The Heat got a top-12 player in Jimmy Butler and moved on from Hassan Whiteside. The rest of the changes were largely made at the margins. Can they return a top-10 defense? Do they have enough shooting to surround Butler? Is Justise Winslow ready to take a significant step? The Blazers new roster is loaded with guards and bigs and now much in the way of wing depth. What are they trying to accomplish with this roster construction? Why is Damien Lillard not getting any MVP odds from Vegas? The Magic returned to the playoffs last year under the leadership of Steve Clifford. The are bringing just about everyone back with the sole veteran addition of Al-Faruq Aminu. The should only get better, right? It may very well depend upon whether the youngsters Mo Bamba and Markelle Fultz being allowed to play through mistakes. The Grizzlies moved on from Marc Gasol and Mike Conley since this time last season. They are rebuilding around a nice collection of young players in Ja Morant, Brandon Clarke, Jaren Jackson Jr., Tyus Jones and others. Under new head coach Taylor Jenkins what does this season hold for them? All of this and more.@LawtonWillis@willis_glen Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Boston Celtics were mentally broken at the end of last season. Now the Brooklyn Nets have signed up to deal with the things that come along with Kyrie Irving. Kemba Walker is now the third elite offensive point guard Brad Stevens has had on his team. Will it be a seamless transition? Having lost both Al Horford and Aaron Baynes what will they do at the center position? The Nuggets return a very talented team? Are they ready to ascend to the top of the Western Conference? With Nikola Jokic and Jamaal Murray as their top players how far can the duo take the team? All of this and more. @LawtonWillis@willis_glen Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode interesting offseason moves made by the Charlotte Thunder and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Hornets saw Kemba depart for Boston and brought in former Celtics guard Terry Rozier. How does that set them up for short term or long term prospects of winning? Also how does the loss of Kemba impact the development timelines of Miles Bridges, Malik Monk and the other young players on the roster? The Thunder saw another franchise player(s) leave town, but since losing Kevin Durant for nothing in return Sam Presti has managed to get a nice return for Paul George and Russell Westbrook. Where does that leave the franchise at the moment apart from having the best draft capital in the league? All of this and more.@LawtonWillis@willis_glen Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode interesting offseason moves made by the Atlanta Hawks and the Utah Jazz. The Hawks spent a ton of draft capital to acquire De’Andre Hunter and later drafted Cam Reddish. Despite the fact that their best defensive players and best shooters from last season have moved on some expect them to make the playoffs. Is that at all realistic? The Jazz stepped and acquired Mike Conley in an attempt to get to the top of the Western Conference. Is that enough. How will Conley’s presence effect the role of Donovan Mitchell? In this episode we review the interesting offseason(s) that the two teams that played in the NBA finals a few months back have had to navigate. The Toronto Raptors are largely running it back without Kawhi Leonard. Can Pascal Siakam pick up enough offensive workload to make them relevant in the Eastern Conference this season? The Warriors lost a host of relevant players including Kevin Durant. Klay Thompson is not likely to contribute much during the regular season. Chicago has an exciting group of young players but a lot of observers seem excited about them as a team to move up significantly in the standings this season. Do Dane and Glen see it that way? Also, is there any reason to think the Bulls and Kris Dunn will reach agreement on an extension before October deadline? In Dallas it's all about Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis this season. The Nets were one of the big winner this offseason using two maximum contract slots to lure Kyrie Irving and an injured Kevin Durant to Brooklyn. They have been a darling of the league the last few seasons punching, at times, above their weight with a combination of a solid culture and ascending players such as Spencer Dinwiddie and Caris LaVert. Now that they are talented as, basically, any team in the league will they be able to put it all together in year one and be a real contender? The Pelicans won the Zion lottery (literally), traded a no doubt top 10 player in the league and added veterans such as JJ Redick and Derrick Favors. Will they have a singular objecting on the season (win as many games as possible?) Or will there also be a developmental objective that at times takes a higher priority? All of this and more.@LawtonWillis@willis_glen Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Many observers seem to think the Wizards will be the worst team in the NBA this season. Glen is not buying that, why? What even should the objective be for Washington? Few people seem to notice that Isaiah Thomas is likely to be the starting point guard for this team, that should be a bigger story. The Timberwolves have, once again, done a full reset. But this looks like a more credible organization under the new leadership of Gersan Rossas. Potentially for the first time they will be going all in on building around Towns. What could that look like statistically? All over this and more.@LawtonWillis@willis_glen Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There seems to be a lot of optimism in Detroit about the Pistons. They added Derrick Rose but not much shooting and offensive firepower otherwise. The got basically full seasons from Blake Griffin and Reggie Jackson last season. How likely is that to be replicated? We like Bruce Brown quite a bit. What are our expctations? In Sacramento the Kings added Dewayne Dedmon, Trevor Ariza and Corey Joseph to one of the most exciting young-ish teams in the league. Will they be able to improve upon their 39 win total from last season?@LawtonWillis@willis_glen Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Indiana Pacers were extremely resourceful this offseason after seeing many of their key players from last season moved on. The pounced om Malcolm Brogdon with a sign and trade and nabbed TJ Warren when the Phoenix Suns were looking to create cap space for some reason. Victor Oladipo is not likely to be back until some time in 2020. Can they contend to host a first-round playoff series this season? The Spurs are the Spurs. More of the same seems likely except that Dejounte Murray should give them a full season. What will the ultra-talented Lonnie Walker give them? Will the dense improve from 20th last season to better than league average if DeMarre Carrol gets a handful of what were Marco Belinelli minutes last season? We do a forward-looking analysis of these teams exiting the all-star break. The Wizards are 10 games under .500 but still within reach of a potential playoff spot. Can Beal carry his team the rest of the way with some help from a few veterans and a couple of young guys playing for contracts? The Nets are above .500 and just got the services of Caris LeVert back. It seems unclear when Spencer Dinwiddie will return. They have a critical stretch of games right out of the gate. The rebuild is not in its origin they have a number of young players to start building with. How is the coaching staff helping or hurting that? The Knicks need to get back to a cap baseline from which they can build. But it was interesting to watch Emmanuel Mudiay this week. What other Knicks observations did we take away from the week? This week we cover two teams who will presumably be trying to improve on results from last season. The Hornets have a new General Manager and new head coach. But they are largely running back the same group apart from the switch from Dwight Howard to Bismack Biyombo. Kemba Walker will be a free agent next summer. Is there an obviously correct path for them this season? No, but we discuss. The Mavericks finally secured DeAndre Jordan and they are largely running the same group back after making a change at the center position. They only won 24 games last season so are playoff aspirations the least bit reasonable? We discuss. All of this and more.Follow Dane on Twitter: @DaneMooreNBAFollow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastLearn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week we cover the two teams that experienced the greatest amount of change and the top of their roster. What will the Cavaliers be in the second post-Lebron era? Kevin Love was the focal point of a pretty impressive offensive team in Minnesota in his mid-20s. How much of that Kevin Love is left? Do we know anything about have good of a head coach Tyrron Lue is? Are any of the young players on the roster capable of being a difference maker? All of a sudden in San Antonio it’s the post-Kahwi, post-Many and post-Parker era. But the roster still has an impressive collection of talent even if the construction does not make sense yet. Most projection systems have them missing the playoffs for the first time in a couple of decades. Is that going to happen? All of this and more.Follow Dane on Twitter: @DaneMooreNBAFollow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastLearn more about your ad choices. We don’t think the Heat front office is very excited about running this group back despite the fact that to a player there seems to be broad buy in to the Heat culture. Should the Hassan Whiteside experience be over? Or should Whiteside become a lower priority? What should Miami do with the multitude of guards they have on the roster? What should the plan be for this season regarding Justice Winslow? The Timberwolves made the playoffs last season for the first time in an eternity, but just barely. We are big fans of what the front office did over the offseason, but they key question as to whether or not this team will achieve better results than last season is whether or not these players will play for one another. Will they? All of this and more.Follow us on twitter: @presspodcast @DaneMooreNBA @willis_glen @LawtonWillis Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dwight Howard has replaced Marcin Gortat as the starting center in Washington. Is that going to make them a better team? We saw more from Bradley Beal last season as John Wall missed half of the regular season. He made his first All-Star team. Will Scott Brooks stagger Wall and Beal’s time on the court this season? That has not been the plan in previous seasons. Should that be the plan? Oklahoma City was able to convince Paul George to return. They’ve been a first round out in the last two postseasons. Can they get back to a level of being a team that is a threat to make a deeper run this season? Do the additions of Dennis Schroder and Nerlens Noel help? It really might work out well for the Thunder. All of this and more.Follow us on twitter: @presspodcast @DaneMooreNBA @willis_glen @LawtonWillis Learn more about your ad choices. We talk about a couple of surprise teams from last season. Both teams won 48 games and made some noise in the postseason. The Pacers pushed the Cavaliers as hard in the postseason as any team in the Eastern Conference. Victor Oladipo stepped up and had an all-NBA season and was awarded as the league’s most improved player. They are bringing back largely the same roster with the important addition of Tyreke Evans. What are the areas in which they need to demonstrate improvement? The Pelicans swept the Blazers in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. Jrue Holiday was the best guard in that series. They have added Julius Randle and Elfrid Payton. Will they have an opportunity to build upon last season and improve upon their results from last season? All of this and more.Follow Dane on Twitter: @DaneMooreNBAFollow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastLearn more about your ad choices. Detroit made bold moves last season but it did not move the needle for them. Stan Van Gundy is out and Dwayne Casey is in. Also in is a new front office leadership. The Pistons seem to be gearing up for a serious season but it’s hard to know invested the new leadership is in this roster. They had a hard time filling up a brand new arena last season, so that seems to be at least somewhat a part of the objective this season. We tackle the big questions. The Grizzlies are going to try to chase a serious season also. Is it as simple as return Conley to the floor along with what looks like an upgraded supporting cast? The Bulls have done well in the draft the last two seasons and have some exciting young talent on the team. They also invested money in Zach Lavine and Jabari Parker. But important decision loom with a number of other players on the roster. Also, who is going to play point guard? The Suns invested heavily in Devon Booker and brought in a new coach. They also had the number one overall pick in the draft. What are we watching for from the Suns this season? All of this and more. Philadelphia may have played this offseason conservatively while working through a search for a new GM. But they have very possibly the best young core group of players as any team in the league. They exceed expectations last season by a good measure. Is there room for them to have a better season than they did last season? The Denver Nuggets have an exciting young core as well and perhaps underperformed last season. They continue to be dysfunctional on the defensive end of the court. So they gave a big contract to Will Barton and signed Isaiah Thomas to a contract to be a bench scorer. Will that move the needle for this team at all? All of this and more. The Bucks added a legitimate coach after finally ending the Jason Kidd experiment. The roster is largely the same apart from a few veterans to help man the power forward and center positions. Can they challenge the big three of Boston, Toronto and Philadelphia? How might the coaching change impact the play of Giannis? Portland largely ran it back apart from their most important front court player off of the bench and their most important back court player off of the bench. Are the young guys ready to step up and help? How urgent is the Dame legacy situation? All of this and more. We know we cheated a bit by including Know in there but it seemed appropriate to contrast those players. We cover post lottery wings (Troy Brown, Zaire Smith, Donte DiVicenzo, Lonnie Walker, Kevin Huerter and Josh Okogie). We briefly discuss how weirdly different the three bigs taken late in the first round are (Moritz Wagner, Robert Williams and Omari Spellman). The Cavs lost a precious opportunity to make this series from the beginning when game one slipped away. Whether you blame that on the officials or JR Smith what we saw in game two was rich in observation for what we might expect to see happen the rest of the way. Will Lebron operate as a scorer or a facilitator? Can the Cavs find a way to defend the three point line and at the rim? Both conference finals seem to be at a competitive place. But watching the coaching adjustments in each series has been nothing short of fascinating. The Cavaliers are the only team of the four that is not relying on switching on defense and that really worked well for them in game 3. Will the presence of a traditional center continue to get them the match ups they want? The Warriors have been dealing with the Rockets switch heavy defensive scheme by relying on Kevin Durant’s individual offensive creation. Is that a good and sustainable idea. Also, is Steph Currt missing the presence of Zaza Pachulia to help him going offensively? All of this and more. The Raptors held true to the identity of their 2017-18 regular season, even without Fred Van Vleet. They were not strictly dependent upon the shooting of Lowry and DeRozan. The Wizards will need to try to defend in game 2 with suboptimal rim protection. The Sixers shortened their rotation in the second half versus the Heat and it made all the difference in the game. What will Spo do going into game 2? The Spurs were not very inspiring in their game 1 loss to the Warriors. Are their any adjustments they can make with Curry sitting out all of the first round? The conversation regarding the Mavericks on the podcast are limited to Ownership, Head of Basketball Operations, Coach and players. We don’t know if as the news unfolds if it will changed the viewed expressed on this episode. We will address that if and when appropriate. The Hawks have gotten good rookie campaigns from their drafted rookies John Collins and Tyler Dorsey. What else is developing with the team. Is Dennis Schroder the point guard of the future? The Mavericks have a significantly worse record than their point differential and net rating would suggest. What’s going on with that? Also, are they invested in Yogi beyond this season? The Bulls got harshly criticized this past offseason. What are the chances they actually might have landed the best player in the 2017 NBA draft? The Kings have been the usual mess for the better part of their season. But they’ve not been so bad as of recent. What to we make of their young players in the context of this roster and this season? We explain that it comes down to who is playing at the power forward and center positions and what they are asking their perimeter defenders to do. Have they sacrificed too much on offense to achieve what they are doing on defense? We discuss. The Nuggets are 29th in defensive rating but held the Warriors to 81 points in their matchup this week. What should we make of that? The Pacers might have won more games that some predicted they would on the entire season. We were optimistic about them prior to the season; but how sustainable is this? We still see roster construction issues for them at this point but a second round draft pick could solve a lot of that and it’s a player no one is talking about. Well, we talk about him on this episode. The Hawks are bad. But John Collins has been good. Taurean Prince is showing flashes of growth on offense. Dennis Schroder has been terrible on defense. Can a coach hold a team accountable on defense if their best offensive player is not putting in the effort on the defensive end of the court? We discuss. And who got our awards this week? Listen and find out. Greg cheated again but it’s not a terrible take. All of this and more.Follow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastFollow us on FaceBook: @fullcourtpressnbaLearn more about your ad choices. We continue our in-season analysis. This week we wanted to see why the Jazz were playing so well, especially on offense. Well Utah did not get many wins this week but we came away impressed anyway. Why? Did you know they have the 4th best offensive rating in the NBA since November 15? Now you do. Listen to hear more about that. Are the Thunder as dysfunctional as the look? Yes? Is there hope? For sure. Might they need to make a coaching change? We discussed this. Are the Rockets doing sustainable things? Are they really a top 5 team on both ends of the court? We discuss this. The Bucks are 11-4 since the Bledsoe trade. Have they arrived? Most certainly not, they can get better and the rest of the league should be terrified of that possibility. Have we been too hard on Jason Kidd? We talk about why that might be the case. All of this and more.Follow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastFollow us on FaceBook: @fullcourtpressnbaLearn more about your ad choices. Full Court Press NBA Podcast Episode 44 – Team Updates for 76ers Cavaliers Wizards CelticsWe continue our in-season analysis. This week we tried to assess whether the 76ers are a viable 50-win team. They had played an interesting schedule and come out largely successful. They are an incredibly productive team but one that still makes a lot of mistakes. What are those mistakes? Are they correctable this season? Might they look to add another veteran player or two to make themselves a more serious playoff team? Whether they do or don’t we think nobody is going to want to encounter them in any round of the playoffs. Why? The Cavaliers are on a double-digit game winning streak. Is everything fine in Cleveland now? The answer is NO, why? The Wizards are trying to maintain contact with the top 4-5 teams in the Eastern Conference while they await the return of John Wall. How are they doing? The criticized roster depth has not been an issue of recent and has actually been award worthy. Is that issue fixed? The answer is NO. Why? And the Celtics are so boringly good now, already? And without Gordon Heyward? They put in the work and get the results. But is this the roster they want to have when April arrives? The answer in NO. Why?All of this and more.Follow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastFollow us on FaceBook: @fullcourtpressnbaLearn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Full Court Press NBA Podcast Episode 43 – Team Updates for Timberwolves Pistons Magic HeatWe continue our in-season analysis. We are adjusting to providing updates on four teams per episode as opposed to eight teams as to get back to providing as much depth as we did in the season previews. We saw the Timberwolves play live four times this week so we go in depth on where they are as a team. Why do we feel they are not currently playing as well as their record would suggest? What is going on with them in the fourth quarter? How is Jimmy Butler making an impact? Per point differential and net rating the Pistons should not be as good as their record suggests either? Why do we feel more encouraged about them? The Magic are off track. Why? And is there anything they can do as to try to get back on track? The Heat are trending in a good direction. Why do we feel like they are heading toward a 5th seed or better in the Eastern Conference? All of this and more.Follow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastFollow us on FaceBook: @fullcourtpressnba Learn more about your ad choices.
