You know, I don’t feel like I’m cut out for this Mom thing. I am angry ALL the time and it can feel completely overwhelming to be in charge sometimes. But the truth is, we have been chosen to be the mothers of our children. The perspective shift for today is to stop thinking about all of the ways you are falling short and to start focusing on how you have already been equipped for this job. Becky Keife is the Community Manager for DaySpring’s (in)courage, a widely followed online community where authentic women connect deeply with God and others. She is also a popular speaker for MOPS groups and other women’s events, and is the author of the new book, No Better Mom for the Job: Parenting with Confidence (Even When You Don't Feel Cut Out for It.) Becky is a huge fan of Voxer, Sunday naps, and moms in the thick of it. She and her husband live near Los Angeles where they enjoy hiking sunny trails with their three spirited sons. WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT: enjoying different seasons of motherhood when the people you love the most bring out the worst in you how vulnerability has helped Becky overcome the shame of being an angry mom feeling completely inadequate as a mom shifting our perspective from our inadequacies to how God has uniquely equipped us for motherhood standing on the promise of James 1:5 - “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” what God is teaching Becky about being present in the moment with her kids resisting the temptation to put productivity on a pedestal making a list of the mundane things you’re good at - those are strengths calling out the strengths in the moms around you LINKS MENTIONED: #45: The One Where We Model the Awkward Race Conversation in Hopes that You Will Have One Too #144: White Girls and Diversity with Nika SpauldingNo Better Mom for the JobNo Better Mom for the Job 5-Day YouVersion devotional CONNECT WITH BECKY: website | instagram | facebook CONNECT WITH EMILY: website | instagram | facebook | patreon EPISODE SPONSORS: Prep Dish: try it free for 2 weeks when you visit prepdish.com/msw Little Passports: get 15% off any subscription when you visit littlepassports.com and use promo code MSW Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: a fairytale podcast for kids about extraordinary women from all over the world SUPPORT THE SHOW: Patreon  SHARE THE STRUGGLE! Are you racing towards your goals? Running away every chance you can? I sure do. We could all use a gentle reminder to slow down and listen to what God may be telling us. This week we are bringing you an exclusive interview with our very own Rebecky! There are no problems this month as we celebrate Rebecca Smith’s vulnerable and sweet page-turner that launched this week. In A Better Life: Slowing Down to Get Ahead, Rebecca tells us many personal stories of how she took baby steps and followed God’s lead to find her purpose. Even though she is one of my dearest friends, I didn’t know the sweet story behind Better Life Bags before reading. I loved each chapter more than the last and I’m so happy she shared her heart with all of us. Rebecca Smith lives in a low-income area of Detroit, Michigan with her husband, four children, and many miscellaneous pets. She started a custom handbag company in her basement with a mission to hire women who have various barriers to employment. These women are adopted into the Better Life family and given a chance to succeed in life, family, and friendship.  WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT: an update on Better Life Bags Rebecca and Katie - who’s Emily’s sister? Raising daughters is amazing/overwhelming. Today we are focusing on pre-teen girls but we also touch on the general wellness that all of us mothers are trying to maintain over here. In Courtney’s experience, our girls turn a corner around first and second grade - when things aren’t just about cool tutus and everyone being friends. Courtney is really passionate about this time in life, so with her girls, she tackles 6 subjects: identity, friendship, body, emotions, and technology in a fun and interactive way. Courtney DeFeo is most known for being a factory of ideas for families. It’s her desire to lead a life that radiates God’s love in action and His grace along the way. As a former marketing professional for Chick-fil-A, Courtney has a history of creating memorable programs and ideas that motivate others to action. She is the author of In This House, We Will Giggle, creator of ABC Scripture Cards and the kindness movement Light ‘Em Up Acts. Recently, Courtney launched a new study in collaboration with Parent Cue entitled Treasured designed for tween girls and their moms. Courtney’s most honorable mention is her husband Ron and their two wildly creative girls (Ella, 13 and Larson, 10). How many of you can not DEAL with another change in plans? I feel like I can’t possibly make one more decision right now. I don’t have enough information and I’m probably doing all of this wrong. I know for me, I overthink like it’s my job. Today we’re talking to Anne Bogel who a lot of you know as Modern Mrs Darcy. Through her blog and podcasts, Anne helps us get more out of our reading life (which means we’ll get more out of our actual life) and now she has a new book that is EXCELLENT and timely. One of my favorite quotes from Don't Overthink It is "the best memories start with things going wrong". Well, I hope you’ve been buckled up because we have been “making memories” left and right! This week Anne gives actionable steps and strategies to make easier, more confident decisions so that we can spend more time focusing on the things that really matter in life. Waiting well through the adoption process, working towards financial freedom for your family and battling comparison as a parent of a child with delays are just a few of the topics we hit on today with my guest Alison Storm. She talks to us about her season of waiting and her distaste for the phrase “it happens in God’s time”. Alison saw child slavery first hand on a trip and it started a fire in her to change her parenting to battle entitlement. Alison Storm calls the south home and began her career as a television reporter working in newsrooms around the country. Alison was a part of HIS Morning Crew which airs on HIS Radio across the Carolinas and coastal Georgia, serves as the features editor of Belle magazine and facilitates Financial Peace University at her church. Do you love to storm out when you’re fighting with your spouse? Maybe get a good door slam in and draw things out a bit? Conflict happens. Especially with those partners we love so much and that’s exactly what we’re talking about today with The Peppers. Gerard Brown and Jessie Artigue launched the now popular ‘Marriage is Funny’ podcast just two days after a serious discussion about divorce. Four years later, they credit the health of their connection to a podcast community that developed in response to the radical vulnerability they bring to their listeners each week. They refuse to claim the title of “RELATIONSHIP EXPERTS” because they continue to figure things out just like everybody else. Residing in sunny Long Beach, CA, Gerard and Jessie believe that talking things out and tight bear hugs fix (almost) anything, have committed to what they call ‘Great Love,’ and strive to find the humor in every mess.  As a special gift, Jessie and Gerard are sharing their free video series about the three “marriage myths” that nearly ruined their relationship with MSW listeners at meetthepeppers.com/strugglingwell! How can I talk to my kids about sexual abuse? How do I know if what I encountered is abuse? Is my church a safe place for my kids? All of these are important questions and we talk about the hard stuff today with my guest Mary DeMuth. Her best advice for us? Speak up, and persevere anyway. If you met Mary DeMuth today, her joy might confuse you. Who she has become in light of tragedy is a testimony of Jesus’s ability to transform a broken life. A child of three divorces, a victim of repeated sexual assault at five-years-old, with a father who died when she was ten, Mary wanted to end her life in her teens. In the tenth grade, she heard about Jesus, and she knew she wanted to chase after Him for the rest of her life. Thankfully, He chased her. Mary is the author of forty books, including her latest: We Too: How the Church Can Respond Redemptively to the Sexual Abuse Crisis. She has spoken around the world about God’s ability to transform a life and planted a church with her family in southern France. Her best work? Being a mom to three amazing young adults and the wife of 28 years to Patrick. She makes her home in Dallas alongside her husband, an energetic chocolate lab, and a fuzzy black cat. WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT: Mary’s history of sexual abuse and finding Christ how Mary reconciles her faith in a good God who allowed her to be abused how Mary’s experiences have affected her parenting what lead Mary to focus on the abuse happening in the church how Mary is using the stories of other survivors to help fuel her advocacy the power of sharing your story key factors of a safe church how to recognize when you’ve been abused and how to begin to heal Mary’s encouragement for survivors about the process of healing confronting your abuser educating your kids about sex and abuse what Christians can do to help bring justice for victims LINKS MENTIONED: 21 Days of Healing The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and MinistriesGod Made All of Me: A Book to Help Children Protect Their BodiesLifeIsBroken.com CONNECT WITH MARY: website | instagram | facebook CONNECT WITH EMILY: website | instagram | facebook | patreon EPISODE SPONSORS: Blume: get 25% off your first stick + free shipping when you visit blume.com/swp Prep Dish: get 2 weeks free when you visit prepdish.com/msw Embr Wave: get $60 off your Embr Wave bracelet when you visit embrwave.com/msw SUPPORT THE SHOW: Patreon  SHARE THE STRUGGLE! Do you frequent the parenting shame cycle? Could you use tips on how to genuinely engage with teenagers? How can you help your children choose quality friendships? Kimberly Stuart grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, where she learned to be snobbish about corn on the cob and good storytelling. She earned degrees at St. Olaf College and the University of Iowa, both fine institutions that did very little to prepare her for the lethal cocktail of parenting and writing. Kim is the author of eight novels, including the Heidi Elliott series and her most recent book, Heart Land. She has a passion to write chemistry-driven, smart, romance that requires a reader neither to leave her brain at the door nor to visit a confessional after turning the last page. Kim has made her home in Minneapolis, Houston, Chicago, Costa Rica, Nebraska, and Iowa, where she now lives with her brave husband and three wily children. Ellie Holcomb has created a beautiful, scripture rooted, children’s musical project Sing: Creation Songs. She wanted to write songs that were directly inspired by both God’s word and His beautiful creation that is a perfect companion piece to her upcoming children’s book Who Sang The First Song?. Each song is tied to specific Scripture but is also full of rich imagery from the world around us. She wanted kids to be able to sing these songs and see evidence of what they were singing all around them.  “Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE to sing, so I got curious about who sang the first song. What did the world sound like as God created it? I loved these questions, so I set out to write a book so that we could explore not so much how God made the world, but why He created the world and each one of us. My sincere hope is that children (and the adults reading to them) would be reminded of who and whose we are, and that as we remember how God created us and loves us, our hearts and lives would sing for the joy of being loved!” What we chat about: Ellie’s humble beginnings in music how letting go and being grateful changed the trajectory of Ellie’s life avoiding comparisons tending the land that God has given you setting boundaries to prevent over-extending yourself the freedom that can only be found in truth the inspiration behind Ellie’s new music and children’s book Links mentioned: The Best Yes Sleeping at Last “One” Sleeping at Last Podcast Sing: Creation SongsWho Sang The First Song?UnkersEvery Moment Holy Connect with ELLIE: website | instagram | facebook | twitter | youtube Connect with Emily: website I instagram I facebook I patreon Episode Sponsors: BioClarity: 15% off your first purchase + free shipping on any routine with code SWP Prep Dish: get a free 2 week trial at prepdish.com/swp Care Of: 25% off your first month with code SWP Just Fab: sign up to be a VIP and get your first style for as low as $10 using the link support the show: Patreon | Amazon Share the Struggle!
