Matt and Eric are joined by the newest member of the Talking Chop masthead to jump into the fray on the minor league side in Doc Herbert (co-host of the Platinum Sombrero podcast....make sure you subscribe to that podcast for even more Braves minor league goodness). Rather than going through a complete rundown of the who is on the Talking Chop Top 30 (which is pretty easy to find and read for oneself), consider this podcast a shorter companion piece where we talk about the difficulties in compiling our individual lists, the surprises that came out in the final product, and what changes we expect we may be making by midseason. This week we dive deep into some listener questions, and the subject of draft strategy was of particular interest. Whether a review of prior drafting tactics, recent draftees, or future targets the discussion was quite interesting as Eric, Matt and Garrett host the day. Ian Anderson was a major topic of discussion as well, as the viability of his arsenal was called up for debate. So give us a listen as we take on another mailbag show on Road To Atlanta. We are BACK, welcome to the return of the Road To Atlanta podcast. We had to go a man down with Gaurav out this week, but our fearless host Eric Cole rallied the troops and Matt and Garrett joined him for a discussion of the minor leagues. With the recent Rule 5 draft there was plenty of things to talk about, with 40 man roster additions and a couple of minor league selections going down for the Braves. We also said goodbye to a few long time Braves prospects who may be leaving us in free agency and where they may find themselves in the coming season. The biggest news in the minor league circuit was the proposed contraction of 42 minor league teams, and we had a lengthy discussion about our concerns, minor league salaries, and the impact this could have on minor leagues players for the future. After more than a week of relative silence from the Atlanta Braves, the Talking Chop Podcast came together for a nice, quiet mailbag episode on Sunday. Within 24 hours, chaos returned and, on Wednesday, the Braves made another big splash in committing an eight-figure salary to Cole Hamels for the 2020 season. With that as the backdrop, Episode 199 is here Breaking down the decision to sign Hamels to a lucrative, but short contract How does the veteran left-hander compare to other options and what can fans expect for 2020? What about the payroll now? What happens to Josh Donaldson? In this week’s episode, with Gaurav and Garrett unavailable, Matt and Eric have to go it alone to mourn the end of the minor league season together. It wasn’t all bad feelings though as we discussed the Stripers’ playoff run, September callups (or lack thereof), and what we are looking forward to with the upcoming AFL season since it is starting quite soon. In this week's episode of Road to Atlanta, Garrett and Eric first talk about their recent visits to Rome and which prospects impressed them the most. Spoilers: Michael Harris, Greg Cullen, and Bryce Ball featured prominently in that discussion. After that, everyone talked about their initial impressions of the Braves' representatives in the Arizona Fall League coming up this fall which includes some outfield prospects we are continually intrigued by. After that, we take lots of listener questions from topics such as the future of right field in Atlanta, Nolan Kingham's ceiling, and how the performance of some of the guys in the lower levels of the minors effects the tradeability of guys like Drew Waters and Cristian Pache (it doesn't). In this week's episode of Road to Atlanta, we start off by welcoming Gaurav back into the fold (fear not, Garrett will be back soon as well) and first talk about the recent promotions of Bryce Ball and Michael Harris to Rome. In short, Ball's promotion was overdue and Harris' promotion was a pleasant surprise although we aren't expecting huge things this year (his time will come). After that, Matt talks about his recent trips to see Gwinnett in action to see how Ian Anderson, Tucker Davidson, Cristian Pache, and Drew Waters are looking in Triple-A. We then answered listener questions about the Braves' current shortstop problem, the depth of the minor league system in the coming years, Freddy Tarnok's development, and what we expect for the Braves' outfield in the near future. In this week's episode of Road to Atlanta, we had a shorter episode than usual as we had Matt on location watching a minor league game and we didn't want to tempt the audio/connection gods too much (apologies in advance if the audio isn't quite as good as usual). First things first, our own Garrett Spain re-joined the podcast to give us a hand (he is going to be back on frequently in the future) to talk some prospects. The big news of the week we discussed was the promotions of several of the Braves' top prospects including Cristian Pache, Drew Waters, Ian Anderson, and Tucker Davidson. After that, we talked a bit about some of the Braves minor leaguers who have been among the top performers recently. Enjoy! Eric rants a bit about Luiz Gohara and people being designated for assignment as though it was this shocking thing. We are more excited about some of those performances than others. After that, we took a bunch of listener questions and answered them including discussion of Ian Anderson, the Braves' proficiency in developing hitters, as well as our favorite MiLB parks. In this week's episode, we focused solely on the prospect rankings we rolled out this past week over on Talking Chop. From discussing our unanimous top prospect Cristian Pache and how he had separated himself from the pack to discussing why some guys (looking at you, Luiz Gohara) didn't make the list at all, Matt and Eric go in depth into how the list was formulated, some of the harder calls that had to be made, and whether or not there were any surprises once we actually got the list finalized. We also took a few questions from folks over on Twitter to answer to make sure we didn't forget anything super important. In this week's episode of Road to Atlanta, we first look at the Futures Game selections for the Braves. The virtues of Ian Anderson and Cristian Pache are talked about quite a bit as well as cases made for Drew Waters and Kyle Muller because, well, we are greedy and would have loved to see some more Braves. Then, we talk about the status of some injured prospects including Freddy Tarnok, Tristan Beck, Corbin Clouse, CJ Alexander, and Victor Vodnik while mourning the retirement of all-around good dude Derian Cruz. After all of that, each of us talk about a couple of guys that are trending up on our personal rankings as well as some that are trending downward as a little bit of a teaser for our Top 30 Braves Prospects List that will be rolling out on Talking Chop during the All-Star break. In this week's episode of Road to Atlanta, we take a step back and take some listener questions as we wait for short-season ball to get fully underway. We discussed plenty of the Braves top prospects including what the near-term futures are for Drew Waters and Cristian Pache, how the 2018 draft class is doing, updating our outlook on Kolby Allard, and discussing some guys whose outlook has diminished this season (if only temporarily). After that, there were a LOT of questions pertaining to the 2019 draft class and the short-season ball rosters including guys we have our eyes on, who we think could have the longest MLB career, and lots of stuff in-between. In this week's episode of Road to Atlanta, we take a step back from all of the draft talk (we did that a lot in recent weeks and it is a sore subject for some of us....*cough* *cough* Matt *cough) and instead dive back into creating our midseason Braves' minor league All-Star rosters. This thought exercise helps us get a good handle on the top prospects in the system before we start incorporating the 2019 draftees into the mix ahead of our Top 30 Braves prospects list which will be coming out during the MLB All-Star break. It also highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the system....plus it is just fun to talk about prospects and making Dream Teams with them. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. In this week's episode, we touch quickly on the recent promotions of William Contreras and Greyson Jenista to Double-A which look a bit puzzling on the face of it but make a certain amount of sense in others. After that, it is all draft talk as we talk first in generalities about what we thought about the draft which wasn't exactly a glowing endorsement, but we at least understood the strategy (we think) and there are some definite benefits. After that, we look at the picks themselves from the high profile ones in Shea Langeliers and Braden Shewmake as well as the day two and three picks that could really make some noise for the Braves in the future. In this week's episode of Road to Atlanta, we had a really special guest. First, the three of us give you the usual update as to what is going on in the farm system with some of the top performers from the last week or so. Brace yourselves...there is a good bit of Austin Riley in the first segment as well as tidbits on members of the Mississippi rotation, Drew Waters and Cristian Pache, and Trey Harris who has been absolutely raking for Rome. After that, we were fortunate enough to be able to bring Jim Callis from MLB Pipeline on to the show despite his busy schedule (and my pestering him constantly....sorry Jim). Jim talks to us a bit about some of the big position player prospects in the Braves system, gives a ton of insight into the state of power numbers in the minors (in particular in Triple-A) due to the baseballs being used, and then takes a dive with us into what we can expect to see from the 2019 MLB Draft from the Braves at least as an early glance.
