On October 6, 1998, 21 year old University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard encountered 2 men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, on a night out of drinking beers and shooting pool. The two men soon realized Matthew was gay and came up with a plan to attack, rob, and rob his house. They ended up leaving Matthew tied to a fence on a desolate road where he wasn’t discovered until 18 hours later, barely alive. He was transported to the hospital and would remain in a coma for 6 days until his battered body gave up. While the men who murdered Matthew insisted the crime was motivated by the intentions to rob him and burglarize his house, however, many more people felt as though it was motivated by homophobia. While Matthew was not the only gay person to be attacked and/or killed in the United States, his story resonated with people all over the world and to this day remains one of the most heartbreaking cases that cast a spotlight on small the anti-gay sentiment at the time in small town America https://www.vanityfair.com/news/1999/13/matthew-shepard-199903 https://www.matthewshepard.org/

On October 3, 2016, father of 3 Donald ‘DJ’ Fickey, Jr. was killed by a shotgun blast to the left side of his face in Flintstone, Georgia. A number of conflicting stories emerged from the onset from the various witnesses at the scene, but one thing was certain among all of them - DJ did not shoot himself. Yet, the assistant medical examiner with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) ruled his death a suicide, when clearly all of the evidence pointed to this being anything but a self-inflicted gunshot wound. So, as it stands, DJ’s case is considered closed and is no longer being investigated. DJ’s sister, Amanda Shirley has been working tirelessly to get anyone and everyone to understand - DJ’s death is a homicide and a killer is walking free. See all the links below if you would like to help - sign the petition, share, and/or donate to the costs of getting DJs case re-opened and investigated. https://justicefordj.com/ https://www.gofundme.com/f/wwqw3-justice-for-dj https://www.change.org/p/help-support-justice-for-dj-and-demand-this-case-be-brought-in-front-of-a-grand-jury/u/22814017?recruiter=328583737&utm_source=share_update&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=share_twitter_responsive https://www.facebook.com/groups/111926779427988/ https://twitter.com/justicefordj88?lang=en

On February 12, 2008, 15 year old Lawrence King was seated in his computer lab in class working on an English paper when 14 year old Brandon McIreney pulled a gun from his back pack and shot Lawrence twice in the back of the head. Lawrence died 2 days later. The tension between the boys had been growing the the days and weeks leading up to the shooting, as Lawrence had been subjected to incessant bullying and taunting from not only Brandon, but several of the boys in his class. In his attempt to turn things around on his tormentors, Lawrence began teasing and taunting Brandon back, which enraged Brandon. The school seemingly did very little as the problems between the boys continued to escalate.

WARNING: This episode contains some details involving child abuse and neglect and may be disturbing to some listeners. Listener discretion is strongly advised. On February 26, 2020, Netflix released a documentary entitled “The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez” where we heard the harrowing tale of an 8 year old who was beaten and batter to death by his mother Pearl Fernandez and her boyfriend Isauro Aguirre in May of 2013, despite numerous reports made to the Department of Children and Family Services that it was strongly suspected Gabriel was being severely abused by his caregivers. We are not going to go over all the details of what happened to Gabriel, but rather, why. Why was he overlooked time and time again, and repeated left in the care of his mother and her boyfriend, when it was evident he was suffering an incredible amount of physical abuse? This is an examination of how Gabriel Fernandez was failed by the system meant to protect him. https://www.the-sun.com/news/510383/8-times-gabriel-fernandez-pleaded-for-help-from-telling-teacher-he-was-shot-punched-to-showing-guard-horror-injuries/   https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2018/10/la-county-dcfs-failed-protect-gabriel-fernandez/571384/   https://childwelfaremonitor.org/2018/11/06/why-no-one-saved-gabriel-fernandez/   https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-02-26/netflix-the-trials-of-gabriel-fernandez-docuseries-coverage

This is the 6th and final part of a multi part series. If you haven’t listened to episodes 134, 135, 136, 137, and 138, pause this now and listen to those first. WARNING: This episode contains details involving the death of a young child and may be difficult to listen to. Listener discretion is advised Zachary Andrew Turner was murdered by the hands of his mother on August 18, 2003 at the age of 13 months. She also was responsible for the murder of Zachary’s father, Andrew David Bagby, 1 year 9 months and 14 days earlier. In this series, we are going to examine the entire timeline from the very beginning to see just how preventable this tragedy should have been, to examine the warning signs that so many people overlooked, and discuss just how fair the justice system should be when it comes to the rights of parents - especially when that parent is actually facing indictment for her child’s father. https://www.childandyouthadvocate.nf.ca/pdfs/turner-v1.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EQI0bO9KSw https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/no-need-for-zachary-turner-to-die-death-review-1.596561

On Sunday June 15th, 1997, Staff Sergeant Ron Parkhurst inexplicably abandoned his job as a recruiter at his office in Huntington Beach and drove to Las Vegas, Nevada. Six days later, he was found dead, floating in Lake Mead with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. To this day, his murder is unsolved. In this episode, we explore Ron’s possible state of mind when he decided to leave California, what in his background may have led to him seemingly abruptly walk out on his life, what happened in the days leading up to his death, and how he ended up dead in Lake Mead. I have had a chance to speak to Orange County Register Journalist Keith Sharon who has written just about the only article out there on this case, and will be talking to him further about it. On Monday May 6th, 1996, wife and mother Sherri Dally dropped her two children off at school, stopped at Target to do some shopping before heading home where she operated a daycare. She never made it home. Her van was found in the Target parking lot, abandoned, her keys in the ignition, purchases and handbag on the seat, but no sign of Sherri. Witnesses later came forward to say they saw Sherri being arrested by a blonde police officer wearing a tan pants suit. But records indicated no arrest was made that day by any local law enforcement agency. Who arrested Sherri and more importantly, where was she taken? In March of 2001, 20 year veteran LAPD Officer Irsie Henry and his wife Sharon moved into a neighborhood bustling with families who enjoyed regular gatherings and social get togethers. While having an officer move into the neighborhood seemed like a good thing at the beginning, it soon became clear that Irsie had no intentions of making nice with this new neighbors. Thus would begin a years long campaign of harassment and terror that would have these neighbors held under siege as their new officer neighbor disrupted and intruded on all of their lives, all the while using his badge as a shield as a means of conducting himself with impunity. On October 30, 1984, Robin Hoynes was closing out the business day at her job as the manager of the KFC in Torrance, California.  She was due to spend the night at her friend's house and be home the next morning to spend Halloween at home, but she never showed up.  On Halloween morning, the opening manager arrived at the store only to discover Robin stabbed to death.  The motive appeared to be robbery, but if that was the case, the killer got away with nothing because Robin had already placed the day's deposit into the safe.  Her murder would remain unsolved for the next 20 Halloween's, until a fresh set of eyes noticed something about the crime scene that didn't seem to fit, and a woman who kept a dark secret for two decades finally came forward would finally lead to an arrest.

This is the fourth and final part of our series entitled The Tale of Who Killed Stacey Stites. On April 23, 1996, 19 year old Stacey Stites was strangled to death and her body was dumped off the side of a road in Bastrop, Texas. Swabs taken revealed the presence of semen, leading authorities to surmise the motive for the murder was sexual assault. Her fiance, Giddings Police Officer Jimmy Fennell, emerged as a strong suspect early in the investigation until it was revealed the DNA of the semen was not a match to Fennell. The case was at a standstill for about a year when investigators finally caught a break – a match for the DNA was found in the criminal database belonging to an African American Bastrop resident named Rodney Reed. While he first denied knowing Stacey, and denied having anything to do with her murder, when he was told his DNA was found in her body, he changed his story – he did know Stacey. They were having a consensual sexual relationship and he said he had intercourse with her a couple days before she was killed. But he wasn’t believed, and that, along with the forensic and scientific evidence presented at trial was enough to convict Rodney and he was subsequently sentenced to death. In the years since, information has come to light that no only points to Rodney having had an affair with Stacey, but also the science used to convicted him was junk. He is one month away from being executed, as all of his appeals have been denied, and the Texas Governor Greg Abbott has refused to grant Rodney clemency. Is Texas about to execute an innocent man? Listen and decide for yourself. And if you believe in his innocence, please take action NOW and sign the petition on Change.org – Stop the Execution of Rodney Reed.

On December 28, 2017, Andrew Finch was sitting in his Wichita, Kansas when he heard some sort of commotion outside.  Curious, he stepped out onto his porch only to be blinded by flood lights and confronted and surrounded by heavily armed Wichita Police officers.  Before anyone had a change to react or respond to officer's commands, one officer discharged his rifle, striking Andrew in the chest, piercing his heart.  The police were called in to the scene by way of an emergency call, claiming one person had been shot dead, and other family members were taken hostage, and the house was doused with gasoline.  But once officers stormed the house, there was nothing of the sort going on.  It was a hoax.  A fake call known as "swatting" initiated by an online video game player in retaliation against a rival. But the address given for the swatting to take place was fake too.  And Andrew Finch became an unwitting victim in somebody else's deadly game.

From 1985-1988, a killer was trolling the streets of South Los Angeles, picking up women, shooting them in the chest, sexually assaulting them, and dumping them in alleyways hidden under garbage.  Then one survived and he went dormant.  Or so investigators thought.  And suddenly, in 2002, the killer suddenly resurfaced, with another killing that year, another in 2003 and again in 2007.  He was then dubbed the Grim Sleeper, and by the time he resurfaced, DNA technology, along with ballistics, had linked his most recent killings to the one's from years past, and soon, it became evident they city of Los Angeles had a serial killer on their hands.  But, like so many unsolved cases in recent years, technology had caught up with the Grim Sleeper, and he would finally be given a name - Lonnie Franklin - a nondescript, well-known, well-liked, life-long resident of South LA.  I am joined by Kate with the Ignorance Was Bliss Podcast as we discuss the details and the motives of this man's long criminal history.

Last year in Episode 64, we discussed the unsolved murder of Debbie Dorian.  She was raped and murdered on August 22, 1996.  Her childhood friend, Katina, reached out to me last September and asked if I would be willing to discuss her case on our show, which I did.  Katina did not join me on the show, but she did provide me with as much information as she could about the case, as well as Debbie, and their friendship.  Well, today, her killer was arrested.  His name is Nickey Stane and his DNA has been linked to not only Debbie's rape and murder, but also several other women who were sexually assaulted by this man, and their cases had gone cold too.  But Debbie was his only murder, that we know of.  Today, I am joined by Katina, in a short phone conversation about the news that broke today and the arrest that has been finally made in Debbie's case.  Thank you for all you've done for Debbie and her family, Katina.

Dreamers, this is the 4th and final part of our series where we are taking a look at the questionable conviction of Kevin Cooper. The crime itself, a horrifying massacre that stunned a quiet, rural community, was only compounded by a police investigation tainted with lies, manufacturing AND destruction of evidence, cover ups, witness intimidation, racism, and the overwhelming desire to force evidence to fit their narrative by any means necessary. I believe Kevin Cooper is an innocent man sitting on death row as we speak. In our series, we will be looking at all the reasons why this case needs to be reevaluated before it’s too late, and by the time we are finished, I’m certain, most of you will agree, this man has unjustly spent 35 years condemned to die…

September 16, 2019
Dreamers, we are about to dive into a case that I would argue is the mother-load of all things you would expect to never happen in our justice system here in the United States.  By the end of this story, if you are angry, sad, if you find yourself in disbelief or disillusioned and embittered about this travesty of justice, trust me, you are not alone. There is who I believe to be an innocent man sitting on California’s death row as we speak.  15 years and 7 months ago, he was scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection in what is known as the death chamber in San Quentin State Prison.  At the age of 46 at the time, he had been in prison for more than 20 years and was slated to become the 11thman executed in California since the death penalty was re-established in 1978.  The Governor at the time, Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to order a stay for what would be the very first execution of his term, citing overwhelming evidence of the condemned man’s guilt. But I say Schwarzenegger, you were wrong. And by the grace of the 9th circuit federal appeals court, who intervened in the final hours of what was to be this man’s last night on Earth, they ordered his execution to be stayed.  3 hours and 42 minutes before the State of California was set to end this man’s life.  3 hours and 42 minutes away from putting an innocent man to death. And just a few hours after that, the United States Supreme Court refused to overturn the federal appellate court’s decision, marking the first time in a very long time that our country’s highest court agreed with a stay of execution in California. As it stands now, nobody on California’s death row is going to be executed anytime soon.  If ever again.  As a matter of fact, even though it is still on the books and defendants can still be sentenced to death, the death chamber has essentially been decommissioned and dismantled as of this year.  So, this man, who I believe is factually innocent, along with more than 700 men and women currently living on death row, all have a reprieve.  For now.  So, how and why is this condemned man still alive today?  How did he manage to dodge death, to live another day?  Well, he has lot of supporters.  Not just your run of the mill picketers.  He’s got some big names backing him…Sean Penn, Danny Glover, Jeaneane Garofalo, Angela Davis, Kim Kardashian, Reverend Jesse Jackson, even the Pope…dozens of politicians, and countless everyday people pulling for him.  And it’s not because they are anti-death penalty advocates, though they may or may not be, that is not the issue at hand here.  They are pulling for him because he is innocent. Coming up later this week, Killafornia Dreaming will be delving deep into this story, how this all happened and why I strongly believe an innocent man is sitting on death row for murders he did not commit.  We will be presenting a multiple part series, going over all the facts of the case in great detail, and by the time we are finished, I’m certain, most of you will agree, this man has unjustly spent 35 years condemned to die…   Stay tuned dreamers…I promise, it will be worth the wait…

On the evening of August 1st, 1942, leading into the early morning hours of the 2nd, Jose Diaz had attended a birthday party in what is today known as the city of Maywood. He would be discovered beaten, stabbed and unresponsive just outside the fence surrounding the house. With so many conflicting witness statements, law enforcement, becoming more and more frustrated with the influx of Mexican Americans flooding into Los Angeles, they decided to conduct a dragnet, arresting anyone who was Mexican. Tensions between them, along with the incoming servicemen in California preparing to head off to fight the War the US had been thrust into following the attacks on Pearl Harbor, would erupt the following summer. 5 days of rioting would ensue, leading to one of the most pivotal events in Mexican American History.

In October of 2012, Newport Beach residents Peter and Quee Choo Chadwick inexplicably failed to show up to pick up their 2 youngest sons from their bus stop. What happened to the couple remained a mystery until the following morning when 911 in San Diego received a call from Peter claiming his wife had been murdered and taken into Mexico to be chopped up. But his story didn’t add up and he was soon arrested and charged with his wife’s murder. Her body was discovered in a trash dumpster the following day. Two months later, Peter was granted bail and two years later, he jumped it. He remained a fugitive from justice for more than 4 years, up until this past week, August 5th, 2019, when he was finally taken into custody in a town about an hour outside Mexico City. Joining me for a portion of this story is the host of the Minds Of Madness Podcast, Tyler. His show covered this case back in July while it was still a manhunt.

In 2002, Brian Banks was living his dream. He was a popular standout linebacker at Poly High School in Long Beach, about to embark on his senior year. By the time he was 16, he was already being noticed by some of the best colleges in the country, yet had already made a verbal commitment to take his talents to USC. He was definitely headed towards being one of the top prospects in his draft class when his time came to realize his dream of one day playing in the NFL. But all of that was sidelined one summer afternoon, when following a romantic encounter with 15 year old classmate Wanetta Gibson turned bad. Really bad. When they parted ways, Brian thought things were good. But they weren’t. Later that same day, Wanetta reported to police that Brian Banks had raped her. And with that, Brian’s life as he knew it was over. A decade later, this story would take an unexpected turn, and in examining this case today, it opens up an important conversation about women and sexual assault.

But would Weini, if she were around, want her story to be considered as a component of the agenda to push higher minimum wages? Maybe not, as her story ran much, much deeper than that. Her story was a matter of pride and dignity which her family felt was being trampled in the fight for higher wages.

Today, we are going to discuss two different stories...two women, one who changed her identity to hide from her family and everyone in her previous life, and the other who was running from the law.  The first story leading into the second involves the sad tale of Lori Erica Ruff...we take a look at how she managed to become a completely different person and the path her life took in the ensuing years.  Next we are going to discuss our fugitive.  In 1975 Susan LeFevre was busted by an undercover Michigan State Trooper selling heroin at a local pizza restaurant.  She claimed that the prosecutor pressured her into pleading guilty, admit to the crimes, and she would avoid jail time and be sentenced to probation.  But, when she went before the judge, he ended up sentencing her to 10 to 20 years...a sentence she says she didn't deserve.  A sentence from which she would escape, with the help of her grandpa, and she would run and hide all the way to California where she began a whole new life, got married, had children...had everything you could ever want...until one day when her past caught up with her.
