We’re a long ways away from the inception of the bridal shower, when women historically gathered to shower the bride with gifts for her new home.  How you celebrate your shower is entirely up to you, and can go way outside the bounds of tradition - in today's episode, we're giving the old-school bridal shower some creative, modern twists! I realize that in many cases you don’t plan your own shower, so please feel free to forward this episode along to anyone who's helping you with the wedding plans. Let’s talk about the recipe for your perfect wedding, and when you get right down to it - it’s pretty simple. I’ve been guiding engaged couples to planning their dream weddings for 10 years now, and here’s something I hear way too often:  “We’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed about all the little things, and losing sight of the big picture.”  Couples who plan every single last painstaking detail, only to realize that they haven’t even thought about the marriage ceremony itself, or who haven’t had one single NON-WEDDING related conversation with their partner in the past 6 months. I know firsthand how easy to get swept up in feeling like everything on your wedding day has to be PERFECT - the wedding industry has been sending the message that your wedding is the “most important day of your life” for decades.  Well, here’s a little secret - no doubt, your wedding day is exceptionally special, and a day you will cherish for the rest of your life … but you’ll likely have many more “best day ever's” in your future, and spending unnecessary time and stress over perfecting all the little things, while failing to focus on that WHY of your relationship and marriage - is quite simply a recipe for disaster. I know I’ve learned a lot about myself over the past couple of months (if you’re listening in real time, we’re on about week 8 of stay-at-home orders related to the corona virus pandemic.) I’ve also been put on the spot and challenged to strip my life down to the basics.  I know this doesn’t necessarily apply to our hero essential workers who are on the front lines in our hospitals and stores, and delivering supplies to keep everyone’s fridge full, bills paid, and packages arriving - I cannot thank you enough for what you’ve sacrificed over these past few weeks - your service to the community at large is priceless and so appreciated. For those of us who are NOT essential workers, the calendar was abruptly wiped clean, and we were suddenly left with the all holy grail of TIME.  When you’re not rushing around all day every day with “normal” activities, there’s lots of time to think about what really matters, something I know I’ve been doing a lot of lately. If you’ve been a long-time listener of the show, then you’re very familiar my minimalist philosophy of approaching your wedding plans.  In other words, prioritizing and identifying what’s very most important to you, and letting the rest go.  This is my timeless way of guiding couples through their wedding plans, but it feels exceptionally appropriate given our current circumstances. Lots of couples get overly anxious about all the little things throughout their engagement and lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.  You default to thinking that every single little thing needs to be perfect, and spend unnecessary time & stress over things that simply don’t matter.  You forget and / or lose sight of the WHY of your relationship, which is the WHY of the entire wedding!  Instead of stressing out over favors and cakes and color swatches, we need to take a deep breath and re-center our focus on celebrating your marriage - I do.  2 lives becoming one.  That’s it. If you’ve had to postpone or reschedule your wedding in these past couple of months, then you know exactly how quickly all the little things lose meaning - all those months of stressing over this and that detail, and then you’re hit with the crushing truth that your entire wedding has been cancelled.  Maybe you went ahead and made your marriage official, and plan to celebrate later, or maybe you put everything on hold for another year.  Maybe your wedding is in May of 2021 and none of this applies.  Regardless - if you have had to postpone, cancel, reschedule - If only we could rewind just 3 months, what you would give to be able to simply have your loved ones all in one place to witness your marriage, and then to celebrate with good food and drinks.  mmmmmm, that sounds SO GOOD right now! So here we are - what are the essential ingredients of your perfect wedding? Tune in for much more, including a Q&A in the second half of the show! Wedding day fashion for the groom & groomsmen goes way beyond the traditional tuxedo.  Today we're going to explore some of the more casual and creative attire options for anyone who does NOT plan on wearing a flowing white dress to the wedding! When I got married back in 2010, my recollection is that tuxedos were the standard fare.  It feels like men's wedding day fashion has gotten much more relaxed & casual - in a GOOD WAY - over the past few years. Let’s take this opportunity to review some options, pricing & tips to save yourselves time, money and stress in the process of figuring out what the guys should wear on the wedding day. Of course there are a zillion variations and creative spins to what we're discussing, so please feel free to use your imagination to suit (pardon the pun, see what I did there?) your unique situation, personalities & tastes. Today we’re exploring: Traditional tuxedo rental tips, Some pleasantly surprising information on custom suits, And casual, playful menswear alternatives. WOMEN'S SUITS: Talk about a multimillion dollar GAP in the industry - unfortunately, finding women's suit rentals is very difficult.  Some research yielded a few legit options: Women's suits on Etsy https://stitchandtie.com/womens-black-shawl-lapel-tuxedo https://www.hertuxedo.com/ https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/badgley_mischka/gold_sequin_pants And last but certainly not least, a HUGE thank you to GENERATION TUX!  Check these guys out and use promo code "" for 10% off the entire groom’s party. You’re engaged, you’re incredibly excited, and at some point it hits you - you’ve got an entire wedding to plan, have no clue where to begin, and are feeling completely & utterly overwhelmed!   Today on the Wedding Planning Podcast, we’re walking through a Master Wedding Planning Timeline to keep you on-task from engagement, all the way to the wedding day.  Together we're going to break down planning your wedding into bite-sized, manageable pieces, and give you a master timeline of exactly what should happen, and when. You don't need me to tell you that there's A LOT to organize, prep and manage in the months leading up to your wedding.  Most of us listening won't be using a full service wedding planner who handles everything from booking your vendors, to design decisions, contract negotiation, and everything in between. This means that YOU need to morph into a pseudo wedding planner - and that’s where wedding overwhelm typically starts to creep in. The good news is ... that I’ve got your back!    The Wedding Planning Podcast is designed to guide you, step-by-step through your wedding plans.  I’m here to take the guesswork out of hard decisions, shed light on wedding industry secrets, explore time and money-saving alternatives to common solutions, and fill you in on wedding planning blind spots, or things you might never have even thought of until it’s too late.  View PINTEREST SAMPLE TIMELINES here. * * * This week's VAULT Member Bonus is a detailed worksheet for creating YOUR customized wedding planning timeline.  Don't miss out on another week - learn more & become a member today!  www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/vault   A special THANK YOU to today's show sponsors: Check these guys out at Generation Tux and use promo code "WEDPLANNING" for 10% off the entire groom’s party AND a free groom's tux w/ 5 paid party members. Are you in complete FREAKOUT MODE over the corona virus & your upcoming wedding celebration?  Breathe deep, my friend - you're not alone, and you have my support, along with countless other wedding industry professionals. Read the full article, "Planning Your Wedding During Corona Virus" that we discuss in this episode by clicking here. The spread of the corona virus & worldwide measures to contain it has escalated so quickly in the past week that your head is probably spinning.  Between stockpiling groceries & supplies and making remote arrangements at work, engaged couples like you are also hit devastatingly hard with wedding day decisions to make about events scheduled in March, April, and likely into May. You’re likely feeling confused, scared, and stressed out with what to do next, and that is completely normal.   Today we’re joined by Meg Keene, editor of A Practical Wedding, which also happens to be the largest independently held wedding publication in the English language(!!!).  If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend putting A Practical Wedding on your short list of trusted wedding resources.  I’m going to share our conversation from Tuesday, March 17th in just a moment, but want to add a few quick notes before we dive in: First, this is a really frightening and uncertain time, and if you’re completely freaking out - please know that that’s totally normal, and you have my support in addition to the wonderful industry experts that I’ll be sharing with you in the coming weeks & months.   Second, if your wedding is scheduled for March, April, or May, you will need to make some decisions about postponing or altering your celebration - please refer to the full article we discussed here to help you navigate through this difficult and stressful time. Third, if your wedding is scheduled for later this summer or fall, please do not panic.  My personal recommendation is to sit tight until the end of March before making any big dramatic decisions about a wedding date in June or beyond. And lastly, things are happening really quickly with respect to containment measures - please rely on trusted news sources for your information, including your state & municipal officials for details specific to your location.  Learn more about Meg's newest project, Hotline Ring here. Freaking out about the corona virus & your wedding?  You’re not alone.  This is an extremely stressful time for engaged couples like you who have questions on cancelling or possibly rescheduling your wedding due to recent developments in the containment of COVID-19. IF your wedding is scheduled for March or April, you’ve got some really overwhelming decisions to make. Please rely on the wonderful article from our friends at A Practical Wedding linked in this post: www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/corona Is your wedding in May 2020 or later? I wish so very badly that I had a crystal ball and could guarantee that things will be back to normal, but alas, I don’t.  Developments with corona virus and the spread of COVID-19 are unfolding daily, even hourly right now.  There’s sadly no way to tell exactly what things will look like in 2, 3, 4 months from now. I personally think we will have a much clearer picture about containment of the corona virus in the next 2 weeks, and IF YOUR WEDDING IS 2+ MONTHS AWAY, I would sit tight before making any huge, wedding-altering decisions until the end of March. Last note - it’s really important to get your news from fact-based sites, and pay attention to news releases from your state and local officials. That sensational article you see on Facebook might be designed to spark fear and chaos, not necessarily inform you with the facts.  Some reputable news sites that I trust: cdc.gov cnn.com npr.org Stay safe, stay healthy, and if you’re stuck inside with nowhere to go, then take this opportunity to listen to over 50+ free episodes of the Wedding Planning Podcast, available wherever you listen! There’s a really common misunderstanding in "wedding planning world" that doing things yourself is always a good way to save money.  I get it - in some situations, you might have more time than money, and a cheap & easy DIY project makes perfect sense.  I bet if you think back, you can remember a time when "doing it yourself" was NOT the answer.  We have to be careful in drawing the line between a few manageable, simple wedding projects that make perfect sense, and biting off more than you can chew.  Otherwise, you risk finding yourself in a spot of pure overwhelm and chaos months into wedding planning, and I don't wish that upon anyone!!! On today’s show, we’re going to explore 8 red flags to carefully consider when hosting your wedding at a residential property like a backyard or a rental home.  Our conversation today is a perfect lesson in creating boundaries as you plan between what you can realistically handle yourself, what should be left to a paid professional, and how to rearrange your priorities if you're stuck feeling like the cheapest possible DIY route is your only option.  (spoiler alert - it's not!!!) You deserve to enjoy a STRESS-FREE engagement, and to make informed decisions about your wedding with confidence and ease.  Stop spinning your wheels looking for answers on a million blogs, websites, magazines, and in noisy, online chat rooms.  Become a VAULT member today and enjoy complete peace of mind knowing that you’ve got my professional wedding planning support throughout your engagement. *affiliate link* A top-notch handheld steamer like I mentioned in today's show can be found here. Today we’re going to walk through a really FUN exercise - identifying what wedding stuff you want to SPLURGE on, giving you the clarity to put your money where it matters most.   I mean, who doesn’t love a great SPLURGE?  We're also going to discuss "wedding budget shaming", and the notion that what I choose to invest in my wedding experience is none of your business & not for the world of budget wedding planning blogs, social media personalities + thrifty websites to decide.   This is the 4th year I’ve run this show topic and we keep coming back to it because of the wonderful feedback from couples like you about how helpful it is to approach your wedding budget in terms of your top priorities - and also what you value least, and can therefore scale way back on, or maybe even leave out entirely.  So much more to come on that later in the show! We’re talking a lot today about money + priorities, and I open today’s show with a candid conversation about weddings, money, and mindset.  I shared a post from Ramit Sethi a couple of weeks back on IG, and it started a really passionate conversation about the ways in which we discuss spending money on weddings.  Ramit is a New York Times bestselling author & founder of iwillteachyoutoberich.com  and in his original Instagram post he shared this quote: “If you write money and wedding in the same paragraph, somewhere a wedding bat signal gets activated.  Within minutes 11,000 people arrive & tell you they only spent $6 on their wedding at a barn and loved it and weddings are a waste of money and they’d rather spend $ to buy a home.  @ramit on Twitter No matter what, the internet wants to tell you that spending money on your wedding is a waste of money.  To them it doesn’t matter how much money you have saved.  Nope, it doesn’t matter what culture you’re a part of.  Nope, it doesn’t matter what your goals are.  To them it’s simple - spending money on a wedding is BAD.  Even worse, in our puritanical society, it’s a - gasp - WASTE OF MONEY. I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR THIS BS.  If you want to throw a very small wedding, awesome!  On the other hand, if you want to invite hundreds of people and spend a lot on it - great!  As long as you can afford it, do it.  (No you shouldn’t go into debt.  And no, you shouldn’t ignore future costs, such as building your joint savings.  But this nuance seems to be missed by people shouting about the waste of weddings.) @ramit on Instagram I was really intrigued by how much Ramit's words stood out, and felt compelled to share (which I did immediately) and got a ton of responses from couples who have felt the burn of being wedding budget shamed, either directly or indirectly, from family, friends, and various blogs and websites that want to encourage couples to be thrifty (which is also totally fine, much more to come …) Needless to say, I spend a ton of time in “wedding world” throughout the course of researching new shows, interacting with you through emails and messages and comments and such, and the message of SAVING MONEY, SPENDING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE is everywhere - including, quite a bit, on this very podcast.  I followed a bit of a rabbit hole, and found a great article on Ramit’s blog titled “How to Save For Your Wedding”.  He summarizes a point that I keep close to heart as I record these shows to share with you, and I’ll quote Ramit here again from the article: "Despite what society tells you, there’s no right or wrong price for your wedding. You might have a wedding in the high six figures, or you might just have a wedding that ends up costing a couple thousand. Both are perfectly fine. What matters most is that you’re realistic about what you’re going to spend so you know what to save." Tune in for so much more on setting an intentional wedding budget that highlights YOUR priorities through identifying your "splurge" items!

Run a search for "2020 wedding trends", and you’ll get a bunch of results that honestly, sound pretty ridiculous to the average couple.  Tarot card readers at the restrooms, $20,000+ liquor & cigar bar, over-the-top neon lighting installations, 30 foot-long bridal veils that take 6 people to manage.  For most of us?  Not so much. I want you to sidestep these TEN wedding planning blind spots! FULL BLOG POST & links from today's episode available here: www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/blindspot Over the past 4 years of producing the Wedding Planning Podcast, one of my favorite pieces of feedback from you is some variation of, “WOW, I never would have even thought of that!” I love sharing wedding planning ideas and strategies that go beyond what you might find if you simply google something, or browse through a quick article on a wedding website.  Don’t get me wrong, we cover the basics here too - but I LOVE digging down deeper to find the solutions and options that aren’t quite so obvious, and that might offer a really creative way to put a unique spin on your day, make your guests’ experience that much more incredible, or save you a ton of money by simply making a little adjustment or swap. Today we’re going to cover TEN wedding planning “blind spots” - areas that past couples and listeners of the podcast have pointed out as things they wouldn’t necessarily have thought about during their planning, but that became clear after listening to an episode, or in some cases, after their actual wedding was over and done with (and it was too late …) If you’re in the early stages of planning, hopefully we can catch a few things now, so that you don’t find yourself a year or two from now saying, if only we knew then what we know now … Some of the tips from today’s show are very minor, simple pieces of advice while others are a pretty big deal - I’m going to point to a lot of full length episodes that are available to you to download for much more information - I made a blog post with all the show notes so you don’t miss a thing, and you don’t have to be frantically writing down notes while you listen.  You can visit that post at www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/blindspot You have literally millions of options in terms of wedding websites, blogs, magazines, and other podcasts, and I thank you from my whole heart for spending this time with me, and for including me in your wedding planning journey.  It’s a huge honor, and a huge responsibility that I hold with endless respect and gratitude, thank you.  I’ll meet you here again next week, same time, same place!  Cheers!  xo Kara @weddingplanningpodcast Please enjoy these special offers from today's show sponsors! Finding trusted, affordable advice within the wedding industry can be a huge challenge!  Who has time to sift through millions of 3rd class blogs, ad-stuffed magazines, and poor quality DIY videos on YouTube?  Or to navigate huge, impersonal wedding websites full of pop up ads and paid vendor directories, spammy emails, and rude people in chaotic chatrooms??? The Wedding Planning Podcast is here to give you 24/7 access to a complete library of solutions to all the wedding planning topics - everything from announcing your engagement, setting a budget, choosing your wedding party, managing relationship and family conflicts, planning and hosting your rehearsal dinner, your honeymoon, and beyond. Here’s where it gets really fun - in your podcast player, right now, you’ll find a collection of over 75 shows available for you to enjoy, anytime, anywhere your busy life takes you.  I highly encourage you to explore the past episodes and take advantage of the topics you need help on, as they come up through your wedding planning journey.  Share the shows with your loved ones who are helping you plan, with your partner, or even your wedding vendors if you think it would be helpful to them or their other clients! SHOW FORMAT - Every Wednesday, I’ll release a brand new episode for you to enjoy.  Make sure to hit “subscribe” in your podcast player, and the new shows will automatically download for you the second we go live.  I mentioned in the opening that the Wedding Planning Podcast is a show for and about YOU, and your wedding questions are an integral part of creating new episodes.  You can submit questions anytime via email - www.WeddingPlanningPodcast.co/contact or by following along on Instagram @weddingplanningpodcast and sending me a DM.  I have an open door policy, and would absolutely love to hear from you, and learn more about you & your wedding. Due to volume and time constraints, sadly I can’t always get a detailed reply back - but please know that every single one of your submissions is carefully tracked and categorized, and I’ll create new show content based on your FAQ’s and popular topics. If you’re craving a more personalized, hands-on, small group experience, we also have a private membership group available called the Wedding Planning Podcast VAULT. Members of The VAULT enjoy ongoing support in a private discussion group with priority access to wedding Q&A shows that run every other week.  Members can also listen to all past and new episodes AD-FREE, and take advantage of a complete wedding planning roadmap laid out in 12 bonus episodes that guide you through planning your dream wedding, from to start to finish  - just to name a few of the premium and priceless benefits of being a member! Today we’re going to chat about when trying to save money on the wedding can totally BACKFIRE.  Yikes ... right? Aside of college educations, new homes and new cars, your wedding likely has one of the biggest price tags you’ve ever paid.  You’re spending tens of thousands of dollars - of course you’re trying to save money!  You’re not out there researching the most expensive venue in your area, or ways to spend more money on your invitations.  When a potential photographer or caterer gives you a quote for services, you probably don’t say “well that sounds OK, but do you have anything that costs more?” If you've been listening for a while, I hope you know me well enough now to know that I’m NOT the wedding professional who’s going to tell you NEVER to try to cut this corner, or don’t DARE hire a friend to do x, y, z.  I see this type of messaging a lot.  If you do your own wedding day hair and makeup it will totally fail, and you should hire a professional to do it for you.  If you skimp on a photographer, you will regret it for the rest of your life.  If you have your cousin make your cake, it will probably be a complete disaster, you should really hire a professional for that.  If you take your dress to a neighborhood tailor instead of the big box bridal store where you bought it, it’s going to end up in shreds and you’ll have no dress to wear. The trouble is, professional service providers in pretty much any industry have an agenda - to sell their product or service. And whether you hear from a wedding professional on a podcast, read their articles on a blog, or see their posts on Instagram, their position is probably that hiring a professional is THE BEST way to go.  "After all", they say, "this is your wedding - you can’t afford to cut corners on the best day of your life." Well, for lots of this, I call BS.  Sure, if you have a wedding budget in the 6-figures, then “hire a professional” is a great option for everything I just listed.  But most of us DON’T have $100,000 to spend on our wedding, so making swaps and saves here and there is a necessary part of planning so that we don’t go thousands of dollars into debt - NEVER a good idea. Here’s a doozy for you - we hired our wedding photographer off craigslist for $500.  True story.  And I’m NOT here to tell you that it was a horrible idea that backfired and you should never trust any wedding photographer who hasn’t shot 500 weddings and costs less than $5000.  That’s not me, not my style. BUT - and this is a big but - I’m also not here to tell you that YOU should definitely hire a photographer off craigslist, and it will work out perfectly and there’s no risk involved and you can live happy ever after and sleep soundly knowing that you saved a couple thousand dollars! To be clear - there’s no right or wrong, one-size-fits all solution to the myriad of wedding decisions you have to make over the next few months.  I’ll always encourage you to use your intuition, and use our weekly time together to review all the options you have available, and select what feels best for you and your unique situation.  That was a long intro, because I really feel strongly about what we’re talking about today, and I really want to set things up right. The truth is, sometimes no matter how much research you do, or how many great reviews someone has, or how confident you feel that you’re making the right decision, things can just go wrong.  You’ll probably have a wedding backfire, or two, or three over the course of getting everything lined up. This is part of life, and definitely a part of wedding planning.  I wish I could wave a magical wand that would shield you against anything bad happening, but of course - that’s not realistic.  Sooooo, the next best thing to that … Let’s explore some common areas of wedding planning where couples to try to cut a corner, save some money, leave something out, and then sadly have it backfire in terms of lost money, lost time, lost sanity - and sometimes all three. If you find yourselves at a cost-saving opportunity crossroads and you don’t know which way to turn, I have some smart questions to ask yourselves, and potential vendors, that I hope will guide you towards making the best decisions for you and your wedding day.  So when you find yourself wondering, hmmmmm ... should we cut that corner?  What are the potential outcomes or pitfalls that might come of it?  Hopefully after today’s show, you’ll have some solid answers to some of the most common situations, so that you can make the best decision for you. For one wedding, that might mean hiring a photographer off craigslist for $500.  For another couple, that will NEVER be an option that’s on the table.  And you know what?  Both sides are totally fine ;) Full blog post available at www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/wedding-pitfall Please enjoy these special gifts from today's show sponsors! Today let’s sort out some misconceptions and frequently asked questions about wedding planners and day of coordinators. Our goal is to get really clear on the difference between a wedding planner and a day-of coordinator, and to determine whether or not you really need to hire a professional to help you with your wedding plans. When I got married, I thought you had to have a wedding planner.  I laugh looking back, because in my mind it was wedding law that to plan anything, you HAD to have a wedding planner.  Like, I couldn’t even pick up the phone and call caterers for information and quotes, because you had to have your wedding planner do that.  So silly.  Things have come a long way, LOL!  And not only silly, but a professional planner was completely out of our budget, and, as it turns out, totally unnecessary.  I wasted a lot of time researching and interviewing planners before I realized that A.) I didn’t HAVE to hire anyone, and B.) John and I had all the tools we needed to plan OUR perfect wedding day. And side note, shocker - obviously, none of the wedding planners I interviewed ever mentioned to me, hey by the way, did you know that you could actually just do this on your own?  Thankfully I came around to that, but it took lots of wasted effort and stress to get there. So I will tell you - hey by the way, did you know that you could actually just do this on your own? Flash forward to today - I literally created the Wedding Planning Podcast so that any engaged couple could tune in and use the episodes and the tools we review in the weekly shows to plan their own wedding - no professional or pricey wedding planner required.  So spoiler alert before we even dive in - I definitely DO NOT think you have to spend thousands of dollars to hire a professional wedding planner!  I also know that there are countless wonderful wedding planning professionals out there, and for some couples it’s a really smart investment … we’ll get into that much more in today’s show. What’s cocktail hour without … cocktails?  Today we’re walking through an ultimate guide to everything you need to know about setting up a beer and wine bar for the wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, or any other event you host. The savings in supplying your own bar are really quite stunning.  If your venue will allow you to bring in your own beer, wine, and / or liquor, then I beg you to consider this a top priority.  And, as with all the things we’re going to cover - if the thought of you personally handling it is completely overwhelming and out of the question, then delegate it to someone else!  The bar is a perfect item to hand over to your fiance, a friend or a family member.   The first step is to decide what you’re going to serve.  You could choose to do beer & wine only, add in a signature cocktail or two, or go full-blown with beer, wine and liquor for mixed drinks.  And naturally, I know that there are couples who will opt for no alcohol to be served at all, and of course what we’re discussing today applies to non-alcoholic selections as well.  I like beer & wine only for a couple reasons - it’s simple.  Cutting out liquor, mixers, and the drink accessories like limes, cherries, umbrellas - not to mention the added work for your bartender - is the main benefit.  Listen in for so much more! Unlimited access to 12 bonus episodes of the Wedding Planning Podcast for just $19?  Yes, please!  www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/vault Easiest sangria recipe ever (serves 6): 1 bottle inexpensive sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, 1/4 C peach schnapps, any fruit you like!  Strawberries, apples & grapes work well. The cost of food & drinks can be a huge source of frustration when planning your wedding.  I can’t tell you how many messages I get from couples who are utterly horrified by the per person fee for dinner & drinks - and rightfully so!  Today we’re going to explore setting up your own appetizer spread, and I think you’ll be blown away by the savings.  Stay tuned for my detailed roadmap to menu planning, shopping, and setting it all up. We'll review how much to buy, where to shop, and what you can expect the total price tag to be for TWO different sample menu options. Even if you are using a more traditional caterer for the main meal, doing your own appetizer spread is a wonderful way to customize the offering, UP the quality, AND save a ton of money.  Not allowed to bring outside food into your venue?  This process for setting up a beautiful appetizer spread is also perfect for your bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, or any other party you host in the future.  Bookmark it, and share it with a friend who's helping you plan! I mentioned on Instagram last week that wedding troubleshooting is one of my super powers, and you really put me to the test with your questions on managing difficult family dynamics during your engagement.  Today we’re going to power through a candid conversation on dealing with your most challenging family issues surrounding the wedding. Managing your relationships with your family during your engagement can be incredibly challenging.  From misunderstandings & miscommunications with Mom, to dealing with estranged family members, choosing who to walk you down the aisle when you come from a complex blended family, who’s paying for what, who gets to invite who ... this list, as you can guess, goes on and on. Well guess what - I have good news & bad news. The good news is that when you get married, you assume an entire second family who will be there to love & support you in the years to come. The bad news?  That second family comes with a whole new set of challenges & dynamics to navigate.  Tune in to today's show for so much more! Are you drowning in wedding "etiquette" and "rules"?  Everyone has an opinion on invitation wording, cash bars, inviting kids, and what traditions absolutely SHOULD be included in the wedding day. Today, let’s take a step back, and reframe things. I appreciate that you’re listening from all different backgrounds, regions, & cultures.  What is the norm in NYC may be entirely opposite in Charleston, and unheard of in Los Angeles.  Part of the inspiration for today’s episode is my husband and I coming from two very different parts of the country, and our separate expectations of what should & shouldn’t happen at a wedding.  Where he’s from, it’s totally normal to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a huge wedding for 300 of your closest family & friends.  The brides family pays.  It’s unheard of to have a cash bar, to not ride in a limo, and to not invite kids. Where I’m from, pretty much everything opposite of that.  I have a really small family, and celebrating your reception in the basement of the church with no booze is pretty normal. Where things get tricky is when our expectations of what a wedding “should” look like conflict with our budget, our styles, and our personalities.  And of course, an added layer of difficulty arises when you and your partner come from different backgrounds, and one of you thinks paying $10,000 for a photographer is completely reasonable, and the other wants to spend $10,000 total on the entire wedding. But no matter where you’re from, I’m a firm believer in your wedding day being an expression and celebration of you & your partner.  At the end of the day, you’re making a really special commitment to one another, and looking to celebrate the occasion with your loved ones.  That’s it! With that said, let’s look at these “wedding etiquette rules” with a fresh set of eyes.  Forget what “everyone else is doing,” and open up the possibilities beyond that. Please know, believe, and trust that you truly have the support from me to ditch what everyone else is doing, and craft your day, your way.  No this doesn’t mean being blatantly rude or disagreeable to your family, or sneaking behind your partner to sabotage something that you know they really want.  You will need to continuously deploy common sense, compromise and understanding throughout your engagement.  But these commonly held beliefs can by all means be reinvented.  Today's show is brought to you by our friends at ... Congratulations on your engagement, and welcome to the Wedding Planning Podcast! Visit www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/learnmore to sign up for your FREE Engagement Starter Kit video series, courtesy of the Wedding Planning Podcast! Today's show is an episode all about the question I hear from so many newly engaged couples - what should we do first to start planning our wedding?  Where do we even begin? Right here. www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/learnmore I designed a totally FREE Engagement Starter Kit to guide you through the first five steps to creating the wedding of your dreams. In these quick & concise videos, we discuss the very most important things for you and your fiance to handle before moving on to cakes and flowers and dresses and bachelorette parties. There are FIVE critical steps for you to address to get started in the wedding planning process, and I'll give you a little hint - almost all of them are co-dependent on the others.  This means that it's extra important for you to take the time to have a thoughtful discussion about each topic with your fiance. The Wedding Planning Podcast is here to help you take the overwhelm and expense out of wedding planning.  I design each episode specifically to streamline and simplify the wedding planning process, because let’s face it - planning your wedding can be overwhelming, expensive, time consuming and stressful! There is way too much information out there that makes you doubt your common sense judgement and second guess your decisions, and I want to be your voice of reason & your cheerleader through the process. I know that not everyone has the budget to hire a dedicated wedding planner in the months leading up to the wedding, and I hope you will find our weekly meetings to be helpful and keep things in perspective as you plan away! When it comes to weddings, I'm an advocate for MINIMALISM.   Your bridal party is a shining example of how keeping things SMALL can make your wedding planning life a lot easier. Today we're going to review ways to keep your group of bridesmaids tight.  In our listener example, the bride is looking to include her two very best friends on earth vs. 12 women from high school, college and beyond. The tricky part?  How to share with those other friends that they will NOT be included in the wedding party. The good news is that there are lots of really simple and meaningful ways to include your friends, minus the matching dresses! Questions or stories to share about your own wedding?  Please be in touch! www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/contact To sign up for our totally free Engagement Starter Kit, visit: www.weddingplanningpodcast.co/learnmore You'll enjoy three bonus episodes of the podcast, designed to get your wedding plans off to a smooth start.
