I’m so excited for this transition with the show, so I can not only bring you motherhood journeys, but also stories from all walks of life. I’m so excited to bring you Episode 1 of Everyday Extraordinary with my dear friend Lena McArthur. She is an amazing mom of two, a loving wife, and she has Cystic Fibrosis. She wasn’t diagnosed until she was 29 years old and has already outlived most others with this disease. She has spent 8 of the last 12 months in the hospital due to complications with this disease, and over the summer even faced death head on, but chose the hard route to continue living even with the pain and challenges that are ahead. Listen in today to hear from one of the most amazing people I know and feed off her light. Check out the update on the fundraiser we did for Lena to send her family on a Disney Cruise! You can still donate to help support her future transplant medical costs by sending donations to her husband’s Paypal: Mcarthursteveb@gmail.com. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ll keep you updated on our fundraising efforts!

If you’re like me… you’ve chased your child. If you’re like me, you’ve yelled, “Stop yelling!” If you’re like me, you don’t always act like an adult when trying to parent your toddlers! Ralphie Jacobs reminded me of how important it is to set expectations and teach kids proper behavior, and not just expect that they’ll know how to behave. This example of chasing my 3 year old is perfect example of how setting expectations, teaching appropriate behavior, and following through in an adult-way is the secret to parenting. haha. Let’s all agree to stop chasing our children in libraries, grocery stores… really anywhere with aisles! I’m right here with you!

Today my guest is the extraordinary Kathleen Whiting. Kathleen first came onto my radar when I began following her daughter Terah and her daughter Indy’s battle with cancer. You can listen to Terah on the show here. As I followed along with their hospital stay, a vibrant woman kept appearing, and that incredible, glowing woman was Kathleen. Come to find out, Kathleen had a very challenging journey with motherhood, involving being a single mom, working many jobs, and struggling to believe in her worth. Today we are chatting about that journey and learning from her experiences. We also hear from Terah at the end as she offers a tribute to her mom. I think we can all identify with being too hard on ourselves, and I hope this interview will serve you well in helping you to believe in your value and your effort.

It’s our first Extraordinary Kid Episode! Today my guest is the incredible Abby Ward. Abby’s mom Janie was on the show last year, speaking about her daughters 70 foot fall off a cliff while hiking, and her recovery from extreme injuries. Now, Abby is here speaking for herself about the various challenges she faced growing up, what she remembers about the fall, how her recovery has been, and how she views the future. It is incredibly inspiring that a young person can have so much wisdom and perspective. Enjoy! Today my guest is the amazing Nina Brostrom. Nina is a mom of four boys, some of whom have ADHD. In this conversation, we talk about the struggles of some of her kids, her own battle with control, and in the second half we talk about how her brother coming out as gay completely changed the way she viewed those who were different than her. Not only that, but after opening her eyes to the LGBTQ community around her, she saw a need for additional resources and support and she did something about it. This is not an episode about taking sides on what can be a sensitive topic. It’s really about loving others as they are and removing the shame that many feel because they are different. No parent wants their child to feel they are loved and accepted conditionally. And just like she loved her brother for who he truly was, she began to see her boys and their challenges/differences in a new light and with a renewed love. Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible dads out there. Today, we are hearing from an Extraordinary Dad, Daniel Brooker. You might remember his now wife, Brittany Price, from episode 138, where she shared about becoming a widow, enduring that difficult time, and then finding love again. Well, Daniel was her love at the end of that difficult road, and ironically enough, he had travelled a similar path. Today we are talking about adoption, losing his wife, grief, and also finding great love again in Brittany. Blending families is not easy, but I admire how he shares candidly about the way he views step-parenting and the importance of dating. It’s a must listen, as it will offer a different perspective into loss. He’s really extraordinary! Today my guest is the incredible Lori Schlegel. We cover a lot of ground in this episode as she very bravely shares about going through a difficult divorce, finding her inner strength, starting her own organization business, and her recent remarriage, which made her an instant step-mom to three additional sons. There’s something for everyone in this episode, but mostly it’s about hope and believing that God wants the best for us. Even when our vision looks differently than we might have thought, we can become stronger and be blessed even more richly than we thought possible when we trust in His plan.  Isn’t Lori a babe?!?! Today, my conversation is with the incredible woman behind Austin Angels, Susan Ramirez. I can’t believe she’s on the show! Susan saw a need in the foster care community for additional support for the families who take in foster children. So, she took her drive and experience from her corporate job and put all her energy into founding this incredible nonprofit. Now she helps hundreds of kids to feel love and build their skills and confidence, so that they can lessen the stats of kids exiting the program at 18. We also talk about her own motherhood journey and it’s just incredible. You may not feel called to foster a child, but there is so much we can do to support families that do! I know, not the most fun topic to cover. But since our kids are getting older and my husband is an attorney assigned to the victims of sexual assault/abuse, we have really gotten more serious about how to protect our kids against this very common occurrence. So I’m sharing specifics about sexual abuse, common signs of offenders, kids who are at risk, and the boundaries we have in place to help protect our kids. Just because you don’t talk about this issue doesn’t mean your family is not at risk. In fact, it probably means you are more at risk if you are not considering the possibilities and creating plans to help mitigate risky situations. Let me know what you think and what your rules are. Today my guest is the truly extraordinary, Michelle Kaley. Her friend reached out to me to tell me some of her story and I knew she would be a guest like no other. Michelle is a mom of four, a dance teacher and studio owner, a light in her community, and two years ago she began her fight with cancer. A few weeks ago, she received some devastating news that her time left here on earth is short, and she was kind enough to spend an hour with me to share about her motherhood journey, what her cancer journey has looked like, what her life’s purpose has been, and what she wants to tell her kids and husband. Sorry for all the sobbing by me at the end! Also, I didn’t do a closing to the show because it felt weird. Instead, I included a recording of a song I did for Michelle. Since we spoke, I couldn’t get the song, “It is Well with My Soul” out of my head. The lyrics of this song have never felt more true, and so I recorded it (in my garage) with a prayer in my heart for Michelle and her incredible family. I pray we can all have the peace of. knowing that the Lord is on our side, and every day is a gift. So much love to you, Michelle. Jessica Lamb is back to answer some specific questions related to behavior for both children with special needs and typical children. Here’s what we are covering today: * We’ve all had that situation when we are out in public with our kids and they notice someone with a visible difference, or maybe they notice that another child is acting differently than they would expect. That may result in staring or they may ask a question that we don’t know how to respond to, or that is uncomfortable or insensitive. Help the mom listening who wants to learn how to handle that type of situation. And for the mom listening who has a child with a disability, what their role is. * My child hits. How do I address this behavioral issue at different ages? * Timeouts… do they work? Can you use them effectively? What can you do instead?
