way to senior retreat - Mississippi State players learning the fight song - 10 things you might not know about Alabama Coach Nick Saban - Stonewall Kitchen Apple Grille Sauce - Spinach & Ricotta Bake - Closing Song SPONSORS: - KIND Kids Bars (promo code BOOCAST for 20% off your first order) - PrepDish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 weeks free) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for 20% off your first order)

It's been a couple of weeks, so Melanie and I play catch-up in this episode. We talk about a unique challenge I'm facing this weekend, the technological heartbreak of late last week, and why a pep talk from other writers is a very sweet thing indeed. We also talk about the launch of Melanie's new book, Fearless Faith, and discuss this fall's fashion trends (or lack thereof). We also mourn the continued elusiveness of Melanie's much-desired Sam Edelman Camellia boots, so we trust you'll remember her in your prayers. Enjoy, y'all! - Fearless Faith - Melanie's brand-new devotional book for girls - Universal Studios (one of Sophie's favorite places on earth) - Hamilton Chicago - The Popcast Live in Chicago with Knox and Jamie (come see us!) - Erin Moon's tabbed Hamilton spreadsheet - BP Brice Notched Bootie - Closing Song Sponsors: - PrepDish - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO for $20 off your first order) - Casper (promo code BIGBOO for $50 off select mattresses)

Well, our good friend Travis Cottrell is back with us this week, and oh, do we have a fine time. However, since y'all know how we like to pride ourselves on technological excellence, you might as well be aware that apparently my microphone wasn't completely plugged in for this episode. So be forewarned that I sound considerably more tin-ny than normal. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED, however, because Melanie and Travis managed to get their microphones connected and it all works out fine in the end. On this episode we talk about our sleeping preferences (pillows, comforter weight, side of bed, etc.) and prove once and for all that Melanie and I are not low-maintenance individuals. Melanie also shares her surefire method for hacking hotel thermostats, and my enthusiasm for this bit of information probably reveals more about me than I'd like. We also answer more of your questions and cover a whole lot of conversational ground (you have never seen three people agonize more over their hypothetical guests to a hypothetical dinner party than we do). Plus, Neil Diamond shows up. Please do enjoy. Our good friend Travis Cottrell is with us on this episode, and we have ourselves a blast. We talk about workout needs of extroverts vs. introverts, we hear about Travis' recent regional airline experience, and we answer a bunch of fun questions that people asked on Instagram. Also, please excuse the many phone alerts / dings / beeps that occur in the first part of the episode. We didn't get our phones under control before we started to record, so it takes a few minutes for all three of us to SILENCIO LOS TELEFONOS. We trust this is the level of professionalism to which you've grown accustomed.  Enjoy, y'all! - 9 Round - Wunderlist app - Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt (Melanie's favorite) - Jo Malone London Lime Basil & Mandarin (Sophie's favorite) - CKOne - Samsara   - Angela Cottrell on Twitter - Angela Cottrell on Instagram - Jennifer Garner on Instagram SPONSORS: - KIND Kids' Bars (promo code BOOCAST for 20% off your order). All righty, y'all - this is our Very Special Southern Charm Finale Re-cap. We talk about so many things: Craig, Kathryn & Shep, white tie attire, Patricia's pet caftans, Chelsea & Austen, and last but not least - the train wreck that is Ashley and Thomas. WE HAVE SOME THOUGHTS. And then, after we wrap up our Southern Charm discussion, we talk about several other shows we're watching and enjoying / pondering. Yay for TV! Enjoy, y'all! - Southern Charm - Patricia's pet caftans - The Bachelorette - The Proposal - The Entire Real Housewives Franchise (the guiltiest of guilty TV pleasures) - The Staircase (this is a true crime documentary - not for kids - difficult to watch in parts) - Life Sentence - Get Me Roger Stone (there's bad language - but an interesting, if disheartening, look at political campaign strategy) - I Am Not Your Guru (there's bad language - but fascinating from the perspective of people in search of emotional / spiritual freedom through self-help) - The Handmaid's Tale (read up on this one before you watch...because of the subject matter it is not for everyone and definitely not for kids or young teenagers) - Closing Song 1 and Closing Song 2 Sponsors: - FabFitFun (use promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box) - Casper (use promo code BIGBOO for $50 off select mattresses; terms & conditions apply) - PrepDish (use promo code BIGBOO for 2 free weeks!)

On this episode we talk about my unusually quiet house, the latest on Southern Charm, and a couple of Netflix movies that have renewed Melanie's faith in the romantic comedy. We also continue with the questions we didn't finish last week, and as it turns out, we talk a lot - A LOT - about parenting stuff (teenagers in general, only children in particular). You'll also hear all of my (Sophie's) geeky thoughts about The Fourth Estate as well as some podcasts I'm enjoying. Let it be acknowledged that we do not discuss a single item of clothing or a single beauty product on this episode. Somebody call the medics. Enjoy, y'all! A few days ago some of the folks on our Big Boo Facebook page were kind enough to leave comments with some questions / topics that they wanted us to discuss, so that is exactly what Melanie and I do on this episode. We picked seven to start with, and my goodness: WE HAVE SOME THOUGHTS. I actually couldn't fit all of the answers into one episode (you'll hear the rest next week), but we cover a lot of territory when it comes to grief, friendships, writing, and whether or not we enjoy crafts (we'll take "NO" for $400, Alex). This episode is maybe a little extra personal, but we loved getting to talk about this stuff. Hope y'all enjoy! Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - "Old Friends" by Ben Rector (we don't mention it specifically - but it's fitting considering what we say about friendship) - Melanie's friend Jen - Sophie's mama - "Caroline's" shoe box Fiesta floats - Carpool Karaoke with Paul McCartney (we don't talk about this at all, but it's so heartwarming and will totally brighten your day) - Closing Song - Our new Big Boo Cast t-shirts from Milk and Honey Tees! In what is no doubt the complete opposite of a surprise, we had some sound issues with this one. We still don't know exactly why. What we do know, though, is that I sound like a loud talker and Melanie sounds like a soft talker who is trying to subtly communicate to me that I need to PIPE DOWN. So thanks in advance for bearing with us; we'll do our best to get that worked out for next time. As for what we talk about, well, there's a lot: college baseball (Mississippi State is headed to the College World Series!), a new show Melanie really likes, famous people we follow on Instagram, some new music I'm excited about, and a few new skincare / make-up finds. So basically, you know, some of our favorite topics. Hope y'all enjoy! We also chronicle some of our current, um, hormone-adjacent frustrations, recap what's happened for our teams so far in the college baseball post-season, and discuss some of our summer reading plans. Plus, Melanie brings us all up-to-speed on some highlights from The Bachelorette - and in doing so improves the quality of all our lives. Hope y'all enjoy! We spend considerable time on this episode breaking down all the fun we had at The Popcast Live! Show (Melanie) and The Happy Hour Live (Sophie), and then somehow we manage to segue into a discussion about McDonald's chicken options, a topic that we feel certain we have never before covered. We also (apparently) have A LOT OF THOUGHTS about this season of Southern Charm. So whether you watch or not, you're going to get yourself a little bit of a Southern Charm education. And even if reality television isn't your thing, never fear, because this is the episode where Melanie recounts a magical encounter she once had with a McGriddle, and let me just assure you that we'll all be better for it. You'll be delighted (or not) to know that on this episode of the podcast we first discuss our respective struggles with our ongoing coughs. This is due to our combined age of 402. We also talk maybe a little too enthusiastically about the new royal baby (WE HAVE SOME THEORIES) before we spend some time revisiting Hazel's ACL situation. We also continue our pop culture discussion and dig into some exciting new beauty products that Melanie has tried (or is planning to try). As an added bonus, you will hear me grow increasingly hoarse over the course of the episode because we are all about that real upper respiratory infection life, y'all. Hope you enjoy! We kick off this episode with an update on Hazel (as Sophie's mama would have said: "God love her") and then segue' into a discussion about our new favorite clothing store that we had almost forgotten about (credit to Melanie, of course, for the re-discovery). Then, like we threatened to do on the last couple of episodes, we talk about some of the pop culture influences that we loved when we were younger. Also. It probably goes without saying that we don't know what to think about our current level of podcast productivity. We would like to think that we'll continue to be consistent and won't take a random two-month break at some point, but, well, you know us. So it's probably wise for all of us to keep our expectations in check. Hope y'all enjoy episode 102! Some of you may know that Mississippi State lost the NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship thanks to an incredible last-second shot by Notre Dame, so in the first part of episode 101, Melanie and I take some time to walk through some of the post-game emotions I felt last week in Columbus, OH. We also talk about our spring fashion frustrations, and I may or may not have called a cold-shoulder top the mullet of shirts (I don't know that my assessment is original, but I can assure you that it is heartfelt). The most exciting news on this episode is that Melanie's new devotional book, Everyday Holy, comes out on Tuesday, April 10th, and IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL. See? It is lovely. Anyway, we talk through the writing process for a devotional book and get a little nerdy about that thing. Then we talk about writing trade books and get a little nerdy about that thing. Well, well, well. This is our 100th episode of The Big Boo Cast, and it only took us 11-ish years to get to this point. Try not to be overwhelmed by our frenzied pace. This is part two of our recent conversation with our funny, wise, loves-him-some-80's-music friend, Travis Cottrell. After we wrapped up lo, all of our many thoughts about 80's songs, we moved into some serious reminiscing (at least from Melanie and me) about the country music of the early 90s. And then we talked about at least twenty more artists / songs that filled our 20s with love and happiness and all manner of wonderful memories. You can find links to those playlists in the show notes. We also got to ask Travis some questions about recording his latest worship album, The Reason, and we had the best time listening to him talk about that process. There's also a moment where all three of us demonstrated some significant affection for Popeye's, and really, this should be no surprise at all. Up next: episode 100! Thanks for listening, everybody. As you can imagine, Melanie and I were delighted to have our good friend Travis Cottrell join us on Episode 98. We caught up on life in general - what's been going on with our kids, spring sports, Travis' feelings about the reboot of American Idol - and we also talked a little about Travis' FANTASTIC new worship album, The Reason. More than anything else, though, we enjoyed the fire out of a discussion about music from the 70s and 80s. It was a musical memory lane to beat the band (see what I did there)? It was so in-depth, in fact, that I finally decided to make a playlist of (almost) everything we mentioned (WHY isn't "And When She Danced" from Stealing Home available on any sort of streaming service, I ask you?). All that to say: we had a blast talking with Travis - so much so that there will be a part 2 posted in the next few days. Hope y'all enjoy it! Well, episode 97 is really a continuation of episode 96, and I even thought about calling it episode 96.5, but WHATEVER EVERYBODY WE ARE SO CLOSE TO 100 AND I WILL TAKE EVERY NUMBER I CAN GET. Therefore comma I am embracing episode NINETY-SEVEN with everything I have. SO, here's what's happening this go 'round. Melanie and I continue our discussion of every day favorites (makeup remover! K-cups! and other exciting items!). Then our oh-so-funny friend Jamie Golden jumps in with some serious, life-giving wisdom about shopping at Sephora. And I know I mentioned this last week, but I'll mention it again: Jamie co-hosts The Popcast and The Bible Binge with Knox McCoy. She is one of the funniest people alive at this present time in American history and basically Melanie and I would listen to her read the phone book for infinity. Even better, though, is that talking to me makes Jamie's Southern accent way more pronounced, and that has blessed my actual heart every time I've listened. And I've listened a lot because for some reason this episode took me eleventy thousand hours to edit. I hope you feel that it was worth it. :-) Enjoy, y'all! This episode is the first of a two-part series, which all sounds very fancy until you realize that it's actually not fancy even a little bit. But here's what happened: first we talked about Melanie's car troubles and my new simple suppers plan. Then Melanie and I had a *very* lengthy discussion about some of our everyday favorites (coffee, running shoes, Mexican entrees, etc.), and since we talked for a sweet forever (not to mention that we wanted to keep the show notes at least a smidge shorter than a novel), we decided to break the favorites discussion into two episodes. BUT - since we didn't want these next two episodes to be shorter than what you're used to, we're offering a little bonus content in episodes 96 and 97: interviews with two of our favorite (and funny) podcast-y people. SO, here's how that will play out in this very special episode 96. For about 45 minutes (-ish) you'll hear Melanie and me talk about all manner of favorites, and for another 20 minutes (-ish) you'll hear me talking with our hilarious, brilliant friend Jamie Golden. As many of you know, Jamie co-hosts The Popcast and (new podcast alert!) The Bible Binge with Knox McCoy. Jamie is a delight and a joy and it was the biggest blast to get to ask her some questions and then laugh at her answers. Anyway, I know that was a whole lot of explanation, so all that to say: episode 96 is a little bit different - but it's a good different. Not a long-term different. Just a two-episode different (episode 97 will come out in a few days - just FYI). Enjoy, y'all! I don't even know what to tell y'all about Episode 95, so how about some fun facts? Number of times we thought we'd worked out a time to record it: approximately 14. Number of times we actually recorded it: 2. Number of times we were able to retrieve the files after we recorded: 1. Number of times I wondered if we would ever complete Episode 95: at least 20. Number of times teenagers' sports commitments forced us to re-schedule: 6. Number of times Melanie and I cleared our throats when we recorded this episode: 784. Number of times I edited out the sound of throat-clearing: 784. All that to say: it was a long road. But in the end, we got 'er done. And we had a fine time talking about the Olympics and Black Panther and Valentine's Day and why we all need to relax about the number of children people do or don't have. Hope y'all enjoy! Maybe the most important aspect of this episode is that Melanie has some very exciting news about her eyelashes. And honestly, why would any of us care about any other topic when clearly there have been some VERY IMPORTANT eyelash developments since the last episode? We do, however, talk about a bunch of stuff before we get to the eyelashes. We answer some of your questions about marriage and parenting (keep in mind that the verdict is still out on whether we have the foggiest idea what we're talking about re: parenting), and we also dig into a little discussion about body image (FOR SURE a first for us). Then we segue' into, you know, eyelashes and hair and the fact that one of us has paralyzing fear of repetitive circles. AS YOU DO. Enjoy, y'all! Well, for the first half of this episode Melanie and I talk about movies and TV, and for a big chunk of the second half of this episode, we talk about marriage. Yes. I know. MARRIAGE. Which we hardly ever talk about in any sort of detail. But we have us a fine conversation about it right here on episode 93. We also discuss our new favorite music and an outstanding list of Amazon products that Melanie discovered, so go ahead and prepare yourself to travel down that rabbit hole for a few hours after you listen. Well, it's our first episode of 2018, and true to form, we're all over the place. We analyze Hazel's behavior during Christmas break, we marvel at the fact that Melanie is smitten with a real-live musical (The Greatest Showman), and we decide we like Bruno Mars' new single more than Justin Timberlake's. As you do. We also talk college football (WHO IS SURPRISED) and compare Melanie's commitment to information about the Royal Family to my commitment to information that I find on Twitter (we'll have to explain that in greater detail on another podcast, but suffice it to say that I love me some current events). Melanie also has a new hair product to share with us, and I totally ordered said product while we were recording because this, THIS IS WHAT I DO. Enjoy, everybody! A couple of weeks ago Melanie and I realized that by the end of this year we would have recorded TWENTY TWO EPISODES of the podcast in 2017, and if you think that hasn't blown our minds just a little bit, then clearly you missed the part where it took us NINE WHOLE YEARS to record the previous 68. We realize that for actual podcasting professionals (or, you know, people who just take some time to plan) the 22 episode achievement might not be a big deal (or perhaps even mildly embarrassing because SLACKERS), but we prefer to channel Ramona Singer and say KUDOOZ TO US. Is this what victory feels like? Anyway, on this episode we talk at length about our cooking-related ailments, our current viewing habits, our fascination with Meghan Markle, and our favorite moments from 2017. Our good friend Travis Cottrell is with us on this episode of the podcast, and we talk about all manner of unrelated topics. We dig into some Christmas traditions, discuss our favorite Christmas music, break down the college football play-offs (along with our coaching changes), and ponder the deep well of teenage sarcasm that is currently full to overflowing in all of our homes. Also, you'd better believe that Neil Diamond makes an appearance. Or two. Or three. Be warned: Melanie, Travis, and I talk about so much stuff that you may never get through all the links. But in case you'd like to try, you can find most of what we mention below. On this episode Melanie and I talk to our (hilarious) (also deeply gifted) singer / songwriter / comedian friend Dave Barnes, and unfortunately I forgot to hit "record" for the first 15-20 minutes of our conversation. SO THERE'S THAT. And what that means for you, dear listener, is that when I finally did in fact hit the record button, we were smack-dab in the middle of a conversation about the Enneagram and introversion / extroversion. So just stick with us during what will certainly feel like conversational whiplash. It'll all make sense soon enough. And despite my personal technical ineptitude, I have to say that talking with Dave was super encouraging for Melanie and me (and I think it will be for you, too). He has such great perspective on writing / creating, and the way he thinks through that whole process was really therapeutic for us. We talk a lot about calling and the vulnerability involved in walking out whatever that calling happens to be - not to mention that we laugh a ton. We also talk about the State / Ole Miss rivalry. Because OF COURSE. Just keep in mind that we recorded this episode before Mullen and Sumlin left the Bulldogs and the Aggies, respectively (WHAT WE DIDN'T KNOW, y'all. WHAT WE DIDN'T KNOW). Enjoy, everybody! When we decided to do a Christmas Gift Guide for the podcast, we thought we'd pick five gift options a piece. Ten total. Easy breezy. Here's how many gifts we actually discuss: EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY NINE. That might be a slight exaggeration, but have mercy we talked about all manner of Christmas gifts and chased all manner of Christmas gift rabbits, so to speak. We had the best time talking about fun things to buy for your favorite hostesses or teenagers or husbands or friends or parents, and we hope our suggestions make your gift buying a little easier. And if Christmas shopping isn't your thing, we hope you enjoy our commentary. Because clearly we have SO VERY MANY THOUGHTS about various gift options. Links for everything we mention are below. So, full disclosure - we recorded this podcast episode over a week ago, but then I (Sophie) went out of town last weekend for speaking stuff and this past week was jam-packed and I just got around to editing and recording the sponsor stuff and etc. Better late than never, I guess. And for your sake it's probably better that you don't have to listen to my post- Alabama / Mississippi State heartbreak. What a game that was. As far as this episode goes, we have A LOT OF THOUGHTS about November heat, social media, the anger that results from wearing Spanx (Melanie has a fantastic term for that), and college football. There's also some talk about a cat with a jar on its head.  Enjoy, y'all! - Will Ferrell's bellybutton - Tasty video for Halloween treats (this video made Sophie irrationally angry - our friend Jamie who used to make cake pops - "Oh, Happy Day" video that Sophie has watched an excessive amount of times - the Next Door app - OPI You're Blushing Again - Bobbi Brown Plum Brandy lipstick (Sophie's new favorite) - Hummingbird Farms Big Boo Box ($49 price won't show up until you use coupon code mentioned in this episode) - Hummingbird Farms Big Boo Too Box ($49 price won't show up until you use coupon code mentioned in this episode)

This time around we discuss the Mississippi State / A&M game, the Astros' win in the World Series, and the glory of a redemptive sports moment. (For example.) (This is the GIF Melanie texted Sophie during the State / A&M game.) (This is the GIF Melanie tweeted after the Astros' victory.) (You can see the contrast.) We also talk Sol Dance (edited to add: pretty sure that I said Selena Gomez instead of Demi Lovato, but that is understandable since I am 104 and had also just read news that Selena and the Biebs are back together), the reality of life with our high-maintenance dogs, and Sophie's simmering jealousy about the fact that Melanie has calves that will fit into any boot. There might also be about ten minutes where we look at the Free People website and talk about the stuff that we like.  So. You know. Super important, deeply serious things. We are all over the place in this podcast episode - from an exercise class that I recently tried to pajama leggings to hypothetical situations that would make us sprint to kombucha to football to mascara to essential oils to our feelings about scarves. BUCKLE UP, PEOPLE. Also, I sound more quiet than usual on this episode, and after troubleshooting to the point of utter frustration, I have come to the conclusion that my USB microphone wasn't plugged in and I was recording using my computer's internal microphone. Please forgive this latest technical difficulty. Unfortunately, I think we all know that it won't be the last. It's sort of how we roll. It's been an exciting few days here at The Big Boo Cast because Melanie's fantastic new book, Church of the Small Things, released this past Tuesday. Yay, Melanie! Yay, everyone who gets to read it! So you might not believe it, but on this particular episode we actually stick with a theme and talk about some of our very favorite small things. I went sort of sentimental and nostalgic with my list, and Melanie went sort of practical with hers, and the result is that somewhere in the overlap of our lists, we found a way to talk about some topics that we adore (specifically: comfy clothes, our latest obsessions, the best parts of friendship, and exciting new snack options).  We had the best time recording our very special Church of the Small Things episode - hope you enjoy it! Well, the first thing I should probably mention is that we recorded this episode while we were having a thunderstorm in Birmingham, and Hazel was losing her fool mind over the weather. Just think of her barking as soothing background music.  The second thing I should probably mention is that we talk a LOT about college football this time around. It's just that time of year, y'all. So we break down the latest with Melanie's Aggies and my Bulldogs, we discuss Melanie's need for some football boundaries, and I break down my most recent trip to Starkville.  (Full disclosure: Melanie and I recorded this episode just a few days after Mississippi State's decisive victory over the LSU Tigers. It was a glorious time. Since then, however, the Bulldogs have experienced the heartache of a loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. Needless to say, we recorded a quick post-State/UGA follow-up segment to address this sad MSU turn of events, along with the outcome of the A&M/Arkansas game. Stay tuned at the end for that.) We also talk about Homecoming dresses (because CAROLINE IS THAT OLD NOW, HOW DID THAT EVEN HAPPEN?), rose hip oil (who's surprised?), and TV. These are a few of our favorite things. Well, first of all, we recorded this episode with Melanie talking on her phone because her microphone was in the guest room where P was napping. Sure, we could have waited until another day so that the sound quality was better, but when you've only recorded 80 podcasts over the last 10 years, you take the recording opportunities when they present themselves - no need to wait for pesky sound equipment. Second, we answer several of your questions in this podcast, including how we navigate arguments in our marriages and whether watching This Is Us is worth it (short answer: YES). We also discuss fall fashion, disagree about whether booties have run their course, and marvel at our current state of skin care contentment. Finally, we talk about workout pants and granola because, well, of course. We'd love for you to subscribe on iTunes, and we'd be honored if you'd leave us a review. It's always a treat to have our friend Travis Cottrell on the podcast, and this episode is no exception. We cover a wide stretch of conversational ground: favorite football snacks, the wonder of an Amish donut, our ever-growing kids, current Bible study options, and, of course, our obsession with rose hip oil. (That last one was more of a discussion between Melanie and me. But Travis was as patient as he could be when we talked about it.) (Or maybe he was just distracted.) We also reminisce about shampoos from the 70s. I would try to give you some context, but it's probably just easier if you listen for yourself. And no joke: Melanie must have taken her one-liner pill before we recorded; there are some Shankle Gems (I think we may have to trademark that phrase) (only not really) scattered throughout. I think it was last summer when Melanie and I first talked about Last Chance U. We both binge-watched season one of the Netflix series, and in addition to discussing it on the podcast, there were several times when we talked on the phone about it because we were so fascinated by a certain player or could not believe how someone reacted. Then, in episode 78 I mentioned that I'd watched season 2 and found it just as magical as season 1 (though, as I have often pointed out, the language is terrible). Anyway. All that to say: you can imagine our delight when Brittany Wagner, the academic counselor on LCU, agreed to be our special guest on episode 79. It was THE MOST FUN. So, in this episode, Melanie and I talk to Brittany about football and clothes and beauty products. (I should mention that I make a critical error and identify Mississippi State's season where they were ranked #1 as the 2015 season...but it was 2014...so I beg a thousand pardons.) We also hear about some of the players she'll be watching play D-1 this fall - and how her new career adventure got started (it's such a neat story). After Melanie and I finish our conversation with Brittany, we launch into a discussion about music, what we're cooking, and a whole host of unrelated items. In other words: business as usual. Well, this super-sized podcast was a mighty memorable moment for Melanie and me. Because much to our delight, legendary football coach Jackie Sherrill and his super-talented daughter, Bonnie Bishop, join us at the beginning of this episode. Specifically, they share some of the challenges they faced in terms of forming a relationship after Coach Sherrill married Bonnie's mom. Now they're extremely close, and they're doing speaking events about motivation and relationships - and how when it comes to life, it's more than Xs and Os. Mel and I had the best time talking with them about football and parenting and football and also football. And seriously - it was such a treat to be able to soak up their stories and their wisdom. You're going to love spending some time with them and laughing with them. After our conversation with Coach Sherrill and Bonnie, Melanie and I jump into our regular brand of nonsense: her dog Piper's recent bout with intestinal distress, our current Netflix favorites, my reaction to Dunkirk, and Melanie's new favorite skin care product. Hope y'all enjoy it! Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - Jackie Sherrill - Bonnie Bishop - Coach Sherrill on Twitter - Bonnie on Twitter and Instagram - Bonnie's website - Bonnie's latest album - Bonnie's "Ain't Who I Was" (There's a little language :-) - but my goodness this is a phenomenal song - and a quick BigBoo PSA: if you're drawn to the music Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, etc., then Bonnie Bishop's music will be right up your alley.) - Last Chance U - Season 2 - Jane the Virgin - Pentel Sign Pen (Sophie's forever favorite) - Organic Rose Hip Oil - (By the way, this article popped up in my Twitter feed this morning, and it sheds even more light on why Melanie has embraced this product.) - Dunkirk - Hummingbird Farms Lavender Body Oil No. 6 (this stuff is a WONDER) - All in All, Sophie's new devotional journal for young women Grateful for y'all!

In this episode we talk about our summertime travel, the life-changing hummus I recently enjoyed, our current struggles with our hair, and our lack of business vision or insight or skill. Melanie also states her very strong feelings about being on a boat in the middle of a large body of water (suffice it to say that a cruise is nowhere in her future) and relays a tale about a very aggressive seagull. We also talk about potential road trip destinations for next year, recap the summer movies we've seen (here's a hint: I have only seen two), run through a few other entertainment highlights from the last month or so, and break down our feelings about the Instastory. So there's some variety, I guess. Enjoy, y'all! Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - Sophie's Kenya trip with Compassion (link to recap podcast with Jamie Ivey) - Dear Evan Hansen - Dizengoff in Chelsea Market - L'Oreal root cover - Magnolia Market - Opal ice maker - Chadillac's Backyard Water Park - Lake Tejas - The Marlboro Man Sandwich from Pioneer Woman - Melanie's new book: Church of the Small Things - Sophie's new book: All in All (a journaling devotional for young women) - Jenny from the Block - For Forever (from the Dear Evan Hansen cast recording) If you're on Facebook, well, we are, too!   Melanie's blog / Twitter / IG Sophie's blog / Twitter / IG

On this episode we discuss my almost-here trip to Kenya, what I refer to as Melanie's enthusiastic opposition to khaki, and recent events at the SEC Baseball Tournament. Recent events may or may not have involved me approaching someone I believed to be a This Is Us cast member. Basically there's a lot of talk about sports - college baseball in particular - a lot of laughs, and a lot of theories about why I might have felt so compelled to approach the alleged celebrity. Good times, people. We hope you enjoy. (You can find show notes on either of our blogs: http://boomama.net or http://thebigmamablog.com.)

Let's just get this out of the way: there are times when Melanie's internet is dicey on this episode. KEEP DOING YOU, AT&T. But if you can stick with us during the our internet troubles, then you'll hear our thoughts on Pippa Middleton's wedding (Melanie is our resident royals expert), the madness that is May, and my upcoming trip to Kenya. We also discuss shoe options for summertime, Southern Charm Savannah, and the challenges of writing a devotional book (which, by the way, were surprising to both of us). Enjoy, y'all!
