We all have mental habits that are not so great—the things that keep us stuck, make us stressed out, impact our health and affect our relationships. Thankfully, we don’t have to stay “stuck” in these negative thinking patterns. We have all heard the phrase “look on the bright side” at least once in our lives. And yes, sometimes we do need those little reminders to be positive: “stop and smell the roses”, “things will get better” and the “remember, the glass is half full”. But what happens when these reminders become toxic? What happens when positivity shuts down, rather than opens up, the path to healing? In this podcast, I talk with licensed marriage and family therapist Whitney Hawkins Goodman about the dangers of toxic positivity, the relationship between toxic positivity and gaslighting, how to be truly empathetic, the power of learning how to listen and how to comfort someone who is grieving. Your mindsets have the power to take you places you never imagined you would go, or hold you back from those places, keeping you stuck in a hamster wheel of fear, anxiety and depression. But how do you learn how to choose the right mindsets to make you successful and help you find fulfillment? In this podcast, I spoke to media mogul, entrepreneur, filmmaker and leading motivational speaker Tom Bilyeu about the power of choosing the right mindset, how we can take back control over our lives and tell our own stories, how to build up mental resilience and overcome negative thinking, why learning is so powerful, why we all need to embrace our failures and how constructive criticism can help develop our passion and grow. For many of us, spirituality brings comfort and peace in times of trouble—our belief systems support us and hold us up when things get rough. But can the same be said for our society as a whole? Can faith and love win in a highly anxious, depressed and tribalistic culture? In this podcast, I speak with best-selling author, respected spiritual leader and global activist Bishop T.D. Jakes about mental health and spirituality, the power of rest, why boundaries help us be better people, racism and the church’s shortcomings, and what we can all do to bring about change and make our society a more enriching place for all people.    Read the show blog here:  https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/a-conversation-with-bishop-t-d-jakes-on-mental-health-spirituality-racism-how-he-deals-with-anxiety **Special offers from this week's sponsors**   -Hiya Health (the best children's multivitamin): Receive 50% off your first order. In this podcast, I speak with Paul Austin from The ThirdWave (a company that focuses on providing resources for safe, structured, and responsible psychedelic use) about the relationship between psychedelics and mental health, the different types of psychedelics and what they can be used for, how psychedelics can help overcome trauma and addiction, and how the responsible use of psychedelics can help us become more integrated mentally and physically and connected to the world around us. We also discuss how psychedelics can help with neuroplasticity, impact epigenetics, and how to safely micro-dose. This information is intended for educational purposes only. I understand that in many areas of the world the use of different kinds of psychedelics are prohibited or illegal; as a company we do not promote illegal activity. I do, however, believe that it is important to have this conversation, and think of ways we can help everyone improve their mental health and find satisfaction and purpose. This is why I strongly believe we need to reduce the stigma around talking about psychedelics and researching safe and responsible ways we can use them to help people manage their minds and live their best lives.  For more information on Paul and The Thirdwave (tons of helpful resources and articles!) visit: http://paulaustin.co and https://thethirdwave.co ***Special offer from this week's podcast sponsors***    -Liquid I.V Electrolytes (my favorite electrolytes!): Get 25% off with code DRLEAF at checkout https://liquid-iv.com    -ThirdLove Bras (the most comfortable bras!!): To get 15% off your ThirdLove Bra order see: https://thirdlove.com/drleaf  Podcast Highlights  1:57 What is Third Wave?  8:49 What are psychedelics?  20:00 Why what comes after the psychedelic experience is so important  23:40 How do psychedelics compare to other forms of therapy?  28:46 The 3 main elements of a healthy psychedelic experience  34:18 The power of microdosing  38:50 The different types of psychedelics and how they can help with mental health  50:00 Are psychedelics addictive? 1:00:20 Epigenetics and psychedelics 1:09:38 Is ketamine safe?  Read the show blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-psychedelics-can-help-improve-mental-brain-and-physical-health-how-to-safely-micro-dose-common-psychedelic-myths-debunked-with-paul-austin-founder-of-thirdwave Sign up to join my free text program and receive mental health care tips and strategies, exclusive offers and more! Yet the nature of human sensitivity is often misunderstood, especially when it comes to recognizing and dealing with highly sensitive people.  As I discuss in this podcast with psychologist and best-selling author Dr. Elaine Aron, a significant percentage of the population (regardless of gender, race or nationality) are highly sensitive individuals, although many of them don’t know they are highly sensitive, or what that means for the way they interact with others, express their emotions, deal with disapproval or parent their children. In this podcast Dr. Elaine shares some great tips and techniques for those who identify as highly sensitive, tips for highly sensitive parents, what NOT to say to someone who is highly sensitive, the benefits of being highly sensitive, and so much more! We all know those people that are always on the go: they never seem to rest, they are always busy doing something and they seem to accomplish so much. Perhaps you are one of those people! But did you know that this could also be a sign of high-functioning anxiety? In this podcast, I speak to therapist and licensed counselor Nancy Jane Smith about the signs and symptoms of high-functioning anxiety and how to overcome it, as well as how to deal with perfectionism, people-pleasing and avoid burnout. High functioning anxiety is a form of anxiety that you won’t get diagnosed with, but it is similar to generalized anxiety, and also involves gastro symptoms, headaches, panic attacks, racing thoughts and so on. It is essentially a way of coping that pushes you harder and faster, which often leads to perfectionism, people-pleasing and burnout. On the outside everything may look great, but, on the inside, everything is falling apart, which is why high functioning anxiety is so hard to recognize. In fact, a lot of people aren’t aware that you don’t have to live with this kind of “hustle, hustle, hustle” mentality this because they do not share how they feel with the people in their lives.   Special offer from this week's sponsor:  -Thrive Market: Try Thrive Market today and become a member risk-free! Racial prejudice doesn't just hurt the person who is victimized by it, it also impacts the person who inflicts the pain, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Toxic, biased mindsets are real things: they are built into the structures of brain, affecting how we see and interact with the world, which can affect our mental and physical health. Thankfully, we can rewire these mindsets and start changing the way we live, and the way we participate in society. But that's only if we are willing to put in the work to do so. Unwiring prejudice and racial bias from our brains and societies begins with deep, honest conversations, and I hope that this discussion with my two wonderful sons-in-law will impact you as much as it did me. In this episode we discuss what it is like to be a black man in America, why we are talking about black lives matter and what does it really mean, police brutality and what we can do to change the system, how racism affects our mental health, dealing with trauma, what is going on with the current protests, what is privilege, racism in the church, how to empathize with people whose experiences are different to ours, and some things we can start doing now to end systematic racial bias and its effects.  I hope you will watch or listen with an open mind and an open heart. We are not trying to deny anyone's experiences, judge anyone or silence anyone. We are just trying to focus on what we can do to change something that has gone on way too long, at too great a cost.   Read Jay's blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/can-i-switch-off-my-brain-being-black-in-america-is-tiring-even-during-a-pandemic?_ke=   Read Eli's blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-money-fuels-police-brutality-against-people-of-color-and-how-we-can-fight-back?_ke=   Read a personal letter from me here:  https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/a-personal-letter-from-me?_ke=  Additional stories and blogs worth reading: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news Where you can donate today:   -Equal Justice Initiative: https://eji.org/?_ke  -Minnesota Freedom Fund: https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/?_ke=  -George Floyd Memorial Fund: https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd?_ke=  -Campaign Zero: https://www.joincampaignzero.org/?_ke=  -Reclaim the Block: https://www.reclaimtheblock.org/home?_ke=  --NAACP: https://www.naacp.org  Additional mental health resources and counseling options:  - Free therapy for communities of color Text NOSTIGMA to 707070   -BetterHelp online therapy: https://trybetterhelp.com/drleaf -Inclusive Therapists: https://www.inclusivetherapists.com/?_ke=  -Alyssa Marie Wellness: https://www.alyssamariewellness.com/?_ke=  -Full Circle Therapy Services: https://www.fullcircletherapyservices.com  -Crisis text hotline: Text SHARE to 741741 for free, fast, and confidential crisis counseling -Melanin And Mental Health: -https://www.melaninandmentalhealth.com/?_ke Additional reading materials:   -https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/29/books/review/antiracist-reading-list-ibram-x-kendi.html  -https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2020/jun/03/do-the-work-an-anti-racist-reading-list-layla-f-saad Helpful podcasts to listen to: https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/g32732684/anti-racism-podcasts/ This episode was made possible by our sponsor Feals CBD (the best CBD out there!): To get 50% off your Feals CBD order and free shipping see https://feals.com/drleaf.  Have questions about CBD? Even though things are starting to open in many places, we all are facing a world which is dramatically different to the one we knew before the pandemic—so many things are uncertain, which only exacerbates our collective mental distress. Thankfully, as I discuss in this week’s blog and podcast with world-renowned psychiatrist, brain specialist and best-selling author Dr. Daniel Amen, there are ways we can take our mental and brain health into our own hands! We all know that our hormones are important, but did you know that they can impact our mood and mental health as well? In this podcast, I spoke to Dr. Anna Cabeca, an OB-GYN, bestselling author and hormone expert, about the neuroendocrine system, how our hormones affect our mood and mental wellbeing, how the keto diet boosts brain energy and can help us lose weight and what our urine says about our stress levels.    Dr. Anna’s desire to help others was inspired by her own life story. After the traumatic death of her young son, Anna’s health started declining as she went through PTSD-induced early menopause. Even though she was a highly-qualified doctor who trained at one of the best schools in the country, she was at a loss: nothing was working, so she went around the world looking for answers.    During her healing journey, Dr. Anna began to realize the importance of lifestyle choices and habits, and the impact they have on our hormonal health and mental and physical wellbeing. She recognized the importance of a holistic mind and body approach to health, and now teaches others how they too can heal and live their best lives!   This podcast was made possible by our sponsor Kettle & Fire- my all time favorite bone broth company! To get 15% off your Kettle & Fire bone broth order see: Kettleandfire.com/drleaf or use code DRLEAF at checkout.        Podcast Time Stamps 4:20 Why Dr. Anna has always loved medicine, and how her own struggles inspired her to help others 8:20 The Hormone Fix, and how to deal with negative effects of perimenopause and menopause 13:31 Hormones and mental health: how are they connected and what you can do about it 20:09 Cortisol: the good, the bad and the ugly 22:01 Insulin resistance, hormonal imbalance and weight gain 32:22 What your urine pH says about your stress levels    36:07 What are bioidentical hormones and why are they important? 42:20 Is the keto diet good for our hormones?   Read the full show blog and transcript here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/is-a-hormonal-imbalance-making-you-moody-anxious-and-overweight-the-hormonal-problem-and-solution-with-dr-anna-cabeca-ob-gyn-and-hormone-expert     For more info on Dr. Anna and to get her books visit: https://drannacabeca.com     Additional Resources:   -Join my text group for more tips, notifications of sales, and more! Learning can be challenging, but did you know it can also be fun and empowering, taking you places you have never been before and helping you achieve your goals and dreams? In this podcast, I spoke with master brain coach, top podcast host and NY Times bestselling author Jim Kwik about how learning how to learn is one of the best things we can do for our mental and brain health, why our ability to use knowledge is our superpower, and how the brain is truly limitless, allowing us to be as intelligent as we want to be!   As a child, Jim suffered from several traumatic brain injuries, when affected his ability to perform in school. Eventually, his desperation led to his inspiration: Jim set out to understand how the brain and memory work, and how to learn how to learn. As he notes, this is something that is not often taught in schools, where we are given lots of knowledge to learn, but are not taught how to make the most of this knowledge. Indeed, many of us incorrectly assume that intelligence is something that we are either born with or not, that it is a “fixed” thing, and that is why some people do well and others fail.    Yet, as Jim has shown in his own life, which he describes in his incredible book Limitless: Upgrade Your Brain, Learn Anything Faster, and Unlock Your Exceptional Life, he went from being the “boy with the broken brain” to a world-renowned memory champion and brain coach who has developed a reliable and scientifically sound set of tools to enhance memory formation and learning. He now teaches his techniques to others with astonishing results, and is an in-demand speaker, a brain coach for celebrities and CEOs, the head of a large online learning program, and the host of a podcast with tens of millions of listeners!   Special offers from our show sponsors:   -Thrive Market (the best site for healthy, organic and affordable groceries and beauty products!): Join today and you’ll get up to twenty dollars in shopping credit toward your first order at thrivemarket.com/drleaf.      -BLUblox (the best glasses to reduce your exposure to harmful blue and green light!): To get 15% off your BLUblox glasses use the code LEAF15 at checkout: BLUblox/drleaf     Podcast Time Stamps 2:48 How Jim’s inspiration was his desperation, and what he did to overcome his traumatic brain injuries  12:00 Why intelligence is not fixed 16:00 The 7 main lies we believe about the brain, and how to overcome them  24:32 The question is not how smart you are, but how are you smart? 28:10 Why our mistakes are not our failures 36:00 Genius is built, not born, and why intelligence takes hard work, determination and practice 39:00 The power of mindsets, motivation and methods, and how they can make you limitless 59:04 The fun ancient Greek memorization technique that can help you remember anything!   Read the show blog and transcript here:https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-to-learn-faster-memorize-anything-and-upgrade-your-brain-to-become-limitless-with-top-brain-coach-jim-kwik     For more info on Jim and to get his book visit: LimitlessBook.com   And follow Jim on social media: @JimKwik and FB is @JimKwikOfficial      Additional Resources:   -Join my text group for more tips, notifications of sales, and more! We all know fiber is good for us, but did you also know that it can help with your mental health? In this week’s blog and podcast, I speak with GI specialist and epidemiologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz about how a high-fiber diet can help boost mental and brain health, heal food sensitivities and reduce inflammation in the brain and body!   In his amazing new book, Fiber Fueled: The Plant-Based Gut Health Program for Losing Weight, Restoring Your Health, and Optimizing Your Microbiome, Dr. B notes how even though he was very successful as a medical doctor, his processed food diet was making him miserable, tired and anxious. When he met his wife, he began to understand how real, healthy whole foods could transform his life, which led him on the path he is on today: meeting people where they are in their journey and helping them live their best and healthiest lives. As Dr. B points out, although the current healthcare system is really good at treating acute illnesses, it falls short when it comes to preventative medicine and chronic health issues.   Indeed, as a medical doctor with multiple qualifications, he was taught little about the impact lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise could impact our mental and physical health! Thankfully, times are changing, especially as more and more research is being published on the importance of our lifestyle choices. We now know that pills and procedures are not everything; around 20% of diseases are genetic, which means 80% are related to our diet and lifestyle. This is great news! It means that our health is largely in our hands, which very empowering.     Podcast Time Stamps: 6:25 What transformed Dr. B’s life, and why he loves helping people regain their health and live their best life 18:02 What is the difference between disease prevention and disease management? 24:29 The gut-brain connection, and why your gut should be your brain’s best friend 30:22 The gut is an endocrine organ, as much as the ovaries and testes are 30:50 The gut produces post-biotics, which happens when you combine prebiotics and probiotics 37:00 What is the one golden rule when it comes to eating? 43:50 Is meat okay to eat? 48:22 Food sensitivities and what you can do about them 55:00 How fiber-rich diets can prevent heart disease 57:20 Why diet is not everything 1:00:00 Current health trends to be excited about and health trends to avoid 1:02:02 What if you live in a food desert?     For more info on Dr. Will and to get his new book visit: https://theplantfedgut.com     And follow him on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theguthealthmd/   Read the full episode blog and transcript here:https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-fiber-can-improve-your-mental-and-brain-health-tips-on-boosting-gut-health-and-overcoming-food-sensitivities-with-gi-specialist-dr-will-bulsiewicz         This episode was made possible by the following sponsors:   -Blinkist (my favorite reading app): To get your free week on Blinkist AND 25% off your subscription see: https://www.blinkist.com/nc/partners/cleaning-up-the-mental-mess     -NOOM (the best healthy habit company): For your NOOM special offer see: https://noom.com/drleaf     Additional Resources:   -Join my text group for more tips, notifications of sales, and more! Science is science, right? Unfortunately, this is not always the case, especially when it comes to women’s health. Our understanding of the human brain and body has been clouded by years of gender bias—for decades many scientists and doctors have assumed that men and women are really the same, except for the bits and bobs that can be covered by a bikini. Yet, as this podcast guest and renowned researcher Dr. Lisa Mosconi points out, this kind of “bikini science” has dramatic implications for women’s mental and physical health that go beyond our reproductive organs, affecting every part of the brain and body.    Dr. Lisa Mosconi, PhD, is the Director of the Women’s Brain Initiative and Associate Director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC)/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where she serves as an Associate Professor of Neuroscience in Neurology and Radiology. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the Department of Psychiatry at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine, and at the Department of Nutrition at NYU Steinhardt School of Nutrition and Public Health. Dr. Mosconi holds a PhD degree in Neuroscience and Nuclear Medicine, and is a certified Integrative Nutritionist and holistic healthcare practitioner. Her expertise lies in examining the way gender impacts the health of the brain and body, and in overcoming the massive gender gap in the world of medicine. As she describes in her amazing book, The XX Brain, since the time of Darwin there was a long-held assumption that women’s brains are inferior because they are smaller, but women are generally smaller than men, which was not taken into account for decades, and still persists subconsciously in many areas of medicine and neuroscience.   Podcast Time Stamps 3:10 Why Lisa wanted to be a scientist and study the human mind and brain 9:22 Why Alzheimer’s is not just a result of genetic mutations and old age 12:12 The difference between early onset and late onset dementia 14:56 Why you should be careful of taking genetic tests like 23 & me 21:26 Why most research is done on men and the disaster at the heart of medicine 32:54 The communication between the female brain and the female reproductive system, and why our hormones are crucial for brain health 40:11 The brain in middle-aged women, and how menopause can contribute to cognitive decline 47:25 How you as a woman can take back your health and prevent memory loss! 59:00 How chronic stress impacts our hormones and brain health 1:07:25 The power of the X gene, and why women have more genes than men   For more info on Dr. Lisa Mosconi and to get her book visit: https://www.lisamosconi.com   This podcast was made possible by our sponsor ThirdLove:  Comfortable bras are so hard to find, which is why I am a big fan of ThirdLove! For many of us, trauma is something with a capital “T”, a big event or situation, such as a car accident or pandemic, that impacts us in dramatic and unforeseen ways. Yet, as I discuss in this week’s blog and podcast with licensed clinical social worker and therapist Alyssa Mancao, trauma with a lowercase “t” is something many people have to deal with on a daily basis. This kind of trauma, institutional or otherwise, is often normalised and suppressed, which can have a lasting impact on someone’s mental and physical health, compelling them to fight for survival in the face of persistent stressors in their environment.  Thankfully, as Alyssa has seen in her social work and her private practice, many people, given the right help, can and do recover from trauma and learn how to reconnect to themselves and their communities in deep and meaningful ways. How? Alyssa focuses on bringing back the human element in therapy, going beyond evidence-based practices and focusing on the individual’s unique story and experiences. She recognizes that many of the people she works with are dealing with little traumas like bullying and failed relationships on a daily basis, and that their mental and physical symptoms are a function of survival.    Podcast Time Stamps 4:15 How Alyssa’s clients gave her hope, and the power of human resilience  5:46 What Alyssa thinks about evidence-based therapy and why she started her own therapy practice 9:33 The difference between little traumas and big Trauma 14:41 What is EMDR therapy and can it help you? 25:33 What is the “inner child” and how do you heal childhood wounds? 33:29 Should we forgive those who have hurt us? 36:15 Why being told you are a sinner is bad for your mental health 37:48 The difference between shame and guilt, and how to overcome them 41:55 When is it time to end a friendship? 49:00 You have everything you need in you to heal yourself!   Read the podcast blog and transcript here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-to-heal-from-trauma-signs-of-secondary-trauma-and-how-emdr-can-help-with-trauma-recovery-and-ptsd-with-therapist-and-trauma-expert-alyssa-mancao   For more info on Alyssa and to contact here visit her website: www.alyssamariewellness.com   And follow her on social media:  https://www.instagram.com/alyssamariewellness/     https://www.facebook.com/alyssamariewellness       Link to find an EMDR therapist: http://www.emdr.com/SEARCH/index.php         This episode was made possible by the following sponsors:       -Feals CBD (the best CBD out there!): To get 50% off your Feals CBD order and free shipping see https://feals.com/drleaf. Harvard professor David Sinclair believes that not only can we slow aging down, we can actually reverse it. In this episode, David Sinclair explains the three levels of aging, and what can be done on each level. He describes the lifestyle changes that slow aging down, the drug treatments that begin to stop aging, and experimental new procedures that may actually reverse aging once they are fully developed. David, who has spent decades researching longevity and ageing notes how 80% of how we age is up to us. Although many of us view ageing means a decline in function over time leading to disease and death, we don’t just have to accept that as we get old we will get sick!    Podcast Time Stamps 1:50 Why David does what he does  3:54 Is aging a disease? Yes, we are in the midst of a global crisis. For many people, life is incredibly challenging right now. It is easy to lose hope, and fear what will happen in the future. But did you know that you can also use this time to grow as a person, learn how to make the most of living in the moment and discover the opportunities that present themselves?  It is often the case in life that something good is birthed out of something bad. Crises can be watershed moments, compelling us to get out of our comfort zone, teaching us to embrace our fears and helping us make the most of living in the moment, as I discuss in this podcast with leadership expert and best-selling author John Maxwell. We all know we should try our best and strive for excellence in everything we do, but what happens when this desire to do well turns toxic? In this podcast, I speak to clinical psychologist Dr. Margaret Rutherford about how perfectionism can be another manifestation of depression, what to do when our desire to succeed becomes destructive, why we need to learn, rather than fear, our failures and useful techniques to overcome perfectionist tendencies. In her new book, Perfectly-Hidden Depression, Margaret notes how many perfectionists often don’t acknowledge or know that they are depressed, or that their desire to succeed in every area of their lives is a coping strategy to deal with past hurts and trauma. Many do not have what are considered “normal” traits of depression, that is feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Indeed, in a number of cases they do not know how to express uncomfortable or painful feelings and emotions, and tend to talk about what they have gone through in a very detached way. This type of perfectionism is different from striving for excellence, which is more process-orientated and encourages you to learn from your mistakes. Perfectly-hidden depression, on the other hand, is fueled by fear and shame. Toxic perfectionism tends to be goal-orientated, and sees failure as a sign of worthlessness, which puts intense pressure on someone’s performance, compelling them to constantly do better and hide their mistakes. Read the full episode blog and transcript here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-perfectionism-can-lead-to-depression-and-anxiety-tips-on-how-to-stop-the-toxic-perfectionism-cycle-interview-with-psychologist-dr-margaret-rutherford    Podcast Highlights: 1:58 What is perfectly hidden depression? 7:25 The role of the therapist is not to fix people 10:49 What is perfectionism? 17:34, 27:20 Ten main traits of perfectly-hidden depression 19:36: How is this different from other forms of depression 38:00 The first step to healing is acknowledging that there is a problem  42:01 Tips and techniques to deal with perfectionism 40:05 Helping child or teen battling with perfectly-hidden depression   52:10 Social media and perfectionism    For more info on Dr. Margaret and to get her book visit: https://drmargaretrutherford.com   Listen to her amazing podcast here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/selfwork-dr-margaret-rutherford-self-help-mental-health/id1166015598     Special offers from this week's sponsors:   -NOOM (the best healthy habit company): For your NOOM special offer see: noom.com/DRLEAF   -SEED (my favorite probiotic company): Visit https://seed.com and use code MENTALMESS for 15% off your first month of the Daily Synbiotic     Additional Resources:   -Get my new brain detox app SWITCH on sale now! Therapy is something that many people are either ashamed about or joke about. Yet the need to speak to someone about what is going on in your life is neither shameful or funny. The world is currently riveted in fear of what is known as COVID-19, a new type of coronavirus that has put a lot of people at risk of getting ill or potentially dying. I understand that this situation can be frightening, and we should take all necessary precautions, following the WHO and CDC guidelines. We need to bring balance to the fear, because the fear can be more dangerous than the virus. In fact, fear-based stress and anxiety can and will weaken your immune system, the very thing that needs to be strong during a health crisis!  In this special podcast episode I cover tips, techniques, and simple strategies to help protect and boost your mental and physical health during this pandemic.  WHO website: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/events-as-they-happen CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/cleaning-disinfection.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fcommunity%2Fhome%2Fcleaning-disinfection.html   Additional resources: Get my new 21 day brain detox program here: https://theswitch.app   Register now for my 2020 Mental Health Summit Dec 3-5 in Dallas, TX! Life can be tough. You will fail at certain things. You will be stressed. Bad things will happen to you. People will disappoint you. But did you know that, despite all these things, life can be awesome? Yes, it is true! In this week’s blog and podcast, I talk with bestselling author and speaker Neil Pasricha about how we can all learn to be more stress-resilient and failure-proof, how life is still awesome even when things don’t go our way, and how we can teach our children to thrive in a world where change is inevitable.   Neil is no stranger to bad news. A number of years ago his first wife left him and his best friend committed suicide. To cope with his grief, he decided to start a blog called 1000 Awesome Things to cheer himself up, which focused on life’s simple pleasures. This blog soon became viral, was voted one of the best blogs in the world and led to Neil’s his first bestseller, The Book of Awesome, which focuses on how, despite the ups and downs of life, there is so much to be thankful for and amazed by every day.   Podcast Time Highlights: -2:00 How Neil turned lemons into lemonade -4:10 Why we don’t know how to fail -10:45 How to tell yourself a different story -16:51 Why the only way to get better is to get bad -29:46 Why you should let your children fail -39:11 Why you can’t have everything you want -46:18 Why happiness, not success, comes first -51:00 Why reading is good for your mental health -56:55 Why multitasking is a myth   For more info on Neil and to get his books visit: https://www.neil.blog And follow him on social media: -Instagram: @neilpasricha -Twitter: @NeilPasricha -Facebook: @NeilPasricha   For additional resources to help you on your mental health healing journey: Get my new 21 day brain detox program here: https://theswitch.app Register now for my 2020 Mental Health Summit Dec 3-5 in Dallas, TX! In this podcast I interview the incredible creator and founder of Whole30 and bestselling author, Melissa Urban, on her health journey, dealing with trauma, how to recover from addiction, how to help someone who is battling with depression and much more!   Melissa didn’t just wake up on day and decide to found the Whole30 movement. Her journey to health was a long one: even though she grew up in a good home, she was sexually abused by a family member as a teenager. To suppress the trauma, she turned to drugs, and what started off as a distraction soon became an addiction. She tried to hold in her pain, and started self-destructing internally—trauma and pain cannot be suppressed, and will manifest in other areas of our lives if we do not embrace, acknowledge and deal with the hard stuff in life.    Podcast Time Highlights:   2:34 What inspired the Whole30 movement?   4:08, 43:00 How community lays the foundation for true success   6:00, 8:08 How Melissa overcame her drug addiction   19:08 How we are not defined by any one part of our story   20:42 How to heal from divorce   27:11 Why is mental health so important?    31:06 How to help someone who is depressed and suicidal   39:40 Is there such a thing as work-life balance?   41:31 Melissa’s spiritual journey   43:00 What is it like to run Whole30?   47:55 Melissa’s favorite foods and recipes   50:21 How to deal with negative criticism and feedback    53:42 Are there any wellness trends we should avoid?   Whole30 program: whole30.com   instagram, twitter, and facebook: @whole30   Whole30 books: whole30.com/books   Melissa's personal instagram: @melissau     Melissa's AMAZING podcast: whole30.com/podcast     For additional resources to help you on your mental health healing journey:   Get my new 21 day brain detox program here: https://theswitch.app   Register now for my 2020 Mental Health Summit Dec 3-5 in Dallas, TX! Sex is a major part of life, whether we want to talk about it or not. It is also an important part of our mental health—good thinking means good sex, and vice versa. In fact, great sex is great for our brain health; it boosts our longevity, happiness, intelligence, or ability to form deep and meaningful connection, and our mental resilience, while, orgasms, whether they occur in a relationship or not, have many health benefits, include stress relief and better skin!   In this podcast I discuss why sex is such an important part of our mental and physical health, how to spice up your sex life and improve your relationship, how to recover from sexual trauma and how to become comfortable with your own sexuality with sex therapist Emily Morse, author, Doctor of Human Sexuality and host of the SiriusXM Radio show and podcast of the same name, Sex With Emily. As she says, life is too short for bad sex, as it is such an important part of our daily life and our overall mental and physical wellbeing. This is why it is so important that people of all ages learn how to love themselves and get comfortable with their own sexual needs and desires, to not only improve their own sexual wellbeing but also their relationships. We have all experienced shame before: the feeling that we are not enough, or that we do not live up to certain standards or ideals. But what happens when this shame spirals out of control? What happens when it overtakes our life, and affects the way we think and behave? In this week’s podcast I speak with Megan Bruneau, a psychologist and registered counselor who specializes in crisis support, compassion-based therapy and executive coaching, about the problem of shame, learning how to love yourself despite your imperfections, how to help someone with an eating disorder, the danger of medicalizing normal human emotions and why positive affirmations often fail.  Megan has been featured on national television programs like Good Morning America and The T.D. Jakes Show) and is a regular contributor to Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen and Forbes. Addiction is something many of us have experienced, whether we ourselves have battled with addiction, guilt and shame, or we know a loved one, friend or family member who is dealing with addiction. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million American adults (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2017 alone! When it comes to addiction, whether we are talking about addiction to drugs, alcohol, food, sex and so on, people are often faced with conflicting messages: they are damaged goods with little or no hope of overcoming their addiction, or it is all their fault and they are just “bad apples”. Yet reality is far more complicated, and, thankfully, far more hopeful: it is possible to take responsibility for our lives while recognizing and dealing with the negative consequences addiction. In this week’s podcast I speak about addiction and how it is possible to overcome it with Adi Jaffe, Ph.D. who is a nationally recognized expert on mental health, addiction, relationships and shame. We discuss his unconventional but effective method, how he struggled with addiction (which ended up with him in prison!), how to help someone who is struggling with addiction, and why abstinence is ineffective in addiction recovery. Is there anything we do about artificial blue light exposure in today’s 24-hour, technology-centred world? In this podcast I interview Judge Shelyna Brown and Lori Volkman, JD on the current state of the mental health legal system, how it's failing to help those touched by this system, and what we can do about it. This podcast is vital to anyone who works in the legal profession, has a family member or friend in the system, or for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of what is going on and how to help make a difference in this world! Judge Shelyna Brown and Lori Volkman also share some helpful tips on how they manage their mental health and how to start getting your community involved in mental health initiatives. Judge Shelyna Brown and Lori Volkman will both be guest speakers at my 2019 mental health summit in Dallas, TX. Bios: The Honorable Shelyna V. Brown is a sought-after presenter, panelist, and trainer with over two decades of experience in the legal and leadership arenas. From a young age, growing up in a marginalized community, she saw first-hand the challenges and obstacles that those with similar backgrounds encountered in society. She came to the realization that in order to change the outcome, one had to have a place and a voice at the table. Upon graduating from law school, Judge Brown served as a public defender fighting for all those who did not traditionally have a voice—the low income, the immigrant, those suffering from mental health challenges, anyone who did not have access to their constitutional right of appropriate representation. She argued several high-profile cases that were noted in the media and written about in local and regional publications. In 2011, California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Shelyna V. Brown to the bench in Santa Clara County. Judge Brown has served on several boards and has been recognized for her excellence in advocacy and praised for her contributions to the community. She was awarded numerous honors and accolades, including Excellence in Advocacy from the 100 Black Women of Silicon Valley, the Ivy Rose Foundation named her the first recipient of the Distinguished Women of Silicon Valley Awards, and the Silicon Valley Business Journal listed her as one of the 100 Women of Influence. Judge Brown was honored by the Silicon Valley NAACP with the Wester Sweet Award for Legal Activism, she is the most recent recipient of the Santa Clara Law School Social Justice and Human Rights Award, and she received a Congressional Commendation from Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren. From nonprofits to universities to global corporations including Stanford University, the Parent Project, and Gilead Sciences. Judge Brown uses her uncommon perspective as a superior court judge, certified mediator, entrepreneur, and master coach to inspire and equip individuals to meet and rise above all of life’s challenges. Judge Brown received her bachelor of arts from University of California, Davis and her juris doctorate from Santa Clara University, School of Law where she is a well-known figure and frequent speaker and guest lecturer. Judge Brown is dedicated community servant, advocate, and mentor. She welcomes and promotes opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to visit her courtroom, to observe, ask questions, to learn about the legal profession, and to envision being a voice at the table.
