Richard Speck always believed he would shock the world and make headlines. He did just that when he systematically tortured, raped, and murdered eight student nurses from South Chicago Community Hospital on the night of July 13–14, 1966. He craved the attention he felt deprived of as a child, and he, unfortunately, found it in the kindness of nurses. His personal life in shambles, Speck couldn't find employment and struggled with substance abuse. Nearing the end of his rope and filled with rage, Speck unleashed on the people he craved most, nurses; raping and stabbing them over twenty times, washing his hands after each murder. Finally satisfied with his beastly binge, Speck thought he had created the perfect murder, but he made one crucial mistake - one woman survived, linking him to the bloody crime. He was a modern day Robin Hood, with a vicious bite. Pablo Escobar dreamed of being a millionaire as a small child and with ruthlessness and determination, he killed his way to the top, becoming the Columbian Cartel Kingpin of the 1970-80s. Escobar had a saying, “silver or lead,” meaning either you were with him and took the bribe or you were against him and you would die by bullets. He turned Columbia into the murder capital of the world, and was responsible for around 4,000-5,000 murders. His dark side unprecedented, Escobar also cared deeply for the impoverished conditions of his countrymen, taking care of the poor and less fortunate. Because of his compassion towards them, when Escobar was eventually convicted his people defended him to the very end.  Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? A mathematical prodigy and former professor at Cal Berkeley, Ted Kaczynski became widely known as the “Unabomber” after mailing bombs to universities and airlines between 1978 and 1995. After struggling at Berkeley, he decided to live a survivalist lifestyle in a cabin in Montana and adopted an anti-government and anti-technology philosophy. His bombing campaign resulted in the death of three people and injured 23 more. He would often send written manifestos on the problems of modern society and demand that they be printed in the paper. He was the king of terrorism. On the FBI’s Most Wanted list for more than a decade, Bin Laden was the founder of Al Qaeda and crusaded for global jihad. The prime target of his attacks was the United States of America. The most tragic was the attack on the World Trade Center, in New York, September 11th, 2001 - yet another date that will live in infamy. Bin Laden orchestrated his plan with 19 militants used to hijack four airplanes designed to carry out suicide missions on targets within the United States. Two of the planes crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center, while a third plane hit the Pentagon. The fourth plane, believed to be headed toward the White House, never reached its intended target due to the heroism of its fated passengers. Osama Bin Laden wanted war with the United States and that is exactly what he got. He was found and killed by Navy Seals on May 2, 2011. Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? A former Texas music teacher and choir leader, Marshall Applewhite was the founder of the Heaven’s Gate, a religious group which organized the largest American mass suicide since Jonestown. Applewhite lured and brainwashed willing followers with promises that extraterrestrials would grant them new bodies for spiritual enlightenment. In 1985, Applewhite and his followers rented a mansion in San Diego and planned a mass suicide they deemed as the “Final Exit”. They proceeded to end their lives by voluntarily suffocating themselves with plastic bags and overdosing on drugs. Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? Police officer turned killer, Laurie Bembenek, was convicted for the 1981 murder of her then husband’s ex-wife, Christine Schultz. Schultz’s home was broken into and she was gagged and blindfolded along with her sons. The cold-blooded killer then made the sons listen as she cruelly shot their mother dead. Bembenek claimed she was framed but the evidence was overwhelming. The murder weapon was her husband’s police revolver and fibers from a wig she owned were also found at the scene. Testimony claimed that Bembenek often spoke about killing Schultz, out of jealous rage. Eight years into her sentence, Bembenek again made headlines after she escaped from prison – an episode that inspired books, movies and the slogan, “Run Bambi, Run.” Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? From All-American to convicted murderer, Aaron Hernandez’ early career success as tight end for the New England Patriots was shockingly overshadowed by his violent life as a killer. Hernandez’ temper seemed to get the best of him in situations, and he was charged with the first-degree murder of friend Odin Lloyd and also indicted in connection with two drive-by murders in 2012. Without the possibility of parole on his life sentence, Hernandez ultimately saw no way out from it all and tragically took his own life in prison in 2017. Although a seemingly average husband and father of two, Dennis Rader lived a double life as a serial killer who terrorized the Wichita, Kansas area from the 1970s to the ‘90s. In letters to police and local news outlets that detailed his murders, Rader would sign them as the BTK Killer. The acronym stood for: “Bind, Torture, Kill”. During all ten of his murders, Rader lived a normal working life and was an active member of his church until he was arrested in 2005. He is currently serving 10 consecutive life sentences. The original “Killer Clown,” Gacy is widely thought to be the inspiration for the terrifying and nightmare inducing Stephen King character, Pennywise the Clown. Gacy’s death count totals 33 young men and teen boys, most of whom he buried in the crawl space under his home. An active member of his community, Gacy often dressed up as a clown to perform for charitable events and parties. He’d lure his victims to his house with the promise of giving them alcohol. After they were drunk, he would handcuff them then viciously torture and sodomize them before ultimately strangling them to death. In May of 1994, he was executed by lethal injection.  Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? Responsible for killing and dismembering 17 young men between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer is arguably one of the most gruesome serial killers the world has ever seen. Mostly targeting African-American men at gay bars, Dahmer would lure his victims to his home and drug them before strangling them to death. He would then engage in sexual acts with their corpses and often keep their genitals or skills as souvenirs. Dahmer’s rampage came to an end in 1992 after he was captured and given 15 life sentences.  Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? Go to www.reelz.com/podcasts/

The case is undoubtedly the most infamous murder-mystery in history. “Jack the Ripper” is the name given to the unidentified serial killer that murdered and mutilated five female prostitutes in London in 1888. While there have been over 100 theories presented on the Ripper’s true identity, renowned “Ripperologist” Martin Fido suggests that a violent, anti-social man named “David Cohen” is the true killer, partly because Cohen’s incarceration at an insane asylum happened to coincide with the end of the murders. Although various letters were sent to the press by the alleged killer, one with a human kidney, the case of the Ripper murders will possibly forever remain unsolved. Blinded by her obsession for a man who wasn’t interested in women with children, Susan Smith did the unthinkable; pushing her car into a lake, killing her two young sons. Smith’s case first garnered national attention when – for 9 days – she made public emotional pleas for the safe return of her children, claiming her vehicle had been carjacked by a black man who drove away with her sons still in the car. Smith eventually plead guilty to killing her sons and was sentenced to life in prison.
