Voting rights activist, author, lawyer, and politician Stacey Abrams joins Jonathan to discuss the history of voting rights in the United States, the current state of voter suppression, and how we can work towards fair voting and a robust civic engagement. Abrams served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017, and as minority leader from 2011 to 2017. In 2018, she became the first Black woman to run as a major-party gubernatorial nominee in the US. She is the founder of Fair Fight, an organization that works to ensure every American has a voice in our legal system, and Fair Count, which advocates for accuracy in the 2020 Census and greater participation in civic engagement. Dr. Mark served as the Senior Policy Advisor to the White House Office of Science and Technology during the Obama administration working on the Ebola outbreak in 2014. Comedian Mawaan Rizwan got his start creating YouTube sketches that turned his mother into a Bollywood Star. Now as an established writer and actor, he has written for Netflix’s “Sex Education” and can be seen in the upcoming “Two Weeks to Live” on Sky. In the fall of 2019, he joined Jonathan on his Road to Beijing tour opening in sold-out theaters across the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Deborah N. Archer received her JD from Yale Law School where she was also awarded the Charles G. Albom Prize. She’s held several esteemed titles throughout her career, and New York Law Journal has recently recognized her as one of New York's “Top Women in the Law.” She is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Law at NYU, Co-Faculty Director of the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law, and Director of the Civil Rights Clinic at NYU School of Law. Nicola Coughlan was born in Galway Ireland where she started acting at a young age. She made her screen debut in a 2004 Irish short film and went on to attend the Oxford School of Drama and Birmingham School of Acting. In 2018 she booked the Netflix Irish sitcom Derry Girls and made her West End debut in Donmar Warehouse’s production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She’s always been a fierce advocate for women’s rights, the homeless, and LGBTQ+ communities and continues to use her voice to speak up for those who aren’t heard. Tom Daley began diving at a very young age gaining notoriety at 9 years old. In 2008, at 14, he represented Great Britain as their youngest competitor in the Beijing Summer Olympics. He went on to compete in the 2012 London and 2016 Rio games picking up 2 bronze medals along the way. Dr. Alex Monro is a Botanist and research leader at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the Americas Team of the Identification and Naming Department.  After watching The Jungle Book at a young age he became fascinated with tropical forests and has spent the last 20 years working as a taxonomist, systematist and field botanist. Wendy Davis came into the spotlight in 2013 when she took to the Texas Senate floor to perform a 13 hour filibuster to block a bill that would severely impact abortion rights. She received her degree from Harvard and practiced law for several years before becoming Texas’s State Senator from 2009 to 2015. She is also the founder of Deeds Not Words, a non-profit organization that focuses on engaging young women in politics. Dr. M. Sanjayan was formerly the lead scientist at The Nature Conservancy before becoming the CEO of Conservation International. Together with CI they have created the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Project which aims to restore 73 million trees in Brazil by 2023. He’s a recipient of UCSC’s Global Oceans Hero Award,  a member of National Geographic Society’s Explorers Council and a Disneynature Ambassador. Dr. Celeste Watkins-Hayes received her M.A. and Ph.D in Sociology from Harvard and is a Professor of Sociology and African American Studies and Faculty Fellow at Northwestern University. Her first book titled “The New Welfare Bureaucrats: Entanglements of Race, Class, and Policy Reform” and most recent release “Remaking a Life: How Women Living with HIV/AIDS Confront Inequality” bring to light the uncomfortable fact that racism is still disproportionately affecting people of color in many ways. In the fall of 2019 Jonathan released his book “Over The Top” where he disclosed his HIV positive status which prompted Dr. Watkins-Hayes to write an op-ed on the subject in the NY Times.
