In episode #1129, we discuss an advanced SEO hack that gets you results in less than 30 minutes.  Tune in to hear the SEO hacks you should be implementing now. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:25] Today’s topic: An SEO hack that gets results in under 30 minutes. [00:31] The hack is the Frequently Asked Questions page schema. [00:38] When you do a Google search, you’ll see suggestions of ‘People also search for’ topics.  [00:54] If you create an SEO schema on your website’s Frequently Asked Questions page, you’ll take up more real estate on the Google search results page and you will see an increase in click-throughs. [01:12] When Neil did it, his click-through rate doubled, which is the average increase people see with this trick. [01:25] Rand Fishkin talked about how zero-click searches have surpassed organic clicks, so you have to try to win clicks once users reach the search results page. [01:53] Neil argues that you don’t want to manipulate Google results because that will hurt you in the long run. [02:00] Think long-term and think about what’s best for the user. [02:05] As more sites do this, Google will choose the best content to put on its search results, so it won’t benefit you to simply self-promote. In episode #1128, we discuss whether TikTok is the next big thing.  Tune in to hear if you should be investing in this social platform. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:25] Today’s topic is whether TikTok is the next big thing. [00:30] TikTok is a social network that’s very popular in Asia and is climbing in the rankings on App Annie, which does metrics on revenue and other stats. [00:50] TikTok is on its way to making over $100 million and their valuation is in the billions of dollars. [01:00] The app does short videos, and people are creating funny content including music videos. [01:20] Their typical user drops off after 30 days, which is a problem. [01:34] One of the biggest Chinese tech conglomerates owns it and has put over $1 billion into it. [01:49] Platforms that aren’t sticky and aren’t retaining users tend to end up as fads. [01:56] Neil points out that marketers are always wondering if they should adopt the newest social media platform for their business. [02:05] It’s probably only worth the time and effort if a platform has continued to prove its popularity. [02:25] Even if your business isn’t using Instagram yet, it’s not too late because you don’t have to be the first to adopt a social media platform. [02:40] You should wait to leverage a platform until it hits the mainstream and you know it will work for you, and TikTok is not at that level yet. [02:56] Their user count is growing but they don’t have the reach that Facebook has. [03:03] With poor user retention, TikTok’s user count will probably stagnate and then start to drop. [03:30] Neil and Eric don’t think TikTok is the next big thing, but maybe it could be bigger one day. [03:38] A great social media network to leverage right now is WhatsApp. [03:49] That’s it for today! [00:40] Around 2012, one of Neil’s partners coined the term, “growth hacking”. [01:49] Growth hacking isn’t dead, but Neil doesn’t care for the term. [02:20] We’ve both been called growth hackers, but we prefer to be called marketers. [02:55] Evolve your skills as a marketer. Think about long-term growth. In episode #1124, we discuss when you should start using a new social network. Tune in to hear when you should leverage a trending new social network. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:25] Today’s Topic: The Right Time to Jump into a New Social Network [00:34] TikTok is a new social network that has taken off. [00:45] It’s easier if you’re an early adopter, but if you have the money, wait for the new site to establish itself. [01:15] Just because Snapchat is popular, doesn’t mean you can go in there and figure out how to monetize. [02:35] Neil’s rule of thumb is that if a social network has less than $1 billion market cap, he doesn’t pay attention to them. [02:50] Social networks are based off of user growth, not actual value. [03:15] If the network is growing and they are being talked about, look into it. [03:45] TikTok’s current revenue is well into the millions. [03:47] That’s it for today! [01:01] Try responding to comments that you receive and engage followers. [02:12] This strategy doesn’t work as well as it used to, because algorithms detect if you’re outright asking for comments. [02:36] Play to the specific platform on which you are posting. [02:57] Live is a priority right now on LinkedIn. [03:25] Email blasts used to help boost engagements, but it isn’t working as well as it once did. [03:55] You need native engagements on social platforms. [04:18] That’s it for today! [02:38] Neil is big on doing one thing and one thing only. [03:05] Eric likes to diversify more often. [05:25] Neil has a hiring philosophy, wherein he likes to hire people with a certain type and amount of experience. [07:00] At one point, Eric sold his home to float his business. [08:36] Neither of us is right or wrong, we just have different approaches to running a business. [09:22] The older we get, the more stuck in our ways we will be. [01:05] It’s a method that worked, until it didn’t. [01:22] We agree on most things. [01:30] Eric goes live more than Neil does. [01:40] Neil has gotten better results when he focuses on big channels and big wins. [01:55] Eric is better at splitting his focus. [03:10] In general, Neil is quicker to execute things. [01:18] Eric doesn’t think you can make a living using Patreon, so it’s not worth it. [01:34] When starting a podcast, you have to be patient, because you won’t get traction right away. [02:30] It takes time to compound your audience. In episode #1109, we discuss how you should structure your pricing plan. Tune in to hear how you should charge your customers. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:25] Today’s Topic: Your Pricing Plan [00:30] Should you charge hourly, monthly, or annually? [00:35] When you trade hours for dollars, you cannot scale. [02:04] You just need steady income, so make sure there is a contract for at least a year, no matter how you bill. [03:05] Monthly is fine, but yearly is ideal. [03:15] If you can’t get customers to commit to a year, get them to commit to less time, but not month by month. [03:40] Neil has made money by charging an hourly rate, so it’s not a complete fail. [00:45] “Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity.” [01:45] Financial advisors take a cut of what you make. [02:05] You want pre-tax growth, because you want to spend your money before taxes. [03:11] The best way to look at it is: If something works for you, go all in on that tactic. [04:30] Neil used to do some angel investing, but it has slowed down. [04:43] He has been investing in venture funds. [05:25] You can get a great return on investing in venture funds. [05:41] The best kind of growth is investing in yourself. [02:33] In India, the groups are very costly. [03:10] Spending $10,000/year is worth it to Eric, because Masterminds helped save his business. [03:40] If it doesn’t work out, you probably picked the wrong Mastermind. [04:14] Ideally, other group members should be on your level or higher. [08:26] Surround yourself with “doers”. [09:12] Don’t hire assholes. [10:02] Disney used to test people before the interview even began. [13:15] Nextiva launches products fairly often. [13:30] People don’t often leverage a LinkedIn takeover: simple video posts from your whole team on the same day. [14:45] Gaetano DiNardi has mastered the art of engaging, viral posts. [15:40] Monthly, Nextiva spends half a million dollars on Ad Words. [16:11] Yaniv encourages the use of exit pop-ups. [19:33] The top complaint most employees have is poor communication. [20:01] So, Nextiva set out to fix that problem. [20:46] They realized people hate emails and reading, so they created a weekly video update. [23:24] The best part of Nextiva’s landing pages are reviews of the company being compared to their competitors. [24:22] Cameo is the best new tool that Yaniv has added to his workflow. [28:32] Yaniv does all his work on his iPad Pro. [30:20] Yaniv gets better at marketing by surrounding himself with other smart marketers. [01:12] Paid media is getting more and more expensive. [01:27] If the costs go up, eventually, the ROI and costs will break even. [02:15] It doesn’t matter how the market is doing, people will keep going if there will be profitability down the line. [02:45] What are the most important metrics or KPI’s when it comes to marketing? [03:41] If you can build up a big enough brand, you can create demand with consumers. [04:45] What is Eric playing right now? [04:47] Eric is playing Fortnite and often plays Smash Brothers with his team. [05:10] Segment is encroaching on Hull’s space, but Hull still does it better. [05:45] Is there any other service besides HubSpot? [05:56] There are ways to fill in the gaps, but there aren’t many tools to compete with HubSpot. [06:15] If you tell a company what isn’t working, they will often work to improve their product or service. [06:45] Voice search is going to continue to grow. [07:25] No one has created a way for a consumer to ask a question and make a purchase.  [08:49] That’s it for today! [08:57] We are going to take applications for live intensive sessions. [01:30] When you’ve created something really good to which it is worth being linked, people will reach out and help you. [02:12] Whatever industry you’re in, there are tools there to help you. [02:50] What is the endgame for Eric and Neil?  [03:00] What is the impact of digital marketing 20 years down the road? [03:30] Neil doesn’t quite have an endgame in mind, but he does have simple goals about spending time with family. [04:05] Neil doesn’t feel that he needs to make a lot of money. [06:22] Eric is happy with his position in life, as well. [06:45] In a few years, Neil believes the majority of ads you will see will be interconnected with your smart devices. [07:40] Your smart kitchen appliances could potentially make recommendations. [08:20] Social tools are no longer seen as utilities and the government may try to take over, because social media can influence elections. [08:47] That’s it for today! Tune in to hear us discuss whether SEO is different across the globe, if books are good marketing tools, and so much more! TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:52] Today’s Topic: Marketing School Live Q & A Part III [01:03] Are SEO techniques different in different countries? [01:10] Sometimes Google will make changes in major markets first, but eventually it’s all the same everywhere. [01:50] Are books good marketing and branding tools? [02:00] The economics of publishing weren’t great for Neil. [03:00] Neil felt his publisher was unecessarily pushy. [04:02] Eric had a different goal than Neil did, when publishing his book. [04:25] Being able to leverage an audience is a powerful outcome. [05:20] The site Muscle for Life does well, because the site’s creator published kindle books and only pays for advertising on Amazon. [07:05] Why do Eric and Neil like Intercom best? [07:20] Intercom has greater functionality than MobileMonkey and ManyChat. [08:25] The biggest threat to the agency model is automation. [09:15] Incentive models are misaligned. [09:30] When they pay for performance, the incentives are much more aligned. [10:29] That’s it for today! [10:37] We are going to take applications for live intensive sessions. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:54] Today’s Topic: Marketing School Live Q & A Part II [01:50] What are good tips for putting together a Mastermind group? [02:10] What is your motivation for putting together a group in the first place? [03:15] Eric’s group meets every six months. [03:30] Before that, he had monthly dinners, but he didn’t curate the attendees as well as he should have. [03:54] Look at this template for Mastermind groups: Mastermind Talks. [04:25] You want to facilitate a bond between members. [04:55] You can always join a Mastermind, but creating your own can prove useful if you have your own business thesis. [05:25] Try to create a group where you surround yourself with people you would want to see all the time. [05:58] Neil found this was better, because meetings weren’t as conducive as frequent check-in’s were. [06:40] Hanging out with like-minded people will help you achieve your goals. [07:45] A lot of Neil’s friends aren’t in his industry, but they are similarly driven. [08:40] That’s it for today! [08:55] We are going to take applications for live intensive sessions. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:54] Today’s Topic: The Future of Digital Marketing According to Neil Patel [01:30] When you work with companies of all sizes, you notice trends and patterns in the industry. [02:40] I see every single side of marketing. [03:20] There are at least a billion blogs on the Internet. [03:30] Do we honestly need this many blogs? [04:15] All companies are leveraging digital marketing. [06:22] We are all worried about another recession. [06:32] However, during the last recession, Google’s revenue went up. [07:32] Marketing is going omni-channel. [07:47] Google has the majority of the revenue, with Facebook a close second. [10:06] In general, social shares are declining. [10:25] Google doesn’t penalize for duplicate content. [12:25] If you don’t keep updating your content, you won’t maintain your rankings. [14:11] Conversion rate optimization is not sexy, but it’s effective. [14:35] It’s the smallest investment with the biggest ROI. [17:09] There are so many tools to use to compare your competitors stats with your own. [19:45] Growing traffic used to be a manual process, but can easily be automated using Clickflow. [24:05] Uber and Dropbox came in with so much hype, but when they went public, their stocks didn’t do as well. [24:40] For visibility and omni-channel marketing, always use the Rule of Seven. [27:01] Email and push notifications are still a great way to market. [30:00] The more you focus on conversions, the better off you will be. [30:14] Conventional CRO tactics won’t work anymore. [32:55] Personalized messaging is a great tactic. [33:12] Chat is responsible for 28% of Neil’s sales. [36:15] Anything you do in marketing and business should be researched and tested. [37:12] That’s it for today! [37:26] We are going to take applications for live intensive sessions. Just go to the Marketing School site for more information and to apply. [10:00] An internal success gap is what your product does and what the user thinks it should do. In episode #1081, we offer a free listen to Larry Kim’s presentation from the Marketing School Live event in Los Angeles. Tune in to hear Larry discuss his hacks for Facebook marketing for 2020 and beyond. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:55] Today’s Topic: Larry Kim’s Top 5 Favorite Facebook Marketing Hacks for 2020 and Beyond [02:15] Larry is from Winnipeg and he’s obsessed with unicorns. [02:47] Larry started WordStream in 2008 out of a bakery he frequented. [03:00] Now the company employs over 300 people managing over $1 Billion in ad spend. [03:20] He sold the business one year ago. [04:22] Facebook is getting in trouble for questionable live streams and censorship. [04:55] The future of Facebook is private groups and messaging. [06:22] Live chats are a core growth marketing area on which to focus.  [08:40] Anything you can do with email marketing,  you can do with messaging. [11:35] Use a chatbot builder like MobileMonkey. [12:45] Surveys are a great way to get user feedback and you can do them using chatbots, so they are more conversational. [15:10] This helps improve conversions. [17:25] In order to improve experiences, you would want to create content around questions people have. [19:11] By making a person confirm that he is doing well in a conversation, you can use that to piggy-back upon and move onto the topic at hand. [19:47] No matter what you’re selling, try to take people on a conversational journey. [22:30] It’s never been easier to grow your email subscriber list. [23:20] Don’t wait for people to message, you have to be more proactive in getting leads. [23:40] A Comment Guard is a strategy for baiting users into messaging your company. [25:05] Another way to engage your audience is to ask an enticing question and offer the actual answer and further information. [28:12] Larry has changed the way he does Facebook ads, so that it sends people into his messenger funnels instead of a landing page. [30:44] After someone becomes a Messenger contact, you can input their info into a Drip campaign and attempt to use upsells. [31:15] You can also remarket people based on conversational criteria. [33:14] There are more daily active users on messaging platforms than on social media, yet less than 1% of companies have the ability to market to those users. [33:27] Engagements rates are 100x better than email marketing. [34:45] That’s it for today! [34:48] Please go to Marketing School for a free copy of Larry’s slides. In episode #1080, we debate whether you should charge for a conference. Tune in to hear where each of us stands on this issue. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:27] Today’s Topic: Should You Charge For A Conference? Neil & Eric Debate [00:51] As the day proceeded, Eric realized they could have charged for the event. [01:10] When your content is already free for the most part, it would have been more than fair to charge for the conference. [01:30] Also, charging would have guaranteed a higher attendance rate with higher quality attendees. [02:52] Neil disagrees with Eric’s assessment.  [03:10] Neil prefers to give away information for free. [03:35] Luckily, Intercom and others served as sponsors, which helped offset the costs. [03:51] Neil doesn’t want to make money off of people who are just seeking knowledge. [04:22] Eric thinks it put way too much stress on him and his team and another free event wouldn’t be worth it. [04:45] We are providing value and those surveyed said they would pay for another event. [05:30] Neil feels he didn’t work as much for this event, so he understands Eric’s perspective. [05:50] Tweet at Eric to give us your thoughts! [06:50] That’s it for today! [07:00] We are going to take applications for live intensive sessions. [00:50] We had a couple of last-minute hiccups, because there was a lot of miscommunication. [01:30] Another mistake was that the food was amazing, but there were no vegetarian options. [01:57] We didn’t have an emcee.  [02:45] Not charging for tickets hurt us a little bit. [03:00] There wasn’t an easy way to digest and download all the information we shared. [04:22] Eric underestimated the amount of work it would take to get butts in seats. [04:38] Neil thinks that even though people say they are going to come, not everyone actually shows up. [04:54] Last minute, they had a bunch of open seats that they needed to fill. [05:21] That’s it for today! [05:28] We are going to take applications for live intensive sessions. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:27] Today’s Topic: How to Make Sense of Traffic Estimates From SEO Tools [00:38] Examples of such tools include: UberSuggest and SEMRush. [01:20] When it comes to these tools, it’s hard to compare them. [01:35] You should use these tools to see how you stack up to your competitors.  [01:50] Always use the same tool for comparisons, so that the data will be similar.[02:50] When looking at these types of tools, Eric looks at trends. [03:30] If Eric sees the traffic value declining, he knows it’s not something worth emulating. [04:40] B2C traffic information tends to be more accurate. [00:50] It was a core update and people lost a lot of keyword rankings. [01:30] Eric found that even though he lost keywords, the keywords for which they already ranked, got better. [02:40] There’s no clear trend, as it seems like a wash. [03:05] Look at the sites and pages that are ranking in the top ten and learn from what they are doing.
