When Dr. Wayman, a lifelong educator, took over at Strawberry Mansion, it had recently been named in the news as one of the most dangerous schools in America. In less than a year, she had turned the school around using a mix of no-nonsense pragmatism and radical empathy, successfully raising test scores and literacy rates year over year, as well as fostering community with her students. Now, she's bringing her unique approach and incredible wisdom to the podcast to talk about how to reach kids that everyone else has written off, and how you can apply these lessons to hard conversations with your own kids. If you're as inspired by Principal Wayman's work as we are, you can learn more by clicking here. This episode was inspired by a question from my friend Chris, who asked how to find motivation to keep going when you feel like you have nothing to go on. I sat for awhile with this question (thanks Chris) because it's something I've worked on and talked about for a long time but man, never has it felt so applicable to my life. I know each of you, even if you're not working through a divorce, are probably, have or have had a hard season you need to move through and move on from, so here are my ten motivation hacks that have helped me. I hope they help you too. Thanks for listening. Let's rise together. -- Dave's first-ever book, Get Out Of Your Own Way, is OUT NOW! Why do we allow this fear and dread for the future to control our present? During this season of change, Dave reflects on how to inoculate yourself against the things that scare you, one baby step at a time.

Rosemary Ketchum never wanted to run for office. However, when she looked around her community of Wheeling, West Virginia, she saw work to be done. Today she shares her story with us, starting with her work in mental health leading up to her historic win in her state. Along the way we touch on the difference between ignorance and bigotry, the recent historic rulings and what they mean for trans people in the workplace, and the surprising realities of campaigning in a state like West Virginia. Welcome to the new Rise Together. We wanted to start out on this new journey by having an open, honest, forgiving, uncomfortable, but above all hopeful conversation about race. In order to do that, and without centering ourselves in the narrative, we asked Dr. Ed Barron, a Diversity and Leadership consultant and Chair of the department of Leadership and Organizational Psychology at Azusa Pacific University, to appear on the show, which he graciously accepted. In this episode we get into it, from the way white supremacy robs all of us of our humanity to the common everyday occurrences that work together to oppress Black voices. If you're someone who wants to get involved with antiracism, but you're not sure how to take the first step, then this episode is definitely for you. Dr. Ed Barron was so generous with his time and expertise here on our show, we wanted to make sure we provided you with links to the resources he mentioned such as the Understanding Racism 101 digital guidebook, as well as how you can get in touch with him on his website or on Instagram. Are you lonely? It's a hard question to ask yourself, and an even harder question to answer. After all, some people spend a lot of time alone and aren't lonely, while others are surrounded by friends and family but feel alone every day. The good news is that this experience is universal - we all go through it, and it's just one part of a larger framework of human connection. This week on the podcast we have the unbelievable pleasure of welcoming Dr. Vivek Murthy whose work in the White House and beyond has focused on bringing empathy and connection to an increasingly disconnected world. We hope you get as much out of listening to this interview as we got putting it together. This week on the Rise Together podcast we’re bringing you one of the most powerful stories of resilience we have to offer - in our family, in our marriage, in our personal journeys as human beings on this earth. Our adoption story, like so many other parents’ stories out there, was anything but a straight line. Along the way it taught us a lot about what our family could achieve if we relied on our faith and each other to see us through. You’ve probably read Rachel’s words on this story before, but here in this episode you’ll get to hear Dave’s memory of the experience as an excerpt from his first-ever book, Get Out of Your Own Way, which you can get by clicking the link below! When we decided the theme for this week of the #Next90Days Challenge would be leadership, we knew exactly what to do After all, who better to speak to the lessons of leadership than the man who literally (literally? literally.) hosts the podcast... On Leadership. That's right, Scott Miller of Franklin Covey has returned to HoCo, this time to give advice on being humble, strategies to improve communication with your partner, and how generally to be a good leader, even when no one is watching. This episode was recorded before the pandemic began, but we think the lessons from the conversation are more relevant now than ever. This week on the podcast we're talking to Charles Duhigg, habit-making and productivity expert and the host of How To! with Charles Duhigg. Charles' book The Power of Habit has been one of Dave's favorites for a long time now, so when we got the chance to be guests on his show, we jumped at the chance! You can hear our episode of How To! by clicking here. Charles also graciously agreed to come on our show and chat with Dave all about habits-- creating habits, identifying the cues that lead us to create a habit, and how to recognize when a habit (though it might be a great habit for you) can negatively affect your spouse or partner. Guys, there's no better time than right now to examine your day-to-day routine and clean up the habits that are preventing you from becoming your best self! Sometimes, an opportunity reaches out to you from the universe at the exact moment you need it. That's what it felt like when we connected with Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt, who had a book come out the same week as Dave's - a remarkable piece of nonfiction called The Gift of Forgiveness. In it, Katherine interviews twenty people with incredible, challenging stories of forgiveness - including a few names you might recognize. In this incredible episode, we talk about the pain and the joy of forgiveness, how to start practicing forgiveness in your life (because make no mistake, it IS a practice), and the changes it can bring. Follow Katherine Schwarzenneger Pratt on Instagram for inspiring posts about animal friends, as well as info on her virtual book tour for The Gift of Forgiveness - available now! So come laugh with us while we talk through everything from how to rethink your social media intake to how to talk to your kids about coronavirus (plus some fun ideas for virtual birthday parties!). On this episode of the RISE Together podcast Dave sits down with athlete and motivational speaker Lewis Howes to give us insight on what it means to be a man embracing vulnerability in 2020. Whether that's Lewis showing a new side of himself to his partner in his relationship, or Dave embracing radical openness to new ideas and processes at work, or reflecting on the life of Kobe Bryant, one thing is for sure: our ideas about masculinity and fatherhood are changing, and in order to keep up, we need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Ladies, listen up: if you want your partner to open up and be more vulnerable with you, this is the episode to listen to. What if I told you that asking your partner this one question has the power to fundamentally transform your relationship? If you don't believe me, you will after listening to this episode. A relationship audit: we know it sounds like a scary thing, but in reality it could be the thing that saves your relationship, or the practice that transforms a solid foundation into a rock-solid one. This episode is a little different from what you're used to hearing on RISE Together, but we had an absolute blast recording it! That's because today we're talking with some of the mega-talented staff here at Hollis Co HQ about love, marriage, and singlehood in the 20-teens (is that what we're calling it?) Four of our hardworking teammates (including a couple you might recognize from social media or RISE conferences!) took time out of their busy schedules to get emotional, honest, and raw with us on topics ranging from how to use dating apps to how to help your partner be better in your relationship. This week, by popular demand, we're talking about confrontation styles. How do you fight with your partner? Do you aim to wound, or are you trying to find a peaceful resolution? Maybe your fighting style is to avoid fighting at all costs. Everyone's confrontation style is a little different, and oftentimes how we fight with our current partner is informed by the traumas of our past - past relationships, childhood modeling, and even media. This is a great episode to listen to with your partner as we dig into some hard truths and challenge YOU to get real about what you're holding onto and what you can stand to let go.--My new book Girl, Stop Apologizing is available now! Recently, we lost someone close to us. That loss made us reflect on our lives and what we hold as important. We can all get stuck in those negative emotions we associate with grief if we don't give them some sort of outlet. For us, that outlet looks like talking about it. How do we deal with grief? How can loss create a space in which to examine and reevaluate your own life? Are you proud of the life you're living? These are just some of the tough questions we cover today. At some point in time, every single one of you who listens to this podcast will deal with the topic of grief and have to address it in order to maintain healthy relationships in your life. This week for Rise Together we're discussing health based sabotage. We've defined and named four partner types whose behaviors can negatively impact your health journey, based on our own experiences. We hope that by outlining these archetypes, you can be more mindful of external behaviors that might keep you from focusing on your own health and fitness goals. Today on Rise Together, it's our anniversary! We've been married for an incredible 15 years this week, so it seems like a good time to look back over our relationship and spend some time discussing what we did right and wrong in all those years. We also try to impart some wisdom on our former selves. Our marriage is one of the greatest gifts in our lives, but it's also taken a massive amount of work and commitment on both of our parts to make it as strong as it is. So whether you're single, engaged, newlyweds, or deep into your journey, we hope you can take something away from this conversation. --My new book Girl, Stop Apologizing is available now! Today on Rise Together, we are so privileged to have Devon Still as our guest. Devon is a former NFL player who famously took the field after his daughter Leah's devastating pediatric cancer diagnosis and helped her fight her illness while bringing an unbelievable amount of attention to the cause and helping others in the same devastating situation. Devon talks to me about how he was able to walk alongside her after himself almost dying himself, and why he chose to bring her fight onto the field. Devon is an absolute inspiration and if you have ever had to lend you strength to someone with an illness, I think you'll find a lot of comfort in this interview. --Both upcoming RISE conferences are sold out, but Health + Wellness Day tickets for Minneapolis and Dallas are still available! Today on Rise Together we’re talking about something we’ve never discussed in detail with our audience, the incredible and emotionally-trying journey we took to adoption. In what ended up being 5 long years of our lives, we navigated both international and domestic adoption, becoming foster parents, and the complicated waters of state and national child-care agencies, all in the name of completing our family. It resulted in some of the toughest seasons of our lives but also the sweetest moments and we are so blessed to be able to share this story with you. If you’re interested in learning more about adoption or foster care, find as many people in your community who can share their story. Follow folks on social who share theirs like some of our IG favorites: @elsielarson, @thisgatherednest, @theluckyfewofficial and @adopttogether.National Angels (https://www.nationalangels.org) is an organization that walks alongside children in the foster care system, as well as their caretakers, by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building and mentorship. We mentioned Jen Hatmaker’s book Interrupted (https://amzn.to/2BW6sSv), it landed at a time to encourage our jumping into awesome interruption.  Our friend Heather Avis also writes the story of being called into adoption in her book The Lucky Few (https://amzn.to/2BY5EfT).—Red Alert! When we first started this very podcast, we made a wishlist of guests that changed the way we think about love and relationships. Dr. Gary Chapman was at the very top of that list. Dr. Chapman’s book “The Five Love Languages” has made a tangible and direct impact in our relationship, and we’re believers that Dr. Chapman’s wisdom can result in positive change in almost every relationship. We are incredibly excited and honored to have the author with us to talk about our personal languages, how that impacts our relationship, and some surprising applications for his brilliant work. On this week's Rise Together podcast, we’re digging into the opinions of other people, and how we dodge or sometimes even positively use the opinions of others. Of course you should take everyone’s opinion with a grain of salt, but no matter how much we say that, it’s never that easy. You may even find it influences some constructive growth in regards to how you’re showing up for the the people you love. Here is how we pick through both the positive and negative things we hear about ourselves every day.Exciting news: Rachel is launching a coaching series! As the end of the year approaches, we think it’s incredibly important to take stock of the highs and lows you’ve experienced as a couple over the previous 12 months. For us, it’s been one of the most eventful and meaningful years of our collective lives, and unpacking that was extremely insightful. This week, we dig deep into what we learned, what we loved, and what we hope to do better in 2019. Did you know the documentary of our live-event RISE is back in theaters on Jan 2 and Jan 9? On this week's Rise Together podcast, we're going to talk about the roles and identities we each take on in a relationship and how despite our best intention of how we hope to show up well for our partner, what we think they want may not what they really need. The roles and identities we as individuals in a relationship play evolve over the course of our partnership through stages and seasons of life. In a relationship that's interested in moving forward, letting go of who you are or who you were for who you'll become is something you need to work through and continually embrace, even as you're at times unrecognizable from where you started -- that's growth. Those changes show how a fluid you anticipates the needs of each other at specific times in life and in specific environments that surround you. You'll only be able to show up in a way that makes the most of your collective strengths if you're combining your individual strengths with the individual needs of your partner in a way that's informed by regular, transparent conversation, and that anticipates how life or seasonal changes may require a pivot where you or they take on a new role to create the strongest team.A special shout out to the greatest living author (according to her husband) Rachel Hollis who's Girl, Wash Your Face incredibly passed 2 million copies sold last week. For the first time ever on the Rise Together podcast, we're having an hour-long conversation about fatherhood -- what does it take to be a good dad in 2018? In a conversation with Larry Hagner, the host of The Dad Edge Podcast, Dave and Larry talk about raising 1,000 kids, how to keep the spark alive with your spouse while doing so, the myths around balance, the debate of giving kids what they want vs what they need and the biggest things they're hoping to impart on their small humans. If you're interested in hearing a good dude talk about fatherhood on the regular, check out Larry Hagner and his The Dad Edge Podcast here--> https://apple.co/2QeElXS A special shout out to the greatest living author (according to her husband) Rachel Hollis who's Girl, Wash Your Face incredibly passed 2 million copies sold yesterday. In this week's episode, Rachel and Dave surprise each other with the five gifts they're "giving" each other for Christmas this year in one of each of five categories: something the other needs, something the other wants, something the other can wear, something the other can read and something fun for intimacy in the bedroom. Also, this podcast was recorded 8 seconds after Dave and Rachel were arguing for 9 minutes, so it's off the rails in the best way from the first second. In the episode, we mention the Start Today Journals -- there is only one of three covers left, so if you're interested in grabbing the last cover in round two before the next covers arrive in March, hit this link --> https://bit.ly/2FMQ4rU Also, if you listen past the close, Dave sneaks a mention of the encore of the documentary Rachel Hollis Presents Made for More which is back in theaters Jan 2 and Jan 9. It's a rad way to see what a Rise event is like for the price of a movie ticket. If you like this show, we hope you'll tell your friends on social (using the hashtag #risetogetherpodcast), subscribe on the platform of your choice and leave a rating (unless you hate this, in which case, keep that to yourself, Pam)!

The opinions of outsiders can create havoc within a relationship. Just the word "mother-in-law" is likely to bring one or both of you into a heightened state of bickering. In this episode we have selected several excerpts from our live speaking engagements to delve into the mechanics of why opinions affect us and the methods we have used to drop this mental luggage off at the curb. (In the last segment Rachel was literally using luggage on-stage to make an important point.) Enjoy!

In today's episode Dave takes a solo mission deep into man country and tackles the four things men can't talk about to their partners. Guys whether you like it or not, these issues eventually crop up in every relationship. By learning to boldly identify them they lose their power to derail your marriage. Women, this is like getting a secret map to the very things that might be jamming communications. Dave is transparent and frank, and for that reason we don't recommend playing this podcast around little humans. We hope this episode will unlock freedom in your relationship, like it has in ours.
