A long time ago (well, 2003), the Dandy Warhols released ‘We Used To Be Friends’ and we hadn’t thought of it lately at all, except for it being the theme tune to Veronica Mars. With the assistance of Guest Deputy Sheriff Charlie Harding of the podcast Switched On Pop, we investigate the several versions of the song, stuffing a manila folder with grunge guitars, scratchy synths, bravado and rather unusual syntax. Find Charlie’s Switched On Pop podcast and book at switchedonpop.com. Listen to all the versions of the song, see more about this episode, and read the transcript, at the podcast’s official site: VMIpod.com/themetune. This episode was edited and mixed by Helen Zaltzman; the non-Dandy Warhols music is by Martin Austwick and Jenny Owen Youngs; the logo is by Hrishikesh Hirway; the show is distributed by PRX.org. Find the show @VMIpod on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, and tell us which version of ‘We Used To Be Friends’ you would prefer to listen to on a loop for all eternity. We’ll be back next week with Season 2 episode 1!

For Veronica Mars Investigations Investigations season 1, Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman are joined by deputy detective Duana Taha, TV writer and showrunner, who lifts the lid on working on teen dramas, writing raps for Drake, and being Canadian in Cuba. A LONG TIME AGO, ON VERONICA MARS: Veronica sends off a DNA test to find out who’s her daddy. A rich white boy of Neptune has supposedly joined a cult - and become much nicer as a result? Veronica infiltrates the supposed cult - and starts getting sucked in herself? And what’s happened to darling Keith’s poor precious face??? Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 9: Drinking the Kool-Aid, and get stuck into such mysteries as: can the Mooncalf Collective cult/commune be so bad if it has de-douchified a rich BroNiner? Whatever happened to waterbeds? Should people kool it with the Kool-Aid jokes? And why anyone would be so cagy about a load of poinsettias?? A LONG TIME AGO, ON VERONICA MARS: A purity test has caused chaos at Neptune High, as students are shamed for their sexual behaviour (if they're female - they’re lauded for it if they're male). We meet Wallace's mom! And Wallace mom's shitty lodger, who won't leave! That is, until Keith Mars goes full Papa Bear on him. And Veronica comes face to face with Lilly's convicted killer. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 8: Like a Virgin, and consider such mysteries as what it would be like to get the birds and the bees talk from Keith Mars, why lovely Meg Manning has such a vile boyfriend, whether barking like a dog is truly the best tactic to achieve an eviction, and why Veronica keeps on committing offences that would land her on the sex offender register. A LONG TIME AGO, ON VERONICA MARS: Logan and Weevil are stuck in detention together - and honestly, that’s all we need for this episode. But there is more - Veronica’s (beautiful) pregnant neighbour Jessica Chastain disappears. And her (scraggly) boyfriend doesn’t seem upset about it… Veronica discovers some shocking information about her mom. And the school flagpole is back causing trouble. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 7: The Girl Next Door, and probe such mysteries as whether to book ourselves in for a stay at the motel that plays the Mars apartment, how many crimes it is to impale a teacher’s car on a flagpole, and why hot teens might be compelled to wear garments in a shade we can only describe as ‘light liver’. See more about this episode, and a transcript, at the podcast’s official site VMIpod.com/1-07. A Long Time Ago on Veronica Mars: We meet Logan’s dad - and swiftly wish we hadn’t. Duncan’s dad makes him run for class president. Also running for president: rebellious Wanda! A new friend for Veronica - or is she? Logan’s got a new hobby: running amateur boxing tournaments. Veronica finds out something majorly dodgy in Lilly’s murder files. And: Jane Lynch in alpha mode! Our favourite flavour of Jane Lynch. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 6: Return of the Kane, and consider such mysteries as why legs are not universally known as ‘getaway sticks’, why Neptune High’s pirate points merit system seems relevant only to the sportif and/or the rich, and whether we actually LOVE and ADMIRE Duncan in this episode?!?!? See more about this episode, and a transcript, at the podcast’s official site VMIpod.com/1-06. A Long Time Ago on Veronica Mars: Smuggling steroids from Mexico doesn’t go according to plan; Keith’s happy to be dating again; Veronica is NOT happy Keith is dating again; Logan is the least jerky jerk, for once in his precious life! And Jenny’s visceral hatred for Troy at last proves to be justified. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate *Veronica Mars *Season 1 Episode 5: You Think You Know Somebody, and consider such mysteries as whether there are really snoopers’ websites like privateeyez.com, why Veronica is scuppering Keith’s dating life, what Malibu the American Gladiator is - OH WHO CARES WHEN ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT, AT LAST, JENNY’S NEMESIS SMUGFACE McSMUG IS BANISHED FROM NEPTUNE! A Long Time Ago on Veronica Mars: Wallace is living his best life: crushing on a girl who just *happens* to need the services of a private detective, pretending to be a math nerd, and AT LONG LAST getting to go to a party. Gamer guys are running a massive scam from their college dorm room, with a complex front of dudes wearing baggy rumpled beige clothes. Veronica dug into her huge wardrobe of disguises! And a lot of those disguises are ‘hot girl’. Flashback limo party, present-day college party: which is cooler? A: any party with Lilly Kane at it would be way cooler than a culturally appropriative hat party. And Veronica swam amongst the memories of homecoming dances past before finally going skinnydipping IRL, in the present. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 4: The Wrath of Con, and delve into such mysteries as why you would let Veronica Mars anywhere near your big drawer of keys, whether Duncan’s denim blazer is formal or informal, how to pronounce ‘wrath’, and where on earth the Marses store their huge range of disguises and gadgets. A Long Time Ago on Veronica Mars: A squeaky little freshman hired Veronica to help find his missing father; Duncan threw his medication down the drain, with hallucinatory results; Keith developed a crush on Veronica’s guidance counsellor; and things heated up between Veronica and the supposedly sexy and charming Troy, but still aren’t as hot as her hot’n’heavy Duncan flashbacks. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 3: Meet John Smith, and ponder such mysteries as whether or not it’s creepy that Keith used his PI Powers to track down his crush to her regular coffee shop; how Veronica can even pretend to enjoy Troy’s prank tales; and whether the writers knew what they were doing with Duncan, or just threw dice at the beginning of each of his scenes to decide whether to go with ⚁ silent but helpful Duncan, ⚂ milky Duncan, ⚄ sardonically-toasting-the-former-family-dog Duncan, or ⚅ one-man production of Grease Duncan. A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS: Weevil & his grandma were both framed for credit card fraud; Logan was cheated on by Paris Hilton, but we are glad because he said some heinously classist & racist stuff in this episode; Some guy named Troy shows up and appears to be nice but says some rather douchey things; Keith singlehandedly caught an escaped felon; And Wallace just really wants to go to a party. Please let him go to a party, Veronica - any party! Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 2: Credit Where Credit's Due, and ponder such mysteries as whether Paris Hilton has ever ridden a scooter before, why Sheriff Lamb’s zingers are SO bad, and where do the other students relieve themselves when Veronica is using the school bathroom as her office. A LONG TIME AGO, ON VERONICA MARS: Wallace got duct taped to the school flagpole by Weevil; Keith inquired about the identity of your daddy; Logan smashed Veronica’s headlights with a crowbar; and Veronica tried to cram three episodes-worth of backstory about her murdered best friend, her missing mom and her social ostracism into forty minutes - in between staking out the Camelot Motel, framing Logan for having a bong on school grounds, colluding with the fire chief to swap out police evidence, and cutting Wallace down from that flagpole. She’s a busy kid. Also, Duncan… existed. Barely. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman as they investigate Veronica Mars** Season 1 Episode 1: Pilot*, and ponder such mysteries as how to get duct tape off your bathing suit region, what happened to the original Backup, and how long it would *really take to get a bespoke ceramic bong made.
