The World Health Organization has officially declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic, which means “the worldwide spread of a new disease”. NBC News reports that the attending physician of Congress and the Supreme Court, told senate staff that he expects 70 million to 150 million in the U.S. will contract the virus. Of those, 80% will be fine. President Trump announced that all travel from Europe to the U.S. will be suspended for 30 days. The European Commission condemned the move, noting ““The coronavirus is a global crisis, not limited to any continent and it requires cooperation rather than unilateral action”. The restrictions impact 26 countries and “did not appear to be tied to the severity of outbreaks in individual countries”, reports the New York Times.
The NBA has suspended the season after a player for the Utah Jazz tested positive, the NCAA will close all tournament basketball games to fans. Actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have tested positive for the virus while traveling in Australia. Six more states report their first cases, bringing the total number in the U.S. to 1,323 in 44 states and the District of Columbia. There have been 38 deaths, the majority in Washington State.
