This podcast looks into the minds of cutting-edge and innovative doctors. You won't find these stories in any medical textbook. You're getting real, live insight from men and women pushing the envelope beyond medicine.
What’s good everyone!! When I started Docs Outside the Box, I wanted to expose listeners to doctors thriving in non-traditional career paths. Just listening to episodes, might not be enough. I am learning that mindset plays a big part in our ability to take action, and also have positive energy in our lives. The fixed mindset keeps us from removing ourselves from toxic work environments, starting a podcast, or even taking a chance on a side-hustle we might be passionate about. I want to start introducing topics around mindset and habit – building into the regular schedule of this show. Nate Klemp, PhD, is an expert in this field and jumps on this show to talk about his NY Times Best-Selling book, Start Here: Master the Lifelong Habit of Wellbeing. This book is about learning that the same way we train our body for fitness, is the same way you can train your brain for wellness! The book is based on the Life Cross Training System that is currently being used by healthcare systems to help physicians battle burnout and obtain peak performance. Things you’ll learn on this episode: Dangers of the “grind it out” mentality in health care The benefits of meditation What is gratitude How to manage attention and tension Follow Nate Klemp: LinkedIn LIFE XT on LinkedIn Twitter Don’t forget to join the community of DOTB Nation at: docsotbnation.com Check out our great sponsors: Physician CEO Set For Life Insurance
What’s good everyone!! Dr. Mark Shapiro, Host of Explore The Space podcast, jumps on the hot-seat to talk about where the hell physicians fit in the current landscape of healthcare. Are we still in the center, or are we stuck riding the bench while the MBAs make all the decisions? Who knows?! We get real, raw, and even bring up uncomfortable topics not generally talked about. If you’re looking for a show where physicians, academics, journalists are talking about healthcare – then Explore The Space is the show for you. I’m a fan of Dr. Mark’s show and recommend that you put it on your playlist. Resources: Dr. Mona Hanna-Atisha Extreme Ownership Crucial Conversations Redefining Perfection
What’s good everyone! Welcome to a new series called “The Come-Up.” In previous episodes, I’ve mentioned that it can difficult to identify with a successful person’s journey, especially if they’re on Step 1000 (i.e. Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos). If you got a chance to listen or even talk to someone who is on Step 5 would that make a difference in your life? I think so – I would find it really inspiring to see successful people as their “figuring it out.” That’s what this series is all about. Connecting you docs who are “figuring out” their life as a doc outside the box right in front of our eyes. These episodes are meant to be raw, emotional, cool AF and uplifting. The best part is – you can be apart of this conversation. I’m featuring listeners who will allow us to follow them through their journey, and be open to coaching. Our first guest is Dr. Nana Korsah, a former Nephrologist who has recovered from burnout, and now is a locum Hospitalist. She has a side gig as a life and financial coach for physicians who want to both pay off debt and live their life to the fullest. This Friday, Drs Nii & Renee answer questions related to travel locum work, family and marriage. Specifically, how to handle traveling for locums work while spouse is undergoing in-vitro fertilization. Also, how do you remain “present” in family life while traveling for up to two weeks out of the month? You’ll hear an update on how Dr. Renee is handling maternity leave. Plus we’re sharing a review from a listener.
What’s good everyone! Today you’re going to hear from Dr. Peter Valenzuela – the creative mind behind the comic strip Doc Related.” Doc Related is a comic strip with a satirical take on healthcare through the eyes of healthcare professionals. Think of Dilbert and the television show, The Office but for healthcare. You’ve probably seen his comic strips on numerous physician Facebook groups. Not only is he a creative, he’s also made the transition into hospital administration and serves as a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of a large physician group in California. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of corporate medicine, but Peter gives us a direct look into the life of a physician who serves as a CMO. Honestly, he has changed my perspective with this interview. For the residents and young attendings out there, this is an episode you don’t want to miss if you’re interested in what life is life in the Corporate Suite (C-suite). What’s good everyone! What is the use of knowing that “everything is negotiable” if you lack both the skills and confidence? Negotiation expert and host of the popular podcast Negotiate Anything, Kwame Christian, chops it up with me on today’s episode. Kwame is a business lawyer and the Director of the American Negotiation Institute. In this role, he conducts live negotiation and conflict resolution training sessions for organizations. We’re talking about the basics of negotiation in a way that you’ll find USEFUL. We go through scenarios that graduating residents will find themselves in with hospitals. Kwame gets surgical with this, and you’ll be fascinated by his ability to handle pretty difficulty situations. If you feel like negotiation is your weakness – this episode is for you! What’s good everyone, Much like auto body shops, did you know that hospitals present different prices to individuals compared to insurance companies? You may think, “Yeah of course, hospitals present a more inflated bill to insurance companies!” Well, there’s evidence to show this is not the case. Price gouging and lack of transparency has been a major problem in the healthcare industry for decades. Dr. Marty Makary, author of his new book The Price We Pay, drops in to talk about this and the research he is currently doing to combat this issue. Dr. Makary is a surgeon, New York Times best-selling author, and health care expert. He is also a professor of Health Policy & Management at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. His areas of interest include the health care costs, overtreatment, the opioid epidemic, patient safety and the movement to make healthcare more transparent. What’s good everyone, I am very happy as a physician. But I’m not going to lie, there are things that people who are not doctors get to do that make me pretty jealous. One of them is the ability to have a career pivot. So many of my college friends have changed careers and sometimes I wonder “Could that be me?” My next guest is definitely not afraid to both ask that question and take action on it. Dr. Lynn Morski from the Quit Happens podcast joins me on this show to discuss how quitting strategically can be the pathway to a more fulfilled life. That’s right she’s a “Quitting Evangelist,” and she’s very honest about her pathway that has taken her through the tech industry, medicine, and also law. Things you’ll learn in this episode: Why many avoid quitting How to make your resume/CV look good with multiple experiences in quitting How she helps doctors get over the stigma of quitting How she became a quitting evangelist She takes us through the steps of quitting strategically as physicians How she answers #imnotjustadoc Resources: Oura Ring Book: Quitting by Design Lear more about Dr. Morski: https://quittingbydesign.com/
What’s good everyone… My apologies for the short break in the beginning of the month. Check out the beginning of this episode to find out what happened. On this episode, I’m chopping it up with Dr. Cedric Dark, the Founder and Executive Editor of Policy Prescriptions. Think of Policy Prescriptions as a cliff notes version of health policy research so that lawmakers can make bills based off actual evidence-based studies. Now at this for well over 10 years, Dr. Dark got his start while interning in Washington, D.C. and learning how much policymakers relied on politics and ideology. Not only will you learn more about Cedric, but you’ll also get a civics lesson on exactly how health policy bills on funded on a federal level. For those who want to get more on the front lines of advocacy, especially with social media – this episode is for you! Things you’ll learn in this episode: How he developed in interest in Emergency Medicine What people in Washington, D.C. think about physicians His advice for clinicians looking to get into public advocacy How he answers #imnotjustadoc Resources mentioned in this episode: Policy Prescriptions Mazie Foundation The Oregon Health Insurance Experiment Follow Dr. Dark: Twitter: @realcedricdark or @policyrx
What’s good! Things get real for me on this episode. I’m in the hotseat as Dr. Renee interviews the “Doc Outside the Box.” Starting late last year, I doubled down on clinical work. This included late hours, additional travel, and time away from my family. The show went on in terms of the podcast, but there have been potholes along the way. We’re going to cover everything from my decision to work more all to the opportunity costs I incurred due to that decision. Themes covered: I don’t want my career to ruin my life What are opportunity costs Growth vs fixed mindset Worry about what others think Previous episode mention: EP 101 – My wife hates my locums schedule
What’s good! One of the biggest challenges I face with being an entrepreneur is learning how to not be too focused on the minute details of my businesses. This is easier said than done, because, it involves creating systems and automation – things we definitely never learned in medical school. Sheryl (my amazing assistant) is jumping on the mic to share the tools she uses that helps me to scale my business ventures. This is a fun conversation, so listen up and take notes!! What’s up! You have got to be living under a rock to not know about the biggest free agency moves in the NBA this summer. On top of that, this class of free agents are the most talented we’ve seen in years. The elite players of the league have been making power moves and operating in ways to make sure their brand has a legacy. On this episode, Dr. Renee Darko and Kwesi Asamoah join me to discuss the money and branding plays of these NBA free agents!
What’s good!! We’re hearing from The Crispy Doc on this episode of 5-minute Friday. The Crispy Doc is an anonymous physician personal finance blogger who joined us on Episode 117 to discuss how doctors can reclaim both their time and careers by grabbing control of their finances. On this episode, we’ll find out how he uses one of his biggest weaknesses to get past his fears.
What’s good everyone! Dr. Renee is joining me on this episode. I decided to shake things up a bit and discuss something controversial. Damon “Dame” Dash is an American entrepreneur, record executive, film producer and is best known for co-founding Roc-A-Fella records. For a significant time, he served as Jay-Z’s manager and business partner. Several years ago, Dame Dash came on the popular radio talk show The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 to discuss a new movie. To anyone who isn’t familiar with the talk show, it’s not your typical morning show and if you’re a guest, you definitely can’t prepare for the questions you will face on the show. Let’s just say it turned into a heated talk about employment versus entrepreneurship and other things you should listen to in your home and not at work. On this episode, Dr. Renee and I break down this conversation for you from a doctor’s perspective. There are mad nuggets that Dame drops about employment that we think you all can learn from and we go through each one by one. His thoughts are controversial, but this is Docs Outside the Box - and that’s what we do! What’s good!! We’re hearing from Dr. Nikki Ramskill on this episode of 5 minute Friday. Dr. Nikki, also known as “The Female Money Doctor,” joined us on Episode 115 to discuss why her patients are her target population for her personal finance writings. After listening to that episode, you learned that she did a major about-face and changed medical specialties. Even in the United Kingdom, this is a big deal and she talked about the critiques that came her way. On this episode she’s going to tell us the resources she used to finally make the decision and leave the haters in her rear-view mirror. Resources discussed on this episode: Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway The Chimp Paradox
What’s good everyone! I’m chopping it up with anonymous physician personal finance blogger Crispy Doc. We have similar immigrant and first-generation stories that led us down the path of becoming physicians. Taking safe jobs (i.e. teacher, engineer, physician) was an important way for first-generation children to establish their roots here in the United States. Crispy Doc shares his journey through burnout and how finally grabbing control of his finances got him on the road to fulfillment. On this episode you’ll learn: How to figure out your retirement number How his family background made an impact on his journey through burnout How to shift your mindset with investing and take control of it His personalized advice to me on how I can get on that path to Financial Indepence How he answers #imnotjustadoc Resources mentioned in this episode: Docs Who Cut Back Jordan Craig, MD The value of a Financial Advisor
What’s good everyone! My next guest is Dr. Nikki Ramskill – the personality behind the blog “The Female Money Doctor.” There aren’t as many physicians in the United Kingdom blogging about personal finance as in America, but her claim to fame is being the “first ever doctor in the UK to be blogging about money.” The blog has become popular in the UK and focuses on the money stresses that her patients suffer from. She comes off as relatable as she shares her journey through student loan debt, investing, and breaking the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck. On this episode, we’re going to learn more about the woman behind the blog. For example, what’s her personal approach to debt, and the mindset changes it took for her to change specialties from OB/GYN to being a General Practitioner. On this episode, I get to chat with a physician who’s splitting his time between expeditions in Antarctica and on the motorcycle race track. My next guest, Dr. Nicholas Steinour, is an Emergency Medicine physician currently practicing in Austin, Texas. Dr. Steinour’s mantra is “enjoy things that make you fully present in life,” and without a doubt, he is living a life outside the box. You’re going to hear about how he’s become part of a team of physicians that provide medical support to expeditions in the South Pole. We’re talking about caring for seal bites, sea sickness, and of course hypothermia. He’s also combined his childhood passion for motorcycles with medicine and provides medical care to various racing circuits that are in Texas. On this episode we have Dr. Shilpi Agarwal, author of the book called The 10-Day Total Body Transformation: A Doctor's Guide to Getting Leaner, Cleaner, and Happier in Just 10 Days! It is a guide that cuts through all the gimmicks, fad diets to give you easy to understand concepts and a 10-day simple plan to achieve the path to the lifestyle you are looking for! I read this book and it hit home on building healthy habits instead of focusing on doing the next exercise craze! I recommend this book for anyone who has difficulty with understanding how nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness work together. The best part of all - you won’t be bored by this book. Dr. Shilpi has a down-to-earth approach that makes it easy to relate to. Not only are we talking about her book, but Dr. Shilpi is also a regular contributor on Fox 5 in Washington, D.C. as well as numerous national media outlets. She hosts a daily live show on Instagram and FaceBook called “Ask The Budgetologist,” where she’s giving advice on money, business, and life. Phylecia has made a name for herself as a sought-after motivational speaker, but now she also coaches others on solidifying their brand through speaking opportunities. What’s good everyone! On this episode, Dr. Bonnie Mason (previously from Episode 18) joins me on how to properly handle difficult non-clinical situations. We’re talking about how to leave without burning bridges even though you absolutely hate your toxic job. By now, it’s pretty standard knowledge to have a lawyer review your hospital/employee contract. Dr. Bonnie has a hot take on whether you should allow your lawyer to take the extra step and negotiate on your behalf. You’ve heard of non-disclosure agreements (NDA), right? Okay, well have you heard of non-disparaging agreements?! Yup, they exist and I was shocked to hear about them also. This is an episode for everyone, whether you’re still a resident or a fresh new attending; there’s plenty of bombs being dropped by Dr. Bonnie. It’s been three years since Docs Outside the Box debuted on the podcast scene. It went very fast and I have learned a lot during this time. Check out Episode 100 for the lessons learned during this journey. On this episode, we have former anonymous physician personal finance blogger - The Physician Philosopher. Like so many of his blogging counterparts, Dr. Jimmy Turner initially started out anonymous, but as of this year, he revealed his secret identity and hasn’t looked back since. I brought him on the show to discuss his philosophy towards personal finance. I’ve enjoyed his approach, which focuses on the WHY behind our personal finance decisions. We often learn more from our mistakes than our wins, and Dr. Jimmy is not different. It seems he’s very comfortable discussing how his past mistakes has set him up for big wins now and in the future.
