The Age of Miracles is a little bit science fiction, a little bit coming-of-age, and it effectively probes ordinary life not in spite of its un-real backdrop but because of it. **** You all keep telling me that the best part of the One Great Book bonus episodes we share on Patreon is that since they are all books that haven’t been released you’re able to request them from the library or preorder before everyone else. Preordering is a huge help to authors because that early interest shows publishers they should back the launch with advertising dollars, it signals to bookstores they should stock plenty of copies come release week, and it helps initial sales drive some buzz following the release.  Since all of those are true for me I want to say thank you by sharing a few goodies just for those of you who preorder my next book Don't Overthink It.  Order online or ask your local bookstore to order you a copy, then enter your email address and order number so we can email you the bonuses when they’re ready. Readers, thank you for your support. It means the world.   This was the final episode in Volume III. Learn more about all of the great books in this volume and sign up for our newsletter so you can stay in touch in the meantime at modernmrsdarcy.com/onegreatbook.

I once watched a woman miss her bus stop because she was utterly absorbed in this literary thriller. It's that good. **** One of my favorite library hacks is requesting new titles BEFORE their release date. And that’s why One Great Book patrons get bonus episodes of One Great Book featuring books that aren't even out yet–so you can get a jump on the holds list.  But that’s just one of the fun perks of being a supporter on Patreon. We also share exclusive peeks behind the scenes, bonus content from my one-hour podcast, What Should I Read Next, special online events like the Fall Book Preview, where I shared the most anticipated books coming out this fall, and bonus audio, like the interview I did with Celeste Ng for a community event here in town. We would love to see YOU in our Patreon community. Go to patreon.com/whatshouldireadnext to learn more, become a supporter, and start getting those great readerly perks.   Learn more about all of the great books in this volume at modernmrsdarcy.com/onegreatbook.

Wednesday Is Indigo Blue is a fascinating look into a little-explored aspect of the human mind, that may change the way you understand yourself and the people around you, that makes you marvel at the way our brains work, and may even make you question your understanding of reality as you know it.  ****  Learn more about all of the great books in this volume at modernmrsdarcy.com/onegreatbook.    If you are looking for a longer show to listen to on your commute or while you finish your to do list, OR if you just want a growing to be read list, you should be listening to What Should I Read Next. In his final novel Our Souls at Night, Kent Haruf reflects on love, happiness, and the small moments that make up a life; its bittersweet story lingers long after the final page.    **** Readers, great books stay with us long after we turn the last page. My book, I’d Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life, celebrates the staying power of such books, reading under the covers with a flashlight, organizing your bookshelves, and finding your book people. This perfectly giftable essay collection makes a great teacher gift, stocking stuffer, or hostess thank-you. I’d Rather Be Reading is available wherever you get your books.   Learn more about all of the great books in this volume at modernmrsdarcy.com/onegreatbook.

To me, there are two kinds of summer reads: fast-moving books that have me compulsively turning the pages, and more contemplative works that prompt me to slow down, both as a reader and as a person. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea sits firmly in the latter category. ****  Learn more about all of the great books in this volume at modernmrsdarcy.com/onegreatbook.    For more great books become a supporter on patreon where we share behind the scenes info, live chats with me, and One Great Bonus episodes where I tell you about a great book that's not even out yet.   Thanks to our sponsor Page 1 Books. Their No. 1 Book Subscription is a personalized service that hand-selects books for you based on your preferences. One Great Book listeners can save 15% on their subscription by using the code GREATBOOK.

This novel checks all my boxes: wildly ambitious, emotionally resonant, lushly written and laden with symbolism. And most importantly—it works.

Not my genre, not my style, not the kind of book I’m interested in, or so I thought. But then I gave Sylvain Neuvel’s Sleeping Giants a try. And… WOW.

The debut novel from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, one of today's greatest living writers, doesn't just display the seeds of greatness. It's already great—even though it was published when she was just twenty-six years old.
