In this episode I talk about a viral tweet that I posted a few weeks back. I asked developers to share a beginner mistake they had when they FIRST started learning iOS development. I got answers from all kinds of well known developers from major companies. It was a lot of fun to hear that we all start somewhere. My goal for this video was to show beginners that even very senior developers made the same silly beginner mistakes that you are making right now. Again... we all started somewhere. Stick with it. My technical skills as a software developer with 5 years experience are average. They're fine. Nothing special, but not bad either. However, I believe I'm a REALLY good overall software developer because of very good soft skills. In this episode I want to discuss that topic for those developers out there who may be self-conscience about their lack (or perceived lack) of technical skills and knowledge. There's a lot more that goes into being a great software developer than just knowing the code. Last year I hired a Jr. iOS Developer as my replacement at a startup I was working at. I had the opportunity to review over 100 submissions for the position, and I got to see first hand how the vast majority of developers REALLY need some help when it comes to marketing themselves. Better Github repositories, resumes, websites, portfolios, app marketing pages, etc... It all needs works. In this video I discuss some of the thoughts after going through the process of hiring an iOS developer. In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Alphonso Sensley, iOS Engineer at Bank of America. In this story we get to hear about how he worked at Apple retail for a few years before getting curious about building products for Apple devices. He started learning like many of you... YouTube, Udacity, Treehouse, etc... We talk about how he built up a network on twitter and then utilized that network to get his first iOS developer contract and then eventually his first job at Bank of America. We also dive into how valuable mentorship can be for both the mentee and the mentor. Hope you enjoy! Origin Stories is a series of interviews with iOS developers from the community where we discuss how they got their start in this industry. We discuss how they first became interested in code, what resources they used to learn, how they got their first job and much more. In this vlog I talk about life as an independent iOS developer. Today I'm talking about the reasons why I moved away from San Francisco and Silicon Valley as an iOS Developer to pursue building my own business as a full-time content creator. I talk about needed more space for a dedicated studio as well as some personal reasons for wanting to be back on the east coast. I love San Francisco and intend on visiting at least once a year for WWDC. Chris has a very unique origin story since he transitioned from a Product Manager to an iOS Engineer, not only at the same company, but on the same team as well. In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Jane Chung, iOS Engineer @ Calm. This was a really fun episode because I've known Jane for a long time now, as she was my partner throughout the iOS Development bootcamp we did back in 2015. It was fun to look back on the app we built together during that bootcamp. Jane then moved on to be one of the fist full-time mobile engineers at Coinbase where she converted the app from Objective-C to Swift and rode the crazy crypto wave of 2017 all the way to Coinbase being the #1 app in the App Store for a period of time. Lots of war stories there... After leaving the crypto space, Jane is getting ready to embark on her next chapter as an iOS Engineer at Calm. Back in January of 2019 I put out a video (link below) asking people who had never had an iOS Developer job to apply for a new position at the startup I'm work at, Aluna. When I started my career someone took a chance on me when I wasn't quite ready, and it launched my career. I wanted to do the same for someone else. That someone is Chris and we sit down and recap his third week on the job as a Jr. iOS Developer. We talk about his impressions of startup life in San Francisco, what he worked on this week, as well as some thoughts on how having mentorship has drastically increased his skills in just a few short weeks. In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Jazbo, iOS Engineer at a 3D Laser Printer company called Glowforge. I was thrilled to finally get to sit down with Jazbo and hear his story. It was fascinating to hear how he grew up in Jamaica and never touched a computer until he was a teenager. After college he decided he wanted to learn software engineering and started watching videos online, which led to him joining the developer community on twitter. Through this network, he was able to land his job at Glowforge. Be sure to stick around for the end of the episode where we have a great discussion about how people have different hurdles in their path to becoming a software developer. Origin Stories is a series of interviews with iOS developers from the community where we discuss how they got their start in this industry. We discuss how they first became interested in code, what resources they used to learn, how they got their first job and much more. "What I'm Working On" is a weekly show where I give a quick recap of what I worked on at my day job as an iOS developer at a small startup in Silicon Valley. I hope this give some insight into what it's like to work for a small startup as the sole iOS developer. In this episode it was a surprise that I was even in the office on Monday, I talk about the HUT 4 kickoff meeting, and how sometimes weeks are just not overly productive. If this is your first What I'm Working On episode, be sure to check out the introduction episode for context as to what the Aluna app does. I have made the decision to forgo the opportunities at a large company and go "Full-Time" YouTube and content creation. I released a YouTube video on this, but it was a high level overview of how the decision came to be, and what to expect from my channel. In this episode, we got WAY deeper into my thought process on this big decision. In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Kaya Thomas, iOS Engineer at the mindfulness app, Calm. I got to meet Kaya in person a few weeks ago when we both gave talks at iOSCon 2019 in London. In this story we get to hear about how Kaya discovered coding while editing MySpace pages back in the day, which led to her trying out a intro to programming class in college. Her amazing networking led to some key internships at Intuit and Apple, and she ultimately landed her first iOS developer job at Slack here in San Francisco.
