Fact: Businesses with Women of Color and Black female CEOs get less than 1% of all VC funding every year. And when you consider that $85 Billion of VC funding was raised in 2017, the glaring inequality becomes very clear. However, Arian Simone is breaking the VC ceiling, stacking the odds back in her favor, and putting the dollars into the businesses who need it most with the Fearless Fund, a $5 million fund that invests exclusively in early-stage businesses run by women of color. The serial entrepreneur knows a thing or two about hard work, too. After being laid off from her job after graduating college, Arian went from living in her apartment to out of her car for almost a year. She eventually went on to build a successful PR and marketing firm from the ground up where she promoted Blockbuster films such as 007: Quantum Solace and worked with major companies from Sony Pictures, to Walt Disney Pictures.  In this week's episode, Jaclyn chats with the fearless entrepreneur on how she built multiple companies from scratch, how she’s tackling inequality in the VC world, and how Women of Color can get access to capital.  Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com. Aishwarya Iyer was working in Silicon Valley when a bout of stomach issues led her to research olive oil companies. What she learned was alarming--nearly 70% of olive oil consumed by Americans is rotten or rancid. Instead of ditching it from her diet, she decided to disrupt the market and start her own line of olive oil instead. Say hello to Brightland, an artisanal, small-batch extra virgin olive oil label produced in California on a single-estate farm. But the secret to her success isn’t just in the sauce (or the oil, in this case), it’s also in the packaging. Her approach strays away from the typical olive oil branding and replaces it with elevated designs and powder-coated bottles that stand out amongst the competition on the shelves. In this episode of WorkParty, we sit down with Aishwarya to learn about her Instagram-worthy bottle design, why she decided to bootstrap her business, and what it takes to disrupt an industry you have no prior experience in. Tune in to learn how you can master the art of the pivot and build a successful business that challenges the status quo. Fact: Women are severely underrepresented in the music industry. When the University of Southern California released their Inclusion in the Recording Studio report last year, they found that the ratio of male to female producers across 400 popular songs is 47:1. And this isn’t because women don’t have an interest in music. The female to male student ratio in music academics is almost 50:50. The high representation of female enrolled students simply doesn’t translate to the music industry workforce, particularly in leadership roles. But one woman is changing the status quo and bringing much-needed change to the outdated, male-dominated sector. Emily Lazar is the engineer behind the sound of music’s biggest names including Björk, Beck, The Killers, David Bowie, Sonic Youth, Sia, and Madonna, just to name a few! We're thrilled to sit down with the award-winning sound engineer to learn more about her story, how she went from “the other side of the glass” as a singer, songwriter, and performer into the studio to become one of the industry’s most prominent master engineers. The stats don’t lie. Companies perform better when they have female leaders in addition to males. And yet, just 5% of all venture funding supports women CEOs. This isn’t just about equality--it's about the economy, too. If we want to see higher stock returns, higher overall profit, and a higher return on equity, we have to hire women, and put them in leadership roles. Unfortunately, when you see how wide the gap is between where females are today and where we want to be, the path to equality can seem daunting. Thankfully, with people like Victoria Pettibone leading the charge, we are moving the needle towards an equal future. She strongly believes we can achieve this vision if we invest financially in female leadership now. In this episode, we sit down with Victoria to discuss how she’s doing just that as the managing director at Astia and why investing in women is investing in everyone, along with some solid advice for female founders on how to build a booming, crisis-proof business. Diversity matters, and more importantly, it's crucial. New research makes it crystal clear that companies with a more diverse workforce perform better financially. In fact, companies in the top 25% for gender and ethnic diversity at the executive level are more likely to have above-average profitability than companies in the bottom 25%. In short, having more diverse female executives equates to bigger share price gains, stronger revenue growth and higher profits—period. The stats don’t lie! We need an array of voices from various backgrounds, body types, races, and genders to contribute to the conversation if we want to push the culture forward. In this episode, we sit down with a passionate advocate for inclusive entrepreneurship, Carolyn Rodz, the founder and CEO of Hello Alice—the intelligent business advisor for entrepreneurs—to understand what our responsibilities are to keep the needle moving forward and make inclusion the norm, not the exception. Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com.   Guest: Carolyn Rodz, @carolynrodz @helloalice_com   Produced by Dear Media

So, you worked hard to climb the career ladder and land your dream job, but now that you’re there, your expectation doesn’t match reality. Or perhaps you got there and just changed your mind. Either way, it’s time to make a change, to shift your focus, and lead with curiosity. But where do you even begin? In this episode, Jaclyn talks to someone who felt the fear of change but took the leap anyway, and came out on top. After a decade at Clinique and NARS, Camila Pierotti took a life-changing step and quit her job to start her own beauty brand, Sol de Janeiro. The line celebrates everybody and all bodies, is cruelty-free and uses natural, sustainable Brazilian ingredients. And her leap paid off. Today, her award-winning hero product, Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is sold every 28 seconds.  It’s safe to say Camila has experience when it comes to taking chances and believing in yourself. Despite reports that black audiences consume media far more than other demographic groups do, no one has capitalized on those stats or amplified black millennial voices like Morgan Debaun. With $9 million in funding, Blavity is one of the largest media startups and lifestyle brands for black millennials, and she’s only just getting started. The self-professed “entrepreneur and hustler” is on a mission to incite change and create a platform where everyone belongs. Not to mention she’s defying the odds by building a hugely successful digital media company in a time when the media industry is seeing closures, layoffs, and overall decline in ad revenue. After experiencing tech burnout in corporate management, Sonja Rasula needed a change. Frustrated by the lack of gifts and hand-made goods available in retail, she came up with the idea for a curated pop-up event that brought together local artisans to sell their designs and products. Not only would it help solve consumer woes for sourcing original gifts, but it would also help small business owners reach new audiences and increase sales, and in turn, help the local economy grow and thrive—it was a win-win! So, in 2008, she risked her entire 401k savings to start Unique Markets, and it was an immediate success. In this episode, Sonja shares how she made the leap, why it was worth the risk, and how you can turn your idea into a successful business, too. Taking risks is scary but if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, it's necessary. Entrepreneurship is fundamentally linked to risk-taking, after all. Of course, there should be some level of research and data to inform the risk first, but oftentimes, there’s nothing like diving in head first and figuring it out along the way. In this episode of WorkParty, we’re talking all about the concept of “high risk, high reward” with someone who looked fear in the face and turned it into a cult-following. Since 2011, Kim Malek has become known as an industry leader, innovator, and disruptor for her game-changing business, Salt & Straw Ice Cream. We talk about her risk-taking nature, why it’s been integral to her success, and how you can incorporate risk into your business strategy, too. You might even learn what Kim's favorite flavor is.
