It feels like we're on a roll with routines and academic progress... but we're also wondering: Where do we go from here? Are we going to take a summer break? Should we be signing up for fall activities? We talk through this and more in our two segments: "State of the Family" (what's going on) and "The Nitty Gritty" (what we're actually doing every day).   Highlights from this episode:  -Are we going to take a summer break? What about signing up for fall things? It's hard to know what to do!   -Where are we at with screen time? Angela shares an update about the changes to their screen routine.   -What about unmet academic expectations? There’s no one right way to handle these days at home. Sometimes it feels great to tackle a project. Sometimes it feels best to just go with the flow. We’re giving you permission to do what you need to do. We also have an honest conversation about self-regulation and screen time and setting boundaries that best support our kids. Listen in as we process where we’re each at this week.   Highlights from this episode: -We all handle the stress of these days differently: increased productivity or increased rest or a mix of both!   -It feels like we’re getting master class on our kids right now. We should give ourselves credit for how much we’re learning and connecting and growing together.   -Deep dive authentically: Use this time to go deeper into your kids’ interests. How can we honor ALL the kinds of learning, even the ones that don't show up on a lesson plan or schedule? How can we make room for more non-traditional learning when our kids have so much on their plates with distance learning and our own homeschool plans? How can we balance the "must-do's" with the "want-to's" and how can we value BOTH kinds of learning equally? Listen in as we process setting up healthy boundaries for our kids' workloads (even saying "no" to assignments sometimes!) and partnering with our kids to embrace the BIG PICTURE of learning all the time.   Highlights from this episode -Are your kids asking hard questions about when this will be over? Do you have kids who are expressing increased "neediness"? We feel you!   -How are you handling this season of increased screen time? Take advantage of screen time to get your own alone time or a mental break!   -Can you get out for a walk by yourself? Solo walks are a great way to get in some quality alone time and a little reprieve from parenting.    -Is it time for a change in your routine? Making changes doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong--it just means it's time for a change!   -Have you said "no" to any of your kids' distance learning assignments? Do you need to? Consider this your permission slip to cut back on what's being asked of your kids! YOU know what's best for your kids and YOU are ultimately in charge.   -Are you noticing how much learning isn't planned out on your schedule? The shock of our new reality is wearing off and we’re settling into a marathon pace, which means we’re beginning to find routines that work. But in classic Maren and Angela fashion, our routines are unique to each of us and our personalities! In our “State of the Family” update, we discuss how we’re using screen time for our kids to support our own self-care efforts. In our “The Nitty Gritty” update, we dive into the ACTUAL curriculum and resources we’re using for homeschool. Well, at least what’s working this week. Taking it day-by-day, friends!   Highlights from this episode -Anyone else struggling to keep up with all the online/distance learning schedules and usernames and passwords? Give yourself credit! There are so many details to keep track of! -Is it time to shake it up or settle in? Some of our kids need a change, while some of our kids have had enough change for a while.    -Are you seeing the upside of online learning for any of your kids? Some kids are thriving with the chance to work independently and with accountability to their teachers (not us parents).   -We all know how important consistent and planned self-care is, but in this time, it's also good to practice "in-the-moment self care"--asking ourselves "What do I need right now?"   Mentions Glennon Doyle’s Family Meeting on Instagram The Daily Show Beast Academy Brave Writer class CNN 10 Stamped Logic of English Typing.com Dreambox Wrap ups Mark Rober science videos Mystery Doug Endless Alphabet apps PE Class: The Body Coach   FREE Homeschool High 5 Guide You don't have to do a million things. We’re back with another conversation covering our two pandemic check-in topics: The State of the Family (what’s going on with everyone at home) and The Nitty Gritty (what we’re ACTUALLY doing for homeschool). We talk about heightened emotions, anxiety, deschooling, struggling to get adequate self-care, and feeling like we’re living in Groundhog Day. “Okay campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties cause its cold out there...its cold out there every day.”   Highlights from this episode -It feels like Groundhog Day: Rhythms and routines are so helpful, but also every day is starting to feel the same. How can we try to make certain days distinct or special?   -Living with intensified emotions: We're living with immediate and long-term uncertainty, which is creating BIG feelings for all of us.   -Finding balance takes trial and error—and TIME: Some kids have too much to do, some kids don’t have enough. We’re still figuring out that “sweet spot” for everyone.   -Deschooling: With some of our kids being off schools and co-ops, we find ourselves doing some unexpected deschooling. More pjs, movies, and slow days as we adjust to life at home again.   -Self-care is not easy right now: Introverts are home, but with people all the time. Extroverts are with people all the time, but stuck at home. It’s hard for EVERYONE right now.   -This doesn’t have to be the time for your biggest personal growth. It’s ok to do what’s comfortable for you instead of trying new things, accomplishing big tasks, and pushing personal development.   -Easing up on expectations and being ADAPTABLE: Kids don’t want to sit for read aloud this week? Ok. Need a later start to the day? Ok. Pairing read aloud with tv shows at night? Ok. We’re making adjustments to accommodate the emotions and space we all need.   Mentions Groundhog Day Glennon Doyle’s Family Meeting on Instagram Melissa Urban on Instagram The Popcast Dreambox Hopscotch Mark Rober on YouTube CNN 10 Calm   Life in the Pandemic: Marriage, Food, and Self-Care We’re doing another LIVE recording of one of our monthly episodes for our $5 Squad! We’re gonna be here weekly for a while to process with you through this pandemic because, well, 1) we’re home anyway and 2) we want to laugh, encourage each other, and get real about homeschool. We cover two big topics: “The State of the Family” (what’s going on for each of us) and “The Nitty Gritty” (what we are ACTUALLY doing for homeschool and life). Distance learning, homeschooling, working spouses, spouses at home, prioritizing mental health for ourselves and our families, navigating all the new resources, figuring out routines... We’re talking about ALL. OF. IT.   Highlights from this episode -How much info do we share with our kids? Some kids are helped by having information; others are helped by being shielded from it. Give yourself credit for navigating all of this.    -How do we balance a flexible routine with free time? How do we adapt when we're feeling out of balance? We need something in place to anchor us, but we also need open-ended time.   -Are you dealing with FOMO from all the amazing new online resources that are available?! Give yourself permission to NOT have to take advantage of everything. You can skip some amazing good things. It’s ok.    -Easy things are hard right now. Hard things are harder right now. Give yourself grace for not doing all the things all the time.   -Being told what to do all day is hard. Our kids need choice and freedom to explore their own interests for their own wellbeing.    -Our kids are doing their best under these circumstances, too. Remember, just because our kids can do something once (e.g. bake cookies, clean up their mess, etc.) doesn’t mean they can then always do it after that without support.    -The priority is everyone’s mental health. We’re not experts on homeschooling through a pandemic, but we are here to process this new reality with you. Our calendars might be empty, but there’s A LOT happening every day: checking in with family and friends, keeping up with news and information, planning and cooking and cleaning a lot more than normal, managing more (and bigger!) emotions and conflicts… and of course, there’s homeschooling. We talk about how we can support our kids and ourselves through this challenging experience, and we talk about what we’re actually doing (and NOT doing) for homeschool right now.   Highlights from this episode -Transitions are HARD, and we are navigating all kinds of changes with social distancing, schooling, spouses at home, and staying up on a global pandemic and its impact on our own lives. Kids are very intuitive about our energy. If we’re stressed or anxious, they’re going to feel the effects of that. They will need more grace and support as they come in contact with new and complicated emotions and a dramatic change in their routines.   -How can we support our kids? One thing we can do is to NOT ask too much of them. Voluntary or involuntary homeschool is not school, but this is also not a normal version of being home! Hold space for bigger emotions and reactions, and approach our kids’ feelings and responses with support, connection, and curiosity. Engage in pleasant common experiences that help us all feel connected and safe. Find a way to get into THEIR world to re-establish a connection after a hard interaction, like a meltdown or argument.    -How can we support ourselves? Delegate! You can’t possibly do all the chores alone. Establish a daily habit of self-care: naps, taking walks, yoga, bingeing a show, talking with a friend, etc. Relax your standards: This is not the time to implement major screen time limitations. Prioritize connection for everyone in your house with tools like FaceTime, Zoom, Marco Polo, text, online games with friends, etc.   -What about homeschool? The priority right now is HEALTH: physical, mental, and emotional. Everything we do should be in support of that priority. Kids are learning all the time, so it will be ok if your kids do nothing "academic" right now. Instead of adding on more, look at paring down and stay open to adapting often.   FREE Homeschool High 5 Guide You don't have to do a million things. Start here, with a high five from us! We recently posted a quote from Morgan Jenkins that said, “You’re not well read if all you read is white authors.” And we agree! We’re talking about the importance of diverse books with our guest, author and activist Christine Platt. Christine helps us explore the concept of books as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors. Plus, she challenges our ideas about the kinds of stories we’re choosing when we read diverse books: “It’s really important to show that all communities and all families experience trauma, but they also experience joy. Joy needs to be reflected in your diverse library collection.” Join us for this essential and inspiring conversation.   Find Christine on Instagram and her website. Check out her TED Talk on minimalism. And find all her books in our Amazon Shop!   Highlights -“Everyone should be reading diverse books, not just children, not just adults. To understand others’ lived experiences, to learn and understand how systemic racism and oppression affect non-white communities. For homeschooling parents to make sure that you’re aware of the world and not unintentionally perpetuating myths and stereotypes. It really boils down to expanding your knowledge for personal and societal edification. We should all be reading diverse books.” -It’s natural for all of us to gravitate toward books that are mirrors, so when choosing diverse books for ourselves or our children, we can ask, “Am I choosing a mirror or a window?” -How can we be critical thinkers when it comes to choosing books? Don’t just seek “diversity”—ask yourself: What is it I want to teach through this book? What is the story you want to tell? -“Be mindful of books that only tell and show lived experiences through trauma. It’s really important to show that all communities and all families experience trauma, but they also experience joy. Joy needs to be reflected in your diverse library collection.” -“Reading regular stories reflecting lived experiences is so powerful.” -The benefit of reading windows and sliding glass doors for yourself is that it makes you curious, and you can see the value of giving your kids that same feeling as readers.   Mentions Rudine Sims Bishop  Here Wee Read We Need Diverse Books OurStory from We Need Diverse Books online There, There by Tommy Orange Mary and The Trail of Tears Whose Land?   App School Guide Meet your new favorite homeschool resource! "Do audiobooks count?" We're here to shout it from the rooftops: YES! Listening to audiobooks, or "ear-reading" as it's also known, is a valuable and legitimate form of reading, with some of its own unique benefits not found with eye-reading. Let's demystify the idea of eye-reading superiority and celebrate all the amazing things about ear-reading and audiobooks!   We'll each be sharing our Top 10 audiobooks for kids in a bonus episode for our Squad on Patreon. That's 20 audiobooks total! Hop on over to Patreon to get this bonus episode and alllll the other rewards.   Highlights from this episode:  -Listening to audiobooks can help readers develop a writing voice, understand sentence structure, boost their vocabulary, make connections with abstract thinking and metaphors, and learn naturally some elements of writing that might get missed with eye reading. -Audiobooks are a way to help more people experience the joy of books. Eye-reading is not accessible for everyone. Plus, audiobooks can be a perfect match for differently wired kids or readers with non-visual learning styles. -Audiobooks can help our readers to know that reading is fun, especially when eye-reading is difficult.  -Hearing stories can help build scaffolding and support for readers as they work toward eye-reading.  -Ear-reading exposes readers to more genres and more information at an earlier age. This can help readers grow their love of books. -Audiobooks can give our kids the best example of reading: the best narrators, the best pronunciation of words, the best way to read the story as it is written.   Mentions 26: Where We Demystify Audio Content 106: Where Our Kids Are Differently Wired With Debbie Reber MP3 players Libby Hoopla Scribd Audible (

It’s seems like there’s a lot of stigma and shame around screens, especially for us homeschoolers. But should there be? Is all screen time created equal? We’ve embraced what we call “app schooling” for a few years, and now we want to help take away some of the shame around using screens for learning. Apps can take the pressure off us (and our kids!) on busy days and around difficult subjects (*cough* math *cough*). We love the variety, efficiency, and freedom apps have to offer. Listen as we talk about how app schooling can help keep homeschool simple, real, and fun!   Show us your apps! Tag us in your stories with the apps you’re using! We’ll share some in our stories and create a highlight!   Highlights from this episode: App schooling frees us up to expend energy on other things, including our strengths and activities we enjoy. App schooling keeps us moving forward academically, even through busy days and challenging seasons. Apps can offer a more efficient (and exciting!) method of teaching and learning. Technology is kind of our kids’ language—it can be a more comfortable way for them to learn. Did we have a preconceived notion about how we would teach our kids, formed long before we reached this educational stage? Do we need to reevaluate our ideas and standards around screens? App schooling can give all of us a much-needed break from direct teaching. Be ok with trying something! You can always pull back.   Mentions Episode 126: Where We Begin with Deschooling Nature Series   Introducing the $5 Squad on Patreon: One Level. So, like, what even is deschooling?! The fact is this: We are immersed in a schooled mindset. It's the air we breathe, the water we swim in. Deschooling is a way to reprogram our thinking about learning.  We're going to talk through this essential homeschooling tool: What is it? Why bother? What does it actually look like? And what comes next?   Highlights from this episode: Learning is natural and happening all the time. Deschooling doesn't mean it's a free for all.  Deschooling lets us concentrate on connection.  Deschooling teaches us that deep thinking is deep thinking--it doesn't matter if it's about math or Minecraft. Don't use your status as an adult as a weapon. As parents, we are continually deschooling ourselves.   Mentions Episode Where We Stage an Intervention (and all our other episodes) Click here for all the books we mentioned!   Introducing the $5 Squad on Patreon: One Level. Listening to Saira will challenge your ideas about education and embolden you to go your own way with whatever method of learning and living your family embraces.   In this episode: Saira Siddiqui is a Digital Parent Educator, advocating critically thinking, anti-bias, self-directed education (unschooling), and stronger emotional health for parents and children: "The goal of education is critical thinking.” We talk a lot about unschooling and what it means to Saira: “Unschooling and self-direction isn’t just how we learn, it’s a mindset. It’s a lifestyle.” We touch on deschooling ourselves and unlearning our educational backgrounds, including questioning the idea that work and home have to be separate: “What are my passions? What am I pursuing? What am I contributing?” Saira also explains how unschooling changed her own path: “It wasn’t until I really truly embraced unschooling that my own trajectory took off.” Plus, we talk about the value of self-direction in learning: “A lot of what makes us successful as adults has to be very intrinsic.” Lastly, Saira shares about their family’s choice to live abroad: “When you live in a place, you see people for how they see themselves, not how you see them.”  Connect with Saira on Instagram, Facebook, and her website.   Get the Extended Interview! What if what saves your homeschool isn’t anything you can order on Amazon or put on a report card? We’re talking about the ways nature and self-care are totally saving the day for us. PLUS we’re sharing a snippet from our class on The Four Tendencies. This is *THE* framework that’s helped make our relationships and homeschool better, day after day.   Four Tendencies & Homeschool This might be the most practical of all personality profiles. While other profiles focus on ideas and theories, the Four Tendencies focuses on the here and now. How do you meet expectations? How do your kids meet expectations? When we know how our kids best meet expectations, we can reduce homeschool conflict and help motivate our kids to be efficient, effective, and purposeful. This class will help you pinpoint how you best respond to expectations, giving you techniques to have a more productive and positive homeschool. And just as importantly, you’ll learn how to work with your kids’ different Tendencies. Win/Win!   Check out all our classes at homeschoolunrefined.com/classes.   Each class is $10, with all four classes bundled for just $30. (Psst... We’re continuing our fall mini-series on what’s saving our homeschool RIGHT NOW. This week, we’re talking about the e-reader that’s changing reading for one of our kids and the master homeschool plan we can’t homeschool without. PLUS we’re sharing an excerpt from our Enneagram & Homeschool Class! We look at Enneagram numbers 1, 2, and 3, and talk about how they might show up in homeschooling. Embracing Enneagram in our homeschool has empowered us to be ourselves. That kind of freedom can change your homeschool, too!   Enneagram & Homeschool Class Enneagram is our new love. We think about it often, and the more we live, the more we see it show up as an important factor in understanding how each of us process and learn. In this class, we not only go through each number, but we teach you how each number thrives. We talk about what might be perceived strengths and weaknesses, and we equip you with ways to use them both for life-long skills. Again, the goal is not to get you to know your (or your child’s) exact number, but to set you on the path. Giving you the right questions to ask yourself, helping you notice things in your life that will give you clues to each number’s habits, needs, and interests.   Check out all our classes at homeschoolunrefined.com/classes.   Each class is $10, with all four classes bundled for just $30. About the time you think you’ve got homeschool figured out, it’s time to adapt again. So we’re talking about What’s Saving Our Homeschool RIGHT NOW. Give yourself credit for being adaptable and finding what works for you! We’re also sharing an excerpt from our Personalities + Homeschool classes. This week, we’re talking through the differences between S/N (Sensing/Intuition) in the Myers-Briggs 16-types personality system. You’ll hear our insights as a Sensor (Angela) and an Intuitive (Maren) and discover how understanding the S/N dynamic can impact your homeschool.   Myers-Briggs & Homeschool Class This personality profile was our first love in the personality world. We have studied it for years, and it’s long been part of our everyday conversations. In this class we’ll go into each of the eight letters in the Myers-Briggs and how each one might affect the parent and the homeschooler. Our goal is not to get you to understand your exact letter combination (although you’ll probably come out with some ideas), but to set you on the right path to self-awareness and child-awareness. This class will change your mindset about how all of our brains are wired, and you will rest assured that you can work with whatever combination of letters you have in your home. There is no ideal homeschool personality. Homeschool can work for ANYONE! We’ll show you how!    Check out all our classes at homeschoolunrefined.com/classes.   Each class is $10, with all four classes bundled for just $30. (Psst... A lot of homeschooling and parenting is about helping our kids develop skills for their toolboxes. In this episode, we’re talking about one of our favorite tools: self-evaluation. We get into why this skill is so important and how we build self-evaluation into our homeschool—from the planning stages to our daily routines to (gasp!) homeschooling without grades and report cards. Empowering our kids to self-evaluate bolsters their self-awareness and self-confidence, and it helps us exercise trust in them and ourselves—it’s the ultimate win-win! This is the podcast where we keep homeschool simple, real, and fun... and this episode is all about the FUN! Why focus on fun? Because as the Finnish proverb says, "Those things you learn without joy, you will forget easily." Research shows that learning happens best when everyone (including you!) is in a good mood and feels loved. We share some of the ways we're making homeschool fun and how we're prioritizing connection over lessons and to-do lists.   Share this episode with a friend and let’s keep the conversation going in our closed Facebook group: Unrefined Homeschoolers.⁣   Call to Action We have a goal of getting to 10K followers on Instagram and we need your help! You do not want to miss this packed hour where we celebrate 100 EPISODES(!!) of keeping homeschool simple, real & fun.  Celebrate with us because there is so much for YOU in this episode!  We’ll reflect on how we have changed and grown over the last 100 episodes (we asked our patrons to help us out with this, so listen for them, too!), we talk personalities and how much our homeschool has benefited from learning about them, and we tell you how you could win swag! THANK YOU for being part of this awesome community, whether you have listened to one episode or 100.  Thank you for supporting the message that WE are enough, and that doing more is not always the answer.  Thank you for thinking differently about homeschool right along with us.  WE are changing the conversation about homeschool one episode at a time.   Ep 23: What We Don't Do Ep 50: What We Don't Do: Holiday Edition Ep 49: Where Autopilot Saves the Day Ep 41: Where We Stage an Intervention Ep 27: Where We Appreciate the Highly Sensitive Person 16 Personalities Enneagram Institute We are giving away swag on Instagram and our Closed FB Group, Unrefined Homeschoolers.    Loving This Week Recaps Maren: Costco Socks, Ranch Dressing Mix, Last Man On Earth Angela: The Popcast with Knox and Jamie, AirPods, Better Homes and Gardens Dinnerware Set   Visit our website Support us on Patreon here. We practically grew up with Candace Cameron Bure as DJ on Full House and now we get to see her even more (Hallmark movies, Netflix, and her Instagram Stories are 💯).  So it felt a little like a reunion of sorts when we sat down with Candace for a fun chat about her new children’s book, Candace Center Stage, which is an inspiring book about trying new things, being brave, and having perseverance.  Besides talking books, we brought up our favorite topics: personalities, what we don’t do, giving ourselves credit, homeschooling & parenting.  It felt like we were having coffee with a good friend.  Can’t wait to do it again, Candace!   To hear our extended interview with Candace, support us on Patreon at www.patreon.com/homeschoolunrefined Candace Center Stage Find Candace on Instagram here.   Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict I'll Love You Forever by Robert Munsch A Star Is Born Soundtrack   Visit our website Support us on Patreon here.
