Hip fractures have a major impact on our healthcare system with an economic burden estimated to be over $20 billion per year. Due to the increasing age of our population, hip fractures will have an even greater impact. In addition to the economic burden, hip fractures are associated with an increase in mortality and often result in major changes in one’s lifestyle. As a result, the detection, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis becomes an important health strategy.
