Do you ever feel like an outsider no matter where you are? Do you need motivation to be courageous and talk to the people that could be "your people”? Rachel lives and writes in Djibouti, a small country in the Horn of Africa. Her family has learned (is still learning) how to struggle well while living as cultural and spiritual outsiders in this Muslim country. She has published a book about raising kids abroad: Finding Home: Third Culture Kids in the World and has a book coming out in October. It’s a biography of "Somalia's Mother Teresa", a woman who also struggled well in Djibouti, fighting against terrorism, disease, and fundamentalism. Rachel writes about life at the crossroads of faith and culture (for places from the New York Times to Christianity Today) and loves encouraging others to live with love and courage. She is also the runner that I want to become! I know you're going to love hearing from this inspiring lady! “Would you just help me trust you, Lord? I want to want to give it all up to you.” If you’ve prayed these prayers, you’re not alone. We know that the center of God's will is the best place to be, but surrender is easier said than done. A host of hurdles, from busyness and bitterness to complacency and control, can prevent us from moving where He directs. In her latest book, Vivian Mabuni provides an authentic look at what it means to willingly risk saying yes to whatever God asks--and highlights a practical path to the deeper joy of a yielded life. Vivian Mabuni is a national speaker and author with a passion to share the hope and life found through intimacy with God. With 30 years of ministry experience on staff w/ Cru, she loves teaching about the Bible and providing practical applications. Do you frequent the parenting shame cycle? Could you use tips on how to genuinely engage with teenagers? How can you help your children choose quality friendships? Kimberly Stuart grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, where she learned to be snobbish about corn on the cob and good storytelling. She earned degrees at St. Olaf College and the University of Iowa, both fine institutions that did very little to prepare her for the lethal cocktail of parenting and writing. Kim is the author of eight novels, including the Heidi Elliott series and her most recent book, Heart Land. She has a passion to write chemistry-driven, smart, romance that requires a reader neither to leave her brain at the door nor to visit a confessional after turning the last page. Ellie Holcomb has created a beautiful, scripture rooted, children’s musical project Sing: Creation Songs. She wanted to write songs that were directly inspired by both God’s word and His beautiful creation that is a perfect companion piece to her upcoming children’s book Who Sang The First Song?. Each song is tied to specific Scripture but is also full of rich imagery from the world around us. She wanted kids to be able to sing these songs and see evidence of what they were singing all around them.  “Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE to sing, so I got curious about who sang the first song. What did the world sound like as God created it? I loved these questions, so I set out to write a book so that we could explore not so much how God made the world, but why He created the world and each one of us. My sincere hope is that children (and the adults reading to them) would be reminded of who and whose we are, and that as we remember how God created us and loves us, our hearts and lives would sing for the joy of being loved!” What we chat about: Ellie’s humble beginnings in music how letting go and being grateful changed the trajectory of Ellie’s life avoiding comparisons tending the land that God has given you setting boundaries to prevent over-extending yourself the freedom that can only be found in truth the inspiration behind Ellie’s new music and children’s book Links mentioned: The Best Yes Sleeping at Last “One” Sleeping at Last Podcast Sing: Creation SongsWho Sang The First Song?UnkersEvery Moment Holy Connect with ELLIE: website | instagram | facebook | twitter | youtube Connect with Emily: website I instagram I facebook I patreon Episode Sponsors: BioClarity: 15% off your first purchase + free shipping on any routine with code SWP Prep Dish: get a free 2 week trial at prepdish.com/swp Care Of: 25% off your first month with code SWP Just Fab: sign up to be a VIP and get your first style for as low as $10 using the link support the show: Patreon | Amazon Share the Struggle! Jesus gives you permission - He did it Himself.  And lastly, if you're feeling lonely, rejected or left out, know that you're in good company. Jesus often felt the same way and He is near. Jinger and Jessica Lord are a mother and daughter pair whom I have watched and admired first hand. They share a closeness that is often not present between a mom and her 19-year-old daughter.  Jinger is on staff at my church in charge of our children’s and family ministries.  She is highly organized and administrative with a passion for excellence and the discipleship of children and parents. Jessica is her second-born (in between two boys) and, in contrast to her mother, is a creative, random-thinker who is more passionate about relationships than tasks. We chat about the ups and downs of their relationship and the fruit of intentional discipleship in their home. Rebecca wants to ruin the show's theme song by changing her name to Becky.  Please send her messages on Instagram letting her know this is the wrong choice. Rebecca went on vacation (again) to visit her parents who are not (but actually are) Snowbirds. I stopped homeschooling this week and made some people mad.  We also solved multiple listener problems. Listen and be changed forever.
