Denny Was In Hawaii - So we're replaying one of our favorite episodes! All new content next week! To start the show, we hit the feedback slush pile, including a voicemail feedback about the Walmart lawsuit. In this episode, Drew sits done with the wild and wacky crew at Transplants Brewing Company to discuss making a Pumpkin Beer that's not a Pumpkin Beer in more than just one way. Denny and Drew are recovering from their road trip! So here's a revisit of our very first Q&A show It's Episode 10 and it's finally time to see if we're as smart as we say we are. We discuss the listener response to our Session Beer efforts and promise to post a kickass list of session beer recipes. (Link below) We run off to the pub and discuss the recently concluded Pacific Northwest Homebrewers Conference and the lameness of "pink washing" and silly sexism. And then to the lecture hall where "Professors" Denny and Drew sit down and try and see how long they can fake actually knowing anything. For listener ease we've broken the questions up into categories so you can find things more easily. OVer the course of twenty some odd questions we tackle questions about ingredients, process, styles, yeast and everything else. Before we leave, Drew gives a brief shout out to two very impactful passings that recently occurred. One to the man whose decision in the 70's still impacts us to this day. The other, well, that one's more important to Chihuahua owners. Over the last decade, Asheville has become a mecca of breweries, but perhaps none of them have the dedication to history and brewing as a passion as the improbably tiny Zebulon Artisan Ales helmed by long time brewer, former homebrew shop owner and man of odd business hours, Mike Karnowski. The Brew is Out There! In the world of beer, we hold this truth to be self-evident - Non-Alcoholic beer sucks. Does it have to, though? With growing interest in healthier options, there's a movement afoot to make craft inspired non-alcoholic beer. But on this episode, we wanted to step back and take a look at where we started on our journey of New England "Hazy" IPA (Episode 15), revisit one of the strange beer ideas Drew still gets questions about with Russell Everett's Cool Ranch Beer from Bainbridge Brewing(Episode 23) and the infamous Gin discussion that some of you probably didn't get to because it was in our April Fools episode (Episode 63). Happy New Beer! We kick off the new year with a look at how the folks at We Love LB and the Long Beach Homebrewers are using homebrew to build a better neighborhood. First we'll talk to Scott Jones, the executive director of We Love LB about his mission to strengthen his community and how beer helps and then we talk to Neil Ian Horowitz of the Long Beach Homebrewers about how the club got involved and what beer he provided to the festivities. It's an interesting model that we think can be duplicated around the world! But first we've got to take your feedback, cover the beer news including what the shutdown means for beer and Teri Farendorf's take on the "Inebriation" Industry, some foundational numbers and calculations and our favorite brewing experiences of the past year. Last call in Australia! On our final night in Sydney, we did a presentation at Batch Brewing Company. After 1100 kilometers of driving and not killing each other - Denny and Drew enjoyed meeting a healthy gathering of local homebrewers. After the talk, Drew sat down with Chris Sidwa of Batch Brewing Company. Together they talk how a Jersey kid ended up surviving a company crash overseas and turned it into his dream of owning a brewery and the steps he takes to ensure he's doing good for the beer and his people. That's what happened with Dan Regan who left touring with Reel Big Fish to open a brewery with brewing partners, Eric McLaughlin and Michael Clements. Drew sits down with Dan and Eric and to talk their newly opened Liberation Brewing Company in Long Beach. Before that we dig into the news, competition tips and changes Denny's going to have to make because his hip is going cyborg. The Brew is Out There! We like to Brew. We like to Party. We like to Parti... . This week we're going to dive into an old fashioned technique that allows you to brew beautifully strong beers without wasting any left over malty goodness! Two Beers for the Price of One Mash Parti-Gyle Equations: Gravity Points batch 1 = Gravity PointsTotal × Volume Total x SugarPercentage1 / (Volume Batch 1) Gravity Points batch 2 = Gravity PointsTotal × Volume Total x SugarPercentage2 / (Volume Batch 2) Sugar Percentages for 1/3-2/3rd Splits (e.g. 5gallons/10gallons) SugarPercentage1 = 0.67 SugarPercentage2 = 0.33 Sugar Percentages for 1/2-1/2 Splits (e.g. 5gallons/5gallons) SugarPercentage1 = 0.58 SugarPercentage2 = 0.42 To figure out what the "Total Batch" gravity needs to be from a desired Batch 1 gravity Gravity PointsTotal = (Gravity Points Batch 1 x Volume Batch 1)/(TotalVolume x SugarPercentage1) Links Randy Mosher's Brewers Companion: https://amzn.to/2uMHHo5 Brewing Techniques Article: http://www.morebeer.com/brewingtechniques/library/backissues/issue2.2/mo... Two big things on today's show as we get ready for HomeBrewCon! The first, we asked you for your Brewday disasters and boy did you deliver. So we're going to run through some of our favorite stories of things gone horribly wrong. And in more positive and hopful news, Drew talks with Richard Smith of Florida Hops, LLC about the challenges of pulling off the improbable - growing hops in the humid heat of Florida. We'll find out new techniques he's establishing and the impact of Florida terroir on our favorite hops! When things don't go right, well, our beer pays the price. In this episode, we'll look at the most common off-flavors we've encountered, what causes them and how to prevent/fix them. What happens when your pub chain wants a brewery but has no room? You make room! When Brian Herbertson joined the Simmzy's group, that was his challenge. The answer - stick it on the second floor! Together we sit down and discuss just how you put a brewery on the second story, tackling supplying a whole chain with beer from one location and his spin on the summer's new hit style - Brut IPA. We also get some great feedback on Speed Brewing and Drew butchers the Polish language, again. We cover punks in the news, alcohol in the industry, the British Museum, homebrew charity and answer your questions! Are you experienced, IPA drinker? Prepare to have your IPA world made more Eclectic as Drew sits talks with the legendary Dick Cantwell about his new book, Eclectic IPA. Together we take a look at where IPA came from, where it is and where Dick thinks it's going. Yes, we even talk about the haze and somehow, improbably, smoked peaches. Who knew? SCIENCE TIME! Sit back and relax, it's getting frosty in here! On this episode of the podcast, we breakdown the results of our Cryo/T-90 experiment. And since the results were so "weird" - we brought in some extra help in the form of some of the IGORs who helped with the podcast including Brad Macleod, Eric Pierce and Miguel Loza Brown. Together we talk what went right (and sometimes what went wrong with the brew days) and what we all thought of the Cryo beers (including some numbers courtesy of White Labs). And then in the lounge, Drew sits down with Joshua M. Bernstein, author of the newly released Homebrew World about the stories you find when you talk to homebrewers around the world. And of course we also cover the whole wide world of beer news, talk about some brewing adventures, answer some questions, drop a little British Museum on you before we get you back to the world.
