“Isn’t a full schedule what I wanted?” You asked for the thing, you got it, and now what? You might be feeling guilty that you got what you wanted, all the blessings of a full schedule – but you are ready for a new level. Are you bitter, resentful, exhausted? Is your body breaking down? It’s time to make some money, honey. It’s time to PIVOT, PIVOT, PIVOT. (Yes, if you are hearing a “Friends” reference in your head, it’s on purpose) In this episode, I will teach you 3 WAYS to INCREASE your INCOME today without using any more of your most precious commodity – TIME. Emmie Perez is with me today talking about her a-ha LEVERAGING moment. Emmie is an Emotional Eating Coach at Blissfully Healthy Women’s Wellness Center. You can learn more about her at www.EmmiePerez.com. She was feeling torn between the hustle and exchanging hours for dollars, waking up every morning feeling exhausted despite LOVING what she does. Are you starting to wonder, “Is this all there is?” When your client load gets too big – it’s time to leverage and grow, girl. You just need to have a “why” for moving from one to many. How can you leverage your skills and time to get more information to the people who need it? How can you serve more people without repeating the same message again and again one on one? As much as we love to serve and care for others through our gifts and work – we also need to be able to have the time and energy to care for ourselves, our vessel, our souls. We need to learn how to get our message out there in a bigger way, by doing less. Bigger impact, do less. More money, do less. Pivot! When is enough, enough? What would happen to your business if a catastrophe happened? Or if you just need a break or a vacation? What would happen if you called yourself out on your own bullsh*t? What if you looked at the numbers, the time spent doing stuff you suck at? What if you started to really be the BOSS you know you can be? Boss up, glow up, grow up! No, really. When are you going to stop wasting 80% of your time on things you aren’t so great at – and only spending 20% of your time in your zone of genius? How much potential, money, opportunity, and growth are you missing out on because you are trying to keep all facets of your business under only YOUR thumb? Melinda Slater, of Melinda Slater Interiors, is here to talk about exactly this. Who did she hire, when, and why? Learn how coming to terms with her limitations helped her glow up, create more business and profit, and helped to keep her to pay off her debt. Yup, in two months time – she paid off her debt. Melinda learned a hard and difficult lesson through a catastrophic event – that our businesses need support and need to be able to continue to run smoothly even when we can’t be present. There comes a point in business where we can choose to just “survive” and be in a holding pattern or we can level up, as Ciara says, plan for the future, and get down to business. Are you limiting your potential by hanging on too tightly to the reins? What would LETTING GO make possible in your business? Are you freakin’ stuck?! Do you feel like you aren’t living up to your full potential – but you don’t know what the next step is? Are you TERRIFIED to step into your destiny, feeling stuck in your internal bullsh*t? Do you feel like you’re stretched soooo thin that you can’t deal with that voice inside that tells you that you are meant for MORE? What if you were so fed up with your own crap – that you finally took action? What if you said YES? What if you just went for it? Isn’t it time to say YES to YOU? (That’s a rhetorical question, ladies, because the answer is a resounding HELL YES) Dana Adams is the founder of the Life Mapping Institute, author of the book “Live Your Gift” and it’s amazing companion guide. She did the THING, she’s living her GIFT, and she wants to teach you how to do it, too. What amazing things are you carrying around in your gut, your soul, your head? What are you driven to give to the WORLD? Learn more about how to commit to what sets your soul on fire. Learn how to push through resistance and DO IT ANYWAY. Did you hear that? DO. IT. ANYWAY. What would you say if tomorrow, God asked you, “Did you use all the gifts that I gave you?” Dana asked herself this question after attending her first Front Seat Life event and the rest is history. It wasn’t easy – but it was worth it. A single mother of 4 boys, a woman who was stifled by fear, and who was nervous to show up – she made herself PROUD and so can you.

Where have you been Girl Boss? This episode is the first of a series of eight podcasts around being a Girl Boss and a new success path to really establish being who you are. I’m going to cover the shifts and all the stages it takes to become an effective girl boss and really build a long-term business strategy. Step one is about being unapologetically who you are. I have chosen my ideal client avatars for each of these eight steps. Joining me on this episode is Robin Miller, who is absolutely the most shining example I can possibly imagine of someone who has become completely unapologetically who she is. She shares her amazing story of transformation, from “Squirrel” to Girl Boss. (Well, we do see that the Squirrel-like tendencies are innate and can be hard to shake!) But she has, in a relatively short period of time, completely changed from someone who would “cocoon” in a bathtub to a beautiful butterfly. “There are times where I couldn’t handle it inside my skin anymore from the pain. And imagine 80 to 90% of that being able to be fixed, be corrected by learning about yourself. And you know, it’s huge. This is the biggest thing of my life.” We also talk about the power of healthy detachment, just stepping back when shit gets ugly, looking at the situation, and not getting emotionally involved. Detachment doesn’t mean “not caring.” We can still love them, we can still be in relationship with them, but by choosing to get off that bad rollercoaster ride, we will be healthier. Another critical piece to Robin’s path to becoming a Girl Boss was investing in herself and building a foundation. It also helped immensely to partner with someone who could take her “back seat” projects, letting go of those tasks, and relieving her of stress and a huge emotional energy drain. There’s so much to our conversation, but by understanding who she is and accepting it, stepping back from unhealthy things and allowing more space for the good stuff, Robin has discovered she can be the best version of herself. This episode definitely highlights some essential pieces to getting off on the right foot when you are following the Girl Boss pathway. Thanks again for listening, I appreciate it so, so much! An absolute A-plus student who has recently bossed up big time! That’s how I would describe my special guest today, Nadia Ahrens of Transform The Shit Out Of Your Live. She is one of my star Lady Boss clients, a close colleague, and an ENFJ twin. I grill her on what it took for her to change her mindset around her business and make some impressive changes. “If you find that you’re saying the same thing over and over your clients, then you’ve got a message.” She and I love a good role reversal because, in fact, she was my supervisor when I was a brand-new psychotherapist. One of the appealing reasons why she decided to sign up for coaching with me was that as a former psychotherapist with a full practice, I knew her exact business pain point. The big shift for Nadia came after she realized that she was stuck in her therapy business, just like I had been 5 years ago. Working one-on-one with clients reaches a point where you run out of time, run out of energy, and max out with your ability to create more income…and freedom. During this interview, Nadia and I detail the baby steps she was able to follow which allowed her to clarify her message and a dramatic increase in her ability to work with more people. She began leveraging her time and value, growing her business exponentially in a relatively short time. Nadia is a perfect example of somebody who is wicked smart and who can build a successful practice on their own, but literally couldn’t see outside of her immediate reality. And I think there are a lot of entrepreneurs out there where that is the case. It was the case for me, too. That’s why I always have a coach, why I’m hiring new people and doing new things. It’s is because we get to a certain spot and we can’t see past that. We need help to take the blinders off. You don’t know what you don’t know and moving past this unconscious incompetence is HUGE. As our eyes are opened to the new opportunities and options we begin to have “A-ha!” moments. Nadia began to have these moments as her mindset shifted, and when we paired this with a systematic approach to growth, success was inevitable. One of the biggest challenges I see with any desired change, especially with “creatives” is that we want this shit to happen yesterday. We’re damn impatient, and once we see the light we want it all and we want it now. But before we can have the fun throw pillows and funky decorations, we need to build a foundation for our house. It’s the same in business, and this is where Nadia discovered it’s time to slow down, do the “baby steps,” focus on the things in her Front Seat and outsource the stuff in her Back Seat. And then, when you trust in the plan and stick to it, stay consistent and don’t waver, it just works. “Also, going back to the therapy and coaching thing, there is only so much growth you can expect from somebody who’s paying a $20 copay.” We begin to close out this conversation with a mic drop from Nadia who attributes much of her success to the fact that she hired a coach and had some serious skin in the game. She wasn’t going to piss away the opportunity. It was time to put her money where her mouth was and get very conscious about her growth. Listen to this amazing conversation full of powerful takeaways, it will inspire you and open your mind to the possibilities, at least I hope it does. That’s my goal for this podcast, to help you move past your hurdles, write yourself a new life story, and reach your full potential, because you can! Thanks again for listening, I so appreciate it! A repeat performance? That’s right, today’s episode is the first replay I have done in six months since I’ve launched this podcast and there are reasons for the repeat episode: it is the 4th of July and it’s also my birthday. There is also a lot going on in my life and in my business right now. We at Front Seat Life HQ are about to launch one of the most exciting times in our entire year, the Front Seat Life event. And we have been diligently working on new, exciting content for you that I have been learning as well. I never do anything that I don’t also ask you to do as an entrepreneur. I always have a coach. I am always learning and learning new tricks to grow my business just as I’m teaching you to grow your business. The next eight weeks, all through summer, all of July, all of August and into September are going to be about the success path that I have learned about getting out your message and creating a successful business. So, as we go into the next eight weeks, I thought this was the perfect replay episode. I think even if you’ve already listened to it, I would encourage you to listen to it again. And if it’s new for you, I would very much encourage you to listen to this because as we go into summer, there will be resistance as we go into me teaching you about these eight steps and the success path and some of the things that I have just curated over the many years of doing this. You’re going to have some resistance. And this episode about your purpose and your passion and resistance is a perfect tee up for where we’re going the next eight weeks. I cannot wait to see you in the coming weeks. Enjoy the episode! Determination, passion, purpose, mindset… and not living five minutes in front of your face. My special guest Mandi Ann and I talk candidly about what it took her to find the ideal path for her journey. A path which delivered so much passion and purpose, she became determined to write her new book and grow her business, despite the resistance which showed up. We discuss how this devil (resistance) is always showing up, at every level of your journey… new level, new devil! But, if you can find ways to maintain your determination and focus, you can continue to move forward and upward. Revealing some of the common stumbling blocks, we go deep into the importance of setting boundaries to maintain a laser-like focus. Setting boundaries and prioritizing almost becomes easier when you have decided on your path. Mandi says, “I truly do think that when you find that purpose, that passion, you will set those boundaries and you just do anything.” And to continue to “do anything” can be really friggin’ hard when that damn devil keeps showing up with another challenge or roadblock. Mandi Ann and I tell some stories about the tough conversations we’ve had while setting boundaries, and I also let out of the bag my secret “dream job.” Listen to this golden nugget-filled conversation, take the time and make the moment to get quiet, to settle down, to allow yourself to be open to possibilities. Thanks again for listening, I so appreciate it! I am somebody who has always believed in milestones. I believe in celebrating. I believe in looking back at the things that you’ve accomplished. I believe that the best predictor of your future performance is your past performance and taking a close look at what have you accomplished, and asking yourself where are you still stuck? I have two really big weeks during the year that I choose to do some self-reflection, and the first is the week that’s coming up, which is my birthday week. It’s also the 4th of July, a holiday. And then also the week between Christmas and the New Year is always another very self-reflective time. I wanted to be super vulnerable with you today, as I always am, and talk to you about some of the biggest life lessons that I have learned this past year. It’s been an excellent year, but it’s also been an interesting year, one that I didn’t quite anticipate and so I want to share with you some of the things that I’ve learned. I have six main topics that I’ve been pondering and thinking about over the last couple of weeks or so as my birthday is quickly approaching and here is what I have learned. I think there’s probably more, of course, and these are the “Cliff’s Notes” here. Please listen to me as I go much deeper with each of these on this episode. Year of re-building. I’ve spent a good portion of this year looking at things differently and re-investing in myself and my business. Setting boundaries. I’ll be honest, I think sometimes you just got to do what’s best for you, no matter how selfish it seems. I have learned the power of presence and the power of choosing not to do ten different things at the same time, but being present to where I am in that moment. Theme words and manifestation. When you can focus on the things that you want through your vision boards, through your manifestation, through your theme words, it is amazing to me when they start to happen. And let them happen when they happen. Fiercely protecting my alone time. My alone time is critical to my success in my life and my business. It gives me time to think. It gives me time to process. It gives me time to look back. When I am over busy, I don’t have time to do any of that. Getting honest with myself. What’s working and what’s not? Taking a true inventory of all of the things in my life; my house, my time alone, my self-care, my intimate relationship with my partner, my relationships with my family and my friends… is this serving me? If you take away simply doing this exercise of asking yourself once a year on your birthday, what have I learned this past year? What tough life lessons? If I had to endure, what’s been good, what’s not been good, and what do I want to take from my past to propel me into my future in the best possible way? Thank you so, so much for listening, and I’m looking forward to the next few episodes with you guys. I’m going to go through all kinds of wonderful, amazing content with you! These three things have given me more time and freedom. Time blocking, rocks, and A-listers. Oh my. I have learned these from a plethora of different people in my life, and they have also kept my personality type sane and given me so much energy. People underestimate how much time they have available. They think they have so many more hours in the day and the week than they do. And what happens is we tend to over-schedule ourselves and live in a world of chaos, frustration, and irritation because we always feel “behind,” and our energy is scattered. It’s exhausting just thinking about it! So, this episode is all about how you can take your time back and get the most out of it by doing these three things: - Time Blocking: You only have 24 hours each day, you need to budget your time and prioritize. - Identify your Rocks: What are the most important things in your world? Make room for these first. - A-Listing: Friends, activities, and more. You must learn to set boundaries and say “no!” to those not on your A-List. I have learned that setting these boundaries, time blocking, figuring out what my rocks are, deciding who my A-list friends are and what my A-list activities are, creates space for the happiness and life I desire. What do I enjoy spending my time doing and can I say no to certain things? I promise you, the freedom that is going to come from doing this is going to change your life. I encourage you to just to practice, practice, practice over the summer. You could literally check in with yourself three months from today and ask yourself, “How much happier am I?” “How many things that no longer served me have I said goodbye to and what freedom, new activities, new relationships, new money, new things have come into my life?” All because you’ve learned how to time block, you’ve figured out what your rocks are, figured out your A-List and then said, “no.” All right, Front Seat Lifers, thank you for listening. I have five BIG lessons today that I would like to share with you in reflection of this somewhat monumental occasion for me, the eighth anniversary of my graduation from Graduate school. I am a big believer in looking back at the past and seeing how far you have come, and not just at the beginning of the year. I was prompted to share these five steps today not just because of the date, but I have a lot of big changes happening in my world and remembering how I got to this point really inspired me to share today’s episode. These are five of the main things that I’ve realized I have learned over the last eight years since leaving graduate school: Letting go of the old and allowing the new. Stepping into the unknown and feeling what that feels like. Dreaming and planning. Visualizing, hanging out with like-minded people. Your. Ass. Off. Creating a new life takes new takes “new.” Act accordingly. You’re going to want to listen to this episode because it has some mojo. I reveal what I understand, what big lessons I’ve learned by looking back at the last eight years and drilling down to the essence of what has really moved the needle for me. These are the steps that have taken me from quitting my dreadful job, finding my path, getting into graduate school, opening my office and having one $10/week client, to pure awesomeness today. Looking back on those eight years I can hardly believe it, and could not have predicted it. But I was able to bring it into reality… with the help of these five steps. Thank you again for listening. I hope that this has been helpful. I love bringing you this content. Please share this if it’s inspiring and you feel like it’s worthy and let me know how this is impacting you. As always, if you ever want to reach out or DM me or send me a message or send me love or something, I would love to hear from you. Journaling is not just some “woo-woo” bullsh!t, it’s for real. And today I’m going to reveal to you the three REAL reasons why I journal… and why you should too! I gotta be honest, I get massive, massive pushback… probably from between 90 and 98% of my clients, I get massive pushback on journaling. People don’t get it. They don’t want to do it. And I am here to tell you for the entrepreneurs, for the leaders in the world, for those who Jeff Olson calls the “Five Percenters,” if you want a more engaged and richer and more intimate and more successful and more authentic life, you have to start the practice of journaling. Period. End of story. Nobody, I know that it’s successful… The Tony Robbins’, the Gay Hendrick’s, the Orpah’s, the former Steve Jobs… All these people will say one of the secrets to their success is that they start every morning with a morning practice. And part of that morning practice is journaling. So, listen to this power-packed episode which I hope inspires you to either start journaling or up your game with your current journal habit, because it’s a total game-changer. I am, as always, insanely delighted to come to you and I’m so honored that so many of you are spending your valuable time listening and engaging. Are you like spaghetti or waffles? This might sound bonkers, but stay with me here as I jump into the world of COMPARTMENTALIZATION. Zone of Genius? Zone of Excellence? WTF are those? Sara and I go deep today into defining these concepts. And we detail how we can get caught in our comfort zones sometimes, sticking to our Excellence and avoiding the discomfort that is required to push through to get to our Genius. This wonderful conversation with Sara Dean, host of the Shameless Mom Podcast and Academy, reveals so many of the struggles we can run into as our businesses grow and require us to take on new roles, new duties. What so many of us do is jump in and think, “I got to do it all. I gotta do everything.” But that just won’t work. Sara and I talk about how we often need to allow our Zone of Genius to evolve and how it is so important to listen to your body, which can often show you through somatic response what you should be focusing on, and what you need to be delegating. Staying in your Zone of Excellence can feel great! You feel successful, you’re doing the things you are good at and it’s so comfortable… which is why so many get stuck there. But to grow and reach new levels, you must push past this and get uncomfortable. Sara says, “I do the scary things and I have this firm belief that anyone can be Oprah. Oprah is not special. She is uniquely talented at what she does, but she’s not special. And all of us have those things in us.” We have all these people that we look up to and we think, “Oh, well someone’s already doing that, and they have 7 million followers and a six-figure or seven-figure business. Why even bother? And we look at that and we don’t even try. And I think that for me, what I continue to tell myself is that anyone can be Oprah.” “But you have to take the steps every single day. You must do the uncomfortable things. So I’ve just shown up and done the uncomfortable things over and over and over again. This episode is packed full of inspiration and wisdom, and it all starts with your belief that yes, you can. You must listen to this one, it’s a doozy. I’ll leave you with one final bit of awesomeness from Sara. You know I’m a huge proponent of a Morning practice, and Sara is too. However, when she first tried writing morning affirmations, she admits she thought it was “ridiculously cheesy.” But now, after some practice and consistency, she says, “What I do is every morning when I write them, it gets me excited about what I’m going to do that day and it makes me immediately step into my power and recognize and acknowledge the direction that I’m going.” Thanks again for listening, I so appreciate it! I hope this will help you to step into your power, and get you excited about the direction you are headed! “I’m about to go on a Rampage, quite honestly, this summer, like a straight up rampage to help people have the best summer of their lives.” I’m going just going to keep it real right up front. What I’m going to talk to you about today is potentially going to just blow your mind. This is especially for the “J’s.” That’s not true. This is for everybody. But this shit today is, is a little off the hook. I remember learning about this and having it be potentially one of the most validating things I’ve probably ever learned. Learning about my personality type, the “J” personality type, which is 50% of the population, and how we react during weird, wonky, unstable summer energy. When I learned this from Jenny Dawn, understanding that the summer comes with unstable “seasonal” energy because when summer comes, it’s this “free time,” which we feel as kids when suddenly school’s out and the days are long, and we get to play! When we are in winter, we’re obviously hibernating, we’re closed in. This is a time to really work plans for our lives and doing all those things to take care of ourselves. That way when spring comes, we flourish out of those ideas and those ideas start to grow and they start to come out of us. Then we go into summer and summer is this unstable wonky energy. Technically there isn’t a lot of productivity going on, but that is what this Front Seat Life “Summer Challenge” is all about. Because we can be productive, we can, and we need to because it’s three months out of the year. So, this Summer Challenge is to help you stay on track during this time. These are all things that we seem to somewhat abandon in the summer. I hope and pray that you will stick with me over the summer because today’s episode, I hope, is helpful in just validating the wonkiness of summer. The biggest thing is keeping that schedule, understanding who you are, and being unapologetically who you are. Go to my website at for more information about the Book Club, and my event in September, and of course, stick with me for this challenge. The Front Seat Life Summer Challenge is about showing up and continuing to be unapologetically who we are, to not do stuff that we suck at, to not pretend that we suddenly change in the summer, and to stay productive. And the way that we need to stay productive is to have a schedule that we stick to, to get some sleep, to still do self-care, to have fun, to compartmentalize, and to make sure that we’re really, really clear about our life, love, and business goals. Again, I don’t know what this summer bullshit is, we just throw everything out the door and take the whole summer off, and then come September you’re three months behind. I want to help you stay on task and I’m on a crazy passionate kick right now about wanting this to be the best summer of your life, to own who you are, to learn to, to have the best business, to have the best fitness and wellness and relationships of your life. I hope that you will join me all summer long and I can’t wait. Stay focused. Stay in your brilliance being unapologetically who you are and thank you so much for listening. “It’s when sh#t like this comes up… when you are stressed out, when you want to punch someone in the face for eating popcorn and they’re not doing their job… and you realize: I could be putting my talents to better use.” All right Front Seat Lifers, this is a very special episode today. I have my very favorite person in the entire world on the podcast, my sister Erica. We pretty much hated each other during our teenage years, I think, as most girls did. But since then, we are the best of friends, deeply, deeply in each other’s lives. So much so, that when I started my coaching groups and my business a few years ago, my sister was my helper. I always had this vision of her being a part of my business for some reason. She’s funny, she’s engaging. She has an unbelievable work ethic. So, when I started doing my group programs, she was my helper. She was organized, she greeted people, she just loved on them. She was brilliant at it, absolutely brilliant at it. The lovely and incredible side effect is that she sat in the back of the room working, doing diligence, being of service to all my clients for about two years and inadvertently heard everything that I was teaching them. Subconsciously, all of this stuff kind of seeped into her beautiful mind and all of a sudden one day she called me and said, “I think I want to start my own dog walking business.” And I think my reaction was, “It’s about f-ing time and hallelujah, praise God!” because it was so obvious. She’s been a dog and cat lover, and animal rights activist since she was born. It seems like she just kind of came out of our mama loving on animals and wanting to be of service to animals. It wasn’t just such an easy transition. She’s a hard worker, she’s organized, but she just needed, I think to hear the stuff that I was saying about how you can leap, that you can do the hard work. It’s not going to be easy. It’s going to take effort. She had to work two, three, even four jobs to make it happen, but the next hour is really the story of how this person in my life that I love so much made the leap. She left her shitty corporate job and made the leap and how she’s making more money and so much happier. I know how many of you are listening right now that are in the exact same situation my sister was in and that you feel like you can’t do it. You don’t have the blessing from your family. You don’t know how you’re going to do it financially. And I’m here to tell you it’s not going to be easy. Erica had to run herself ragged just as I did and every entrepreneur I know does, and then at some point, “Oh my God, I can do this.” I hope that you will sit down, listen to this episode. Yes, it’s a leap and yes, it’s terrifying, but when you can make that move and you’ve proven to yourself you can do it, you will feel as light as a feather. Or as Erica says, as light as one of the Olsen twins. This is why so many of you are listening to this Front Seat Life Podcast and staying motivated and inspired in your life because so many of you want the same thing that my sister was able to do. Thank you so much for listening and enjoy. “I have for sure had dog poop in my hair, maybe under my nails. It’s raining a week straight and it’s still a better scenario for me than the best day as a state worker. The worst day as a dog walker will forever be better than the best day as a state worker.” – Erica To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/. Who are you, where are you going, and how are you going to get there? These words came from when I was in graduate school. We were given some homework that summer before we started, and I read this book and it had those three lines in that book. Who are you, where are you going and how are you going to get there? And I specifically remember where I was. I lived in Issaquah, Washington at the time and I was at a park. It was a gorgeous sunny afternoon and I was reading at the park and at that moment I just had an epiphany, a light bulb kind of moment, a sad moment. Front Seat Lifers, I have been taking you on a journey. For the past several months we have been focusing on who you are and how you show up in the world. And understanding the personality types of those around you, and how they are showing up and how this impacts your relationships. That first question of “Who are you?” is so important, along with understanding your family of origin, your traumas, your personality type, and your core values. These things in our lives that don’t change and then the things that we can work on in relationships with other people. And it all comes down to really being the best version of ourselves. Being in our Front Seat, living our lives from the Front Seat and then showing up and being unapologetically who we are. And once we have a pretty good idea to this “Who are you?” question, we can begin to try to answer another whopper. So today marks a big day, a big day because we are transitioning from the “Who are you?” into the second question, which is “Where are you going?” That day in the park was a pivotal moment in my life. I was in my mid-thirties and I didn’t know who I was. I had lost myself in my marriage, lost myself in my career. I had lost my identity or maybe I never found it. And I sat there not only trying to figure out who I was but trying to answer this question, “Where was I going?” I started for the first time in my life to have a clear direction. I had signed up for graduate school. I had quit my job. I knew some about where I was going, but quite honestly, I was somewhat living about two or three months in front of my face. I didn’t necessarily have a long-term vision yet. With today’s episode, we will begin to explore this tough question and I will help you begin to find clarity in your path. Once we have the vision, we will begin to fill in the necessary steps to get there, but this is the start. I want people to quit settling and start thriving. It makes me so sad when I watch people settle, to not have a plan, to not have any idea where they’re going in their life. Because here’s a fact. This is a fact. If you do nothing different, you can expect the same exact results. Those visions that I had starting back then on that park bench are now happening and yes, it might take 10 years, it might take five years. Sometimes it takes five days or five months. That’s the part that I know that we are not in control over, but what we are in control over is what we do about it. And until you know the “why,” which is this vision for your life, all that stuff, you’re not going to do it. That is the importance of what we’re going to talk about today, and as we go forward. I hope today’s episode is inspirational for you, motivational, and I hope that you will go on this journey with me. If you want this summer to be a defining summer of your life, don’t let this summer go by like all the others and just waste it away. Join the Front Seat Life community. It’s the best investment you’re ever going to make. This summer is going to be an epic summer and I hope you will come along with us. I will see you next week. Thank you for listening. Any couples out there that are looking for better communication, really starting to understand each other’s personality types, your energy, how you make decisions, all the miscommunications… then this episode is for you. About six years ago I started this crazy process of starting this business called Front Seat Life and with the tag line “Be Unapologetically Who You Are in Your Life, Love and Business. I’ve been doing the life portion for about six or seven years. I have been doing the business portion for about four to five years and now I am taking all this information and putting it to use for relationships. And today’s episode is a recording of a webinar that I put together a couple of weeks ago. As a couple’s therapist, and as the work that I have done for all these years about figuring out who we are in this world, it must start with us. We really must learn how to put our own oxygen mask on first. I often see couples blaming their partner and pointing fingers, “You’re not doing this” and “You’re not doing that.” This was always amazing to me. They don’t know what to ask for. They don’t know how to ask for, or what they want, because they don’t know what they want because they don’t know who they are. So the first step of that is figuring out who you are, and to do that I love to use my favorite tool, the best tool I’ve ever found. And that is understanding your Myers-Briggs personality type. Once you know who you are, how you are showing up in the world and can recognize how your partner is showing up, an amazing thing happens. Clarity. It all becomes clear as to why someone says something or behaves a certain way, it’s just who they are. During this webinar I also talk about one of the interesting things we do, we oftentimes don’t show up as who we are. We suppress ourselves and we hide because we’re embarrassed, or we’re scared to get hurt. So, we suppress this part of us. We don’t show up fully who we are and end up pulling away from our partner. This is when it becomes critical to be open, be honest, and be who we really are. I reveal some important tools you can use to help with this important step and share some stories from different perspectives and outcomes. I also share why we tend to fall for our opposite, why this can cause challenges later in our relationships, and why this can be a good thing if you can figure out this “being yourself” piece while communicating effectively with your partner. I also mention the ‘ladder of inference’ where our made-up stories can get us into trouble. And we all do this! But, don’t worry, it’s a fairly easy problem to solve and I give you some tips on how you can head off your troubles at the pass. Enjoy today’s episode which is absolutely jam-packed and filled with information that I know will enhance your relationship. And it is just my absolute pleasure to be able to give you this content to hopefully enhance the love and acceptance in your relationship and joy. As always, thank you for listening, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/. Being unapologetically who you are in your relationship, what does this mean? How is it related to personality type and what impact can this have? I am joined by my dear friend Lisa Fischer today to have a candid conversation about this powerful topic. If you haven’t been following along, over the last several episodes I have been transitioning from being unapologetically who you are in life to being who you are in love. Showing up and being your authentic, true self regardless of what other people think, even your partner. When you show up this way, sometimes people accept it and sometimes people don’t. Both Lisa and I have gone on journeys when we started being unapologetically who we are within our relationships. Each of us ended up on very different paths and this episode is all about what happened and how you can translate our experiences into your own and learn from them. When anyone commits to a long-term relationship, things can happen which prevent you from figuring out who you really are and showing up that way. We get busy with work or family and time flies by, suddenly we are left wondering, “Where am I? Who am I? And am I being my true self and is my life congruent with who I am?” We can find ourselves shutting down and settling for a life that isn’t the one we had hoped or planned. I know this feeling. I think every single marriage in America for sure, possibly the world, knows this feeling. At one point we all stopped getting real because we’re a little bit “walking on eggshells.” We’re nervous, we’re scared, we’re protecting our own hearts, we’re protecting our person, and something happens. And if we stopped really being who we are, we stopped having our voice. Honestly, it’s often after a period of this kind of existence, sometimes years or even decades, that it becomes important to be able to communicate our needs and desires and be able to be our true self. What happens then? Listen as Lisa and I share our experiences, both very different yet similar at the same time. And much of the outcome is determined by our personality type, and our partners type as well. If you are in a long-term relationship, there are some potent lessons to be gleaned from our raw and honest chat. These are struggles we all go through, and it is important for your health, well-being, and happiness to be who you are, and to be able to show up unapologetically as that person in life and in love. Thank you so, so much, I appreciate your time and thank you so much for listening. To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/. David is back to discuss, and to quiz me, about masculine and feminine energy, how these show up in each and every one of us, and some of the many challenges we navigate in a relationship related to these two powerful forces. We get super vulnerable during our conversation, both of us sharing some stories and feelings which help spotlight the impact of these energies within a relationship. “I’m really good at gathering berries, you’re good at stabbing bears, let’s make a team.” For the most part, this is how these two energies revealed themselves until recently in our history as a species, somewhat of a caveman-style connection to ourselves and our partners. But the world has changed dramatically, and many women are now much more masculine, for one reason or another. And there a lot of men out there who just don’t know what to do with that! In our go, go, go world where gender roles are sometimes reversed, we often become confused as to what behaviors or reactions are now appropriate…or desired. Especially when we have to deal with perceived roles and societal norms that might cause conflict or contradiction. I want you to understand that we all have masculine and feminine energies and I want you to also understand that it is tied directly to your personality type. Also, during this episode, we talk about how there cannot be two masculine energies or two feminine energies at the same time. It just doesn’t work that way. The biggest takeaways for you my dear listener: 1. The awareness of masculine and feminine energies. 2. How are you showing up in your masculine and feminine energies? 3. And, it’s not about masculine energy being strong or feminine energy not being strong, it’s just that two different energies exist within the same person. And to successfully navigate a relationship and these energies, it takes trust and respect. There is a lot to this conversation and discussion, so please listen in for the goods and some inside dirt on both me and David. As always, I appreciate your time and willingness to listen, thank you so, so much. To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/. We have been transitioning from “self” into “other.” Last week's episode was about understanding your partner's energy, introversion and extroversion, and understanding how your energy is different from your partner's. And today we are continuing this relationship conversation and I am going back to my therapy roots, I'm putting my therapy hat on. I used to love doing couples therapy, I loved high conflict couples. The Sensing and Intuition dichotomy was one of the biggest ones that would come up notoriously and repeatedly in my work as a couple’s therapist as well as in my own relationships. And today I am going to be highlighting the need for variety. Some of us crave it and some of us, the majority of us…not so much. Probably more than any of the other dichotomies, this is the one that we misunderstand the most. And we also judge the most. We judge other people. We don't understand how they don't see things the way that we see them. That's really what this episode is about. I'm digging in deeper about the need for variety and how that can impact relationships. I use some powerful examples from my years as a therapist and from my own personal experiences. These will help you understand that this is who you are innately and then help you understand your partner. And once we are there, we can communicate with each other so that you can quit pathologizing each other, right? This is what we do, “What's wrong with you? Why aren't you more like me? Why can't you do this? Why?” Let's just start having open fricking conversations about this as a couple that loves each other instead of, “What's wrong with you?” If you are currently married or in a partnership, I urge you more than any other dichotomy to learn about this so that you don't go down this rabbit hole and make the mistakes that I've made in my relationships. “I'm not going to try to change you and you don't try to change me.” I hope that this episode is helpful for you in terms of seeing the different variety of needs within a relationship based on the Sensing and Intuition dichotomy. I love, love, love sharing this with you, I hope this was helpful and I can wait for next week. People, next week is going to blow your effing mind, so keep listening. I am continuing to talk about things “other” related. As you guys know, this whole podcast is about living your life from the Front Seat, about being unapologetically who you are in your life, love, and business. I have been talking about the self, being unapologetically who you are, understanding your “side of the net” differentiation, what your opinions are, what your personality type is, how you show up in this world. And last week we transitioned over into the “other.” The “other” part of who are you is this piece of how we're in relationships with people because none of us live in a silo. We live in the world, and everybody has somebody in their life. And those are the people that we must now “attune” to. Once we understand who we are in this world, this is how we show up, this is what we believe, our opinions, but we can't always be selfish. That is a very one-sided way to live. But we also can't always be attuned, which means you are super codependent. If you were always attuned, you would be always worrying about others. I know there's probably some of you listening who are like, “Oh shit, that's me.” The attunement piece is how we have a healthy, let me be very clear about that, a healthy balance between “self” and “others”, between “differentiation” and “attunement”. This episode is about how you get attuned to other people in your life, specifically around the introversion and extroversion dichotomy. Half of the population is introverted, half of it as extroverted. And on this episode, I talk about how when you are in a relationship, how you can understand your partner's energy. When we can understand each other’s energy within a relationship, we can grow and find those times and experiences that energize each other. And not get all weird about those times when our partner wants to do something we would rather not do, something that makes us feel exhausted just thinking about! I give some good examples and even strategies on how to communicate with each other, so you can be attuned and stay energized. Thanks again for listening! I super appreciate your time! Today's topic is codependency. Oh Wow. That's a doozy. For those of you who have never heard about codependency before, this is one of the biggest topics that has impacted my life as well as my business. The next two months we are diving into self and others. If you are coming into this and you haven't listened to episode 8, I would suggest going back and listening because that is really about the balance of self and others. Today and in the next several episodes, and last week's episode too, I talk about transferring into the other. Because we don't live in a silo, we don't live in a world where it's just us, there are all these other people in the world... Our sisters and our brothers and our spouses and our kids and our significant others and friends. We live in this world of others. Although the next few episodes I will be referencing romantic relationship, you can really relate this conversation to pretty much any relationship in your life. Today's episode is a bit of a butt kicker. I really get going at the end of it, so stay tuned for that. I know you're going to enjoy it. This topic of codependency is something that I will continue to cover, but today is really an intro into it and it is essential. Learning about this, learning about how we interact and then what it means to have healthy detachment. You've probably heard the saying stay on your side of the net or stay on your side of the fence. This is what codependency means and I think of it as a tennis court. Think of it as two sides of a court and in the middle is a net and any time two people are in a relationship, whether this is siblings, mother, daughter, parents, your children, obviously your intimate relationships, your partner, co-workers... This is any relationship in your life and how we show up in those relationships. Imagine someone you're having trouble with, but they are on the other side of the net and you're on one side of the net - healthy detachment. A lot of people think detachment is a negative word, but healthy detachment is an excellent thing. Listen to this episode and I'm going to describe what that looks like as well as what unhealthy attachment looks like. Where things get tricky is most people have some form of what's called codependency. I'm going to describe those two different forms of codependency, what happens, and what to do about it. I'll never ever forget when I learned about codependency and how much it was just like a light bulb going off. It was just straight up a huge light bulb. It was just so incredibly eye-opening. And since that day I have been continuing to use it and play with it and love it and have it change my life and I believe it will do the same for you. So enjoy today's episode. We are making a big move, from “self” to “others.” We do not live in a silo. We do not live alone. We live with others and one of the best models that I ever learned was this model of attunement and differentiation. And that's what today's episode is going to be all about. Today I want you to listen in as I explain this model and tool. I want you to imagine an infinity symbol. This is not a line for a reason because you're not one or the other, you’re kind of going back and forth. You're floating, if you will, to one side or the other and at times landing in the middle, between differentiation and attunement. Let's start with differentiation. This is what we've been kind of digging into so far, figuring out who are you in this world. Being unapologetically who you are, right All the things I love to talk about to help you figure out who the hell you are in this world. On the other side of the infinity symbol from differentiation is attunement, which means “others.” How we attune to others. And again, I want to be very clear that this is an infinity symbol, not a line. You will go back and forth along this path between differentiation and attunement. If it was just a line, you could stay over there forever and that's how people lose themselves. They lose themselves in their children's lives. They lose themselves in the relationship. They lose themselves in their work and they forget to dip back over onto the other side. Everyone wants to be heard. And if we start to hear someone, we can begin to see them for who they are, or they can hear us and see us for who we are. And that all leads to love. When people start to be heard and seen for who they really are, then the last thing is the most powerful. And this is all about attunement and being loved, loving others and being loved. Don't we do that all the time, right? “Love me for who I am.” Yet we go through this world trying to change other people. We try to make them who we want them to be or why aren't you doing this my way? Instead of getting curious? HSL: All I want in life is to be Heard, Seen and Loved. And I think that's what everybody wants in our life. This description just scratches the surface, I hope you can listen because if you need to hear this, you need to hear this. What is our job? It is our job to complete ourselves and go into relationships as a whole person. Nobody else can do this. Someone else cannot “complete” us, and this can be hard, very hard. Especially for women because we, as caretakers, can struggle with our “side of the net.” I use a tennis court as an analogy and on one side of the net is ourselves, and we need to make sure this side of the net is filled in and whole for us to properly find attunement with others. During this episode, I pose a series of powerful and introspective questions. I guide you through them to help you think about how you can complete yourself and build your side of the net. The ultimate goal is to find a way to improve our relationships with ourselves and to do that we must know what we truly want as human beings. Who are you and what are your opinions? What do you want and need out of a relationship? How about in your life? What are your core values? Not what everyone else has told you that you should do or should think. What are your goals and what do you want to do with your life? And what is the best version of yourself? I share my thoughts on these questions and my favorite “go to” tools and exercises to help me find the answers to these tough questions and moments when I am not my best self, but in my back seat. The power of building your side of the net and understanding who you are is so important, you don’t want this to be dictated by others. Please listen and consider some of the tools I use and suggest you use, they all have been proven to help you discover the who your authentic self is, and to unapologetically that person, which is such a joy. Thanks again for listening, I appreciate your time and encourage you to share this with others if you know someone who might find value from the podcast. Welcome, Front Seat Lifers! We are on week four of the dichotomies. We have been talking for the last four weeks about introversion, extroversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging and perceiving. And today's episode is one of my all-time favorites that I will probably ever do a because it is about my favorite dichotomy which is judging and perceiving. If you need to go back and understand what judging and perceiving is, just scoot back to episode one and two. But a tiny little recap: it is how we'd like to be organized in this world. And the population differential is about 50/50. But this dichotomy is one of my favorites because there are so much juiciness and richness in it. Today's guest is David Walthew again, he's been on several episodes because he's such a great example of somebody who was in my life and we were complete opposites in this area. In fact, he was an ex-boyfriend of mine. Part of the demise of our relationship is because we were so different in this area. I think you're going to enjoy the stories and you'll learn a lot about yourself through David's stories and through my stories about what it's like to be in a relationship with the exact opposite person. So as strong “J's”, we are very organized, more decisive decision makers and a bunch of control freaks. We like things our own way. We like to be in control of ourselves and other people and everything around us. “P’s” are much more “go with the flow.” They are undaunted by surprise. They're like, “don't worry about it, we'll figure it out.” And we drive each other crazy. “P’s” drive “J's” absolutely crazy because they are people who live five minutes in front of their face. They don't do a lot of planning and they just really go about the world in this beautiful, easy, breezy kind of way. And then there's the “J’s” and we obviously drive “P’s” crazy because we're a bunch of control freaks and we need to know what's the plan, where are we going, what's happening, what's going on in our lives. And when you can see these differences in a friendship like mine and David's, I think you can learn a lot. Thank you so much and enjoy the episode. Hello everybody, welcome. This is Jessica Butts, your host of the Front Seat Life Podcast, and today I have interviewed two different people to really highlight the dichotomy of this week's episode, which is Thinking and Feeling. This is one of the most interesting dichotomies because it is very gender biased as well as societally bias. Back in the eighties, John Gray wrote this book called Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus and unknowingly I think he was really talking about this idea that most men are Thinkers and most Women are Feelers. In fact, 66 to 75 percent of men are Thinkers and 66 to 75 percent of women are Feelers. So as a psychotherapist, I've always been so curious about the other 25 percent. These are the marginalized people in our society. The people who end up feeling left out and different and weird and unusual, and “Why doesn't anybody get me?” And those happen to be my two different guests today. First, I talk with Lindsey, a thinking woman, and an INTJ. She explains her perspective on what has been like for her to grow up as a Thinking woman in our society. And then I chat with David, who has been on another episode before, and his experience is especially fascinating, I think. Because he is a Feeling man who, in almost all his intimate relationships, has been with Thinking women and he was also raised by a Thinking woman. And so, it's fantastic getting his perspective on this. I think you're going to learn a lot about your own type. You're going to learn a lot about opposite types, and I hope you become informed and educated in a whole new way. So, enjoy. To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/. Hey there, welcome back! Come and join me as a fly on the wall while my good friend (and former boyfriend) David and I discuss what life is like as an Intuitive. We both realized at some point, it took some time believe me, that being an Intuitive, despite it making us complete weirdos, is our greatest asset. Why? Intuitive people have this amazing power to see patterns of behavior which the other 75% remain oblivious to…. Huh? What? Listen in as we explain… If you remember, 25% of us are Intuitives and the rest are Sensors. The 75% who are Sensors like to have all the details, the plans, the facts, they are very concrete. They tend not to believe in “gut feelings” and seem to focus on why something can’t be, listing out a big pile of reasons. We Intutives often “just know” something and believe it is possible. I call the Sensors “the Police” and David refers to them as “Security Guards” and Intuitives often don’t fit well into this “Muggle World,” which I must point out it the world we live in, created by most of us, that 75%. We have a hard time because Sensors don’t understand us and we just can’t explain it to them, what it is to feel and be an Intuitive. So, listen to this episode as we tell stories and share what it feels like to grow up and live in a culture created by Sensors which does not reward Intuitives. It is an interesting dilemma and I thank you so much for joining us on this exploration! To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/. In this episode, I, a devoted extrovert, sit down with two wonderful people who are leaning towards the introverted side of things. Stephanie and Jeni have agreed to join me today to share some stories about what it is like to be an introvert in an extroverted world. I believe our conversation brings some interesting insights into the "Introverted" dichotomy, some of the challenges and beautiful elements as well. The perspectives we all are able to share about the two dichotomies is definitely illuminating and fascinating...at least I think so! Listen in and I think you will find something that applies to your own experiences or to those of your co-workers, friends, and family. Hello, I'm so glad you are back, this episode piggybacks onto Episode 1. If you haven’t heard that episode yet, please consider going back and listening, it will help everything in this installment of the show make so much more sense. In this episode, I reveal a framework, an analogy I personally came up with to help explain the Meyers-Briggs personality types and how they show up within ourselves. I needed to find a way to help people really understand and grasp the nuances of each type, and why we want to choose to put most of our energy into our “best self.” Thank you so much for listening and being here, I so appreciate you taking the time. Welcome back to the Front Seat Life Podcast! Hello, I'm so glad you are here. This is the episode where we start to get into the "meat" of the show and I can't wait to share. You'll find out where that comes from during this episode as I start to unpack my fascination with Meyers-Briggs and what I mean when I say, "Live your life from the front seat!" My Obsession I have been obsessed with the Meyers-Briggs personality type indicator since I was about 20 years old. I was working as an HR director and we had this Meyers-Briggs experience at work and I completely had one of the "Holy Sh*t!" moments. So much in relationships and life became crystal clear. My obsession has led me to do a deep dive into the world of Meyers-Briggs throughout my career and in my personal life. I have tried to distill it all down into a format people can consume easily so they can understand it and get value from it, because that can be huge! I'm Shocked I am completely shocked to see how many people feel Meyers-Briggs is a bunch of "hooey!" When it’s one of the most amazing tools (if not THE most amazing tool) we must help us to understand ourselves and others in our life. I Hope This Helps This episode is meant to educate you on all things Meyers-Briggs in a way that I hope helps you to understand it, and how you can use it. I want this to be so relatable, that you can use your understanding to show up, unapologetically who you are in your life, your love, and your business. But this is not just about us, it's about understanding the people in our lives. More to Come, I Promise Please, please listen to this episode or go to our show notes on the website for more insight into Meyers-Briggs and how it impacts your world. And I promise you I will have many, many episodes going even deeper into each of the four dichotomies with stories and more. I hope this is eye-opening and educational because I want families to have these conversations, to be able to talk about these differences. And instead of being irritated by it, to be able to accept it and love it. My deepest hope is that you can use this to have better relationships with everyone in your life, everyone, including yourself. Let's start an epidemic of understanding ourselves, of being unapologetically who we are in this world! To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/. Welcome to the Front Seat Life Podcast! Hello, I'm Jessica Butts and I am so glad you are here! This is the first episode of my new podcast and I can't wait to share some amazing times with you. During this inaugural episode, I want to explain a little about who I am and what this podcast is all about, how it can help you be unapologetically who you are! I get completely vulnerable and honest while I share what has been going on as I re-invented my life and myself over the past five years. And how I have gotten to the point of this podcast you are listening to right now. Sometimes You Just Have to Leap I'm 45 now and in my late 30's I found myself ridiculously uninspired by my work. My marriage was also falling apart at the time and I felt like I was just wasting my life. I was merely surviving, not thriving...at all. I was jolted awake when my office was offering severance packages for voluntary layoffs...so I volunteered! I didn't even know what I was going to do next, no clue. I somehow ended up at a meeting with people who were doing what I wanted to do, what inspired me. And I realized after that meeting when everything started to fall into line, that you must pay attention to those moments when they happen to you. These are absolutely defining moments, especially when we choose to take them as a sign and act. I left my 20-year relationship, my career, all of it...with no money and no idea where I was headed. But I knew that what I was doing I couldn't keep doing... Something had to change. The 14 Things I Have Been Doing There are 14 things I have been doing to turn my life around, and I am sharing them all on this podcast. Today I am outlining these key principles, but in future episodes I will take a deep dive into them, to give you all the details, all the good stuff. All right, here they are: Codependency. I tell you what this means to me, and what happened when I realized I was codependent. Figure out who I was and what I wanted... Who am I when I am at my best? Take time to be alone. It's critical to take time to slow down, stop being so busy, and be alone. To be in alignment with your personality type and your core values as much as possible. Life is just easier when we do this but know this might require some big changes as it did for me. Get a coach, get a therapist, or get both. Find people to help you. Compartmentalization. A choice to give 100% of your energy to one thing at a time. Be all present and all in. To learn how to know my worth. I have value, what is it? Having a vision and plan for my life, aka Not living five minutes in front of my face. To set goals, long-term planning. Where am I going to be in five years? In one year? In 90 days? How about weekly and every single day? Like-minded people. Beware the "Muggle World." We must hang out with the people who are doing bigger and cooler sh*t than we are to keep us inspired and motivated. Systems, structure, and singular focus. These are the essential components of a successful life and business strategy. Don't listen to the naysayers, they will kill us. Be f-ing determined. When you don't have a trust fund, or a wealthy spouse, or other resources like that, do you know what you are? You are f-ing determined because there's no "Plan B." You must believe that you can do it. You don't have to know how you just must have that determination and believe that you can do it... The "how" will unfold. Those are the 14 things that got me from where I was... lost, broken, stuck, scared... to where I am now. It's not perfection, it's always evolving, but it's what I envisioned five years ago. And now, what I am dreaming of and working my butt off for is where I will be... You can do the same. To find out more about Jessica visit https://jessicabutts.com/.
