Sometimes, we get so caught up in hitting a home run, whether in life, relationships, or businesses. And we rely on it too much to save us. We never stop and think about aiming too high, but fail to take into consideration the steps that must come into play. Dr. Jeff Buske shares a story on how he and his children got hooked on surfing, and one of their ventures. He outlines that we must not skip steps; rather, we must take them. Instead of relying on that elusive home run, score singles on base after base after base.

Dr. Jeff Buske tells an anecdote on how an early morning stroll almost turned for the worse because he was not focusing on the moment. Going too fast and not relishing the present moment is like going through life with blinders on, says Dr. Jeff. When indifferent on the present, you are bound to miss out on some things that life has to offer you. Take a breather, and remind yourself to be in the moment. Invest in the now. The past cannot be changed, and your future depends on your present.

An injury reminds you that you are going too fast, and you need to slow down lest you lose everything you worked hard for. Just as meeting your goals is important, taking time for a breather is equally significant. You can’t appreciate everything, especially in this world that is moving too fast. In this episode, Dr. Jeff Buske outlines the importance of taking time for the self and enjoying what you have. He ends it with a plea. Whether in life, in work, or in business, find out where you need to lay low and rest.

Life can be one big, steep hill and on most days you have to decide and go with everything. Along the way, you’ll encounter people who are naysayers or those that try to bring you down. The trick in life is to keep going and make a new path until you reach your goal. In today’s episode, Dr. Jeff Buske talks about the time he went out jogging, and suddenly, while running, he realized that blazing a new path isn’t as easy as it sounds. Obstacles and hardships will almost always be present, but some people make the journey worthwhile.

In life, sometimes we’re tempted to do things on our own and decide for ourselves. But in some cases, asking for help isn’t a bad thing. If anything, having someone to teach you and coach you is better than not having the knowledge to tackle situations at all. Dr. Jeff Buske tells about his son, Maddox and how having a mentor helped his son bring out the best in him. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and admit that the knowledge you have is not enough. Just like Maddox, learn that being open to others’ advice is a stepping stone to success and future endeavors.

Every obstacle is an opportunity, and just like doors, they need to be unlocked with the right keys to make a significant change. Overcoming these obstacles would open up tremendous opportunities to help you achieve your vision and your long term targets. In this episode, Dr. Jeff Buske recalls a story when he found his dog Ozzy, who’s very skilled in using his paws to open house doors, made it into his son’s bedroom. Just like Ozzy, opening doors can be a way to overcome obstacles or serves as an entry point to achieving your desired targets.

In this episode, Dr. Jeff Buske talks about a storm in the Grandbury Area and a porta-potty sitting in the empty lot next to their house where there’s an open construction. At one point, a gust of heavy wind picked it up and threw it off on its side, revealing an ugly sight of blue poo. Everything was taken care of the next morning, but Dr. Buske talks about the symbolism of the porta-potty linked to our weaknesses and things we are keeping inside that can be exposed at any moment.

How often do you spend time on your phone in a day? How about spending time talking with your loved ones? Have you ever stopped for a moment and looked at how things are going on around you? There are a lot of things that we fail to notice every day because we are, most of the time, glued to our smartphones, almost 24/7. We are too focused on living for the future that we fail to live at the ‘present.’  In this episode, Dr. Jeff Buske tells us a short story of that one bizarre morning of encountering a fox right in his neighborhood, which made him realize a lot of things. That one startling moment made him ponder on things and appreciate what he failed to notice every morning.

As a dentist, Doctor Buske knows pretty well how to deal with patients, and he is also aware, of course, of what customer satisfaction is. In today’s episode, he narrates his dissatisfaction to an auto dealership company which he used in leasing his two vehicles. Because of his desire to buy a BMW, he exerted an extra mile in getting in touch with them but to no avail. Fortunately, he felt the warm customer service he expects on another company, and it was coupled with a great deal, outstanding service, and ease of processing. From here, Jeff points out the importance of customer satisfaction in the business. What areas in the customer service of your company need an overhaul? If you want to be hired always, create actionable steps to always over deliver your service.

Why is it common to focus more on the reasons why we can’t do something, rather than what we have to do to get the desired result? Dr. Buske’s patient was blown away by the lengths that he went to deliver when he could’ve just told them why they needed to come back Monday.  Where are you giving reasons instead of results?  Keep your focus on the results, regardless of the time and effort needed to make it happen.  Strive to be uncommon.

Dr. Buske knows that stress can cascade into every area of your life if you don’t deal with it in a timely manner. The field of dentistry is no stranger to stress and Jeff had to learn through trial and error that neither stuffing it down or sedating it would keep it at bay.  Why do we spend so much time running from and denying our stress?  Collide with it early on and take away its power.

Following the retirement of his business partner, Dr. Buske reflects on all he learned from his friend and mentor. The most important lesson being that none of us are entitled, as Jeff admits he entered the world of dentistry as an entitled man.  Not wanting to fail before he even started, Jeff had to commit to taking action every day to earn and keep his patients trust.  Where in life do you fall into the trap of entitlement?  Do you have the tools to get out?

This Memorial Day Dr. Buske and his wife didn’t fire up the grill or buy a new mattress, they attended a remembrance ruck. As they walked along, very aware of the additional 30 pounds on their backs, Jeff thought of the weight so many of us bear every day.  He challenges listeners to ask themselves two simple questions.  If we’re honest with ourselves, those answers just might be the first step in dropping that weight.

If you’re like Dr. Buske you aren’t a fan of the participation trophy generation. Jeff is proud to see that his son is outcome-driven and understands that in sports there is a winner and a loser.  What about in business though?  If you’re only concerned about your bottom line or winning, then your customers lose and soon enough you will start to lose too.  Look for win-win situations and keep them coming back.
