What if God has purposed your marriage for something so much more than happily ever after? Since the very beginning, God's design for marriage is for husbands and wives to be ambassadors of holy love to a hurting world. Still, so many couples stop short at happy and wonder why they feel unsatisfied. Rather than "you and me against the world," God calls each couple to the rich and meaningful mission of "you and me for the world." Aaron and Jennifer Smith, popular marriage bloggers at HusbandRevolution.com and UnveiledWife.com, transparently share their journey from a marriage in crisis to a marriage built on Christ's redemptive love. Through fresh biblical insight and intimate stories of their own struggles and victories, this book will guide you toward a God-centered, ministry-minded, and thriving marriage. You will discover the signature marks of a marriage after God, find principles for building an unshakable marriage foundation, learn how to let God's story take the lead in your love story, and recognize the tools God has already equipped you with for a missional life together. Filled with helpful illustrations, this thorough and practical book will empower you and your spouse to dream, decide, and do as you step hand-in-hand into God's ultimate purpose for your marriage. Your oneness is also meant for witness. God has purposed your remarkable, romantic, and redemptive relationship to be a powerful light to a dark and hurting world. This is your invitation to marriage as God intended - a life-saving, hope-inspiring, and transforming force of God's love. It's easy to grow hardened toward each other in marriage. It's also far too easy to be distracted or shallow when it comes to growing in the ways that matter most. Jesus calls our hearts soil, so how can we mindfully cultivate the soil of our hearts in a way that allows the Gospel to bear maximum fruit in our lives? The desire to control outcomes and realities is at the root of all marital discord. Why? Because at its root the desire to control that which is out of our control is rooted in a distrust of God. If our spouse is disengaged, we want to nag so he or she will re-engage. When our finances aren't where we want them to be, we work and spend too much in hopes of regaining control. The list goes on. When we feel like our present reality is at odds with our ideal situation, we are faced with a choice: either we try to change the situation ourselves, we lose hope, or we trust God's goodness and sovereignty. Which one do you think is wisest? Thanks for listening! Please remember to subscribe, rate, and review. It seems natural to compare ourselves to others. As humans, we compare appearances, careers, marriages, and even spouses. Society encourages it. The chief problem of comparisons is that they’re usually based on romanticized half-truths. Most often when we compare, we base expectations of ourselves on standards that aren’t accurate – they’re perceived. Comparisons stifle progress; only truth in light of the gospel causes real growth. Sometimes the reasons marriage is challenging is because of a lie we're believing on some level. For example, we sometimes believe it's our primary job to change one another. In other cases, we wonder if we married the wrong person, or we expect our spouse to "complete" us. In this episode, we discussed common lies we believe in marriage and talked about how to dispel them. Enjoy! Thanks for listening! Please remember to subscribe, rate, and review. If we're not careful, subtle cultural lies can begin to have huge consequences on big truths in marriage. In a culture ruled by relative truths, it's more important now than ever to stand on God's Word as true, inerrant, and authoritative in our lives. How do we sort out truth? How do we gain unity around complex questions? We’re going to talk through this and provide some clear tangible pathways to understanding and clinging to God's truth. Thanks for listening! Finances are a hot topic in every marriage. It can be insanely stressful (https://fiercemarriage.com/managing-financial-stress-in-your-marriage), and if we’re not careful we can get caught up in the comparison game (https://fiercemarriage.com/crushing-comparison). We certainly don’t know everything about this or have a silver bullet to fix every financial woe in your marriage. However, we have learned a few principles that help us stay focused on the main thing: God. Having the right perspective on finances will serve at least three important purposes in your married life: * Keep God at the center and in control of your life, not money * Keep money in its rightful place – a few notches down the priority list * Replace stress with trust and striving with faithfulness, thus adding to your overall marital joy Keep listening for 7 principles we’ve learned about finances. This is one of those issues that will make or break your marriage. Men, we are constantly barraged with culture’s standard of womanly beauty. We are subconsciously told over and over again that a beautiful woman must be skinny, tall, wear certain clothes, act a certain way, and have a risqué appetite for sex. Advertisers and content producers spend billions establishing and reinforcing what culture deems beautiful. The funny thing is that if asked to describe what a beautiful woman looks like, content producers would quickly mention inner beauty, individual uniqueness, and personality. You’ll never catch them verbalizing that beauty has to look the way they show. In today's podcast, we look at this phenomenon and share practical ways to set your own spouse as your ultimate standard of attractiveness. Thanks for listening! If you’re like us (and like most), goals you make usually revolve around work and lifestyle: “hit this revenue milestone” or “pay off such-and-such debt”. Those goals are good, so long as they’re in the proper context of your identity in Christ and your Gospel-centered purpose as a new creation in him. This year, we're urging ourselves (and you!) to look closer to home when targeting big, crazy endeavors. Consider this: how can your marriage and family be different and/or more healthy this year? What experiences can you pursue together that will build your faith and trust in God while making use of your days to glorify him? Really… think about it. What could be? To that end, we've compiled this list of 5 tips/tools that we think are very helpful for building on specific, important aspects of your marriage. We hope they help you! We are all searching for real hope, authentic-biblical love, lasting joy and otherworldly peace for our marriage. It’s often when the night seems the darkest that the light shines brighter! How can we break the ice and let our guard down when everything inside of us wants to hold onto frustration? Selena and I have experienced PLENTY of “communication cold snaps” in our marriage. A “cold snap” is defined as a “a sudden, brief spell of cold weather.” Things get icy in marriage when bitterness builds up from being hurt, mistreated, or misunderstood over a long period of time. “Cold snaps” happen when we don’t nip communication issues in the bud. How can we build Christ-centered rhythms into our daily and weekly lives? In this episode, Ryan and Selena explore the topic of Spiritual Intimacy by looking at spiritual disciplines for cultivating a relentless devotion to Christ together. It’s inevitable in marriage for us to become familiar with our spouse. We know each other’s likes, dislikes, love languages—we also know how and when to press each other’s buttons. Familiarity is a double-edged sword that NEEDS to be used and viewed through the lens of the gospel. By knowing each other more fully, the Holy Spirit empowers us to love more completely. In this episode, Ryan and Selena discuss their own struggles with familiarity and how God continues to gently and lovingly lead them back to biblical truths in how they can love each other more completely. In this episode, Ryan and Selena discuss Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages. In their discussion they explore whether or not they are biblical, and how they can help/hinder your marriage in the different seasons you’re in (pre-kids, littles, etc.). After recently taking the quiz online (go to http://5LoveLanguages.com to take the quiz yourself), both were surprised by their results this time around versus when they were younger and without kids. Sex is an incredible gift, but missed expectations can cause hurt and frustration. What if you could clearly know what to expect, when sex would happen, and why it's worth prioritizing, even when you're tired? In this week's episode, Ryan and Selena introduce the idea of establishing a "Spectrum of Sex" in your marriage, as a means of gaining unity around the 'rhythms' (pun kind of intended) of your sex life. In this episode, Ryan and Selena discuss how our earthly marriage is simply a shadow to our eternal marriage with Christ, and the implications of living too focused on the happiness level of our marriage rather than the One we were created for can have ... As marriage ministers, it’s important for us to continually point people to Christ and commission marriages for the gospel (the mission of FM)—part of this means asking and discussing the hard question of: Are we surrendering ourselves/our marriage to God’s Kingdom? Or have we reduced Christianity to a mere means to our end: a happy life, and therefore, a happy marriage? Secondly, are we serving God’s kingdom together and “Strengthening the brethren?” (Isaiah 12:4) In other words, are to proclaim to others God’s mighty works and his character. Listen along for more! One of the most prevalent topics we get questions about is sex and intimacy. And for good reason: sexual intimacy is an important part of marriage, but it also tends to be one of the most misunderstood. For starters, here are some biblical truths about sex: * Sex is a good, gracious gift from God. He designed it. * Sex is created exclusively for the marriage covenant. Elsewhere is sin and will lead to brokenness. * Sex is created with huge purposes in mind. * Sex is meant to be enjoyed! With those principles in place (there are more, but for today we'll stop there), we can begin to understand what a healthy sex life might look like. For a much more in-depth look at the purposes of sex, consider reading our latest book Fierce Marriage (https://amzn.to/2s80U4M). Thanks for listening! Please remember to subscribe, rate, and review. Unity. Deep, true unity is unmistakable and irreplaceable in a healthy marriage. God's word says "they shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). Not two people with a common goal, but one flesh. Combined. Unified. God created us for deeper unity with our spouses than any other human. There are profound reasons for this, like the necessity of strong families for flourishing churches and societies. There are also pragmatic reasons for this, like how it sanctifies us as individuals to seek unity as a couple, and how pursuing unity causes you to have otherwise impossible conversations with each other. Getting away with your spouse is a vital part of keeping things renewed and fresh. This means taking time to intentionally disconnect from your everyday world and reconnect with your life partner. We strongly believe that getting away should be a regular (at least monthly) occurrence in marriages; here's why... Keeping score is never healthy for a marriage, yet it's often our default. Why? Because keeping score of wrongs, acts of service, faults, and personal victories can't possibly come from a spirit of love. It most often comes from a place of insecurity and lack of faith in the gospel. In this episode, we'll unpack how keeping score is damaging to a marriage, and share some of our personal stories of how it's hindered our closeness and growth. Thanks for listening! This episode continues our talk about how your marriage is your ministry, particularly through discipleship. When we live for God we are ministers of His gospel, period. You don’t have to be a vocational pastor or licensed priest, we are all lay-ministers of Christ (“lay” comes from “laity” which means common people). Ministry is a byproduct of knowing God intimately and allowing Him to pour out through us. We long for the day when Christian married couples en masse minister through their marriages. We aren’t called to simply love each other fully and end our mission there. Let’s explore our callings and live to see Christ change our world through the work He does in our marriages! There’s profound joy in the mutual and reckless pursuit of each other in marriage. Marriage requires a fierce tenacity that never gives up and never gives in. What does this reckless pursuit actually look like in marriage? What enables it within every complex issue and circumstance you will face? To start, look at Christ’s example. He pursues you without fail. It’s his steady pursuit that drew you to him, and it’s because of his love and grace alone that you’re in a relationship with him. David writes, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!” (Psalm 139:7-8). The psalmist is reflecting on God’s limitless pursuit of those he loves. The concept of a pursuing love has immense implications for your marriage. Pursuit is active, not passive. It means to chase steadily with the goal of capture. This is why it’s vital to keep dating each other long after you marry. When you work with the expressed intent of capturing your spouse’s heart, you’re in active pursuit. And more importantly, when you’re having a hard time connecting, the pursuit continues. May you throw out any and all backup plans in your marriage. When you do, you’ll enjoy the intimacy that comes only from pursuing unconditionally and being pursued exactly the same way. Is it possible to have lustful motivations in marriage? What makes an attitude or action loving or lustful? Hebrews 13:4 says, "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous." Could this apply to married people engaging in sex within their own marriage? In today's podcast, we'll explore just that in hopes of providing insight, clarity, and perspective on loving vs. lustful motivations in bed. Couple's Challenge After listening to this episode, ask yourself: are there areas in your sex life where lust has taken over? Fighting naked—both literally and figuratively—has been pivotal in helping us fight well. Yes, you can “fight well” in your marriage. Conflict, disagreements, frustrations, tension—none of this is new to marriage. That's what today's episode is all about. Put two people in a covenant together, living in the same house for life, and conflict is inevitable. First, we'll explore and understand what the bible says about how to resolve conflict, then we’ll leave you with a few tangible ways to deal with conflict in a healthy way. One of the truest markers of genuine love is its staying power—its longevity, its ability to persevere, and its ability to withstand. This is the type of love Christ shows us, and its the type of love we're called to express in marriage. However, our culture and our humanity would have us believe something else. Without a biblical understanding of love, we're prone to follow the whims of emotion and experience. We risk confusing infatuation for love. We believe the lie that love can only be found or stumbled upon rather than built, nurtured, and acted out. We risk believing that love is fickle and fragile—that it's something that can break or fade over time. That couldn't be further from the truth. Love is strong, not weak. It's decisive, not elusive. And love is BIG... so much bigger than our emotions can express or our moods can decide. How is love so big and so strong? In short, love is not a human idea. Love is God's idea, created by his design, and sustained by his strength. And there is no greater display of love than Christ on the cross. John 15:13 says this, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." No love is stronger than God's love in Christ, which is why we're called to love as Christ loves—fiercely, unconditionally, perfectly. The catch is this: we can't love without God's help. We need to experience his love in Christ and be fueled by the transformation it brings. In today's episode, we'll discuss the above and more! Couple's Challenge Read through 1 Corinthians 13 and do two things: * Write down how Jesus shows you each characteristic of love. * Write down how you can show each characteristic to each other. Once you've done that, discuss! Spread the Love If we've earned it we'd be honored to have your subscription. In short, SUBSCRIBE, RATE, and REVIEW this podcast on your app of choice. Is respect earned, given, or some combination of the two? What should a wife do if she wants to respect her husband but he's not acting respectably? The biblical idea of respect in marriage can be tricky against our cultural backdrop, but it's worth hashing through because we see a beautiful picture of the gospel on the other side. In this episode, Ryan and Selena discuss the concept of wives respecting their husbands as instructed in 1 Peter 3: Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 1 Peter 3:1-2 To best understand these instructions, it's vital to understand the context of 1 Peter as a book and what he's addressing in the early church. Listen in as we start that conversation! Couple's Challenge Read 1 Peter 1-5. Seek an understanding of the context of the book and discuss chapter 3 in terms of what it means for your marriage.
