We can enter a competition and worry about whose in our class, what the judges will give us, where we will place, what our horses will do. We can worry about all these things we have no control over and let our nerves get the better of us. Then we go to trot down a centre line and can’t even remember if we turn left or right! We have been so wrapped up in things outside of our control that we have lost control on the things we can control. Before I started working on my mindset I had no tools, no tactics, no weapons to combat a vulnerable and scattered mind. Over time though I have now learnt how to improve my mindset and I have become obsessed with how our minds influence our performance and everyday life. “Negative emotions are just signals, they’re just triggers, they’re letting you know that you are now focused on something outside your control.” In order to be able to create more calm within different situations you face, it’s important to realise that there is very little inside of your control and you want to make sure that you’re not pouring energy into things that you can’t control. When it comes to horses, they are unpredictable and if you pushing your comfort zone and out-competing there are a lot of elements outside of your control. So before you spiral into on overwhelmed state where anxiety kicks in and you are running on adrenaline. Take a moment and realise there’s no sense in trying to control the who is in your class because you can’t. There’s no sense in trying to control what the judges will give you, because you can’t. There’s no sense in trying to control the weather because you can’t. There is no sense worrying what so in so is saying on the side line, because you can’t control that. So just let those things happen and instead focus on what you can control. No one likes quitting or giving up on their goals and dreams in life, but so often I see people just settling and not willing to step outside their comfort zone. You see in order to achieve your goals it requires you to stretch yourself a little. Stepping outside your comfort zone and stretching yourself a little. You see too often people quit because they let their fears win. However, everything you dream of is usually on the other side of those fears and facing them is what helps you achieve your goals. Strip away the skin, fascia, muscles, organs, blood vessels of a human and you’re left with the bones: the foundation providing passive structural support to your body. To often injuries happen from falls and they could be prevented. Learning how to say no and what to say yes to is actually a skill. Because it can be so easy to say yes to everything, however when you do, you end up completely overcommitted and not able to do what you actually want to do. I get asked a lot about how I set boundaries and how to set them so in this episode I discuss why they are important and how they can help you do more of what you enjoy. Many struggle with this and me included, until I learnt strategies. One of the best things i learnt and I still use every time I am trying to figue out if something is a yes or no, is using Hell yes, or no. You see it can be so easy to say yes to everything and you end up completely overcommitted and then when it comes round to an opportunity that you want to be able to say yes to, you can’t because you are overcommitted and most probably exhausted. Saying no, doesn’t make you a bad person or cut you off from the world. In fact, learning to say no is the complete opposite of this. Setting healthy boundaries allows you to open yourself up to be your true self. The fullest version of yourself. In this episode I discuss why sleeping more can help your riding and why it should be given the attention it deserves. Yes I am suggesting you sleep more! Easier said than done, but so incredibly important. Our body recovers and repairs while we sleep, so if you are lacking energy, motivation, having problems losing weight or simply struggling to get out of bed in the morning, start paying attention to how much you are sleeping and the quality of it. Ideally aim for 8 hours and for most people I so go for 9-10 hours. Yip…go for more! Why, because in todays modern world we are so busy being busy that most of us are exhausted and if all did was tried to get more sleep you may be surprised at what this can do for how you feel each and every day. In this episode I go into full detail about how you can improve your sleep, by mastering your routine. I also give you tools and ideas to try and help with your evening routine. Small changes can make a big difference and sleep can help you unlock that energy and have more fuel to be able to enjoy your riding. Dealing with competition nerves can be exhausting and can really make a huge impact on how you perform. In this episode I share what I try to do to control competition nerves and share what I do to be fully prepared on the day. Mindset is everything when it comes to life and of course our riding and mastering our competition nerves. Often our own inner dialogue and chatter can hold us back from being able to do what we love and perform at our best. It doesn’t matter whether its just riding on the weekend or at a competition, the same principles can be applied. In this episode I share my competition mindset series of meditations and also let you know what I do the weeks leading up to a competition and what to do on the day to help control anxiety and non-useful inner dialogue. Understand why mindset plays such an important role in dressage and all horse riding. Learn how you can begin to improve it today. This episode I wanted to Introduce the DRT System and why mindset is such a huge component this. Dressage is a team sport. We work with our horse to train & perform beautiful dances together, creating a common language & forming an unbreakable team bond. Our ultimate goal is to synchronize, to move as one with our horse. This coalescence is the pinnacle we strive for. In order to achieve this, we need to understand the four elements of the DRT System and in the episode I go into detail on each of these and why mindset is just as important as the other three components. Dressage is a subjective sport and so much is out of your control. Your mindset and your ability to nurture positive thoughts, focussing on your own goals and what you can control is the single most valuable life skill you could have. Your external world is a reflection of your internal world and if you want to change your external world you need to change your internal world. Tune in here or where ever your favourite source is at youtube, itunes, podbean, stitcher or spotify. Understand why core strength is important for all horse riding and why in particular it should be a focus when you start. This episode we talk all about the core strength required for horse riding, particularly dressage. The way you carry your body throughout your day ultimately determines how you ride. Even if you start your ride with great posture, your body will seek the position it’s used to especially once fatigue sets in. If you find yourself sitting at a desk most days hunched over a keyboard or regularly driving a car slumped in the seat, your posture on your horse is likely to reflect this. Establishing good spinal alignment during your everyday activities helps to foster the muscle memory and strength you require to maintain a beautifully balanced posture in the saddle. Notice how you stand, how you sit and how you carry out your daily chores. To improve your posture on and off the horse, one of the most important places to begin is with is your core. Your core is the entire central unit of your body and includes the muscles in the front, back and side. This is the area that we’re wanting to strengthen in order to maintain good posture for riding. There are a variety of different muscles as part of your central core. Working these muscles together and in balance within your neutral spine is key to strengthen your core. A strong core will help you maintain a neutral spine while the horse is moving underneath us. Tune into the episode to get examples of how to train your core and be sure to download our free guide to get started. – https://dressageridertraining.com/guide/ Tune in here or where ever your favourite source is at youtube, itunes, podbean, stitcher or spotify. Understand why dressage rider hip flexibility is something to be taken seriously if you are wanting to enjoy your riding in many years to come. Today on the show I discuss your hips and why they play such a pivotal part in your riding. Your hip joints are ball and socket joints. This means they move in a variety of ways with the range of motion varying based on your flexibility and lifestyle. As a dressage rider, a good functioning range of motion is crucial to shock absorb your horse’s movement and to direct that force efficiently through your body. To do that optimally, your hips need to be correctly positioned and properly aligned. The saddle, the horse’s width and your mobility can all affect that alignment. As such, a rider may have good alignment on one horse, but poor alignment on another. Just like our horses, we’re all built differently, so it’s important to understand how to foster good balance regardless of what horse you’re riding. When a rider’s hips are balanced and evenly aligned with the pelvis and spine, full range of motion is available. When that range is limited due to seat position, the rider’s ability to absorb the horse’s movement is compromised. Understanding this and working on your hips routinely will help keep them healthy and mobile. Tune into the episode and learn how you can improve them today and be sure to download the free guide here to get some hip stretches to get you started. Learn how a Foundation of Movement can help with your dressage stamina and overall sense of wellbeing as a dressage rider. How much are you moving off your horse each day? In this episode, I discuss the importance of a foundation of movement off your horse. You see your body is designed to move. The more sedentary your job and lifestyle is, the more focus you need to put into incorporating more movement throughout your day. The position your body is in for the majority of the day will affect your body’s alignment and your overall energy. It will also impact your riding posture. To help improve your riding, fitness and overall well-being, it’s important to bring greater awareness to your environment and level of movement you’re doing daily. In addition to consciously achieving a neutral spine throughout the day which I discussed in episode 1, I encourage you to consider how you can add more movement into your day. Ideally, you want to aim to achieve 10,000 steps every day off your horse and spending 50% of your day standing or moving. Using a stand-up desk for a few hours, engaging in walking meetings or parking your car a few blocks from your destination to walk are all great ways to increase your level of movement. One of the benefits of horse ownership is all the chores that come with it, requiring a relatively active lifestyle. If you’re already keeping busy attending to these tasks, that’s great. If not, this is an ideal place to start on your well-being journey. Not only will it increase your daily movement, but it will also have a huge impact on your riding stamina and posture.   Some key points I make in the episode Can you make your morning business calls walking or standing with a good neutral posture? Can you have your morning coffee while taking a short walk rather than sitting at a cafe? Can you perform some stretches while you’re watching TV in the evening? Movement with good posture helps improve your muscle memory and enhances your awareness of the body as you ride. Making small changes to increase your steps and to sit less doesn’t require you to make more time in your day. Instead, it’s about being more efficient with your time. Small tweaks to your day will make your lifestyle better complement your passion for becoming the best rider you can. Sit better. Sit differently. Sit less. Move more. Discover what good riding posture is, how to achieve it and how it plays a role in your dressage position and your future riding years. As the first official episode of The Dressage Rider Training Audio Show, we thought it would be appropriate to give you an understanding of the Dressage Rider Training (DRT) System and start with your riding posture. The Dressage Rider Training systems is made up of four key elements. Stability, Suppleness, Stamina and Mindset. Each of these components as equally important as the other in helping you become the best rider you can be and achieving Coalescence.  Each of these elements come together to help you move as one with the horse. To begin with though, lets discuss what riding posture is and how you can begin to improve it today. Why We Need Good Alignment Posture is vital as a rider, not just for appearances, but for good alignment and prevention of injury. As your DRT Trainer (Nicola Smith) I runs through in this episode what good riding posture is and why it is important to maintain and what can happen when you have poor posture. I also give you useful tips on how to maintain your posture and set it up throughout the period of your day so that when it does come to riding, its easier to maintain.
